Memorial of Saint Catherine of Siena. Father Dave reflects on St. Catherine of Siena's focus on love of God and love of neighbor, which Jesus details in today's readings. If we begin with love, we will spread the Gospel in our communities and in the world. Preached at St. Paul the Apostle Church, New York City, NY on 04-29-24
QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“The triunity of God is the secret of His beauty. If we deny this, we at once have a God without radiance and without joy (and without humor!)….”~Karl Barth (1886-1968) in Church Dogmatics “Creation's being is God's pleasure, creation's beauty God's glory; beauty reveals the shining of an uncreated light. … Creation is only a splendor that hangs upon that life of love and knowledge, and only by grace; it is first and foremost a surface, a shining fabric of glory, whose inmost truth is its aesthetic correspondence to the beauty of divine love. … It is delight that constitutes creation, and so only delight can comprehend it, see it aright, understand its grammar. Only in loving creation's beauty—only in seeing that creation truly is beauty—does one apprehend what creation is.”~David Bentley Hart in The Beauty of the Infinite (2003) “…all the beauty to be found throughout the whole creation is but the reflection of the diffused beams of that Being who hath an infinite fullness of brightness and glory; God . . . is the foundation and fountain of all being and all beauty.”~Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) in The Nature of True Virtue “A sin…consists in doing, saying, thinking, or imagining anything that is not in perfect conformity with the mind and law of God.”~J.C. Ryle (1816-1900), Anglican bishop, in Holiness “Sin is the dare of God's justice, the rape of His mercy, the jeer of His patience, the slight of His power, and the contempt of His love.”~John Bunyan (1628-1688), writer of The Pilgrim's Progress “If God is holy, then he can't sin. If God can't sin, then he can't sin against me. If he can't sin against me, shouldn't that make him the most trustworthy being there is?” “We will want and choose to put to death what is earthly in us when we believe God is infinitely better than everything we are tempted to leave him for.”~Jackie Hill Perry in Holier Than Thou: How God's Holiness Helps Us Trust HimSERMON PASSAGEGalatians 5:22-23, Psalm 118:1, Psalm 34:8-10 (ESV)Galatians 5 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Psalm 1181 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!Psalm 348 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!9 Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack!10 The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
In Matthew 6:1-13 we see that the journey from hypocrisy to true Godly virtue starts with understanding our motives, and bringing them under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/whitefieldschurch/support
Righteousness is not in turning your faces towards the east or the west. Rather, the righteous are those who believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Books, and the prophets; who give charity out of their cherished wealth to relatives, orphans, the poor, ˹needy˺ travellers, beggars, and for freeing captives; who establish prayer, pay alms-tax, and keep the pledges they make; and who are patient in times of suffering, adversity, and in ˹the heat of˺ battle. It is they who are true ˹in faith˺, and it is they who are mindful ˹of Allah˺.

One of the ways we experience God is through the beauty of his creation. Beauty heals. Beauty refreshes. Beauty puts our souls at rest. Beauty speaks hope. In today's podcast, Stasi, along with Polly Dodge and Jamie Goudie of the Wild at Heart team, share the ways they cultivate beauty, and why choosing to look for beauty is so important. Jesus is Divine Beauty, perfect, alluring, and glorious. When we ask him, he will help us find beauty even in desolate places, surprising us with it in abundance, healing our hearts and opening us to receive even more of him.…..SHOW NOTES:…..VERSES: Matthew 5:48 (NIV) — Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.Song of Solomon 5:16 (NIV) — His mouth is sweetness itself; he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, this is my friend, daughters of Jerusalem.Psalm 27:4 (NIV) — One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.Isaiah 33:17(NIV) — Your eyes will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar.Psalm 45 (in its entirety, but here 45:1 [NIV]) — My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.Isaiah 43:19(NIV) — See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.…..OTHER RESOURCES:The Journey of Desire by John Eldredge – https://wahe.art/46qgloeBeginning quote by Jonathan Edwards from The Nature of True Virtue – https://wahe.art/3qY6HJe…..Don't Miss Out on the Next Episode – Subscribe for FreeSubscribe using your favorite podcast app:Spotify Podcasts – https://spoti.fi/42SsOipApple Podcasts – https://apple.co/42E0oZ1 Google Podcasts – http://wahe.art/3M81kxLAmazon Music & Audible – https://amzn.to/3M9u6hJ

This month our teaching series is True Virtue as we are examining four virtues that seem to be on the decline not only in our world but also within the church. Today we are going to be addressing two of those virtues – honor and integrity. If you haven't watched/listened to those messages yet either here on the podcast or on our YouTube Channel, you might want to wait on this until you do to have a bit better context of our conversation today. Should we honor others who have different values than us? Should we honor others who don't honor God in their lives? What does it even mean to honor others above yourself? As we begin our series called "True Virtue", let's begin by talking about what it really means to honor others. The Bible talks a lot about honoring God, those in authority, those around us so it's worth a healthy discussion. Like what you're seeing online? What is true virtue? If we do not regard God as central to virtue, we have missed the point of what virtue is. If one does not have the glory of God as his chief end, what he does is not truly virtuous. Jonathan Edwards published his Nature of True Virtue in 1765. Edwards desired to defend the Christian understanding of what virtue is, opposing the rationalist understanding which diminished divine revelation. The next series of lectures come from Dr. Tom Nettles' course on Jonathan Edwards and Andrew Fuller, taught in January of 2020 at Covenant Baptist Theological Seminary. The Weekly Discourse usually features a lecture which has been taken from a course at Covenant Baptist Theological Seminary. The first Westerner to be ordained as a monastic disciple in Thich Nhat Hanh's Vietnamese Zen lineage Sister Annabel Laity was given the Dharma name Chan Duc, which means True Virtue. Now a much-loved senior Dharma teacher in the Plum Village community, Sister Annabel teaches and leads retreats worldwide. She is the author of True Virtue: The Journey of an English Buddhist Nun (Parallax Press).
Psalm 122:1-9 1 I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” 2 Our feet are standing in your gates, Jerusalem. 3 Jerusalem is built like a city that is closely compacted together. 4 That is where the tribes go up— the tribes of the Lord— to praise the name of the Lord according to the statute given to Israel. 5 There stand the thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David. 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you be secure. 7 may there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels." 8 For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, “Peace be within you.” 9 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your prosperity.
Covenant Baptist Theological Seminary is a Confessional Reformed Baptist Seminary Providing affordable online theological education to help the Church in its calling to train faithful men.
