Police followed every possible lead, but 65 years later, they are no closer to finding John Doe's identity. Recorded on location at the 2022 Conference on Crimes Against Women, each episode in this bonus series will deepen our understanding of DNA testing, how it supports cold case investigations and prosecutions, and what's ahead for crime solvers around the globe. Can someone get away with murder in the 21st century? Advances in DNA testing, forensic genetic genealogy and forensic investigation are making it more difficult to do so, and applying these advances to homicide investigations is significantly reducing the time it takes to catch a killer. Forensic psychologist, Dr. Lawrence Simon, explains the critical work of investigators who pursue cold cases, serial killings and other crimes committed by deviant offenders, and how they benefit from collaboration with experts from around the world via The Vidocq Society and the Cold Case Foundation, where he is a collaborator. Dr. Simon walks us through the importance of old-fashioned detective work combined with cutting-edge technology, DNA evidence and luck - all of these playing vital roles in making it less likely for someone to get away with murder. Dr. Simon has spent over a decade working on complex crimes against persons cases and is a vital member of major cold case task forces, assisting investigators on high profile serial homicides. At the 2022 Conference on Crimes Against Women, Dr. Simon presented 3 sessions of his highly popular topic, "Sexual Deviant Killers." This is his second appearance on the Podcast on Crimes Against Women.

The walls were filled with rows and rows of decapitated heads, skulls, and bones. Some still had rotting flesh on them - others were completely skeletonized. When the FBI agent made it to the back he came face to face with the man. He was shirtless, barefoot, and stirring a giant pot with a head inside. “I wasn't expecting you today” - the man said... In 1990, three friends worked together to create a crack crime fighting team – a group of professionals who brought expertise from all facets of crime fighting. There were detectives, scientists, psychologists, and even a forensic artist. They named their group after Eugene Francois Vidocq, a French criminal turned crimefighter from the 18th century. The Vidocq Society meets once a month for lunch and cold case discussions. Members come from over a dozen states and multiple foreign countries. The founders were inspired to act on this simple premise: someone had to do something to alleviate the suffering that the bad guys (and girls) were causing. Gone Cold: Philadelphia Unsolved Murders | A KYW Newsradio Podcast

In February of 1957 the body of a young boy was found in a box in the woods near Susquehanna Road in Philadelphia. More than 60 years later, the identity of The Boy in the Box and the identity of his killer remain unknown.  When the Boy was found, his body was photographed and flyers seeking information were distributed all over Philadelphia. Bill Fleisher and Barb Cohan were kids at the time. They saw the flyers, and the image of the boy's body was permanently etched in their minds. Fleisher became one of the founders of the Vidocq Society, a group of investigators, forensic scientists, and experts who help law enforcement solve crimes. Cohan, a former federal prosecutor, has been a member of the Vidocq Society for more than two decades. Walt Hunter covered the investigation into the Boy in the Box for all of his 30-plus year career as a Philadelphia investigative reporter. Now, he's the public voice and face of the Vidocq Society. Cohan, Fleisher, Hunter, and the rest of the Vidocq Society have remained dedicated to solving the mystery of the Boy in the Box and putting a name on his gravestone.  You can find the Philadelphia Police Department online at https://www.phillypolice.com/ Read more about the Vidocq Society: https://www.vidocq.org/ Stay in touch with Gone Cold by following us online: Twitter: @gonecoldphilly  ( https://twitter.com/gonecoldphilly ) Instagram: @gonecoldphilly ( https://www.instagram.com/gonecoldphilly/ )   Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/GoneColdPhilly Gone Cold: Philadelphia Unsolved Murders is a true crime podcast about unsolved murders and cold cases in Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley. Stephanie Green is back to discuss Netflix's latest original docuseries, The Devil Next Door, in which John Demjanjuk may or may not have been a Nazi extermination camp's Ivan The Terrible...and his true identity may or may not have been the point of the series. How is trauma "remembered"? Why did the U.S. consider some war criminals "useful"? And what did Demjanjuk really do between 1942 and 1952? Later, we talk about two different takes on crowd-solving cold cases: CrimeCon's "true crime experience," CrowdSolve; and the Vidocq Society. The Crime Report's piece on the former raised more questions than it answered, but The Telegraph's 2009 overview of the latter had me and Stephanie wondering if a hybrid isn't advisable. The panel will not be taking questions on Jack The Ripper; it's The Blotter Presents, Episode 121. Back around the turn of the century...no not 2001....no, no, not 1901...the turn of the century before THAT, in the late 1700s and early 1800s...a young man raised in a good family in France was very busy being a very very bad boy, all over France as well as a good chunk of Europe.  His name was Eugene Francois Vidocq, and his penchant for getting into trouble with the law was matched only by his way with the ladies - he was such a rounder that he married no fewer than three times during his 82 years and was never far from romantic...er...adventure.  His criminal behavior was legendary - Vidocq was so addicted to trickery, forgery and downright slippery behavior that he often helped other criminals just because he enjoyed being devious.  He landed in jail many times, and was once even sentenced to death (which he obviously ended up avoiding...somehow...).  But sometime in his mid-thirties, something happened to Eugene Vidocq.  He decided to stop plotting and running and going to jail - and begin to use his talents AGAINST criminals.  He ended up not only becoming one of the most effective law enforcement officials in history - he pretty much invented modern criminology---his methods are the basis of everything today's law men and women utilize very single day.  Take a ride back in time to 18th- and 19th-Century France with Melissa as she weaves the remarkable tale of the criminal who became the cop - who re-shaped the very nature of police work - and whose name graces the Vidocq Society, a group of criminologists, scientists and law enforcement specialists who meet every month here in the U.S. to investigate difficult-to-solve crimes.  SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR - KLEANSPA BATH & BODY - Get 15% your total order by entering the promo code TIPSTER at check out.  Kleanspa- prepare to smell delicious!   www.kleanspa.com

Three of the greatest detectives in the world--a renowned FBI agent turned private eye, a sculptor and lothario who speaks to the dead, and an eccentric profiler known as "the living Sherlock Holmes"-were heartsick over the growing tide of unsolved murders. Good friends and sometime rivals William Fleisher, Frank Bender, and Richard Walter decided one day over lunch that something had to be done, and pledged themselves to a grand quest for justice. The three men invited the greatest collection of forensic investigators ever assembled, drawn from five continents, to the Downtown Club in Philadelphia to begin an audacious quest: to bring the coldest killers in the world to an accounting. Named for the first modern detective, the Parisian eugène François Vidocq-the flamboyant Napoleonic real-life sleuth who inspired Sherlock Holmes-the Vidocq Society meets monthly in its secretive chambers to solve a cold murder over a gourmet lunch.
