Hij bleef even staan kijken.

Tonight, I'm talking to Margaret Press founder of the DNADOE Project. To answer her burning question “How can investigative genetic genealogy help identify John and Jane Does?” Margaret Press co-founded the DNA Doe Project in 2017 with Forensic Genealogist Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick. After months of work hunting down labs, experts, bones and donations, they tackled their first case in September 2017 and incorporated as a non-profit the following month. The subsequent success provided the answer: persistence, patience, and a team of skilled and spirited volunteers. That's how it's done. Margaret grew up in Los Angeles, California where at age 15 she inherited a passion for genealogy from her grandmother. While working most of her life in software development, Margaret also fell into mystery writing. Two published novels set in Salem, Massachusetts were followed by essays and short stories, and a true crime book based on a 1991 murder in her own neighborhood. When DNA testing redefined the genealogy landscape, Margaret joined the impassioned group of citizen scientists who would propel this new field to where it is today. Margaret is a proud parent and grandparent, with descendants of her own to carry her mitochondrial haplogroup C1d and passion for genealogy down her family tree. The DNA Doe Project was founded in 2017 as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation with a simple humanitarian mission: to identify John and Jane Does using investigative genetic genealogy. On March 5, 2018, they solved their first case – Robert Ivan Nichols, the John Doe previously known as Joseph Newton Chandler III. On April 11, 2018, DNADOE joined local authorities at a press conference in Troy, Ohio to identify the young woman known as ‘Buckskin Girl' as Marcia L. King – the first time in history that the world learned of the power of investigative genetic genealogy to solve cold case identifications. To date they have solved a total of 212 cases. "The Boy in the Box" case has been an enduring mystery since a young boy's remains were found near Philadelphia in February 1957. The boy was identified as Joseph Augustus Zarelli a few weeks ago after Colleen Fitzpatrick, Misty Gillis and the Identifinders team worked with Philadelphia investigators for several years using investigative genetic genealogy. Colleen gives us the inside scoop on how this identification came together utilizing his DNA after numerous failed attempts. What do you do with a cold case that happened a lifetime ago when things like DNA testing and forensic genealogy didn't exist? If you're a professor at Adelaide University in Southern Australia, you do everything you can to solve it. In December 1948, a man was found dead on Somerton Beach in a suburb of Adelaide. Tucked inside the watch pocket in his pants was a slip of paper with Persian words printed on it which meant “finished.” Over the years, dozens of people tried to identify the man with no success, but Professor Derek Abbott, who enlisted California forensic genealogist Colleen Fitzpatrick, made it his mission in life to solve the case. In this episode, we walk you through how the mystery of the Somerton Man was finally solved. Full transcript available at https://www.whatremainspodcast.com. Learn more about your ad choices. Today's episode is an interview with a woman named Colleen Fitzpatrick who has watched her mother diet throughout her life and into her 70's. Colleen decided she wasn't going to do that for her entire life, and that's how she discovered intuitive eating. She discusses how she is working on the intuitive eating principles, which include: making peace with food, learning to accept her body, gentle nutrition, and how to incorporate it without slipping back into the diet mentality. It's also really cool to hear her talk about how she is discovering that she can actually trust her body's wisdom. On December 1, 1948, an unknown man was found lying dead on the sand on Somerton Beach next to the neighborhood of Glenelg, about 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Adelaide, South Australia. He had no money or identification on him, the labels in his clothing were cut off, and his minimal possessions yielded no clues. Further adding to the mystery, a rolled-up scrap of paper with the Persian phrase "tamám shud," translating to "is over" or "is finished," was found in the man's watch pocket around the time of his autopsy. The scrap was later discovered torn from a copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, a circa 11th-century collection of poems by Khayyam, known as "the Astronomer-Poet of Persia." The book found tossed into a car after a public appeal by the police appeared to have previous writing indentations on a page adjacent to the torn-out one, revealing a local phone number and text speculated to be a coded message. With no further clues as to the Somerton Man's identity other than an abandoned suitcase left at the Adelaide railway station, a plaster cast was made of the man's bust following the coroner's inquest, and the body was embalmed nine days after its discovery and buried. For almost 74 years, the mystery of the Somerton has intrigued authorities, amateur sleuths, and the general public, including physicist, Electrical and Electronic Engineering professor Dr. Derek Abbott. For over a decade, Dr. Abbott and his team of grad students at the University of Adelaide worked on cracking the code found in the Rubaiyat and attempting to arrange a genetic DNA analysis. In partnership with internationally recognized forensic genealogist Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick, Abbott and Fitzpatrick announced on July 26, 2022, that they have finally uncovered the identity of Australia's most famous "John Doe." Extracting DNA from chest hairs found in the Somerton Man's plaster cast has led them to a name and an occupation. But will this name lead to solving the remaining puzzle pieces? Pathologists at the time believed he was likely poisoned, but why, and by whom? Was there a Cold War connection, and why did he spend his last day in Adelaide? Circling back to the alternate name for this case, tamám shud, is this mystery really over, is it finished? Visit our webpage on this episode for a lot more information.
After 74 years, Australia's most baffling mystery has finally been solved. When the body of a man was found slumped on Adelaide's Somerton Beach in 1948, with no clear identity and no clear cause of death, it set off an investigation that spawned curiosity, concern, and conspiracy theories. But after decades of following leads, The University of Adelaide's professor Derek Abbott and US forensic genealogist Colleen Fitzpatrick finally have a name. Colleen joins Gemma today to discuss their findings. Dr Colleen Fitzpatrick and Jared wrap up their discussion, including the first case the M-Vac helped solve, the media's reaction and how the first ever mention of Colleen and a colleague from Identifinders International were described. Sometimes you just have to shake your head right? Forensic genealogy is changing the way cases are solved, and many of them are years if not decades old. If the investigators can procure DNA material from the crime scene, then even if the suspect's DNA is not in the DNA database they can oftentimes use genealogy methods to develop a family tree and a name.Dr Colleen Fitzpatrick has a PhD in nuclear physics. So how did she become one of the leading experts in the world in forensic genealogy? It's all about the numbers. Statistics. Getting rid of the data that is not relevant and identifying what is. And when two of the most knowledgeable homicide detectives we know recommend we talk to her, we do it! After all, aren't both Lindsey Wade and Joe Kennedy awesome All Things Crime interviews? So of course they would know!Tune in to this fascinating discussion with the founder of Identifinders International and learn about some of the amazing cases she has helped solve! For more info on Dr Fitzpatrick, go to https://identifinders.com/ All Things Crime is a new, comprehensive video series that will explore every aspect of crime and the ensuing investigation, one video interview at a time. The host, Jared Bradley, is the President of M-Vac Systems, which is a wet-vacuum based forensic DNA collection system, and has experience traveling the world training all levels of law enforcement and crime lab DNA analysts in using the M-Vac to help solve crime. The Phoenix Canal Murders occurred in 1992-93. The murders took place in Phoenix, Arizona, and each of them involved a young woman that went for a bike ride in the early evening along the Arizona Canal, and neither one of them ever returned. The victims names were Melanie Bernas and Angela Brosso. While at a conference in Phoenix Dr Fitzpatrick met with some members of the Phoenix PD and explained to them what she could do to possibly help their case. They sent her the data, she ran it in her system and came out with the name Miller. The killers name was Brian Patrick Miller. It is almost 40 years since Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys discovered genetic fingerprints in his University of Leicester laboratory. Now DNA is an integral part of criminal investigations worldwide, providing vital evidence to secure convictions and exonerate the innocent. But the extraordinary breakthroughs in genetic science since then means a suite of new DNA tools is now available to police and law enforcement, as well as private citizens doing a spot of freelance crime fighting. How are these novel uses of forensic genetics overseen? And is there a risk of over-reach, the science running ahead of an ethical and regulatory framework? Turi King led the genetic identification of Richard III after his body was dug up in a Leicester City carpark. She's also a Professor of Genetics at the University of Leicester (Sir Alec was her mentor) and in this programme she explores the history of forensic DNA and the unanticipated role of family tree hobbyists and recreational genealogy databases in crime fighting. It was the recent Golden State killer case in the US where a serial murderer was eventually captured with the help of DNA, that thrust into the spotlight the use of private genealogy databases by law enforcement. Until this case hit the headlines the millions of family tree enthusiasts who had uploaded their DNA profiles in order to find their relatives, were blissfully unaware that the science in the genealogists' toolkit had been adopted by police officers hunting new leads in criminal cases. Turi meets one of the first private DNA detectives from the US, Dr Colleen Fitzpatrick, who coined the phrase "forensic genealogy". Colleen uses her skills as a genealogist (originally this was her hobby; she trained as a rocket scientist) to help police solve scores of cold cases. She tells Turi that the DNA genie is out of the bottle, and the stopper can't be put back in. And Turi discovers this is indeed the case. She hears about a group of private citizens, international freelance crime fighters, who, inspired by the Golden State killer case, are using DNA to track down abusive men. Lawyer and former army officer, Andrew MacLeod, spent years working in war zones and on disaster relief and humanitarian emergencies. Frustrated by what he saw as an institutional failure to stop the rape and abuse of women and girls by aid workers, peacekeeping soldiers and sex tourists, he decided to take direct action through a charity, Hear Their Cries. Their strategy is to match the DNA of children born from these abusive relationships, with relatives on the major genealogy databases ("we're doing family reunions" he tells Turi). Then, using classic genealogy skills, they can build the children's family tree and track down their fathers, wherever they might be in the world. A pilot project in the Philippines led to five out of six fathers in the UK, US, Canada and Australia being confronted with their paternity obligations. The long-term aim, he tells Turi, is to send the message that with the help of DNA to identify them, there will be no escape for abusive men. If they have committed a crime, they will eventually be tracked down and made to pay. Also in the programme: Gill Tully, former Forensic Science Regulator for England and Wales and Professor of Practice for Forensic Science Policy and Regulation at King's College, London; Carole McCartney, Professor of Law and Criminal Justice at Northumbria University; Dr Connie Bormans, Laboratory Director for Family Tree DNA, commercial genetic testing company in Houston, Texas; Manfred Kayser, Professor of Forensic Molecular Biology and Head of the Department of Genetic Identification, Erasmus University, the Netherlands and David Baker, former Chief Superintendent Leicestershire Police, led the double murder hunt for the killer of teenagers Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth in the 1980s. Producer: Fiona Hill
On this episode of Max on Movies, Max Foizey interviews filmmaker Darren Lynn Bousman, reviews The Suicide Squad, and waxes philosophical about Colleen Fitzpatrick.

Are you a mystery fan who also loves science? This podcast is for you! Considered the founder of modern forensic genealogy, Colleen Fitzpatrick shares how genetic genealogy works. Listen and learn How she became interested in the possibilities of genetic genealogy for solving crimes, What are some examples of her more interesting cases, and What her advice is for those interested in getting into the field. Real genetic genealogy crime mysteries aren't solved after the next commercial, says Colleen Fitzpatrick. "It's hard," she adds. "It's not a couple-of-hours deal." Based in Southern California, Identifinders International helps find people, alive or deceased. They might help solve issues around unclaimed property or fraud cases as well as identifying victims and perpetrators in violent crimes. Colleen Fitzpatrick actually has a doctorate in nuclear physics, so is no stranger to the hard sciences. In 2011, it occurred to her that the markers people used in genetic genealogy were the same markers forensic science was using to get crime scene Y chromosome DNA profiles. She realized she could take a forensic Y DNA profile and compare it to genetic genealogy databases and identify the last name of a criminal. In 2015, the Phoenix Police Department hired her to apply genetic genealogy to cold cases and her work helped solve the Phoenix Canal Murders. She tells listeners some of the intricacies of this case, including how she helped narrow the suspect list from thousands to a list of five, and then, after a little more police work, helped correctly identify the killer. She shares more examples of genetic genealogy solved cases and discusses how those interested in the field might start practicing the kind of work she does. She also explains upcoming advancements in the field, including knowing "more and more with less and less," integration of mapping and facial reconstruction, and better technology over all. For more about her work and company, see their website: identifinders.com. Available on Apple Podcasts: apple.co/2Os0myK

I’ve been cooped up inside this house all day and my diet pill is wearing off. Not to worry, we’re back with more social distancing distractions! We watched the John Waters classic Hairspray (1988) with MTMUG all star (and extra in the movie) Brian Boskind (not to worry, we recorded pre-quarantine rules in CA)! Brian fills us in on working with the legend himself John Waters, Debbie Harry oozing coolness in person and Colleen Fitzpatrick almost meeting an untimely end in a teeny tiny car. And we would all lose our gay cards completely if we didn’t mention the amazing Divine as Edna Turnblad. Her performance, wardrobe and styling are worth the price of admission. If you haven’t seen the movie they turned into a Broadway musical that they then turned into another movie - do yourself a favor and add it to your quarantine watch list. In this mini-episode called a Case Break host Matt Johnson talks to forensic genealogist Colleen Fitzpatrick.Colleen is a former NASA contractor with a PhD in Physics. She is a rocket scientist, a one-time JEOPARDY contestant and the founder of two non-profits who work to identify individuals through DNA.The "DNA Doe Project" the works to identify John and Jane Does while "IdentiFinders International" works to identify murdered persons and suspect killers.Colleen and co-founder of the DNA Doe Project, Margaret Press were gracious enough to share with me how they identify victims and became the subject of an EMMY winning report I did in Los Angeles.Since our interview GEDmatch (the public wiki page for genealogists and police) has since changed privacy policy and require users to "OPT IN" to allow law enforcement to review uploaded DNA. Without that ability suspect killers like Joseph James DeAngelo would not be caught and cases would stay COLD.More info and Pictures:http://www.truecrimedeadline.com/DNA Doe Project:http://dnadoeproject.org/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/posts/true-crime-lets-26942079?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=postshare)

On October 2, 1976, a farmer and his young granddaughter were riding a tractor through the fields of Seneca, Illinois. The farmer saw what he thought to be a deer laying in a ditch and wanted to show his granddaughter. As he approached, he found a young woman, nude, her head covered in a plastic bag and a sweater. The farmer drove back home and notified authorities. Soon after, the Grundy County Sheriff’s officers arrived and found a young black woman dead of a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities tried to identify the woman but no one came forward. They were unable to match her to any missing persons reports. Six weeks later, on Thanksgiving Day, she was buried in an unmarked grave in a local cemetery. 43 years later, she remains unidentified. On this episode of The Vanished, we are taking a look at the other side of missing persons cases; the unidentified.Jane Doe's case was re-opened last year. Deputy Coroner Brandon Johnson and Chief Coroner John Callahan join us to speak about their mission to give Jane Doe her name back. This episode also includes an interview with Cook County Detective Sergeant Jason Moran who is assisting with Jane Doe's case and also working to identify the remaining unidentified victims of serial killer John Wayne Gacy. Finally, we spoke to Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick from the DNA Doe Project about what they are doing to help solve cold cases just like Jane Doe's. If you have any information about Jane Doe’s identity or her murder, please contact Grundy County Deputy Coroner Brandon Johnson at 815-941-3359 or email him at bjohnson@grundyco.org.You can follow Jane Doe’s story on Facebook at facebook.com/grundycountycoldcase.This episode was sponsored by:Lending Club- Go to LendingClub.com/Vanished to check your rate in minutes and borrow up to $40,000.Headspace- Start your journey to a healthier, happier life by subscribing to Headspace. The Genealogy Gems Podcast with Lisa Louise Cooke - Your Family History Show
Published Nov 2, 2008 I am very happy to announce that I just launched my brand new podcast called . The new show really captures two areas of focus that are really sort of outside the focus of this show. First, I wanted to do a show that anybody could stumble upon and with absolutely no prior experience in genealogy be able to listen to and enjoy and that would walk them step by step through the process of doing family history research. It's like a long term free seminar that you can listen to and work along with! The other area I've wanted to focus on is success stories and words of wisdom from experienced genealogists. As I travel around going to conferences and as I read my email, I hear so many great stories. I wanted to have a show where I could really showcase these stories and the wisdom of experienced genealogists. Newbies to genealogy will get a sense of what they can look forward to, and more experienced genealogists like you guys can enjoy hearing personal stories from those that you have probably heard of in the world of genealogy. So that's what you'll find at - Personal conversations and stories from the experts, and a genealogy how to course all wrapped in to one. Flash video issue has been resolved. GEM: Profile AmericaCash Register History GEM: Interview with Colleen Fitzpatrick, The Forensic Genealogist Website GEM: Ben Sayer reviews genealogy software for the Macintosh computer: MacFamily Tree. GEM: Quilting Family Traditions The ladies in our family are Connie Drew, Stacie Sanders, Steffanie Wicker, Shannon Stewart, Shellie Ireland and Brooke Drew Lee wrote me to say "Seeing your own love of quilts, you know how precious these handmade creations will be to our descendants throughout the generations. And so it goes, passing on skills, love and enjoyment across the generations through the use of sewing needles..." Great Family Tradition & Heirloom Ideas from Lee and Connie Drew: Sister Quilts - Round up relatives from the neighborhood or around the country and start a tradition that will create lasting heirlooms. If you don't have a lot of quilters in your family, how about doing cross stitch or scrapbook pages. Create a family tree wall hanging. There are so many mediums you could use. Quilting, applique, cross stitch, painting, the options are pretty limitless. I love how Connie incorporated family silhouettes into the tree. Create unique heirloom clothing. Not artistic or handy with a needle? How about creating custom shirts on a website like . Just upload your images and add text if you like. How about a shirt for each person with the photo of the ancestor they remind you of most? And you could still sew in a little tag that says it was created with love from grandma like Connie did. Whether you're really artsy or don't have a creative bone in your body, there's a project out there for you that will allow you to express yourself, and promote lasting family traditions.
