The Grooming Model: A Cautionary Tale (BONUS Episode)

A predator rarely “shows up” as a stranger in the dark. Sometimes he shows up as a trusted helper with a badge, a friendly smile, and the perfect reason to be near your child. In the final episode of Season 7, we talk with Conference on Crimes Against Women presenter Chris McGhee, the father of a survivor and a relentless advocate for criminal justice reform, to unpack how sexual assault grooming actually works and why it can fool entire families.Chris breaks down grooming as a deliberate playbook: selecting vulnerability, building trust, crossing boundaries in small steps, then using shame and fear to keep a victim quiet. He shares how his daughter Grace was targeted by a school resource officer who first positioned himself as a mentor, then weaponized his authority, his community reputation, and Grace's relationships to trap her. We connect these real-world details to the grooming model described by Dr. Georgia Winters and Dr. Elizabeth Jeglic so listeners can recognize the patterns, not just the headlines. We also talk about the aftermath: PTSD, triggers, and the unique pain of watching a case end in a plea deal that doesn't feel like justice. Chris explains how disappearing-message platforms like Snapchat can complicate investigations, and how survivors can experience secondary victimization while navigating reports, interviews, and court decisions. Finally, we focus on prevention and change: open parent-teen communication, removing blame from children who were manipulated, and pushing for anti-grooming laws and accountability when mandated reporters abuse power. If you care about child safety, sexual assault prevention, and real criminal justice reform, listen through and share this with someone who needs the language to spot grooming sooner.

What Were You Wearing?: Rewriting the sexual assault narrative through a survivor-centric exhibit

“What were you wearing?” sounds like a question, but it often functions like a verdict. From the the 2026 Conference on Crimes Against Women in Dallas, we sit down with Dr. Mary Simmerling and Dr. Denise Huskins Quinn to unpack the What Were You Wearing exhibit, a traveling art installation that recreates the everyday outfits survivors wore during sexual assault and pairs them with stories, audio, and case artifacts. The result is confronting and deeply human, designed to put the work of bearing witness back on the community and to dismantle victim blaming in real time.Mary traces the exhibit back to a poem she wrote after her own assault at 18 and explains why art can reach places training manuals cannot. Denise shares the harrowing facts of her 2015 kidnapping and rape, and the second trauma that followed when police and media pushed a false narrative that the crime was fabricated. We talk about confirmation bias, interrogation tactics like the Reid technique, and the impossible “credibility tests” survivors get trapped in, from being judged as too emotional to not emotional enough. We also dig into what it means to make a problem “visible” when shame and silence keep so many stories hidden, and how the team thoughtfully includes well-known cases, including their work with the family of Gabby Petito. Finally, we preview a new companion installation built around another loaded question: “Why didn't she just leave?” and the life-or-death realities of domestic violence, resources, and lethality risk during separation.

In 2024, the world learned the name Gisele Pelicot. Between 2011 and 2020, she was drugged and raped in her home in France by her husband, Dominique, and dozens of other men while she was unconscious. In a landmark trial, the then-72-year-old Gisele waived her right to anonymity as evidence revealed at least 200 rapes, many of them filmed. Dominique recruited men through a sex chat website, giving detailed instructions on how to abuse his wife. But this is not an isolated case. In 2026, CNN uncovered allegations of a global network of men in group chats sharing tips on drugging and raping their wives, alongside more than 20,000 “sleep content” videos. Investigative journalist Saskya Vandoorne joins us after infiltrating these groups and speaking to survivors. LINKS Learn more about CNN's investigation here. Today on Uncommon Sense, we're talking about “law enforcement” and why so many people no longer feel like laws are actually being enforced equally or consistently, especially when it comes to powerful and well-connected individuals connected to the Epstein scandal. We discuss the growing public frustration surrounding the unreleased and heavily redacted Epstein files, the lack of visible accountability for elite predators, and why so many Americans feel the justice system has failed women, children, and vulnerable people. We also talk about why local police departments, sheriffs, prosecutors, and public officials should be demanding full transparency and supporting the release of the complete unredacted Epstein files so the public can see the truth plainly. This episode also goes into the broader leadership crisis facing America and much of the world: weak leadership, fear of confrontation, and silence in the face of corruption. We discuss the need for stronger moral leadership, stronger families, stronger communities, and men willing to stand up publicly against evil instead of shrinking back from difficult conversations. If laws are not enforced equally, trust in institutions collapses. If justice is selective, people stop believing justice exists at all. It's time for courage, accountability, truth, and leadership again.--https://www.youversion.com/bible-app

The law says “equal protection,” but Wendy Murphy argues the U.S. legal system still keeps women on the outside of that promise and the proof is in how gender-based violence gets handled. From rape statutes that require force to charging practices that slow-walk sexual assault complaints, we trace how constitutional doctrine, policing discretion, and courtroom culture combine to under-protect women and girls and to re-victimize survivors who try to seek justice. Wendy, an attorney and former child abuse and sex crimes prosecutor, breaks down the difference between equity and equality in plain language: equality is the constitutional floor that controls how government must treat people, while equity is impossible to achieve on top of a broken baseline. She explains how the legacy of coverture and the Supreme Court's approach after Reed v. Reed produced what she calls “unequal equal rights,” leaving room for laws to be enforced differently and worse when the victim is female. We also dig into stark examples: rape laws that treat bodily autonomy as less protected than property, hate crime statutes that often exclude sex, and evidence rules and courtroom orders that burden victims in ways other crime victims never face. From there we shift to what can actually change. Wendy walks us through the Equal Rights Amendment's long fight, why litigation still matters, and why education is a missing catalyst for constitutional reform. We also talk about Title IX enforcement in schools and why treating sex-based civil rights as second-class shapes girls' expectations of safety for life. If you care about criminal justice reform, victims' rights, constitutional law, or ending violence against women, this conversation gives you a clearer map of the problem and a strategy for action. Check out Wendy's related article, "Unequal Protection of the Laws for Women is ConstitutionalTerrorism, So How Come Nobody Knows About It?": https://digitalcommons.onu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1357&context=onu_law_review

In today's episode we turn our attention to Manipur; a state in India's Northeast that has been experiencing conflict on ethnic lines. In 2023, the violence between the valley-dwelling Meitei community and hill-based Kuki-Zo tribes erupted in full force: homes burned, villages razed, thousands displaced, and lives forever changed. As per data from the National Crime Record Bureau, crimes in many categories, such as arson and murder surged. Arson cases alone soared from just 27 in 2022 to 6,203 in 2023, while rioting cases rose from 84 to 5,421.However, the number of registered crimes against women showed a 30% drop. The number of rape cases fell from 42 in 2022 to 27 in 2023. Why did crimes against women decline during a period of widespread violence, and what might this reveal about reporting, safety, and justice in conflict-torn Manipur? Tune in! Guest: Siam Thangsing, an independent researcher who has published work on Gender and Health during the conflict; and Greeshma Kuthar, a reporter and lawyer who has been in Manipur's conflict zones. What if the language we use could change the way we understand and address gender-based violence? Join us for a compelling conversation with Kelsey McKay, a former prosecutor and expert in gender-based violence, recorded onsite at the 2024 Conference on Crimes Against Women in Dallas, Texas. We explore the profound impact of terms like "victim" and "survivor," the importance of personal choice in identification, and the dehumanizing effects of legal jargon. Discover how evolving terminology within law enforcement and the criminal legal system can better recognize non-physical forms of abuse, such as coercive control, and why it's crucial to enhance empathy and support for victims.Dive into the heart-wrenching complexities of victim credibility in legal contexts involving sexual violence and substance use. Expert insights from Russell Strand illuminate how substance use should never undermine a victim's credibility and highlight the necessity of understanding trauma responses. We critique systemic biases that scrutinize victims more harshly than defendants and emphasize the need to shift perspectives to support victims more effectively. Learn about the significant implications of non-fatal strangulation in abuse cases, as informed by research, and why accurate documentation and better training for law enforcement are paramount. Finally, we tackle the transformative power of language in the criminal legal system with a focus on initiatives like "Uncooperative," which aims to shift systemic responses through survivor stories. Reflect on the societal burdens placed on victims and the importance of believing them as the first step toward ending domestic violence. This episode is a must-listen for anyone committed to improving the support systems and legal frameworks that protect and empower those affected by gender-based violence.

Confronting the shadows of abuse and the resilience of the human spirit, author Rachel Louise Snyder joins us for an unsettling yet vital conversation in our latest episode. With her raw and deeply personal memoir, "Women we Buried, Women we Burned," Rachel doesn't just recount her own experiences with abuse and addiction, but illuminates the pernicious societal structures that sustain violence against women and children. We traverse the often-misunderstood dynamics of familial abuse, the failures of legal and support systems to grasp the full picture, and the complexities involved in ending abuse without severing the ties that bind. The dialogue takes a turn into darker territories as we explore the devastating realm of child abuse within religious institutions and the tumultuous landscape of foster care, sharing insights from her own life-changing stint in Cambodia. These experiences unearth a profound understanding of abuse and trauma that transcends cultures and borders. As Rachel's narrative gains traction with the possibility of adaptation for a Netflix series, we underscore the increasing need for these critical stories to be shared and recognized in mainstream media, paving the way for change and awareness.Wrapping up the episode, we pause to acknowledge the healing power of books, and the beacon of hope they represent for those in the throes of overcoming abuse. The upcoming 2024 Conference on Crimes Against Women stands as a testament to this commitment, promising to shine a light on these issues and foster a community of support and understanding. Join us for this profound discussion, where stories of adversity are met with unyielding hope, and the conviction that conversations like these can truly make a difference.

“I knew right away that sexual violence was part of the events of October 7, but obviously, I could not have known the extent of the cruelty that Hamas engaged in,” says Professor Ruth Halperin-Kaddari, who served for 12 years on the UN Committee on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women. Halperin-Kaddari now feels “completely betrayed” by the international women's rights organizations with whom she's worked for years, for their failure to condemn - or even recognize - the rape, kidnapping and other atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists against Israeli citizens on October 7. In conversation with Haaretz Weekly host Allison Kaplan Sommer, Halperin-Kaddari, a member of the newly-formed Civil Commission on Hamas's Oct. 7th Crimes Against Women and director of the Rackman Center for the Advancement of the Status of Women at Bar-Ilan University, explains that “unlike any previous incidents of 'conflict related sexual violence,' as the UN calls it, the Hamas terrorists had body camera and they filmed their actions. They broadcasted it both to the families of the victims and on social media, so the horrific footage emerged right away.” Also on the podcast, domestic violence advocate Lili Ben Ami, founder of the Michal Sela Forum, expresses her deep concern over the dramatic expansion of the ability of Israelis to obtain personal weapons in a campaign initiated by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir. Her organization, she says, “is now receiving calls every day from worried women and domestic violence survivors” that their abusers will now get access to a firearm. When her group looked into the matter, she tells Haaretz Weekly, they found that the distribution plan did not contain a screening mechanism that would prevent men with a criminal record related to domestic violence from obtaining a gun.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The criminal justice system is the avenue that victims and survivors are legally expected to take when seeking justice for crimes committed against them. However, this system is primarily designed to ensure that the rights of both victims and defendants are upheld. Unfortunately, the rights for victims and survivors - both human and legal - are disproportionately compromised by an overabundance of caseloads, insufficient financial resources, and limited manpower along with the pervasiveness of unqualified personnel who many times are neither trauma-informed nor victim-centered in their approaches, processes, or remedies. These deficits leave victims and survivors exposed to injustices, inferiority, and sometimes incarceration. Former prosecutor Kelsey McKay joins the conversation to highlight the ways in which victims are often re-victimized by the very system that should be in place to protect them, and shares strategies on how survivors and their families can be better treated and supported as they seek the justice they deserve.Kelsey McKay is a former prosecutor and a highly recognized expert on criminal asphyxiation, domestic violence, sexual abuse and other forms of power-based crimes. As a prosecutor, she spent 12 years handling complex cases and designing creative solutions. She has trained practitioners across all systems and represented individuals as they navigate the criminal system. With a skill for implementing change and working across disciplines, she appeals to audiences from the Pentagon to festivals such as SXSW, bringing cultural awareness to the need for systems change. Built with solutions engrained in efficiency, empathy and equality her approach recognizes the limits of practitioners and the vulnerability of survivors. Her influence has built a team facilitating solutions that move professionals and communities from awareness to action. Her new non-profit, RESPOND Against Violence, is a multidisciplinary think tank seeking to generate sustainable change in our society's collective response to violence and trauma.

The Good Samaritan said the twins told her, "that their mom kept them locked in the laundry room, naked, zip tied from the ankles and handcuffed from the wrist.”  When investigators interviewed the twins, they reportedly said they were not allowed to use a toilet and were made to drink their own urine and live in the laundry room, which was filled with feces.   Police detained the children's mother, identified as Zaikiya Duncan, 40, along with her boyfriend, Jova Terrell, 27.   Joining Nancy Grace Today:  Sarah Ford - Legal Director, South Carolina Victim Assistance Network, SCvanLegal.org,  Former Prosecutor focusing on Crimes Against Women and Children, Facebook: "SCVAN Legal Services Program", Adjunct Professor, Claflin University & South Carolina State University Dr. Bethany Marshall - Psychoanalyst (Beverly Hills, CA), DrBethanyMarshall.com, New Netflix show: 'Bling Empire' (Beverly Hills) Mike Hermann - Private Investigator (California), www.hermanninvestigations.com, Former Police Lieutenant, Co-Founder of the non-profit organization "PTSD Brotherhood, Inc.", Co-Host: "PTSD Brothers: Brotherhood of Service Podcast", PTSDBrotherhood.org Dr. Free N. There is a renewed push for DNA testing on the evidence in the JonBenet Ramsey murder case. Ramsey, 6, was reported missing by her mother the day after Christmas 1996. Patsy Ramsey reported finding a ransom note that demanded more than $118,000. John Ramsey discovered the girl's body the same day in the basement of the family's home in Boulder, Colorado. Investigators determined that JonBenet was strangled and had an 8.5-inch fracture to her skull. No one has been charged in connection with the killing. John Ramsey spoke at the CrimeCon 2022 convention in Las Vegas, where he called for an independent agency to test DNA from his daughter JonBenét Ramsey's case. Ramsey said he wanted the independent agency to conduct the DNA analysis instead of the Boulder Police Department, whom Ramsey says botched the investigation. Bowen Turner's latest arrest for probation violation means he will now have to register as a sex offender. The South Carolina man accused of three rapes was arrested for disorderly conduct and given bail, but Turner denied bail on another charge stemming from a probation violation. Turner, 19, was arrested on Mother's Day and after his arrest, he allegedly called a female jailer the "B-word" and tried to bite off the finger of another. This latest incident happens after a controversial sentence was handed down in April. Orangeburg County Court Judge Markley Dennis sentenced Turner to five years of probation as part of a plea for assaulting a woman in 2019. The charge was reduced from an earlier charge of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, even though the victim was willing to testify and it was the third sexual assault accusation against Turner in less than two years.  Ankle monitoring logs show that Turner violated his previous bond dozens of times, visiting golf courses, restaurants, shopping centers and even going out of state. At his court appearance attorney Jason Turnblad o asked Judge Roger Young to take into consideration Turner's "young age [and] his lack of a prior record before pleading to these charges." Turner also admitted to having an "alcohol problem" that he would like to address through rehabilitation.  The judge ruled however that Turner knew the rules of his probation.  Joining Nancy Grace Today: Chloe Bess - Victim  Karl Stoller -  Victim Dallas Stoller's father Sarah Ford - Legal Director, South Carolina Victim Assistance Network, SCvanLegal.org,  Former Prosecutor focusing on Crimes Against Women and Children, Facebook: "SCVAN Legal Services Program", Adjunct Professor, Claflin University & South Carolina State University Topo Padilla - Bail Bondsman 39 years (Sacramento, CA) President, Professional Bail Agents of the United States, Greg Padilla Bail Bonds; Instagram/Twitter: @TopoPadilla,  Caryn Stark - NYC Psychologist; Twitter: @carynpsych, Facebook: "Caryn Stark" Katie Kamin - Breaking News Anchor / Investigative Reporter, Live 5 News (Charleston, SC), Twitter: @KatieKaminTV, Facebook: "Katie Kamin TV"  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Three South Carolina teen girls accuse the same man of raping them. Bowen Turner is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, but the outcome, in this case, has caused much outcry. While awaiting trial, Turner is held on house arrest with ankle monitoring. Court documents state that if Turner violates his bond, he is to be immediately taken into custody, but reports show that Turner violated that order more than 50 times, even crossing state lines without being taken into custody. One case was dropped when the victim died. In facing the other charges, Turner accepted a plea deal. He pleads guilty as a youthful offender to first-degree assault and battery. At sentencing, Turner is given five years of probation and does not have to register as a sex offender. As long as Turner follows the terms of his probation, his conviction could be expunged from his record.
