After the votes came out 6-1 against him, he resigned.California: The man who carried out the vehicle ramming attack at the Iranian protest in Los Angeles has been identified as Calor Madanescht. As the attack only wounded two people (both of whom refused medical care at the scene), the assailant has only been charged with reckless driving. Madanescht's bond has been set at zero dollars (the standard for misdemeanors in California), and he was released from jail Monday afternoon.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: In their own press release, the LAPD admits that he intended to ram the crowd and police officers, forcing several of them to jump out of the way (thus confirming deadly intent). It must be noted that the details of this case are pretty sketchy overall, considering how the attacker did not cause nearly as much damage as he could have. The odd statements found on the assailant's social media page, and the fact that he claims to be an Iranian refugee who happens to have an incredibly non-Iranian name, all add to the strangeness of this incident. However, just because this guy is the most ineffective terrorist in recent memory doesn't mean that he isn't still a terrorist. And now, he's back on the street at a time when Iranian protests are continuing throughout Los Angeles, and tensions remain palpably high in the Middle East.Any time that tensions escalate overseas regarding a hot-button issue, these tensions nearly always are mirrored within the American homeland, which often manifest in attacks or at minimum clashes between protest groups. In this case, the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force are investigating the attack, which is a moot point if the terrorist has been released by the local authorities. In Washington, President Trump has made increasingly more substantial statements regarding American involvement, indicating that the United States may become more actively involved in overthrowing the government of Iran in the very near future. These statements have been understandably vague, however in the context of the current demonstrations this is probably the early indication and warning of another round of American strikes (or more direct involvement) at some point.-HomeFront-USA: Around the nation, various protests and states of civil unrest continued over the weekend, with some being more kinetic than others. Protests remained constant in the usual cities; Portland, Minneapolis, Manhattan, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Washington D.C. all were host to anti-ICE demonstrations.California: Anti-ICE protests continue state-wide, however other types of protests and demonstrations are underway, which have increased in severity over the past few days. In Los Angeles, a vehicle ramming attack was reported at an Iranian protest Sunday afternoon, which resulted in the wounding of several demonstrators. The demonstration itself was an anti-regime/pro-Shah protest, in support of overthrowing the Ayatollah. As demonstrators were marching up Veteran Avenue to the east of the Federal Building, one assailant drove a Uhaul truck north up Veteran Avenue, conducting a slow-speed ramming into the crowd, before coming to a halt at the corner of Rochester and Veteran Ave. After the vehicle came to a halt, the driver was detained by police, and has not yet been identified.Analyst Comment: This incident was a deliberate attack, as evidenced by the signage that had been affixed to the Uhaul truck by the attacker. Despite these signs, however, the motive remains unclear as the messages are contradictory. The attacker's signs referenced, anti-Shah, anti-regime, and anti-Ayatollah sentiments, so it's not really clear what ideology the attacker was trying to support. Nevertheless, the attack was conducted for ideological reasons, even if they aren't immediately clear at the moment.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: In Minneapolis, a general state of unrest continued over the weekend, with various insurgent groups increasing the intensity of their efforts. Several independent journalists have been assaulted by the mobs at varying locations, as parts of the city descend into a state of lawlessness.Most of the violence has been contained to a few hotspots around the city. In the downtown area, the Renaissance and Hilton Hotels have remained under a state of unrest following the destruction caused by rioters over the weekend. Smaller, but more long-term protest sites have been established at these locations, in addition to the persistent protest that is ongoing at the Whipple Federal Building to the south of the city.This afternoon a riot broke out to the east of the Renee Good shooting site, at the corner of E 34th Street and Park Avenue. On the morning of April 19, 1995, a former US Army soldier parked a rented Ryder truck in front of the Alfred P Murrah Federal Building, located in downtown Oklahoma City.   Inside the truck was everything he needed to carry out his plan of terrorism and mass murder. He had a large bomb, which he created using agricultural fertilizer and some chemicals, including diesel fuel. After parking the car, he got out and walked toward his getaway car, a yellow Mercury Marquis.   He ignited a timed fuse, and a second fuse as backup.   Inside the building, in one of the office conference rooms, the Oklahoma Water Resources Board had just begun a 9 am meeting.   The blast effect was equivalent to over 5000 pounds of TNT, and could be heard and felt 55 miles away. The blast either destroyed or damaged 324 buildings within a 4-block radius. 86 cars were either burned or destroyed, and a large section of the Federal building had been reduced to rubble. News crews were shocked when they first viewed the damage from their helicopter.   Inside the building, 163 people were killed. Additional casualties were one person in the nearby Athenian building, one woman in a parking lot across the street, two people in the Oklahoma Water Resources building, and a rescue worker who was struck on the head by falling debris. In total, 168 people died that day. 19 of those were children. Almost 700 other people were injured.   My guest today, Amy, was in the Federal Building that morning. She worked on the third floor, at the Federal Employees Credit Union.   You're about to hear her talk about what happened to her that day. But just as amazing is what has happened to her SINCE that day.   And on top of that – this is a Flashback episode. Amy told this story on the podcast about 5 years ago. This past week, the Superior Telegram released it's 26th episode of Archive Dive, which is a monthly history podcast where we “dive” into the archives of historic events, people and places in Superior and Douglas County.  For this month's episode, Telegram reporter Maria Lockwood and local historian and retired librarian Teddie Meronek discuss the old post office in Superior. It  has worn many hats since it was completed in 1908. In addition to a courthouse and post office, it has been home to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Douglas County Historical Society, Internal Revenue Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation and it currently houses a theatre company. Now known as the Superior Entrepreneurship Center, the building has been turned into a one-stop shop for economic development. Maria and Teddie talk about  the history of the Superior landmark, which was designed by architect Earl Barber. They also discuss other buildings that Barber put his stamp on and much, much more. The building cost more than $300,000 to build and adjusted for today's cost, it would have been approximately $10,000,000. Many people have thought the building was only a post office, not knowing about the federal courthouse upstairs. In fact, while most locals have referred to it in recent years as the "old post office," its official name was the Federal Building. A Sterling Heights high school student has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting another student. It happened last week at Henry Ford the Second High School. The school is working with families and students to provide support if needed.  -- Legionella -- the bacteria that can lead to Legionnaires Disease -- has been detected in the McNamara Federal Building in Detroit. A Republican lawmaker wants San Francisco's main federal office building — named after former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — closed down until the “threat to public safety” has passed following an explosion of crime outside the facility.In early August, the Department of Health and Human Services warned workers to steer clear of the Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building “for the foreseeable future” over safety concerns, including a proliferation in drug dealing outside the facility.On Wednesday, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) suggested workers relocate to other government facilities in the Bay Area where they won't be “fearing for their lives.”“Working at a Department of Health and Human Services building shouldn't be a risk to your health or life, but it is now due to former Speaker Pelosi and the other liberal politicians that have allowed criminal chaos to overtake the streets of San Francisco,” Ernst said in a statement to The Post. Support the show
