On the morning of April 19, 1995, a former US Army soldier parked a rented Ryder truck in front of the Alfred P Murrah Federal Building, located in downtown Oklahoma City.   Inside the truck was everything he needed to carry out his plan of terrorism and mass murder. He had a large bomb, which he created using agricultural fertilizer and some chemicals, including diesel fuel. After parking the car, he got out and walked toward his getaway car, a yellow Mercury Marquis.   He ignited a timed fuse, and a second fuse as backup.   Inside the building, in one of the office conference rooms, the Oklahoma Water Resources Board had just begun a 9 am meeting.   The blast effect was equivalent to over 5000 pounds of TNT, and could be heard and felt 55 miles away. The blast either destroyed or damaged 324 buildings within a 4-block radius. 86 cars were either burned or destroyed, and a large section of the Federal building had been reduced to rubble. News crews were shocked when they first viewed the damage from their helicopter.   Inside the building, 163 people were killed. Additional casualties were one person in the nearby Athenian building, one woman in a parking lot across the street, two people in the Oklahoma Water Resources building, and a rescue worker who was struck on the head by falling debris. In total, 168 people died that day. 19 of those were children. Almost 700 other people were injured.   My guest today, Amy, was in the Federal Building that morning. She worked on the third floor, at the Federal Employees Credit Union.   You're about to hear her talk about what happened to her that day. But just as amazing is what has happened to her SINCE that day.   And on top of that – this is a Flashback episode. Amy told this story on the podcast about 5 years ago. So at the end you'll hear a conversation I had with her just recently about what she's up to recently. I'll just say this – she's retired now, but she's definitely not relaxing.     If you'd like to contact Amy, you can do that through her website: AmyDowns.org     Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/215   Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. The podcast assumes a more serious tone this time around as we reflect on the thirtieth anniversary of the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building in downtown Oklahoma City, still the largest-scale and most deadly domestic attack in the nation's history. As a result of the attack, 168 people (adults and children) died. Today our guest is current OKC Fire Chief Richard Kelley, who has spent more than three decades in service to the local fire department and was a first responder the day of the bombing. He recounts what he saw on the scene that day, the scare of a rumored second bomb, and speaks on the important lessons the response to that day can teach future generations of first-responders and Oklahomans.  Also on this week's show, the editors share what they remember about that day in 1995. This includes Chris, a working video journalist at the time. You won't want to miss it!

She wrote more than 20 books across forms, from her first poetry chapbook Art in the Court of the Blue Fag, published by Black Sparrow Press in 1977, to Heavy Daughter Blues, also published by Black Sparrow in 1987. This month, Cascadian Prophets is bringing back this February 2002 interview with the artist. In it, she discusses the African-American literary avant garde, why such a movement is helpful, and how literature in the U.S.A. has suffered because African-American writers are still "too busy, advocating for our status as human beings in this country.” She also touches on how universities in the U.S.A. have a corporate mindset, and much more, before reading American Sonnets from her book Mercurochrome, Black Sparrow Press 2001. She lived until 2013. Her assessment that "...when it comes to social programs, there's this complacency. There's this huge apathy. Look what happened after the bombing in Oklahoma City, of the Federal Building. what happened after Columbine. This amnesia that seems to fall like a curtain after very significant events. There's a criminalization process taking place of women and youth in this country." continues to be a perceptive and foretelling analysis. This past week, the Superior Telegram released it's 26th episode of Archive Dive, which is a monthly history podcast where we “dive” into the archives of historic events, people and places in Superior and Douglas County.  For this month's episode, Telegram reporter Maria Lockwood and local historian and retired librarian Teddie Meronek discuss the old post office in Superior. It  has worn many hats since it was completed in 1908. In addition to a courthouse and post office, it has been home to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Douglas County Historical Society, Internal Revenue Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation and it currently houses a theatre company. Now known as the Superior Entrepreneurship Center, the building has been turned into a one-stop shop for economic development. Maria and Teddie talk about  the history of the Superior landmark, which was designed by architect Earl Barber. They also discuss other buildings that Barber put his stamp on and much, much more. The building cost more than $300,000 to build and adjusted for today's cost, it would have been approximately $10,000,000. Many people have thought the building was only a post office, not knowing about the federal courthouse upstairs. In fact, while most locals have referred to it in recent years as the "old post office," its official name was the Federal Building. You can find that episode at superiortelegram.com or wherever you also get this podcast. You can find addtional episodes here. In case you missed last month's episode, we are resharing it here. In February, Maria and Teddie explored how President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration helped shape Superior. Enjoy!

When the Very Good King Josiah is informed that a long lost scroll has been found in the dusty corner of a closet, he rends his garments in mourning for himself and for his people. Despite his commitment to just labor practices, and the narrator's assurance that he did what was right in God's eyes, the rediscovered scroll of Deuteronomy makes clear that he and his people had been called to an even more radical life of justice-seeking. How might this story speak into our own desire to walk (together) in the liberating Way of Jesus? Seattle Mennonite Church Sermons

Much could be said of the exaggerated and hyperbolic showmanship of this contest Elijah sets up between himself and the prophets of Baal. But step back from the spectacle, and I want to know why the people remembered this story, told it over and over, and eventually wrote it down? Might it have to do with the quiet way that Elijah calls the people to remember who (and whose) they are. “Come closer," he says. Then, in their near presence, he silently rebuilds an altar, lays 12 stones for 12 tribes, and with simple, quiet action reminds them that they are indeed God's own. They cannot worship both God and Baal. Despite the prevailing cultural norm that they don't need to choose amongst gods, Elijah seeks to convey that they must indeed choose. And that choice is consequential. Might our central and centering practice of communion similarly help us remember who we are as God's beloveds and followers of Jesus in a world where false gods vie for our ultimate loyalties?Sermon begins at minute marker 7:151 Kings 18.17-39ResourcesBibleWorm podcast: Episode 509 – Elijah and the Prophets of Baal, Amy Robertson and Robert Williamson, Jr.Image: members of Seattle Mennonite Church call for a ceasefire in Gaza at an interfaith action coordinated by Jewish Voice for Peace, at the Federal Building in Seattle, November 2023Hymn: 196, Come and Seek the Ways of Wisdom. Ready for a jarring look at the intersection of security, city policy, and the humanitarian crisis of drug addiction? You'll want to stick around for this episode. We're diving head-first into our hard-hitting analysis of the security upgrades at the San Francisco Federal Building, including the introduction of cutting-edge fence technology. We're peeling back the layers of the unnerving 525 drug-related incidents from the past year, and the unsettling experiences of federal employees. We're also dissecting the impact of APEC's unexpected venue change and the evolving world of remote work for federal employees. As we navigate this difficult terrain, we're also taking an unfiltered look at the spiraling problem of open-air drug use and escalating crime rates on the streets of San Francisco. We're investigating how the controversial move towards drug decriminalization has opened the floodgates to increased drug sales and crime. We're highlighting the proactive measures taken by corporate giants like Amazon and Ikea to battle rampant shoplifting and drug-related activities. Our conversation concludes with a thoughtful debate on the compassionate approach towards treatment versus the laissez-faire attitude towards drug use and sales. And finally, we're shining a light on the contentious role of federal officers in maintaining law and order before the much-anticipated APEC. In April of 1995, two men destroyed the Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City filling 168 people, 10 of which were children. This marathon exists to keep the memories of those victims alive and remind us that we can overcome hard things when we come together. One highlight of this marathon included an expo with a panel of legends (Bill Rodgers, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Dick Beardsley, and others) who were there to answer questions of the running community. In this episode we also got to interview race director Kari Watkins.

The 1937 Galveston Federal Building | Art Deco & Federal powerThis building is one of Galveston‘s court houses, post office, and customs house. Built in 1937 and design by architect Alfred c. Fin, this building replaced an earlier Federal building and post office on the same site. It has been home to a number of federal agencies and at one point housed the Galveston Bureau of the national weather service. Originally the building held the post office on the first floor, the postal inspectors on the second floor, various government offices on the third floor, the customs department on the fourth floor, grand jury space on the fifth floor, judges US attorneys US marshals in the ceremonial court room on the six floor, and finally on the seventh floor, cotton classifying rooms, the Bureau of Navigation, and the Bureau of Agriculture. The Art Deco style is distinctive in Galveston, as it stands out for most of Galveston‘s late 1800 buildings. It is noted that both the design and location of the building serves as a symbol of the high power of the federal government. At the time of designing the building in the 1930s, it was a practice of the day that the art deco style use regional materials whenever possible. The stone on the outer edges of the building is porous fossiliferous limestone, a rock typically found in coastal areas. As a rendition of one of Galveston‘s federal buildings, the building still houses many federal agencies and continues to stand strong in Galveston's skyline.Interested in information covered in this episode?
