In the space that is now occupied by Disney California Adventure, Disney had originally planned an educational theme park called WestCOT. This park was going to be very reminiscent of EPCOT over at Walt Disney World, but there were some notable changes suggested. Hear about what was proposed.

In my last podcast I noted an incredible array of projects that were announced at this year's D23 event. These projects which included a Cars set of attractions at Magic Kingdom that were presented before a paid audience were all encompassing, and were impressive examples of what Imagineering can potentially do. I then expressed frustration at the end of my podcast at how two days later, a graphic was shown illustrating where the Cars attractions was really going. After the podcast I wondered why I was so personally irritated at this news. Yes, I really don't think that you need to remove the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer's Island to add these projects. But that wasn't the real source of my frustration. In hindsight I really felt that Josh D'Amaro, who I had great respect--even admiration--had really played games with Disney fans. I felt it was in a subtle way a betrayal of trust, and that such a move on Disney's part was really something Disney should not do. This podcast seeks to explain why Disney struggles with fans believing in their word and in what they are doing. We will look at a history that goes decades back to where The Walt Disney Company has made promises and have reneged. We will look at a larger issue that goes from a project called WestCOT all the way to Disneyland Forward. It's about trust, transparency, and being forthright, no matter who you are. Know that I am bringing out issues I would share with any client I had in an attempt to help them improve their organization. Walt Disney said: "When they come here they're coming because of an integrity that we've established over the years. And they drive hundreds of miles. I feel a responsibility to the public." Guests today fly thousands of miles, and they spend thousands of dollars on a Disney vacation. Trust and integrity on Disney's part is the "responsibility" Walt is speaking of. And it's what we are speaking of in this podcast. __________________________________________________ My new book, A Century of Powerful Disney Insights, Volume I 1923-1973, The Walt & Roy Disney Years is available! This week, we're looking at attractions that deserve that final ride. We ask the question, What attraction would you drop everything to go experience one last time. Will you go to the Magic Kingdom for a last ride on Haunted Mansion? Would you run for Epcot if they closed Frozen Ever After? Or how about If they were shutting down Rock n Roller Coaster with Aerosmith? We also go on a couple of tangents. One about the Disney College Program and one about the history of Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Westcot. We even get into the ill-fated Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser. Overall, we really find which rides are worth that one final ride.Let us know what Walt Disney World attraction you would give that one final ride.Make sure you hit that subscribe button so you know when there are new episodes.Do you want to share your experiences? A producer, executive creative director, and Imagineer for over 31 years, Doris Hardoon, has just received the Buzz Price Thea Award recognizing her for “a lifetime of distinguished achievements.” Beginning her themed entertainment career in 1975 at Marine World Africa USA as a graphic designer, Doris was hired four years later by WED Enterprises (now known as Walt Disney Imagineering), working on projects including EPCOT's The Land Pavilion, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris. Hardoon became a senior executive creative director, producer, and creative lead for a varied portfolio of investments, working at some point on all six Magic Kingdom-style Disney parks on three continents. Realizing the “Authentically Disney and Distinctly Chinese” philosophy, Doris lead the successful realization of the Shanghai Disney Resort that opened in 2016. She also served as a creative executive for WestCOT, Long Beach's DisneySea, and Hong Kong Disneyland. Doris recently retired as an Imagineer and continues her work in the themed entertainment industry through her own design company DDesign Consultancy. On the podcast, she shares the cultural significance of her design choices, discusses how she came to be an Imagineer and she reveals hiding the names of some of her cherished teammates in the ironwork of Disneytown.

Welcome to the second part of the 'Lost Lands of Disneyland' - a series of closed attractions, forgotten announcements, and especially those plans that never made it off the drawing board. Today, Austin will discuss the event space of Disney's bygone years, Holidayland - 9 acres of baseball diamonds, a circus, and bottomless mugs of beer perfectly suited for corporate events in the 1950's. Austin will also explore the tumultuous fate of the WestCot-inspired Holiday World, where holidays and a land inspired by Epcot's World Showcase would have come together to round out the forgotten West side of the park just beyond the Disneyland Railroad. So… hold on tight as we uncover the forgotten Holiday-themed lands of Disneyland that characterized the first twenty years.
