Animal Kingdom broke Stephen this week. After scrapping multiple fully developed concepts (including a Tarzan attraction, a suspended canopy ride, and an Emperor's New Groove idea that refused to fit the park's philosophy), the team tackles one of the most challenging design questions in Disney Parks: what is missing on Discovery Island?Inspired by Shanghai Disneyland's Challenge Trails and grounded in the values that define Animal Kingdom, Stephen proposes the Wilderness Explorers Challenge Course: a multi-level treetop adventure through Discovery Island that transforms guests from observers into participants as they climb, cross, and explore their way toward Paradise Falls.Plus, listener Nate Heasley (the reviewer formerly known as "Hedgehog") joins the show with an Imagineering pitch of his own, finally proving once and for all that he is, in fact, a real person, not a woodland creature. Can a challenge course become Animal Kingdom's next great adventure? And what makes designing for this park so different from every other Disney destination?Don't forget to check us out on Instagram!

A family of six. Two international Disney parks. A brand-new mega cruise ship. And one massive question: can you actually make a trip like that work with four kids and come home happy? We sit down with D'Nesha, who went from dreaming about Disney as a kid in Louisiana to pulling off a true bucket-list itinerary across Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore, then sailing Disney Cruise Line's newly launched Disney Adventure. We talk through the real planning behind a multi-stop Asia Disney vacation, including how she booked international flights first, price-tracked shorter regional hops, and chose hotels that made transportation simple. If you've wondered how to get around in Shanghai with Didi, how Hong Kong's metro and Octopus system feels with kids, or what long-haul flying is like when you're trying to avoid turning the cabin into chaos, D'Nesha shares what worked and what surprised her. She also gets candid about jet lag, language barriers, and why crowd culture at international Disney parks can lead to shorter ride waits and longer character lines. Then we shift to the Disney Adventure cruise experience: what felt different on a brand-new ship, how character interactions and crowd control work when thousands of guests are on the app at once, and why the entertainment, dining, and photo opportunities still delivered big “Disney” moments. D'Nesha also shares two critical planning topics families often miss: medication restrictions in certain countries and how visa-free entry rules depend on onward travel proof and timing. If you're planning Shanghai Disneyland, Hong Kong Disneyland, a Singapore add-on, or your first Disney Cruise Line sailing in Asia, this conversation is full of practical tips and honest takeaways. Subscribe for more travel strategy, share this with your favorite Disney planner, and leave a review with the biggest international trip you'd attempt next. You can find D'Nesha on Instagram @raisingbabymerritts.----Adventures & Mousecapades is a passion project from Alicea & Nathan Novak - two Seattleites addicted to The Mouse. And from Marvel, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has us genuinely hyped for what looks like another tough reset moment for Peter Parker. Then we shift to Disney Parks updates and what they mean for your next trip to Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Cinderella Castle is nearly done with its repaint, DinoLand U.S.A. is officially closed, and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is moving from Aerosmith toward the Muppets. We also hit the return of high tea at the Grand Floridian, big anniversaries like Shanghai Disneyland's 10th and Tokyo DisneySea's 25th, and the newest additions that will drive crowds, including Bluey experiences, Frozen's expansion in Paris, and the refreshed Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin. Finally, we get into Disney Cruise Line growth and corporate tea. PART II: Flight 48: Author and industry veteran, Thea Lifetime Achievement Recipient, and former President of Walt Disney Imagineering, Bob Weis. When Bob Weis joined WED Enterprise in 1980, Disney owned two theme parks. Forty-five years later, Disney operates twelve parks worldwide and Bob Weis played a role in at least half of them, including Epcot, Tokyo Disneyland, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney Studios Parc, Disney California Adventure, and Shanghai Disneyland. After a short stint at his own firm, (Bob) Weis Design Island (WDI!), and Gensler, Bob is now a successful author, having recently published his autobiography, "Dream Chasing," and his first work of fiction, "Ghost Dog." Set your pocket watch now to join us as Bob climbs aboard the time machine to relive the trials and tribulations of overseeing the design and production of multiple Disney theme parks and being one only four individuals to ever hold the title of president of the world's first and most beloved themed entertainment design company.
Disney'sZootopia 2 has been a huge success in the Chinese mainland, raking in more than 3.8 billion yuan ($539.69 million) at thebox office as of Sunday afternoon, making it the second-highest-grossing Hollywood film of all time in the mainland market—only beaten to the top spot by Avengers: Endgame. The movie's cumulative box office receipts in the Chinese mainland nearly double those for North America and account for nearly half its worldwide total, underscoring China's role as a major player in the global cinema landscape. With a vast and engaged audience base, the potential for growth is immense. Zootopia 2's appeal to Chinese audiences was enhanced by Disney's engagement initiatives. Shanghai Disneyland's Zootopia-themed area, inspired by the first film, celebrated its second anniversary on Saturday. It is the world's only Zootopia-themed destination.《疯狂动物城2》对中国观众中的吸引力因迪士尼的互动推广活动而增强。 Walt Disney Animation Studio also deliberately included Chinese cultural elements, such as characters representing the Chinese zodiac signs, in thesequel. One of the film's pivotal new characters is Gary De'Snake. Jared Bush, Disney Animation's chief creative officer, emphasized the character was introduced specifically to appeal to the Chinese audience: "We knew this was the Year of the Snake and we wanted the movie to come out the same year for sure." The story of protagonist Judy Hopps leaving her small town and finding success in the big city alsoresonates deeply with Chinese audiences at a time of rapid urbanization. Moreover, the adaptation of the film's script to accommodate Chinese cultural nuances and humor ensured that the story and its jokes got through to Mandarin-speaking audiences, which highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity and understanding. The Chinese mainland market's irreplaceable contribution to Zootopia 2's global box office success is indicative of a broader trend where Hollywood films increasingly rely on international markets for their financial success. As noted by observers, China's massive consumer base and its openness to both domestic and imported films create a unique environment for cinematic success. The market's capability to nurture high-grossing films challenges the notion that it is turning away from Hollywood films. Instead, quality andcultural resonance continue to be the key factors determining whether films will be a hit or not with Chinese audiences. As Hollywood looks to the future, the importance of understanding and engaging with the Chinese market cannot be overstated. The success of Zootopia 2 may chart the course ahead for future collaborations between Hollywood and Chinese filmmakers. By incorporating culturally relevant elements and engaging in meaningful localization, studios can create films that resonate with Chinese moviegoers, which will not only enhance their box office performance, but also foster cultural exchanges and understanding between the two countries. Indeed, films such as Zootopia 2 can help bridge the emotional andperceptual gaps between the Chinese and American people, especially amid political and trade tensions. They serve as a medium for mutual understanding and appreciation of their different cultures. By showcasing shared values, such as friendship, perseverance and justice, these films highlight common human experiences that transcend national boundaries. Respect and acknowledgement of cultural diversity can also help foster a sense of inclusion and connection, thus reducing stereotypes and misconceptions that often fuel animosity. In a world where political narratives often erect barriers between nations, cultural exchanges such as those facilitated by Zootopia 2 offer a powerful counterbalance, promoting understanding and collaboration. China has become a critical market for cinematic success. Apart from Zootopia 2, Ne Zha 2, the domestic animated hit from the Spring Festival holiday, was also a global sensation. Its 15.4 billion yuan box office revenue is the highest gross ever for an animated film worldwide. This indicates China's massive consumer base remains capable of lifting films to heights unmatched anywhere else. And this is not only true of movies. Through thoughtful collaboration and cultural exchange, both China and the US can enrich their cinematic landscapes, creating a more interconnected and culturally aware audience.

Kansas City Chiefs star—and Taylor Swift's fiancé—Travis Kelce now owns a 9% stake in Six Flags alongside hedge fund Jana Partners, instantly making the struggling park chain a national headline. Former Cedar Fair CEO Matt Ouimet, however, wasn't impressed—publicly calling out the board for “cycling through CEOs, destroying value, and failing to show ownership” while urging the next chief executive to rebuild with leaders who actually understand entertainment. Philip and Scott unpack what Kelce's investment really means: Is it a lifeline, a PR distraction, or a sign activist investors are circling? The hosts also dive into the TEA Global Experience Index, which shows global theme-park attendance up 2.4% in 2024—but growth driven almost entirely by China and the Middle East, while U.S. parks stay flat and pivot to revenue optimization. With Disney, Universal Beijing, and Shanghai Disneyland leading the charge, what can domestic operators learn from markets that are still expanding? Listen to weekly BONUS episodes on our Patreon.

Asia was expected to become the new theme park capital of the world—then the pandemic hit. IAAPA Asia drew 7,000+ attendees to Shanghai, but is that enough to signal Asia's tourism comeback? Philip reports from the show floor, including takeaways from Disney executive Jill Estorino's keynote, where she credited young adult women with shaping the guest culture at Shanghai Disneyland—impacting everything from merchandise and mobile content creation to how F&B is presented across the park. Meanwhile, Legoland Shanghai, including its eight themed lands, 85 million bricks, and resort-wide creative choices, has set a new quality bar for IP-driven family parks in the region. With the Chinese park market projected to nearly double by 2028, we ask: Is the APAC surge real—and what lessons should operators everywhere take from Shanghai's blend of detail, service, and social-savvy design? "Create memories where you couldn't have ever planned it" is the perfect quote from Helen J. Shen (Maybe Happy Ending), this episode's guest on 'E-Ticket to Broadway.' On this episode Helen shares their deep love of Baymax (who in plushie-form lives with Helen) and how Disney impacted her childhood--from watching the Disney movies as a kid (big fan of "The Lion King") to going to Walt Disney World and the Disney Cruise Line, Helen understands the gateway of Disney to Musical Theatre--specifically their reaction to "The Festival of the Lion King." Listen as Helen professors her excitement for Animal Kingdom--from the attractions like "Flight of Passage" and the "Kilimanjaro Safaris," to the "Tree of Life," to the food (Helen has been deemed "The Head of Sitting & Eating"), the way in which Helen shares her love is as good as any Disney commercial. Did we mention Helen's love of the food of the Disney Parks? Beignets, & Dole Whips, & Pickles...oh my! Helen's love of Shanghai Disneyland's "Pirates of the Carribean" and her soft spot for Carousel of Progress is also discussed, with some questions from the listeners, including which characters Helen is most excited to meet at the Disney Parks. Which attraction does Helen refuse to ride at Walt Disney World? Listen to find out!
