What is the REAL reason the DCA version of the Hollywood Tower Hotel used to feel so creepy when you stepped inside?Drop in with us on this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk as we check into California Adventure's lost Hollywood Tower Hotel to decipher the history, secrets, and stories hidden within its design. In this episode, we check into the DCA and DLP versions of the Tower of Terror, wandering the gardens in the exterior queue before stepping into the lobby to see what we can find. Along the way, we play some cards, drink some tea, and explore the nuances of the differences between this version and the one we spent 23 episodes exploring in Disney's Hollywood Studios. Kate uses an Imagineering show info guide to give us a tour of this iconic lobby, Kirk teaches us some new card games, and we both take a side trip to one of the most famous hotels in America to learn how the Imagineers used fear in the collective unconscious to shape their set design.
Why did Disney's Tower of Terror change its design when it moved locations? And who was Buddy the Bellhop?Drop in with us on this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk as we check into California Adventure's lost Hollywood Tower Hotel to decipher the history, secrets, and stories hidden within its design. In this episode, we travel to Disneyland Resort to visit the California Adventure version of the Tower of Terror for the first time, covering the concept, design, changes in mechanics, and backstory of this version of the attraction. Because the Disneyland Paris version is almost identical to the one in California, we add that Tower into the mix as well on this international Disney treasure hunt. Along the way, we share some rare Imagineering documents, discuss some never-created attractions, and explore the differences between this version and the one in Disney's Hollywood Studios. Kate discusses some connections to Walt's history found in the Tower, Kirk translates some German, and we both get a little confused by the Tower's commercial mascot from 2004 that doesn't quite fit the storytelling of the Hollywood Tower Hotel. Picture if you will a most unusual attraction exit, as the Tower of Terror's final scenes hold controversy, history, and a mystery we still have yet to solve. Drop in with us on this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk as we check into Walt Disney World's Hollywood Tower Hotel one last time to decipher the history, secrets, and stories hidden within its design. In this episode, we make our way out of the Tower, but not before we find some incredible hidden gems along the way. We start at the checkout desk, highlighting several hidden connections to the Twilight Zone and finding a Halloween postcard of questionable verbiage. Kate admires the ceiling with some original Imagineering color boards, and we spy a hidden Mickey before pausing outside the locked Sunset Room for some storytelling and secrets. Afterward, we head to Tower Gifts to see how this area changed in both concept and execution from the 1990s, before heading out of the Tower and giving a warm welcome back to all who made it through this long series with us. In this episode let's talk about one of Disney's best attractions, Tower of Terror. Perfect for spooky season, this attraction has it all. We'll talk ride history, fun facts, legacy and more
There was another Hollywood Hotel designed before the Tower of Terror that inspired most of the corridor and fifth dimension scenes, but hardly anyone has ever seen its concept art... until now. Drop in with us on this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk as we check into the Hollywood Tower Hotel to decipher the history, secrets, and stories hidden within the design. In this episode, we buckle up for the beginning of this ride, exploring the Corridor scene before heading into the Fifth Dimension. Along the way, we see an extraordinary amount of rarely-seen storyboards and concept art from Imagineering that help explain the story being told in these scenes. As we move through these two scenes, Kate walks us through the Hollywood Haunted Hotel concept, Kirk educates us about seat belts, and we both explain many of the technical aspects of how the effects are achieved in these scenes. We also discuss a few effects that have changed since 1994, and how the Tower contains some of the most dangerous doors in Walt Disney World, before finding a Hidden Mickey, counting our RPMs and oscillations, and finishing our exploration of the 5th dimension with a celebration of electric fingers.

We wrap up this episode digging into the history of Hollywood's favorite lipstick, learning some glove love language, and untangling the myth (and reality) of flapper dress fringe.

Hidden under layers of dust and cobwebs, the objects on the Concierge Desk of the Tower of Terror have their secrets, scandals, and connections to the Twilight Zone that most people completely miss. In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we check into the lobby of the Hollywood Tower Hotel to uncover what secrets have been decaying before us right in plain sight at the Concierge Desk. After discussing the history of fedoras, phones, and ink blotters, we meet a Disney baroness and make a connection between the lamp and a difficult painting technique also featured in Disneyland. Kate discusses scandalous celebrity relationships, Kirk sits in the most uncomfortable chair ever, and, after naming several of the antiques in the area, we are finally ready to pick up our (purposefully creepy) suitcases and depart from the Concierge Desk. Theft, true crime, and unbelievably expensive antiques… the lobby of the Hollywood Tower Hotel holds more incredible stories than are evident on the surface. Drop in with us on this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk as we check into the lobby of the derelict Hollywood Tower Hotel to decipher the history, secrets, and stories hidden within the design. In this episode, we focus solely on the left front corner of the room: the mahjong table and tea cart. While it seems, at first glance, pretty straightforward, there is a large amount of hidden storytelling in this small area alone. Kate spills the tea of a subtle Twilight Zone connection before unfolding the newspaper on the lower level of the tea cart to share a bone-chilling true crime story. Kirk then gives us some history of mahjong and explains why this game exists in the lobby. After offering some explanation about why players today are confused by the game being played, we discuss fake cobwebs, peer inside of a porcelain pot, and pause just before turning to the Concierge desk because we sadly run out of time. The Hollywood Tower Hotel has a few secrets on its verandah, and odds are you've walked by them without even knowing they were there. Drop in with us to the Hollywood Tower Hotel as we saunter through the patio, verandah, and balcony of this iconic Disney attraction! In this episode of Distory, we explore the Imagineering details most guests miss while waiting in line for the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, including the meaning behind the statues in the garden, the storytelling of the dry pond, and some plants (both real and fake). Along the way, we will take a closer look at some Imagineering color boards, discuss the hidden meaning of the Tower of Terror's logo, and find a cornerstone that holds greater meaning than more guests realize. Kate illuminates a connection to the Twilight Zone for the lamps on the front porch, Kirk tells us some… odd… plant names, and we end this episode with a rare piece of concept art from the front porch of an earlier version of the Tower. Creepy clues are hiding in the landscaping of the Tower of Terror's exterior queue…. but only if you know what to look for. Drop in with us to the Hollywood Tower Hotel as we step into the queue of this iconic Disney attraction and explore the Imagineering details most guests miss while waiting in line for the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. In this episode of Distory, Kirk takes us on a tour of the landscaping design, identifying plants and their significance to the story being told. Kate explains some antiquated terminology on signs, we try to make sense of something that doesn't seem to serve a purpose, and find a plant that probably never should have been planted. As we wrap up this episode, Kate shares a few stories from a fellow historian, Kirk shows us a dangerous plant, and we admire a few trash cans before saying goodbye to the unsettling garden.Join us LIVE on YouTube most Thursdays at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast. Many thanks to Disney historian Joshua at E82 | The Epcot Legacy for contributing resources for this episode!Kate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD appDistory T-shirts and StickersKate's Substack

Someone connected with the Tower of Terror actually disappeared... but no one ever talks about it. Drop in with us on this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk as we creep closer to the derelict Hollywood Tower Hotel to decipher the history and warnings hidden within the design. As we step off of Sunset Boulevard and walk up the driveway, we pull out rare original Imagineering storyboards and show guides to help us understand exactly what the story is that we see in the scenery around us. Approaching the gate, we find a disappearing curb, a date with integral plot significance (that no one ever talks about), and a few changes over the years as the Tower has aged. After Kirk chats about some plants, we step inside the front gate at our own peril and start to hear ethereal music haunting the grounds. But there's more to these tunes than meets the ear, as many of them have their own story to tell that, once you realize their secrets, makes the Tower even more terrifying than you ever dreamed.Join us LIVE on YouTube most Thursdays at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast. Many thanks to Disney historian Joshua at E82 | The Epcot Legacy for contributing resources for this episode!Kate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD appDistory T-shirts and StickersKate's Substack
What does a cocktail shaker and a 5-gallon canister of kerosene have to do with the Tower of Terror?Drop in with us to the Hollywood Tower Hotel as we explore the story, mechanical design, and construction of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror! This episode of our Distory with Kate and Kirk podcast explains how the complicated ride system operates, with some unique details and information from the Imagineers who worked on the project in the 1990s. We start with a detailed telling of the attraction's backstory before moving on to explore the history of elevators, explore some Disney “firsts” (and fact check some things that were not, in fact, “first”), and then move on to explaining how this attraction was engineered. Kirk takes us back in time, Kate takes us back to Big Thunder for a moment, and we wrap up the Tower's construction journey with a few thoughts from Imagineers (and a hilarious story from opening day).Join us LIVE on YouTube most Thursdays at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast. Many thanks to Disney historian Joshua at E82 | The Epcot Legacy for contributing resources for this episode!Kate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD appDistory T-shirts and StickersKate's Substack
Everything you know about Sunset Boulevard is a lie. Well, maybe not ALL of it... But you probably don't know why it exists in the first place. On this episode of Distory, we are checking into the iconic Twilight Zone Tower of Terror to explore the evolution of the attraction's concept. After discovering how the Tower was named, we visit some rare Imagineering brainstorming notes, meet some boiler ghosts, and uncover how the design of the Tower impacted the entirety of the Sunset Boulevard expansion. Kate takes us through Kevin Rafferty's pitch to Michael Eisner, Kirk talks about design elements that came from historic places, and we pick apart the architecture to figure out the hodgepodge Hollywood Tower Hotel look. As we close down this episode, we run into Richard Nixon, meet some Queen Mary ghosts, and debunk a myth with the help of some Imagineering friends, a story that has been mistaken for truth by the Disney history community for years.Join us LIVE on YouTube most Thursdays at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast.Distory T-shirts and StickersKate's SubstackKate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD appFull Imagineering Panel Interview

The Tower of Terror was one of two major e-ticket attractions Disney considered for the Sunset Boulevard expansion. So what happened to the other one?In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we check in to a new series exploring the details and history of the Tower of Terror, beginning with its context and backstory. We start with the history of freefall rides and how they evolved over time to set the stage for the Tower later on. Kate then takes us on a weird journey through the Twilight Zone television show before we visit the development of Disney's MGM studios (and Sunset Blvd in particular) and Disney's competition with Universal Studios Florida. We finish this episode with a discussion of a unique monster-themed attraction that never got the green light at Imagineering for this Hollywood-themed park, and highlight where you can still find some small pieces of this lost concept in the Disney parks today.
