The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Our Great Coach on this episode is Tim Sheens. Tim Sheens is an Australian Rugby League coach. He played 166 games for the Penrith Panthers and then moved in to coaching in 1984. He coached the Canberra Raiders to Premierships, in 1989, 90 and 94 and then in 2005 led the Wests Tigers to the premiership. He has also coached the NSW team to the 1991 state or origin series win and the Australian team to the 2013 World Championship. Some of the key highlights are:The philosophy he borrowed from an American coach of “being consistent in treating everybody differently.” And how as a result he doesn't see people management in black and white terms. How Tim identifies 3 things that effective teams need to be doing every week: working on their public perception, thining about the opposition and making sure that small groups within the organisation don't start talking negatively about other small groups. How the best coaches are good recruiters, and they select people who are going to suit their style. If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at paul@thegreatcoachespodcast.com or contact us through our website thegreatcoachespodcast.com Hosted on Acast. Well, it's happened again - the Wests Tigers have parted ways with another coach, this time Premiership winner Tim Sheens. Just one year into a five-year plan that was supposed to see Sheens hold on to the head coaching role for 2023 and 2024, the veteran coach has told the Wests Tigers administration that he's had enough. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel Helmes and Steve Stretton take a look at the decision to allow Tim Sheens to depart. Some of the key issues looked at include: Has the departure of Sheens been on the cards since Scott Fulton was appointed? Is this another failing of the Wests Tigers board? Should Justin Pascoe and Lee Hagipantelis take responsibility? Is this just another example of the dysfunction that seems to plague our club? Joel and Steve also look at the pressure this move might place on rookie coach Benji Marshall in 2024 and beyond. It was another interesting day in Wests Tigers land, we hope you enjoy our analysis of the Tim Sheens departure.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Wests Tigers traveled to Tamworth last week and while it looks like another successful trip to regional NSW, the club again failed on the field. Playing against a Souths team looking to get back on track, the Tigers tried hard but our weaknesses were on again on show when the opportunity to achieve success was on offer. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel Helmes, Steve Stretton, and Garry Watson take a closer look back at Friday night's match. Post-match, Tim Sheens said the club still needs to recruit and also needs a bit more experience too, we take a look at the areas of the roster that the Head Coach might be referencing. He also said the team is a two to three-year project - does that mean that there's plenty more pain ahead for Wests Tigers fans? We talk David Nofoaluma and John Bateman and how the experienced pair seem to be struggling in recent times. There's also a discussion around an on-field strategy that seems to not be working for our team - short dropouts! Reports say Shawn Blore might be off to Super League, we give our thoughts on that, as well as linking Payne Haas to the report that the Wests Tigers are targetting a NSW Origin star for 2025 and beyond. The Wests Tigers continue to splutter and stutter from one crisis to the next - and this coming week looks no different. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto is joined by Steve Stretton for an update on our own petition calling for a thorough external review of the Wests Tigers administration. We thank everyone who has signed that petition and left their comments too - it is both very humbling to see the support, but also an eye-opener regarding just how much frustration and even anger there appears to be in the fan base. If you haven't done so yet, please sign the petition which can be found by following this link. The boys also take a look at what might be unfolding at Concord right now with an emergency meeting being held today to discuss the ongoing issues between Benji Marshall and Scott Fulton (interestingly, Tim Sheens was not invited). Is someone going to be making an exit from the club? What is going to be the circuit breaker here? Eddie and Steve have their say on that. Further to those issues, the boys also take a look at what these ongoing issues could mean not just for future recruitment, but also our current playing squad. There's also a look back at yet another loss, this time the Wests Tigers performance on Friday night against the Newcastle Knights. The Wests Tigers organization, especially the administration, is now (again) under the rugby league microscope. But this time it feels different, it feels more like the fans have flat-out had enough.  After another performance that can only be described as appalling, we get to have our say on what the issues are with this club.  And what we have to say might not go down too well in Concord.  Joel Helmes, Garry Watson, Steve Stretton, and Eddie Otto share their thoughts and frustrations with the ongoing dysfunction within Wests Tigers.  We call on Justin Pascoe and Lee Hagipantelis to either quit or be removed from their positions. We want a thorough review of the whole organization to be conducted. The hope Wests Tigers fans started to feel a month back is quickly turning into more frustration and angst. Last Thursday night on the Gold Coast was a bleak outing for our club, a meek performance and injuries to key spine players made it an experience most of us would be glad to forget. Then, on that tale end of all that, it appears our administration is again up to their regular hijinks with reports even Tim Sheens might have had enough. One person that looks set to find the exit is Luke Brooks. On this edition of the podcast, Eddie Otto is joined by Joel Helmes and Declan McCutcheon to discuss all the latest out of Concord. Some of the key discussion points on this pod: What went wrong against the Titans? Has that performance changed our opinion of several players? Are we happy that Luke Brooks might be getting out? Would Chad Townsend be a good fit for Wests Tigers? Have we found a new fan favourite with his unorthodox style and in-your-face attitude on the field? Where does he play next week, lock or second-row? The halves. Is the Luke Brooks and Adam Doueihi experiment finally over? And, if so, where does Doueihi play (assuming he's the one that gets moved)? Plus all the other major talking points from a mostly quite dire outing against the Bulldogs.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Wests Tigers are back in action again this Sunday at Leichhardt Oval, this time the opponents are the Knights. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto is joined by Garry Watson and Declan McCutcheon for a wide-ranging chat about everything Wests Tigers. There's some forensic examination over the status of two key off-season signings - Api Korisau and John Bateman. Was it a mistake to run Api off the bench against the Titans? Are there real concerns about his calf injury? And, re our British backrower. Is he acclimatizing? Or is there an actual injury that's keeping him out of the action? The boys also tackle a question we hoped wouldn't be on the agenda - are we willing to tolerate a slow start to the season due to Tim Sheens taking a gently, gently approach? What will the media noise be like around our coaching structure if this year turns into something similar to 2022? The attention of the boys also turns to the clash against the Newcastle Knights, in particular, the importance of the battle between the halfbacks - Luke Brooks and Jackson Hastings. There are also some tough questions asked about the long-term future of David Nofoaluma and Daine Laurie.  And Yioti gets Garry and Declan thinking with his latest quiz. It's a big edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, enjoy!  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There are now just three sleeps to the Wests Tigers Round One clash against the Titans at Leichhardt Oval. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto takes the reins and is joined by Declan McCutcheon and Garry Watson. On the agenda, is a short discussion on Mitch Moses, but a more comprehensive chat about other recruitment options now that it seems we have missed out on signing the former Tiger, now Eel. Also, with this game being Tim Sheens' 250th game in charge at the Wests Tigers, the boys look at his return as coach and what he will bring to the way the team plays. Then the attention turns to this important match-up against the Gold Coast. What should we be looking forward to seeing? What are the things that worry us about the home side? And why is it we have traditionally struggled against the Titans, especially in Sydney?  And, something different, what should Tim Sheens' final message to the team be ahead of kick-off on Sunday evening? There are all the round-one tips as well, and Garry and Declan go head-to-head in Yioti's Quiz! We hope you enjoy this big pre-game edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's the last edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast for 2022...well, that is unless there is some massive Mitch Moses news in the next two days! For what we think is the last edition of the 2022 year, Eddie Otto is joined by Garry Watson and Declan McCutcheon. On the agenda of the edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast is the exciting news that John Bateman has joined the club. The British International will be with the Wests Tigers for the next four years, starting in 2023. The boys look at what the experienced backrower is likely to bring to our team. There's a rumour doing the rounds that the Wests Tigers are trying to sign former Rooster and Warrior, and current rugby player, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.RTS is arguably one of the best fullbacks running around at the moment, yet he's hit a few hurdles in the 15-man game and might be looking for an NRL return. The rumour brings up a good topic for debate - is a fullback upgrade a priority over a big investment in the halves at the Wests Tigers?Eddie, Declan, and Garry also discuss another player signing rumour, Super League player, Jack Welsby, and there's a discussion around some comments made by Tim Sheens in regards to the 2023 Wests Tigers captain.Hit play or download for another round of 'Buy, Sell or Hold' and Garry and Declan's Wests Tigers knowledge is put to the test in the quiz.If we don't see you before midnight on December 31, Happy New Year and thanks for supporting us through a year that brought us more than our fair share of downs, but some renewed hope too.

Another off-season edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast is good to go!This time, with a slimmed-down team of just Garry Watson and Joel Helmes, we take a look at the latest Wests Tigers signings.Well, at the time of recording, unfortunately, we're really only talking about signing rumours. These, of course, include reports that former Wests Tigers Captain Aaron Woods is set to return home for one final season. We take a look at what the former Blues and Kangaroo representative prop might be able to bring to the team in 2023.What's going on with David Klemmer? Many Tigers fans thought he was Concord-bound a couple of weeks ago, we discuss that situation too.And John Bateman, he's apparently told his England teammates he's coming back to the NRL, but will his reportedly frosty relationship with Jackson Hastings have deeper ramifications? We also discuss Tim Sheens' recent comments about wanting to work with Luke Brooks and try and see if we can make sense of the Tiger's halves issue. Then, with guys like Mitch Moses, Aaron Woods, and Nathan Brown potentially recruitment targets, we take a look at the players that have had more than one stint at our great club.Names like Halatau, Richards, and Skandalis have all come and gone, and come back again! And what sets Ray Cashmere aside from all other Wests Tigers players? We hope you enjoy this latest edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast and don't forget to come and join us on the Wests Tigers Podcast Forum!
