Plenty To Celebrate For 2024 Buffalo Bills

Moran-Alytics Podcast

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran moves past the disappointing of the Buffalo Bills losing in the AFC championship to focus on plenty of reasons the team and fans have to celebrate a successful 2024 season. Losing to the Chiefs for the fourth time in five years was and remains a bitter pillow to swallow for sure. That said, there's a lot of things that went well enough for Buffalo to be able to look back on fondly. Patrick hits on a lot of those things, including a team that tied a franchise record for most wins in a season, went undefeated at home for the first time since 1991 and just the third time in team history, tied a NFL record by scoring at least 30 points in eight straight games and leading the AFC in points differential. Josh Allen probably won't win MVP but Patrick has maintained he deserves it. He spends a segment explaining exactly why, highlighting his ability to do more with less in 2024 and often saving his best games and moments for the biggest stages. He also talks about the offensive line being every bit as good as it was last year, Brandon Beane making mostly right moves with in-house evaluations during the offseason and Mack Hollins turning into a great free agent addition. That plus some quick thoughts on Myles Garrett requesting a trade, Lindsey Moppert departing WGRZ-TV and much more. Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. We consider them THE most underrated spot for wings, pizza and other great food in Western New York plus it's a great place to drink and have a great time. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter:  @PatrickMoranTB Blue Sky: @PatrickMoranTB.bsky.social Instagram: @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast  Learn more about your ad choices. It's another edition of the "Live from Imperial" series today on Talking Buffalo as Patrick Moran is joined by WGRZ-TV sports director Jon Scott to talk about big career changes, some Buffalo Bills and much more in a conversation recorded live from Imperial Pizza in South Buffalo. After spending a decade at Spectrum News, Jon is now the sports director at WGRZ channel 2. He discusses his time at Spectrum and how the job helped him grow both professionally and personally before getting into how the opportunity at Channel 2 came about the process he went through in landing the job. Of course they spend some time talking Bills just a few weeks out from training camp and how Greg Rousseau has become without question one of the five most important players to the team's success this year in addition to tempered expectations on the old guy (Von Miller) and the young guy (Keon Coleman) and players Jon's most looking forward to following during camp. That plus talk about Jon's sports teammates at WGRZ Lindsey and Johnathan, wings, relationships in the media balancing competition and much more. Make sure to follow Jon on Twitter @JonScottTV and of course check out the great work he's doing at WGRZ. Big shout-out and thank you once again to Imperial Pizza for being a gracious host and for their excellent wings. They now have two locations, 1035 Abbott Road and 1665 Main Street ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter:  @PatMoranTweets. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by WGRZ-TV sports anchor and reporter Lindsey Moppert to discuss her life and career to this point with a heavy focus on getting to know Lindsey and how she feels about working and living in Buffalo. Moppert is just approaching her mid-20's but is already beginning to carve out a nice sports broadcasting career for herself. Lindsey talks about growing up near Philly and always loving sports, with cheerleading becoming a big part of her life before she even turned five and would ultimately take her to becoming a captain on the college cheerleading team at Temple. She also talks about how the opportunity came about to join WRGZ-TV and move to Buffalo just a handful of months upon graduating college---a rarity for a young adult essentially fresh out of college to get a job in a market the size of Buffalo. Also discussed is the positive impact now former WGRZ sports director Adam Benignin had on her as well as the newest sports director there, Jon Scott. That plus the process of gaining confidence in front of the camera, views on social media, the "Fun Fact Finale" and a ton more with one of Buffalo's rising media stars. Make sure to follow Lindsey on Twitter at @LindseyMoppTV and check out the great work she's doing at WGRZ-TV. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter:  @PatMoranTweets. Unsung History
The Haudenosaunee Confederacy

Unsung History

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 13, 2023 54:31

Before Europeans landed in North America, five Indigenous nations around what would become New York State came together to form the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. When the Europeans arrived, the French called them the Iroquois Confederacy, and the English called them the League of Five Nations. Those Five Nations were the Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, and Senecas; the Tuscaroras joined the Confederacy in 1722. Some founding father of the United States, including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin admired the Haudenosaunee and incorporated their ideas into the U.S. Constitution. Despite that admiration, though, the United States government and the state government of New York did not always treat the Haudenosaunee with respect, and Haudenosaunee leaders had to navigate a difficult terrain in maintaining their sovereignty.  Today we're going to look at the relationship between the Haudenosaunee and the United States through the stories of four individuals: Red Jacket, Ely S. Parker, Harriet Maxwell Converse, and Arthur C. Parker. Joining me in this episode is Dr. John C. Winters, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Southern Mississippi and author of The Amazing Iroquois and the Invention of the Empire State. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. Be it resolved: It's time to embrace a 4-day work week

COVID-19 presented a monumental shift in the way people work. Home offices replaced commutes and cubicles, ZOOM calls took over from conference rooms, and communication went from in person to over Slack. Some people believe now is the time to re-think other conventional work practises as well, specifically the five-day work week. Companies that have experimented with fewer workday hours showed an increase in productivity, better employee retention, higher recruitment of skilled workers, and overall happier staff. Shorter weeks, proponents of the 4-day work week argue, also promote gender equality by allowing mothers and caretakers more flexible hours to do their work. Companies do better when their staff are happier, rested, and live more balanced lifestyles. Others argue that trimming the work week without affecting the bottom line is a fantasy. Companies would require extraordinary gains in productivity to make up for lost hours, and access to services would decline. Certain public service professionals, like doctors or teachers, simply cannot do more work in less time, thereby requiring the government to hire more workers at great cost to the taxpayer. And finally, many hourly wage workers depend on the five-day work week to make ends meet. Awarding a long weekend to the laptop class while requiring everyone else to work 40 hours will deepen divisions in the labour market and exacerbate already existing inequalities.  Arguing for the motion is Andrew Barnes, founder of Perpetual Guardian and author of The 4 Day Week: How the Flexible Work Revolution Can Increase Productivity, Profitability and Well-being, and Create a Sustainable Future. Arguing against the motion is Julian Jessop, former Chief Economist at the Institute of Economic Affairs. QUOTES: ANDREW BARNES “A 4-day work week is good for business, it's good for our people, it's good for our countries, and it's good for our planet.” JULIAN JESSOP “The idea that almost everybody could expect to work four days rather than five and still get the same pay they did before is unrealistic.” Sources: Euronews, BBC, WGRZ-TV, KTLA The host of the Munk Debates is Rudyard Griffiths - @rudyardg.   Tweet your comments about this episode to @munkdebate or comment on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/munkdebates/ To sign up for a weekly email reminder for this podcast, send an email to podcast@munkdebates.com. The Bills shocked a lot of people this week by re-signing Matt Milano, Darryl Williams and Jon Felciano to contracts before they even hit the open market.  Jay explains the thinking that went into the signings, how they factor into the present and future and what these deals say about the organization and Brandon Beane's ability to get things done and keep the core nucleus of this team together. They also spend time talking about several potential Bills free agents targets as well as plenty of other teams around the league as well as speculating on a few players the Bills may be interested in. Patrick also checks in on Jay's family and a discussion on how life in the Skurski household changed during Covid with both Jay and his wife, WGRZ-TV's Melissa Holmes working in the media. They also completely rail on the Buffalo Sabres for continuing to embarrass themselves and a fan base quickly detaching from the team.   The Sabres lost at home on Monday night to Washington, 6-0, marking the fourth time in their last five home games they've been shut out. Challenging. Adrenaline-pumping. Riveting. Exhausting. These words barely begin to describe working at a local TV station during a story so large it compels round-the-clock coverage. We experienced it in Atlanta last winter during "Snowmageddon", where a few inches of snow-turned-ice led to massive back-ups on the highways and left people stuck in their cars for hours. Local TV journalists in Buffalo went through it last month, when the region was pelted with a different kind of snowstorm. A seven-foot kind of snowstorm. The historic snowfall -- even by Buffalo standards -- created massive issues across the region, and its NBC affiliate, WGRZ-TV, replaced its regular programming with non-stop news coverage. Anchors, reporters, producers, photographers, and staffers across the board worked extra-long shifts -- outdoors, too, for the crews in the field. Situations like these often stretch a newsroom to its thinnest. In this case, half of the WGRZ newsroom was not there. So says longtime reporter Claudine Ewing: "Anybody who lived in the Southtowns could not get in; they just could not get out of their homes. One of our photographers live in Hamburg, and the snow was so high, he couldn't open the door." Ewing is my guest on this episode of the Telling The Story podcast. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #23: Claudine Ewing, reporter, WGRZ-TV appeared first on Telling The Story.
