Learn more about Shannon, and check out her latest projects at www.TheShannonClaire.com Here's what we covered on the episode: Shannon's Background in Photography (2:00) How Shannon and I met through a mutual friend in 2016 and why she's on the podcast to discuss branding photography and talk about how she's been able to pivot her business through the pandemic Shannon has been an entrepreneur for over 15 years and has always loved photography — in high school she wanted to travel the world taking photos for National Geographic When Shannon was first starting out she used film and was inspired by coffee table baby books, which made her want to get into taking maternity and newborn photoshoots The story of how Shannon started her successful photography business in her local town, taking any shoot that came her way, and then struggled to get clients and shoot the weddings she wanted once she moved to where she lives currently When Shannon was struggling, she learned all about building a personal brand Before, Shannon was relying on people seeing her photos and wanting to book her off those — she realized she needed to differentiate herself because there are so many photographers Shannon shares that she learned about niching down and started focusing on weddings, she then went even further down into what types for brides she wanted to work with, what types for weddings and where she wanted to shoot, etc Right when Shannon was getting to the height of her wedding photography career, she decided she didn't want to do weddings anymore, which resulted in her pivoting her business once again Transitioning Into Brand Photography + Coaching (6:35) Shannon explains that she went through a phase where she thought she didn't want to do photography anymore but realized that wasn't the case, she just wanted to be more fulfilled by it and wanted to help other women How Shannon decided to take her love of helping women grow their businesses and her love of photography and put them together into brand photography In 2015 Shannon started doing brand photography, which grew very quickly for her and by 2017 she was getting paid to travel and do photoshoots Shannon shares that her photography business has been built from word of mouth and referrals Why Shannon would strategically shoot live events for clients she was generally already working for because it was a great way to be seen, to meet people and book clients off the live event she was shooting Shannon's advice to anyone listening is to show up whenever you can as a leader for events because it can be a good way to book clients When you want to upgrade your brand photography, Shannon says you have to consider where you are in your business, see how much you can invest and highly recommends hiring a brand photographer if you are serious about building a brand Shannon shares that brand photography is an entirely different approach to photography from when she used to shoot portraits and weddings and explains the thought and strategy that goes into brand photography If you are not at a point in your business where you can afford to pay a brand photographer for a brand shoot, Shannon suggests starting with where you're at and getting some kind of lifestyle shots because those are useful too How lifestyle shots show personality and are more warm and inviting than your standard headshot, which is going to draw people in Why it's very important to choose a photographer who will know how to pose you and make you feel comfortable Shannon tells the story of a current client who had a terrible photoshoot with another photographer and claimed she never wanted to get in front of a camera again, but has been working with shannon to help her overcome that Don't feel like you have to hire the first photographer you talk to; talk to multiple and get recommendations from friends says Shannnon When Shannon started coaching people on brand strategy, she explains that it came from her own experience because she had to develop her own personal brand, saw that it worked and created her own system she was taking people through called, “Your Unforgettable Brand” How her personal brand coaching worked hand in hand with her brand photography and how she would end up using the brand coaching framework with her photography clients as well The struggles Shannon faced as a coach and a photographer because she didn't want to confuse people and lose business on the photography side because they were seeing her as a coach What Shannon has learned through all of this is that her personal brand is what has carried through everything and explains how she caterers to her audience who need both her coaching and photography Shannon explains that it comes down to knowing who your audiences are, knowing who you're selling to and being able to cater each post, each message, and each ad service to those people who need it Photography Through the Pandemic (19:18) The twists and turns Shannon's life went through between 2017 up until the pandemic and how she had set some things up in her business towards the end of 2019 that carried her through the pandemic Shannon explains that she sort of started a profit first model, nothing official but she did have a savings account for future paychecks, a savings account for taxes, and has her clients on payment plans, so that way she had money coming in during the beginning of the year A couple months into the pandemic, she started focusing more on coaching and started doing virtual photoshoots, which didn't replace the income of normal brand photoshoots but helped her stay fresh and relevant through the pandemic How doing a virtual photoshoot had never crossed her mind until a friend suggested she do it after seeing a virtual maternity photoshoot The first few virtual photoshoots came with a learning curve, but now Shannon has a method that works each time she does it Shannon explains that virtual photoshoots feel a lot like in-person photoshoots because she is still directing, posing people, taking the photos on her end, editing them and getting them back to the client within one business day How Shannon will now offer virtual photoshoots as a service indefinitely because with every new iphone that comes out, the quality gets better The virtual photoshoots have grown very organically and Shannon says that she puts availability out for virtual shoots on her platforms if she doesn't have a lot going on some weeks Growth in Coaching (24:22) In 2013, Shannon took her first coaching training but explains that it took her years to be able to call herself a coach and add that as part of her identity even though she was more than qualified to be a coach Shannon shares that she's the type of person who once she gets inspired she has to take action right away and that's exactly what she did last fall when she decided to do her mastermind How Shannon ran her mastermind for the second time on April 1st of this year with a new group of women and shares she loves learning new techniques and skills for her coaching toolbox Shannon treats her audience like she would treat her email list, which is very conversational, raw and authentic Audience growth for Shannon has happened through paid programs she's in and making those connections and explains why she tries to do a lot of guest appearances to help grow her audiences as well Why Shannon asks for connections and describes herself as a natural connector, which isn't always as warmly received online because she's noticed online marketers and coaches have never run a local business before, so it's a different type of networking Shannon thinks people are missing the mark by not taking that local business mentality and using it in their online business Connect with Shannon on her website or Instagram Links mentioned: Shannon's Website Connect with Shannon on Instagram Like what you heard? If you’re a service provider -- like a web designer or copywriter -- you might feel like you’re tethered to a single revenue stream: designing websites or writing copy. But the online world now offers more opportunity than ever to diversify your revenue streams. A mix of affiliate marketing, memberships, and online education can all be perfect complements to your service-based business. And in this episode web designer Shannon Mattern shares how she’s incorporated many of these revenue streams into her own business. In this episode, we’ll cover: The importance of setting boundaries and expectations with your clients How preparing ahead of time for your boundaries to be pushed can help remove the emotion from dealing with it when it (inevitably!) happens How packaging your services can help you more easily identify AND PREVENT scope creep How combining affiliate marketing with 1:1 design services allowed Shannon to leave her day job faster than she could have with services alone How Shannon has made sure she uses the appropriate disclosures for her affiliate relationships to stay legal What Shannon wishes she would have done in her business 5 years ago BONUS: If you’re starting something new, or this episode has spotlighted areas of your business that have you worried, now is a great time to make sure your business is in good shape legally. We have all heard this story: A woman has hit rock bottom. She is burnt out and is experiencing her dark night of the soul. Cornered by life, she feels like she has nowhere to turn. And then, miraculously, she has some major ah-ha moment–lightning strikes and everything is fixed. Birds sing, everyone breaks out into song, and the struggle is gone. I used to be addicted to these transformational stories. These stories gave me hope that permanent change was possible. That one day I would be healed. I would be perfect. The truth is, these stories of sudden transformative change keep us trapped and miserable. They feed us the lie that if we are still it is because something is wrong with us. They tell us that we haven’t suffered enough or that we haven’t been good enough to be transformed. My guest today, Shannon Siriano Greenwood, went through burnout–she hit her rock bottom and was able to climb back out. But her story is far from simple. It isn’t wrapped in a bow and it isn’t a song and dance number. Shannon is the founder of Rebelle, a membership organization that brings together women of diverse backgrounds and industries, and Rebelle Con, a boutique conference about wellness, money, community, and creativity. Both of these programs grew out of what Shannon learned going through her own dark night of the soul experience. Shannon is committed to change and to mental health as an on-going daily practice. As you will hear, some days she nails it and some days she has a lot of room for growth. Listen to the full episode to hear: Why Shannon’s friends and family did not say anything even though they thought she was pushing too hard What Shannon learned about support and friendships and the struggle to make friends as adults How to manage your energy as an introvert when you are trying to build new relationships How to set boundaries when you have not only a fear of missing out but a fear of hurting people And what Shannon tries to do on a daily basis to help her striveaholic ways Links: RebelleCon @ssiriano @rebellecon --- Helping people with High Functioning Anxiety is a personal mission for me. I have a special place in my heart for this struggle because it’s both something I dealt with unknowingly for years, and because it silently affects so many people who think this is just how it is. Working with me this way is an incredibly efficient and effective way to deal with your anxiety in the moment--without waiting for your next appointment. I have been doing this work for over 20 years and Coach in Your Pocket is the most effective and most life-changing work I have ever done. My clients are consistently blown away by how these daily check-ins combined with the monthly face-to-face video meetings create slow, lasting changes that reprogram their High Functioning Anxiety tendencies over time. Over the course of the three-month program, we meet once a month for a face-to-face session via a secure video chat, and then throughout the entire three months, you have access to me anytime you are feeling anxious, having a Monger attack, celebrating a win, or just need to check-in, and I will respond to you during my office hours (Monday through Friday, 9 am - 6 pm EST). Ready to get started? Email me: nancyjane@live-happier.com and we’ll set up a free 30-minute consultation to see if this process is a good fit for you

Shannon Pickering is a warrior, a bright light in the world, a wise woman, and gifted coach in numerous areas. Laura and Shannon met when they were both in DC for a week, earning their Gallup Strengths Coaching Certifications several years ago. Since then, Shannon’s life has been a bit of a roller coaster ride, and the two women dive deeply into what happened, how it happened, and how we all might learn something from Shannon’s story and not have to experience the same things. Shannon began her professional life as a Psychologist, which was great in some ways and destructive in others. Feeling lost and longing for something she couldn’t quite define, she shifted into corporate life, ending up in sales. Each of these roles and experiences fed some things, filled some needs, and cut off others. “My mind, body, and spirit just got sicker and sicker, and yet I continued to ignore the signs,” she explains. “Even after I was diagnosed with several autoimmune diseases, I ignored it and denied it.” Until one day, Shannon was leading a full-day workshop and some of the participants expressed concern as they thought she looked unwell. She denied it, eventually collapsed, and was transported to the Emergency Department in an ambulance! “I wish I’d listened sooner,” she said. “I very nearly died before I was willing to listen…” Laura explains the idea that our bodies, minds, and spirits are always whispering to us, guiding us, expressing needs and concerns… and if we don’t tune in, don’t listen, don’t heed what we are hearing, we will eventually get walloped with the proverbial 2x4 upside the head! What Shannon experienced is not uncommon. Our inner talents and unique gifts long to be expressed in the world, allowing us to add value and be of service. When we don’t find healthy outlets in which to contribute, we shut ourselves down and a destructive cycle begins… which eventually plays out in very real mental, physical, and spiritual illness. Gallup training was the catalytic experience for Shannon; she finally found a place where her passion and talent collided: She could step into her giftedness, serve at a high level, and move forward with greater clarity about her life and work. And then she experienced some very real and significant resistance: Systemic Lupus – attacking her entire body, including her DNA! At 43 years old, she received what is commonly a death sentence, but she was determined to fight. Learning everything she could about how to heal and nurture her body, her being… she re-emerged and began building a thriving coaching practice. Only to be walloped again with a cancer diagnosis – Stage 3! Laura notes that it’s consistent with doing powerful work in the world; the closer we get to expressing that thing we are called to bring forward, the more resistance we experience. Its explained in Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art. The conversation shifts somewhat to more depth into the natural hard-wired strengths both women work to uncover, define, and bring to life in their clients. Shannon expresses the idea that the thing we are criticized the most for, is likely the thing we are meant to share with the world. To hear their deeper insights and encouragement for how you can show up more fully and authentically in your life, listen in and then check out these links: Shannon on Facebook and Instagram @AutoimmuneFoodie Shannon’s Website Online health and wellbeing classes for women The War of Art The Freak Factor Laura’s Strengths Coaching Shannon’s Bio My life has truly been a journey. I am hard-wired for achievement and for many years I worshiped at that alter. I reached every goal I set my sights on attaining, achieving great success in both the clinical and corporate worlds. On the clinical side, I have been a practicing psychologist and career counselor, and I taught psychology at a university. While this was a fulfilling career in many ways, it wasn’t satisfying enough in terms of achievement. So, I jumped into corporate life and for the next 15 years, I held roles in sales, national training, and management for a Global Fortune 500 company. While my inner Achiever was being fed, my inner Empath was suffering. And what no one knew was that I had been suffering with very serious illness for 30 years. You see, by the time I was 44, I had been diagnosed with 7 autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus. I had endured many surgeries, hospitalizations, and procedures, and I had too many doctors and prescriptions to count. My defining characteristic is perseverance: My motto has always been "obstacles fear me." I prided myself on pushing through any adversity. So, I just kept pushing my way through illness after illness, living in fear of anyone finding out that I had a weakness in the form of health issues. What I discovered the hard way is that if you don’t take care of your mind and body and soul, your body will shut you down for maintenance. And by 2014, my body was trying to shut me down permanently. Lupus was attacking my GI tract, my heart and lungs, even my DNA (which is terrifying because you can’t get a DNA transplant). I was completely disabled, I had to retire from corporate life, and I was convinced I would die soon. I was told I needed to start taking chemo and steroids for the rest of life and I needed to accept the relentless progression that lupus was going to make through my body. And do you know what happened next? I said, “To heck with that!” If there was a way out of the inevitable, I was going to find it. So started the next chapter of my life: I spent the next 5 years studying mind-body-spirit wellness and I successfully clawed my life back from the abyss. After 4 years of healing, I was ready to begin a new career. Which is when I was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer. And the rug was once again yanked out from under me. But I accepted the challenge and I am happy to say that as of the end of 2019, I am free of both cancer and autoimmune disease. I don’t even have autoimmune antibodies, which is truly a miracle. And what I treasure today is very different than what I treasured in the past. I am truly grateful for my journey. Facing death has allowed me to truly blossom and release my gifts to the world. During my illness, I obtained several life and health coaching certifications and I am now in my third and final career as a Performance & Wellbeing Coach, the magical career where my strengths and passion collide. My mission is to help people reach greater levels of performance and wellness in their critical work and life roles through improved self-regulation, interdependent communication, and radical heath restoration. My passions include helping people unleash their authenticity, transform suffering into purpose, and achieve true mind-body-spirit wellness so they can release their unique God-given genius into the world. My journey has taught me that having mental, physical, or spiritual illness will prevent you from becoming who you were created to be. I have learned there is something of a blindness in our society to the rich variety of human talents. I meet people every day who believe they have no special abilities or genius talents. Well, I am here to tell you, definitively, that you are unique among all people who have ever lived or ever will live. You have genius talents that are both easy to use and obvious to see if you only know where to look. You are, indeed, a very special snowflake. My passion and purpose is to help people achieve holistic wellness so they are free to pursue their passion and their purpose - because the world craves each of our unique contributions.

Regular listeners of the podcast will know that I’ve been on a journey to discover more about how success comes from taking an inside-out approach, which is why I’m so excited to geek out with today’s guest. My friend Dr. Shannon Irvine helps entrepreneurs train their brains to transform their businesses, and it may take listening to this episode a couple of times to really grasp what she reveals here, but trust me, it’ll be worth it. As you’ll hear, Shannon is the ideal person to have this discussion with. As she earned her PhD, she discovered that our brains are able to change, and that we can actually hardwire new ways of thinking, acting, and being. When she dug into this internal work and combined it with the strategies she had been relying on for years, she was finally able to integrate her life and her business. She now is able to take time away to spend with her kids, increase her impact through my nonprofit, Mosaic Vision, and grow her revenue. The best part is that it’s not that difficult to remove the mental blocks that are holding you back, and in this episode Shannon provides tactical tips and action steps you can start taking today to do this, along with access to her free daily brain priming audio series – that just takes minutes a day! In this episode we cover self-worth, our subconscious, money beliefs and the science behind what makes someone successful, in whatever way you define success. What Shannon shares today shows that it all really comes down to the realization that we are the creators of our thoughts, and we really do have the choice to get where we want to go. Before we start the show, I’ve got something to ask. At this time we have over 500 5-Star ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, which is great, but I’ve set a goal to get 750 of them now by the end of this year, December 31st, 2019. If you’ve gotten value from this podcast, I’d really appreciate you subscribing and leaving an honest rating and review. Take a screenshot, share it on your Instagram Stories and tag me, @rickmulready. When we hit the 750 ratings and reviews, I’ll be raffling off a book bundle of my top 10 business and mindset books for one lucky winner. If you’ve already left a rating and review, just take a screenshot and tag me on Instagram, and you’ll be eligible to win as well! Want to win a 30-minute strategy session with me? I’ll be drawing one winner at random each month, and all you have to do is give me your feedback on this podcast over at http://rickmulready.com/messenger, telling me what you’d like to hear more of - including topics you’d like to see covered, guests, style and frequency of the show! On the Show Today You’ll Learn: The inside-out approach that will get you off the “hustle treadmill” – for good Why we shouldn’t be placing our self-worth in our businesses, and each of our experiences with this How long it takes to reprogram your subconscious (the answer will probably shock you!) What Shannon sees as the single biggest challenge that entrepreneurs face today, and how a simple reframe can make all the difference with it The four steps to take to remove limiting beliefs Fascinating examples how musicians, athletes and entrepreneurs can rewire their brains for maximum performance and success How to use a bridge process, and reverse-engineering, to get from brand new entrepreneur to 7-figure earning, or wherever you want to be
Over the course of this podcast, Shannon and Janine have made some commitments to changing various things in their lives, inspired by insights in various episodes. In this episode, we update you on how (or whether) we've managed to do the things we thought we'd do. Discussion topics include: • A tornado in Portland! • Our (new) commitment to keeping a list of these commitments so we don’t forget about them • Janine’s re-energized knitting and Shannon’s happy t-shirt drawer • How it’s okay to change our minds • How the problem with a bad memory is not actually having a bad memory but rather worrying about having a bad memory • The amazingly good memories both Shannon and Janine enjoyed when we were young • What Shannon does when she can’t remember someone’s name • A workshop Shannon’s planning to offer in Phoenix about embracing good enough in your writing or creative practices • Our plea to let us know you’re a listener if we ever see you in person • Shannon’s strategies for getting back to her morning routine We gave updates on these commitments: • Janine’s knitting, from Episode 65 • Shannon’s t-shirt drawer also, from Episode 65 • Janine’s desire to become more handy, from Episode 60 • Shannon’s desire to stop labeling herself as a person with a bad memory, also from Episode 60 • Both Shannon and Janine’s desire to become better at asking for help, from Episode 17 • How Janine practiced saying no (to Shannon!), from Episode 53 • Shannon’s progress on her genealogy and inherited items, from Episode 20 • Shannon’s struggles with her morning routine, from Episode 11 (among others) Visit the show notes at www.gettingtogoodenough.com for links to the various episodes discussed, as well as a couple of photos!

Maybe you envision being a stay-at-home mom and have no desire to continue in a career after children come to your family---or maybe you want to keep working a full-time job outside the home and the thought of spending all day at home with kids scares you to death. The real problem here is that most of us don’t think there is another option other than one end of the spectrum or the other. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to do both and be successful in both roles? There is good news and a third option, and my guest today is here to talk about it. Shannnon Miles is a master delegator. She and her husband, Bryan, grew a two-person operation into a staff of 60 corporate team members by seeing where they were the strongest, and delegating the rest. They lead with trust and have built a thriving business on the premise that adults are adults and can handle their business. The pair are also visionaries of the virtual workplace. Shannon’s passion, in addition to helping others realize the freedom they receive from delegating, is to bring to light the challenges women face in the workplace. From finding the courage to ask your boss for a flexible schedule to deciding if there’s an option for you outside 100% full-time, on-site office work, and 100% full-time, stay-at-home mom. Shannon has walked the walk and is here to lead other women on their journey to finding their own third option, which happens to be the title of her book, The Third Option. TWEET: Chasing your dreams is not a binary choice - there is a third option that you can feel better about! #chasingdreams @shannonkmiles The hybrid model Don’t we all want a way to “have it all”? Shannon found a hybrid way to have it all, but it didn’t look like she thought it would. She had to readjust her thinking and mindset about what she wanted long-term and figure out how to get there in the short-term. It meant taking a humbling career change and setting aside her ego and pride. She found that there was so much space available as a third option between full-time on-site work and full-time stay-at-home mom. TWEET: Having it all doesn’t look the same for everyone. You can find the “all” that works for you without feeling guilty! #chasingdreams @shannonkmiles Going ALL IN How are you at taking risks? Shannon and her husband both had an overwhelming urge to “do something big,” but they knew it would require a big risk and a big move. They cashed in their 401(k)’s, left their jobs, and started their own business. With two young kids, it was scary and terrifying, but they were so compelled that the drive overtook the fear. Their individual corporate experiences and skillsets helped in launching the new company. Shannon says that you can leverage all your background for the next season and the next journey. They both knew this was something they couldn’t dip their toes in gradually, but would have to go ALL IN. TWEET: Big moves require big risks so it’s important to move past your fear into action! #chasingdreams @shannonkmiles Let’s talk delegation Have you ever thought about delegation in regards to how it helps OTHER people pursue their dreams? It’s hard to let go and have others step in to help, and there is a certain amount of guilt associated with delegation. There are so many myths that we tell ourselves about why delegation is a weakness. It’s simply one of the limiting beliefs that keeps us from pursuing our dreams. TWEET: Our limiting beliefs are the main thing that keeps us from pursuing our dreams. #chasingdreams @shannonkmiles Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser--”Get very comfortable with not having it all figured out.
