In this episode, meet podcast creator, producer, and consultant https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisaorkin/ (Lisa Orkin). She is a great storyteller that uses audio and sound to paint a picture for her audience. Lisa started her own podcast, then working with indie podcasts, and now bigger businesses are into it and advertising has also come into it. Her secret for storytellingLisa says that her secret to better storytelling is to paint pictures instead of words. Rather than narrating how something feels or seems, she describes how it looks -- and that’s how to successfully paint a picture in listeners’ minds. Lisa also loves to expand people’s limits by giving her audiences a nice push out of their comfort zones. Her projectsShe is currently working on Michael Cohen’s podcast for Audio Up. She also has Project Woowoo, which is her own fun podcast. Lisa likes helping people with the creative aspects of their podcasts, especially intros and outros. Since she works with people who have been in that industry, she finds that it is super important to help them decipher what they want to say and find a way to say it in a way that is going to be attention-grabbing. AuthenticityLisa believes that it is important to have authenticity in media; people want to see who you are in all ways and that will keep people interested in you and what you have to say. People want real. And even for hosts who prefer to keep to themselves and just present information, they can still present information in a way that represents them. Find the line where comfortable, authentic, and private lay side to side -- it does take practice but you just got to do it and get out there. Audio vs. Writing For Lisa, the difference when writing for listening is that everything has to be shorter and more precise. Use the dialog to paint a picture but in a way that also is engaging. One of the mistakes people make when they’re writing for audio is that they write something that is meant to be read. Audio sentences must be short, but also be filled with information and move the story enough without much narration or feeling tedious. Her creative journeyLisa had all kinds of jobs before choosing the artistic path of writing. She started writing with her dad, Dick Orkin. She felt like the Radio Ranch was a family business that allowed her to grow, While she wanted to be an actor, she found that her true passion was in writing. What’s AheadLisa hopes to soon make more shows and use the medium to its fullest to tell as many stories as possible. She is ready to set off on her ideas with many great collaborators. In the mid '60s, with Batman big on TV, legendary radio man Dick Orkin brought Chickenman to air. The audio comedy gained a loyal following and still plays on the radio. Now, Orkin's daughter Lisa is re-releasing the series on streaming platforms. Justin and Jacob talk to the Los Angeles creator about the program, its revival, what it was like working with her dad, and lessons for radio she's still using today. RFK airs first on CJRU 1280 AM in Toronto. This episode was produced by Jacob Dubé. You can support the station on Patreon here.
This week, we have the pleasure of talking with Lisa Orkin, the daughter of one of radio's greatest creative minds ever! Plus, she's shared a couple of great radio commercials that her current company produced, as well as a full episode of Chickenman! Plus, we have a winner! Yes, Stephen Bailey correctly guessed all 10 songs in our montage. Congratulations!

You need to honor every part of yourself…even the part that doesn't want to get out of bed. How do you find motivation when it's hard to get out of the bed and not just because the bed is super cozy with luxuriously soft sheets and a down comforter that's just the right weight – you know – not too heavy but light enough to keep you warm? But because life feels heavy and you're constantly in the grind going nowhere fast? That's exactly the question Lisa Orkin and I explore in this week's #goingtherewithjen. It's one thing to be young and have your entire life ahead of you to figure your shit out…but entirely different when you're 57 and living the same old. I'm also guessing Lisa and I aren't alone when we find ourselves running away from success. Why is that? Episode 090. "Don't podcast for results. Podcast because you're making something you believe in and make it about that. Make it about the art of what you're doing. Make it about something you believe that you want to put into the world and don't worry about feedback." ~Lisa Orkin, creator of Project WooWoo I'm calling it: my conversation with Lisa Orkin - voiceover actor, podcast host, writer, speaker (the list goes on and on) - is the best Creative Impostor episode of 2020 so far! I mean, it's got everything! A Back to the Future kind of open in which Lisa and I experiment with mental time travel. Humorous name-dropping. Life advice you can put into practice woven throughout. Tension! Drama! Comedy! (all the elements of selling a compelling story, by the way) Oh, and Lisa tosses in an anecdote about auditioning for work only to have the producers lament that they'd prefer her father (famed voiceover actor Dick Orkin) for the role… if only he weren't dead. Talk about an imposter syndrome pile-on! See. I told you: best episode of 2020 so far. But beyond the comedy (did I mention that Lisa's a veteran improv performer as well?), what stands out to me about this episode is its optimism. Lisa has faith in her ability not only to craft and tell her story (or, in her case, stories), she has faith that someone wants to listen. And, after nurturing many projects simply for her own enjoyment, she truly does believe that, by doing something you love long enough, you'll find your people and they'll find you. If that sentiment sounds too optimistic for you, then you need this show now more than ever. It is, after all, the best show of 2020 so far. P.S. This week, let’s talk about some unschooling vocabulary. There are terms I made up, and terms that our community took on and redefined for ourselves. This episode highlights some of those words. I imagine doing updates of this episode as we continue to develop language together. For now, these ten words offer a good opportunity for us to have shared meaning. It’s also an opportunity to question your own definitions and understandings, and pivot wherever the need arises. UnschoolingSelf-Directed EducationDeschoolingSchoolishnessPervasive WhitenessOthermothering (the brilliant Patricia Hill Collins wrote about this)ReparentingLife DesignIntersectionalityLabrishHere’s a resource for further exploring language in relation to parenting, leadership, and of course, liberation: https://radicalselfie.teachable.com/p/ourpatois This episode was recorded live at She Podcasts. Here’s an excerpt with a few snippets from this page about #Shepodcasts:“She Podcasts began in 2014 as a small Facebook group, built so that our women podcaster friends could have a place online to get quick podcasting answers, tips and resources from one another. However, as soon as the group started, it grew enormously. Friends were adding friends and before long it had been built to over 11,000 women in some phase of building and PRODUCING a podcast. In the spirit of further support, a podcast was created to address issues and podcasting current events as they relate to women. Hosted by Elsie Escobar and Jessica Kupferman, the podcast entitled “She Podcasts” now boasts almost 10000 downloads per month. The vision for She Podcasts is to support and nurture as many female-lead podcasts as possible, and to encourage knowledge sharing without excessive promotion.”Dawn J. Fraser was my absolute favorite workshop facilitator. She was present, brilliant, intuitive, and funny. Here’s her bio, straight from her website:“Dawn J. Fraser is a storyteller, educator and and nationally acclaimed speaker based out of New York City. She is the Host of the live show and upcoming podcast ‘Barbershop Stories’, which features storytellers performing true tales in barbershops and salons. Dawn has created programs for college students, educators and entrepreneurs to develop leadership potential through storytelling, and is an Instructor with The Moth and The Story Studio. She was featured amongst some of the nation’s top innovators and change makers as a speaker at TED@NYC and has performed in shows including The Moth Mainstage, Story Collider, RISK and The Unchained Tour. She loves being a twin, a Trinidadian, and tweetable @dawnjfraser.”Lisa Orkin was also amazingly giving during her workshop. Here’s her website, and here’s a blurb I took directly from her site:I have over 25 years of experience in copywriting, scripting, audio production, voice acting, teaching and speaking in both traditional and digital media. Coming from a voice acting background to starting her first podcast, and how she got to her current podcast, Project Woo Woo. She shares how she copes with all the aspects of podcasting, how much of her life is spent podcasting and how she mixes humor with her wisdom. About the Podcaster: Lisa Orkin is a comedian, the Creative Director at Radio Ranch, a company that creates ads for radio and podcasts. She is the host of Project Woo Woo, where she has real conversations with imaginary people fulfilling her deep desire to look deep into the hearts and minds of the most important spiritual, historical, and intellectual influencers, past and present, dead or alive all played by some of the most brilliant world-class actors, writers, and comedians, in Los Angeles. It is part comedy, part performance art, part serious interview. Unlimited by time and space, Lisa suspends reality to talk with people she has always wanted to. There is not one minute that Lisa does not believe she is talking to the real people, making Lisa’s fantasy world organically funny, wonderfully wacky and strangely enlightening. Lisa is a Ya Ya Podcasting client. Highlights: Why She Started a Podcast The History of all her Podcasts How to Cope with Details The Need to Tell Stories Dealing with Feeling Unsure Parody laws Mentioned in this episode: http://honestlylisa.com/ http://www.projectwoowoo.com/ Feel free to use these hashtags to share your thoughts with me on socials. #podcasterssupportingpodcasters #justpodcasting The technical thing I learned from this episode: Squadcast has some issues, probably because I was on wi-fi and not hard wired like usual. Cats in this episode: Thor. AKA Maydoh. While I was recording the intro, he wanted me turn on the bathroom tap for him. Because why would a cat want to drink from a water bowl? Personal Podcasting Pain Point: This year has been crazy so far, in a good way. New clients, new team members and new opportunities and a growing to-do list. Getting this podcast out remains a challenge. Next season, I'll be doing things differently so I really can drop an entire season in 1 day. I'm learning from this failure and experimenting a bit with other ideas (which I'll share with you soon!).
Lisa's husband of 18 years, had an affair and abandoned their family. Not knowing how to sort out the pieces she jumped into a 10 yr relationship that she knew wasn't meant to be. There's more to her story and she is doing her best to let everyone know - YOU'RE NOT ALONE. Whether it's broken hearts, aging, or single parenting, you're not alone. Lisa is kind and brilliant full of hope and inspiration - enjoy! Lisa Orkin is a comedian and fellow podcaster. Check out her show here www.projectwoowoo.com and follow her on IG @lisaorkingram. This week on Yes But Why Podcast, Amy interviews standup comic, actress and podcaster, Lisa Orkin. Lisa is a voiceover artist as well as an actress in TV and film. She talks about how when she first started performing, she wanted to be a serious actress but people kept telling her she was too funny. When she finally focused her sights on comedic roles, she got an agent and started working more often. Now she uses her ability to make people laugh to create hilarious commercials with her production company, The Radio Ranch. In this episode, Lisa shares stories about terrible auditions, rude yoga teachers and (almost) making out with Peter O’Toole. Lisa has great stories and even better advice for any performer out there looking to go into acting, voiceover, or podcasting! If you are a podcaster local to Austin, you can meet Lisa at the Outlier Podcast Festival where she will speaking! You can also hear Lisa weekly on her own podcast, Project Woo Woo, an unscripted interview show in which Lisa gets her actor and comedian friends to pretend to be famous spiritual leaders, philosophers and other important historical figures.
