Get ready to rock and roll with the latest episode of Uncorked! Holli and Jeanna are joined by Helen Grace MacGregor, who is on a mission to bring people back home to their authentic selves. And guess what? She's owning her ADHD diagnosis like a true rockstar! Helen's journey has been one wild ride. With her tattoo that says "unfold your magic" in a spiral, she's come full circle in her life. From being a sparkly, intuitive child who felt the world's pain too deeply to going through what she calls the "wilderness years," she's now back to herself. She's done it all, tried different careers, and even studied Shiatsu (a Japanese form of healing) before committing to her true calling, writing. She lives and breathes words, and writing is her core. But here's the kicker: Helen discovered she had ADHD at 52, and it was a revelation. She didn't fit the classic picture of a loony boy running around, but when she learned more about ADHD and how it matched her brain, she rocked it! Now she helps people get out of their heads and into their bodies, finding calm and settling their nervous systems. She knows that true inner knowing comes from being connected heart and head, fully embodying yourself. Speaking of embodiment, Helen dives deep into why it's so important to be in your body. When you're not embodied, you're leaving behind 95% of your lifeforce and leaking power, which leads to burnout. So, how do you get back in your body? Follow what lights you up! Dance around, find your joy, and let it guide you back to your true self. In her upcoming book, "The Mid-Life Awakening," Helen shares her wisdom and experiences.  Get ready to be inspired, entertained, and uplifted as Holli, Jeanna, and Helen Grace MacGregor take you on an epic adventure of self-discovery, healing, and unleashing your inner magic. It's time to uncork your true potential and rock your authentic self! More about Helen Grace MacGregor: Helen Grace MacGregor is an endlessly curious lightworker by stealth! As an intuitive wordsmith, soul guide, facilitator, Qoya teacher and women's empowerment educator, she gently ripples out love through her words and work. Helen is the creator of The Magical Process and is passionate about gently empowering midlife women to express their innate creativity and embrace their unique magic. She does this through her books, podcast, introvert-friendly group gatherings and programmes offering seasonal, soulful embodiment and energy practices. Helen has spent almost two decades empowering women. Prior to that, she was an NHS health professional, which is where she learned the hard way how important it is to balance your head, heart AND soul. Her drive to understand what makes humans tick led her to train with some of the best embodiment and energy teachers in the western world, such as Rochelle Schiek, Sonia Choquette, Barefoot Doctor, Bruce Frantzis, Helen Noakes, Judith Hanson Lasater and Saul Goodman. After life threw her a shocking turning point in 2019, Helen recently followed her heart by relocating to West Sussex, UK, where she has found herself living somewhere that takes her breath away! She can often be found walking, cycling, singing, teaching, dancing, doing yoga, drinking coffee and writing. Sometimes she has to pinch herself because this is the life she once dreamed of... Helen believes that if we all learn to live in a way that lights up our soul, together we will create a brighter world. Charlotte Bell has been practicing yoga since 1982, and began teaching in 1986. She has established and taught regular classes along Utah's Wasatch Front, and in California and Hawaii. She also teaches workshops, teacher trainings, and yoga for cancer patients and their families at Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City. She has taught at national yoga conferences and international yoga teacher trainings and on women's river trips on the Green and Colorado rivers. Certified by B.K.S. Iyengar in 1989, she enjoys learning from teachers of many different yogic perspectives. Charlotte's asana teaching has been most influenced by her two guiding teachers, Donna Farhi and Judith Hanson Lasater. She received her 500-hour certification from Yoga Alliance in 2000, and is currently registered at the organization's highest level, E-RYT-500. Vipassana meditation practice has had the most profound influence on Charlotte's work. She began her practice in 1986, and has attended many 10-and 30-day meditation retreats since then. Her practice has been guided by her spiritual mentors, Pujari and Abhilasha Keays of the Last Resort in Cedar Breaks, Utah, since 1985. In recent years, she has made an annual trip to Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California, to sit an 18-day combined metta (kindness) and insight meditation retreat. Charlotte teaches mindfulness classes online, and at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and Red Butte Garden. All these influences combine to form an evolving style of yoga that acknowledges the alignment principles of the Iyengar system while applying mindful attention to gain insight into the truth of each individual's asana practice rather than striving for preconceived goals. She encourages students to explore and trust their own experience in their asana practice, and enjoys learning new perspectives from her students. In addition to teaching yoga and meditation, Charlotte writes feature stories for several publications, including Catalyst Magazine, Yoga U Online and the Hugger Mugger Yoga blog. Her articles have appeared in Yoga Journal and Yoga International. She has written feature articles for the Telluride Bluegrass Festival's program since the early 1990s, and has participated in research and writing for a book about the festival's history. In 2007 Rodmell Press (now a part of Shambhala Publications) published her first book, Mindful Yoga, Mindful Life: A Guide for Everyday Practice. The book blends the principles of mindfulness with the practice of Patanjali's Eight Limbs of Yoga. Her second book, Yoga for Meditators, was published by Rodmell Press in 2012 and was one of 10 books recommended in Yoga Journal magazine's “Yoga Books of 2012” list. Her most recent book, Hip-Healthy Asana: A Yoga Practitioner's Guide to Protecting the Hips and Avoiding SI Joint Pain, was published in 2018 by Shambhala Publications. Charlotte plays oboe and English horn in the Salt Lake Symphony; the woodwind quintet, Scherzando Winds; the chamber folk ensemble, blue haiku; and with blue haiku, Kate MacLeod and Hal Cannon in the folk sextet, Red Rock Rondo. Red Rock Rondo's 2009 DVD has won two Emmy awards and an award from the National Educational Television Association.

Judith Hanson Lasater is an American yoga teacher and writer who is recognized as one of the leading yoga teachers in the country and throughout the world. Judith's resume is nothing short of impressive: Not only has she been teaching yoga for more than 50 years, but she helped found The California Yoga Teachers Association, the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco, and the Yoga Journal magazine, which is now in its 46th year of print. She's written 11 books, has taught all over the globe and raised three children. Talk about a super woman!Judith taught was also one of the three teachers to hold the first retreat at the Feathered Pipe Ranch in 1975, a three-week yoga program, for 28 people, all inclusive for $250. And she's returned nearly every year since, and now every summer, one week herself and one week with her daughter Lizzie Lasater, an internationally-known Restorative yoga teacher who learned from her mom.In this conversation, we talk about the right-hand turn that changed her life, her personal understanding of the word ‘spiritual,' how the body is a storehouse for wisdom, and her favorite memory from the Feathered Pipe Ranch over the years. Judith has been brave enough to allow her intuition to carry her through life, an act that takes vulnerability, which she defines as being fully porous and present to the moment. She walks us through several micro exercises to explain topics of perspective, the neurological relationships between the tongue and the brain, and the practice of disidentifying with our thoughts. There is so much quotable wisdom in this conversation:“Perspective doesn't affect your life—it is your life.”"The present moment is the only truth we know.”“We think life is strong and love is fragile, but really it's the other way around. Life hangs by a thread and love holds the universe together.”JudithHansonLasater.comSupport the show (https://featheredpipe.com/gratitude/)

Judith Hanson Lasater is back on the show today for the 3rd time. We chat about her 2 very significant milestones. Her newest book, “Teaching Yoga with Intention - The Essential Guide to Skillful Hands-On Assists and Verbal Communication”. She also completed 50 years of teaching yoga this July & I ask her what it's like to teach for half a century. Her evolution through this journey. Teaching yoga with intention is a book that is for both - the yoga teacher and the yoga student. Judith addresses the importance of communication for yoga teachers. Especially communicating using the system of non-violent communication. (I had previously interviewed her about this. Listen to episode 31) & the importance of mutuality & empathy in communication. Her book also highlights adjustments, power dynamics, difficult conversations & hands-on adjustments. My favorite part of the book is the final section about how to become an educated student. This is a key part of the conversation that's missing in mainstream yoga. We can all use reminders of how to be a better yoga student! Judith also shares a special 30% off coupon code for her new book in this episode. Yes! We made it to 100! This podcast has been a labor of love for the last 3 years. I've had the immense pleasure to chat with some of the most accomplished yoga teachers, wellness experts, and spiritual teachers in the west so they can share their work and best-kept secrets with you. Some were genuinely excited to come on, others I had to slightly harass and I've reached out to many more who never even made it on. I want to take a moment to say thank you to all our guests so far, for giving freely their time, sharing their expertise, and being so open and generous with the process… For today's episode, we are celebrating, by first, doing a recap of the episodes that were the most listened to in the last 3 years. We'll also go over the episode that you guys voted for to enter our celebration giveaway and I want to underline a couple of episodes that I think were underrated but that were special to me and that should have made it to the top of the chart in my opinion.100TH EPISODE GIVEAWAYIf you voted for your favorite episode, thank you so much! Our randomly selected winner for our 100th episode giveaway is Flo Dupuy from the US. Communication is central to our life. As yoga teachers, we communicate constantly through our words, actions & bodies. Yoga philosophy often shows us how to communicate compassionately. But in today's world of social media & cancel culture it can be very challenging. There's a gap between silent & spoken communication. The 'tone' of how we communicate seems to be getting increasingly hostile online & the yoga world isn't immune to this. On the show today, I chat with repeat guest, Judith Hanson Lasater about all things non-violent communication. With 50 years of teaching experience, Judith needs no introduction to people in the yoga world. I had the pleasure of chatting with her about her book, "What we say matters, practicing non-violent communication" co-authored with her husband, Ike Lasater. On this episode, mother-daughter duo, Judith Hanson Lasater and Lizzie Lasater, share more about their yoga journey, parenting, and running a yoga business.    Judith, Ph.d. and physical therapist, is a well known figure in the yoga world, and one of the leading yoga teachers in the US. She has been teaching yoga for 50 years, helped found a nationally-known yoga teacher training program in San Francisco, CA, which has trained thousands of teachers since 1975, and collaborated with other yoga teachers to start the Yoga Journal magazine. Judith has authored 10 books, including her latest: Yoga Myths -  What You Need to Learn and Unlearn for a Safe and Healthy Yoga Practice, and specializes in restorative yoga.    Judith has three children, and one of them is Lizzie Lasater, who is a mother of twins, and also a yoga teacher in her own right. Lizzie learned yoga from her mother, and now teaches restorative yoga teacher training globally via her virtual platform. In addition to sharing her work through live online events, curated digital trainings and her Sunday Savasana Series newsletter, Lizzie also has a heartfelt spirit jewelry collection. Together, Judith and Lizzie share a variety of courses such as Living Your Yoga, Yoga Myths, Savasana Intensive and more on their combined online platform - lasater.yoga.   In this interview, Lizzie shares her insights about what it was like growing up with a yoga teacher for a Mom, and how that has influenced her in journey of teaching yoga and running a yoga business. Judith and Lizzie discuss “being enlightened”, how yoga translates into their daily lives, and holding boundaries. They also talk about their own personal experiences with parenting, and why we all struggle with the idea of perfectionism and not being able to be “perfect parents”.   This is an incredible interview about how yoga relates to parenting, perfectionism and your own practice - from the unique perspective of a mother-daughter team.   Key Takeaways: [10:29] Shannon introduces her guests for this episode - Judith Hanson Lasater and Lizzie Lasater. If you've practiced yoga for awhile, it's likely that you've heard a sweeping generalization about alignment in a pose. Often these generalizations get passed around until they become cemented as absolute truths -- when in fact, they're really just true under certain conditions at certain times. Or they're simply myths. My guest today is Judith Hanson Lasater, who addresses all of this in her newest book, "Yoga Myths: What You Need to Learn and Unlearn for a Safe and Healthy Yoga Practice."Here are a few highlights from our conversation:* We talk about how she is handling shelter-in-place and how it's affected her teaching* Her thoughts on “right and wrong” in yoga and how she frames that conversation instead* 3 common cues you might hear in yoga class that she says are based on myths about the body* When it’s appropriate to question something that you’ve learned from your yoga teacher* Why she says the pelvis is everything!Show notes: yogalandpodcast.com/episode206 Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/yogaland. For this episode, I sat down with Judith Hanson Lasater. Judith has a Ph.D in East-West psychology, she’s a trained, Physical Therapist and has been teaching yoga since 1971. She trains students and teachers throughout the United States as well as abroad. She is the co-founder of Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco and a founder of the Yoga Journal magazine and is president of the California Yoga Teachers Association. She has written eight books, including her most recent one called: Restore and Rebalance: Yoga for Deep Relaxation.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKE-AWAY FROM THIS EPISODE:1- Restorative yoga is remembering to be still every day. When we are still, silence arises. When silence arises, fear melts away. When fear melts away, there's space for spontaneous gratitude, joy, compassion and empathy. From there's an integration of our being.2- You can't force yourself to relax, but you can carve out 20 minutes a day to do nothing. Doing nothing is the best thing you can do for yourself. It's a radical thing. No music, no talking, no recording. Do it in a place you feel safe and it's quiet. 3- It will start to notice that your mind is a drunken monkey. Pay attention to the sensations of breaths and you'll create radical presence. Becoming aware of sensation is a practice of body-fulness on top of mind-fulness. 4- The body is always trying to reach out homeostasis. Stress is the most important disruptor of that state of homeostasis. Worrying is praying for what you don't want. so let's focus on what you don't want.Physiologically, it takes at least 15 min to relax, if you are well rested.5- The light is the most stimulating thing to the nervous system.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE :Can you define what is restorative yoga and explain what is special about it or different than other styles of yoga?Do you think it's a more meditative practice compare to other asana practices? What are the benefits, or positive effects of this practice? How do you take the weight of stress off the body? What are the stages of Savasana?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!DONATE OR BECOME AN EXCLUSIVE MEMBER TODAY.Thank you so much for listening and being part of our 58th episode! “The prayer of our souls is a petition for persistence; not for the one good deed, or single thought, but deed on deed, and thought on thought, until day calling unto day shall make a life worth living.” - W.E.B. DuBois W.E.B. DuBois was an American sociologist, historian, author, editor, and activist who was an important black protest leader in the United States during the first half of the 20th century, and a co-founder of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). The fight for Social Justice continues, requiring community uprising, institutional and personal transformation. Persistent practice is required to accomplish our objectives in all of our work, from personal physical, creative, and spiritual practices to the work of social and political change. That persistence requires commitment, determination, and discipline. Within yogic literature, verse 1:12 of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra describes the discipline of the mind thus: “Cessation of the turnings of thought comes through practice and dispassion.” In our personal practices, such as yoga and dancing, taking responsibility for our well-being and finding the right shapes and movements for our own bodies on this particular day is critical to our persistence. I recommend listening to your body's needs and utilizing supports such as a chair, a wall, props like yoga blocks, blankets, straps, and bolsters to adapt the stances and movements. This sort of self-awareness and self-care helps us persist with our yoga practice by assisting us to find the version of a pose that works best in this moment, and learning to modify each movement according to our evolving needs. Choosing our projects, practices, and causes based on our values and Purpose or dharma also supports our persistence. In her book, Living Your Yoga: Finding the Spiritual in Everyday Life, Judith Hanson Lasater suggests the following practice for developing discipline: “Make a list of things you have always wanted to do, but never seem to find the time to try, or things that you already do but have resistance to doing. You might choose meditating, writing a book, playing the piano, practicing poses or breathing techniques, reading a good book, or taking a daily walk. It could be something else. What is important is that you pick something and commit yourself to doing it for fifteen minutes a day...To support your commitment, set a timer. It is important to continue for the full fifteen minutes. It is also important to stop after fifteen minutes, so that you do not become obsessive about the activity. Some days you will want to do this exercise; other days, it may be difficult. In either case, do it anyway, acknowledging that it is something you have chosen...Carry on for one month, and then review your experience. At that time, you may want to continue the activity, change it, or drop it altogether. In any case, you will have had the opportunity to experience consistency and commitment without rigidity.” I myself have seen transformation in my life from adopting habits aligned with my goals for as little as 5 minutes daily! Ugh, how very vulnerable I feel sharing my shit sometimes. It'd be easier if I just shared lists with y'all like, "5 ways to practice meditation!" or "3 different pranayama (breath) practices to help ease anxiety!" But there's lots of that out there. What I hope to offer is raw and real. It's the bull shit mind battles that we all go through whether we acknowledge 'em, are aware of 'em, or speak about 'em- most of the time, we call all relate. As long as we 're wiling to carve away the layers that conceal our humanness. The book Living Your Yoga by Judith Hanson Lasater is absolute GOLD and I recommend it with my whole heart. It's a more elegant, more wise version of this podcast... it's understanding how to practice in the very messiness of your REAL ASS LIFE.

Why is there so much resistance to changing and adapting practice to aging, and what teachers can do to help their students overcome that resistance? Once we do acknowledge that change needs to happen, where do we start? What happens when you age? What can potentially go wrong, and what do we need to do in yoga to address or ideally prevent problems? How can we adapt yoga without making it into a geriatric, boring practice? How can an understanding of the ashramas (the traditional yogic stages of life) help us to reorient and adapt our practice and our teaching? Sexual misconduct in the yoga community isn't new. But the evolving #metoo and #timesup movements have brought to light the magnitude of the problem for women from all walks of life -- including within the yoga world. (Rachel Brathen collected more than 300 of them last year). It's opened an important dialogue about how to put an end to sexual misconduct and other abuses of power within the yoga community. There are a few thoughtful yoga teachers leading the way, and I talked with two of them in this week's episode: Judith Hanson Lasater and Mary Taylor. Judith and Mary, with AZIAM founder Alanna Zabel, shared their stories recently with Yoga Journal. Now, they're talking with me about what they feel should be the next steps for healing. We talk about:* The history of ethical standards for yoga teachers and how both Judith and Mary believe these standards should evolve in the future* How the vocation of yoga teacher has changed through the years as yoga has become more commercial* Why it's important for teachers to create an environment where students feel safe and empowered to say "no" * Judith's tip for how to listen to your body to discern if something is wrong* Practical steps yoga teachers can take to further the discussion, support students who have been victimized to share their stories, and create awareness aboutt sexual abuse in the yoga community* Mary's perspective on what's happening in the Ashtanga community on the heels of abuse allegations against founder Pattabhi Jois Show notes: http://jasonyoga.com/podcast/episode93/ SHOUTOUT TO OUR SPONSORS1.
