History is filled with women who've made enormous contributions to science. Alice Augusta Ball, a chemist, found a cure for leprosy. The first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry, Marie Maynard Daly, discovered a connection between heart health and cholesterol back in 1955. Recently, viral immunologist Kizzmekia S. Corbett led a medical research team to develop the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The impact women have made on science is life changing, but women are still underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workforce. Listen back to a conversation MPR News host Angela Davis had with two Minnesota scientists, Bridgette Shannon and Jayshree Seth. They talked about what it's like to be a woman in the science field — overcoming barriers and finding success in their research and individual careers.  Both Shannon and Seth are scientists at 3M, a multinational conglomerate company headquartered in Minnesota. But outside their daily tasks, they both work to help motivate the next generation of scientists.  Shannon is the president of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers and works to diverse the STEM workforce through K-12 education. Seth is the author of two books, “The Heart of Science – Engineering Footprints, Fingerprints, & Imprints,” and “The Heart of Science: Engineering Fine Print.” Both books are published by the Society of Women Engineers, and sales benefit a scholarship for underrepresented minority women in STEM. Seth was also a speaker for Tedx Talks at St. Olaf College, where she spoke about her journey to becoming an advocate for diversity in STEM fields. Guests:  Bridgette Shannon is a chemist and a business development manager in 3M's Transportation and Electronics Business Group. She was the first African American woman to complete and earn a Ph.D. from the department of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Arkansas. Bridgette is the president of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers.  Jayshree Seth is a corporate scientist at 3M and the company's first chief science advocate. She joined 3M in 1993 and holds 80 patents for a variety of innovations. In 2020 she was awarded the highest Achievement Award by the Society of Women Engineers. She is the fourth woman — and first woman engineer — to be inducted into the Carlton Society – 3M's science and innovation “hall of fame.” Jayshree serves on the Board of the Science Museum of Minnesota. Both Shannon and Janine drive a Nissan LEAF, the SL Plus trim. It's a 100 percent electric vehicle (EV) and we think it's 100 percent awesome. It's not a coincidence that we drive the same car: Janine bought one after Shannon raved about hers (and answered all her questions). We love our EVs and we want to help you open your mind to considering one! We talk all about it in this week's episode. Discussion topics include: • Our love for our Nissan LEAFs • How Janine letting buying her electric car (very) easy • How the price of gas is making buying an EV even more attractive • The options for charging in Janine's garage • How (relatively) hassle-free charging in public chargers has been for Janine • Shannon's charging strategy since she doesn't have a charger at her home • How surprisingly cheap it is to charge our electric cars • Shannon's terrific neighbor who offered up her charger • Shannon's future plans for charging her car at home • Tax incentives for electric cars and plug-in hybrids • Some of the trickier (and fun) aspects of driving an EV • Our opinion that buying an electric car is not as hard as people seem to think • Our offer to help any of our listeners who want help or advice on buying an electric car Check out the show notes at www.gettingtogoodenough.com

Mount Elbert is the second highest peak in the contiguous United States, rising to 14,440 feet above sea level. On September 15, Shannon vonDriska will be part of a Challenge America team of four severely injured Veterans climbing the mountain. Their mission is to inspire Veterans and others struggling to overcome their physical and psychological scars. Shannon had hoped to become an Army medic. However, on a nighttime march she fell and immediately knew something serious was wrong. She continued because she wanted to graduate with her team, finishing the last 10 miles on a broken leg.   Multiple surgeries would lead to Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome, a debilitating neurological disease.  Very little is known about CRPS so proper diagnosis and effective standardized treatment is difficult to find.  “One day I got sick and I never got better.” Shannon is very thankful for the Challenge America programs that have not only helped with her physical pain but also the psychological scars of Military Sexual Trauma. Shannon is one of the estimated 1 in 3 women and 1 in 50 men who have experienced MST. Challenge American's Military Sisterhood Initiative has helped Shannon deal with those scars and also move toward healing by helping others. She says getting over the anger and resentment has been an added challenge to the physical pain. Other members of the Mount Elbert challenge include Assaf Dory (amputee and CRPS sufferer), Dash Wong (Navy SEAL with only one lung) and Steve Fotion (Army Reservist). Both Shannon and Assaf will be making the 10 mile climb on crutches. The team is raising funds for Challenge America programs and pledges may be made here. TAKEAWAY: “If you love someone with PTSD just try to be patient. I know it's hard but it is also very hard for the person suffering. Please be patient.”

Welcome to episode 2 of the Grab ‘em by the poesy podcast, ‘Are we bored of mental health?' with your host Kate Murnane, in collab with the Oxford Feminist society. Today I'm joined by two equally wonderful inspirational women of Oxford, who work on different aspects of mental health. Iheoma Green is a wellbeing practitioner working within the NHS, specialising in childhood and adolescent anxiety. Shannon Maloney is a DPhil student in Teddy Hall who's work (based in the department of Psychiatry) focuses on mindfulness based programmes. This extended episode was an absolute joy to record and is full to the brim of insight, laughter and hope . Both Shannon and Iheoma's passion for people, how our minds work and how we can help when things get dark, is inspiring. Topics we cover include: imposter syndrome, representation of women within psychiatry, mental health vs mental illness, the harm of genderizing mental health illness and suicide, over-saturation and misinformation by the ‘mental health' trend on social media, capitalist exploitation of ‘self care' by patriarchal companies and why this risks oppressing women further. In this episode we have a teensy wifi blip toward the end (FU virgin media!!) and the sound quality on one of our mics is slightly shaky in moments, but bear with us because this nourishing episode is 100% worth it!! Sending you all the love. We hope that this podcast will give you a chance to fill your cup because YOU are worth it xx Trigger Warnings: mental Illness and suicide. Several months back I'm browsing my Instagram feed, I'm scrolling through all the amazing pictures when something catches my eye. I stop on DRock holding a few collectors cards. Pokémon cards to be exact. I start thinking we have a few of these cards in the house. So I comment on his picture and tell him about our cards. As he does he replies back saying message me. So I do. He asks if we have had them graded. Both Shannon and I aren't sure where to start for this. We message back and forth send him a few pictures of what we have to which he says well they could be worth from a few hundred to thousands depending on how the grading goes. As y'all know Shannon and I have been wanting to buy a house. We have actually several plans on how we are going to achieve this goal. Some of them we have shared on here. We have had a lot of skepticism from a lot of people both publicly and privately. That is the nature of life when you share your life with the general public. It seems haters and trolls are always out there to watch you fail and make sure they tell as many people as they can even though their opinion isn't worth anything. If y'all didn't know, these amazing cards to the right collector are quite lucrative. Especially when Youtubers like Logan Paul get involved in this awesome trading card world. If you didn't know Logan Paul, according to his YouTube channel he got a text from Gary Vee asking him about if he has seen this sports cards thing. He replied of course I have. But he doesn't know anything about sports cards. But he did collect Pokémon cards. Gary vee in a nutshell tells him this is the new art ironically Pokémon is at the top so get educated on Pokémon! Fast Forward to now. Devin has spent countless hours sorting our Pokemon cards in to years and sets… then sets by numbers. Then, spending time putting them in the correct order into the selves of the card holders so non of them get ruined, lost or trashed in anyway. Trying to hold the value and keep them looking nice. This was by far no easy task and a lot of the time he has to take out cards to replace ones that went in the missed spot… meaning all cards had to be moved down by 1 or 2 spaces. Again, very time consuming. If you knew how many cards we had, you'd understand. Are you into collecting cards? Action figures or Legos? maybe Hotwheels…. let us know. Was it something you had as a child and still do? We'd love to know! Discussion topics include: • A tornado in Portland! • Our (new) commitment to keeping a list of these commitments so we don’t forget about them • Janine’s re-energized knitting and Shannon’s happy t-shirt drawer • How it’s okay to change our minds • How the problem with a bad memory is not actually having a bad memory but rather worrying about having a bad memory • The amazingly good memories both Shannon and Janine enjoyed when we were young • What Shannon does when she can’t remember someone’s name • A workshop Shannon’s planning to offer in Phoenix about embracing good enough in your writing or creative practices • Our plea to let us know you’re a listener if we ever see you in person • Shannon’s strategies for getting back to her morning routine We gave updates on these commitments: • Janine’s knitting, from Episode 65 • Shannon’s t-shirt drawer also, from Episode 65 • Janine’s desire to become more handy, from Episode 60 • Shannon’s desire to stop labeling herself as a person with a bad memory, also from Episode 60 • Both Shannon and Janine’s desire to become better at asking for help, from Episode 17 • How Janine practiced saying no (to Shannon!), from Episode 53 • Shannon’s progress on her genealogy and inherited items, from Episode 20 • Shannon’s struggles with her morning routine, from Episode 11 (among others) Visit the show notes at www.gettingtogoodenough.com for links to the various episodes discussed, as well as a couple of photos!

Welcome to Episode 11, where we cover Chapters 30-32 of The Raven Boys! Both Shannon and Nievita bring the salt this episode! We get into some mild dragging of Dick Gansey the Second, Neeve continues to be a terrible human, we reject the canon of Noah's shoes, Shannon holds the line as Blue Sargent Defense Squad, and Nievita is just the worst at pronouncing names and doing accents. You'd think by now she'd learn! Note: Shannon only almost caused the car to crash because Nievita put her ice cold hands on Shannon's face while pretending she was Noah, then laughed so hard she couldn't see to drive. It was justified on Shannon's part. They discuss how they prepared, who they met, what they learned, and a preview of who they interviewed for their next episode. Stay tuned! CUE, formerly, Computer-Using Educators, is a nonprofit educational corporation founded in 1978. CUE's goal is to inspire innovative learners in all disciplines from preschool through college. With an active current membership of thousands of educational professionals, CUE supports many regional affiliates and Learning Networks. CUE Conferences are California’s premier educational technology events. CUE is the largest organization of its type in the west and one of the largest in the United States. We were able to interview Dave Lee (@AODaveLee), one of the co-hosts of “The Waves of Tech” Podcast, on the vendor floor at CUE. Their podcast covers all different kinds of technology and how it relates to you. Both Shannon and Brenda were also interviewed for the Waves of Tech podcast. Dave and his co-host Steve are also the Founders of International Podcast Day (@intlpodcastday), which celebrates podcasting around the world. Brenda and Shannon are big fans! Both Brenda and Shannon really enjoyed the “Tosas Talking Tech” podcast and their pre-conference helpful hints in their “Spring CUE 18 Preview”, Episode 68. Tosas Talking Tech is a podcast that is hosted by two teachers, that talk about technology in the classroom.  Shannon was also interviewed on for their podcast. P.S. Their secret word is “Snickers”. Also helpful was the CUE sponsored podcast “Check This Out” podcast, especially their “What to Expect when you’re expecting to attend a conference”, episodes 76 and 78. Brian Briggs @bribriggs and Ryan O’Donnell @creativeedtech are great fun to listen to. Now that we have CUE under our belt, we are looking forward to attending ISTE in June 2018!  Will you be there? Will you come and talk to us? Let us know! We would LOVE to have a meet-up in Chicago! Shannon Jones, a young farmer from River Hebert, Nova Scotia joins me to talk about what it is like to be a young farmer on her farm, Broadfork Farm. She started the farm with her partner Bryan Dyck in 2011. Both Shannon and Bryan farmed on other farms for many years before they started their own farm. The lived simply and knew what they could get by without. That made the transition to farming a lot easier. Their path of frugality is one path into farming. But like Shannon said, find what works for you and don't just copy what someone else did. At the end of the day it is very clear that Shannon loves what she does. I was born and raised in Oklahoma. It was almost required that at some point I listen to country music which I did. More specifically, my family loved the sounds of honky-tonk. I grew up with my mom blaring Merle Haggard, Hank Williams (Sr. & Jr.), Lefty Frizell and George Jones on the car radio. Much the same way I blare Lady Gaga and 2 Chains now. I digress... Let's just say I have a deep fondness and appreciation for honky-tonk music. And if you've ever listened to my podcast then you know I love funny moms. Thankfully, Stacie Burrows and Shannon Noel make up the musical comedy duo, Mommy Tonk, combing honky-tonk with funny shit for moms! I feel like I struck gold! Their songs are brutally honest, knee-slapping funny, and gut-busting graphic. Need more adjectives? Just listen to their stuff already! They explain how they were brought together by Lindsay Kavet during an Expressing Motherhood show and instantly bonded.   Soon after meeting they created MT and now they tour the US singing songs with titles like, "Get off your ass, you f**king a**hole", "The PTA Fundraiser" and "I'm Just Sayin". Yee-haw!  Seriously, you have to listen to this episode to grasp the full brilliance of their songs. They played a couple of songs on the show. Now you can play them on repeat if you've got a hankerin'. Both Shannon and Stacie have backgrounds in standup, improv and sketch, making this the perfect outlet for their comedic voice. And I dare say it's not just for women. My husband even says he found himself humming along to their songs when he was on quality control duty. He's also hinted more than once that he would like my Mommy Tonk t-shirt. (It is a pretty sweet ass shirt). Mommy Tonk has a couple of songs on iTunes, but I would encourage you to see them live if possible. And lucky for you they're currently on tour with The Assless Chaps.  Check out their tour dates below or on their website to find out when to go. You can also saddle up and follow them on Twitter @MommyTonk, or Facebook and Instagram.  Now I'm gonna mosey off to bed with the gentle sounds of nostalgia tickling my funny bone.
