Billie Anne is back—and she's not holding back. In this fiery episode of The CrossYaas Podcast, she's joined by Sarah (beaming in from Scotland) for a raw, no-BS conversation about the global rise in anti-trans hate, political scapegoating, and the terrifying echoes of history we're living through. Together, they name names, spill truths, and share what it means to survive—and thrive—as trans women in a world that wants to erase them. It's angry. It's honest. It's radical. It's necessary. We dive into trans joy, rebellion as authenticity, and the power of showing up for each other.

Welcome to Series 2 of Discourse: The Grabbing Back Podcast! We are so excited to be starting this season with such a fantastic episode with guests Julia Serano and Talia Mae Bettcher. We discuss, amongst many ideas, the perceptions and readings of our bodies, the cultural specificity of boundaries and how they tend to affect women more than men and how femininity is considered quote-unquote artificial in a similar way to transness, and how dangerous that can be. Trigger warnings: transphobia and sexual assault. Talia is an expert on feminist philosophy, transgender studies and philosphy of personhood. She's a professor at California State University and her upcoming book is Intimacy and Illusion: An Essay in Trans Philosophy. Julia is a writer, performer, activist, musician and biologist, she is best known for her book Whipping Girl and her upcoming book is titled Sexed Up: How Society Sexualises us and how we can Fight Back. Texts mentioned and discussed: Full‐Frontal Morality: The Naked Truth about Gender by Talia Mae Bettcher (2012) Playfulness, World-Travelling and Loving Perception by Maria Lugones (1987) What Does it Cost to Tell the Truth by Riki Anne Wilchins (1997) Homogenizing Versus Holistic Views of Gender and Sexuality by Julia Serano - Chapter 13 of Excluded (2013) The Difference Sameness Makes: Objectification, Sex Work, and Queerness by Ann J. Today I interview Julia Serano about her new book, Sexed Up: How Society Sexualizes Us and How We Can Fight Back (Seal, 2022). Serano is an activist, performer, and acclaimed author of Whipping Girl, Excluded, and other books. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, the Guardian, TIME, Salon, and Ms. In Sexed Up, Serano argues that sexualization is a far more pervasive problem that we might recognize. She explores such questions as: Why do we perceive men as sexual predators and women as sexual objects? Why are LGBTQ+ people stereotyped as being sexually indiscriminate and deceptive? Why are people of color still being hyper-sexualized? Serano offers not only a clear-eyed understanding of how sexualization occurs and the harms it creates, but she also offers ways of leading us out of these dynamics toward a more kind, humane, and sex-positive future. Eric LeMay is on the creative writing faculty at Ohio University. He is the author of five books, most recently Remember Me. He can be reached at eric@ericlemay.org. Learn more about your ad choices. Elle continues the series asking the question, "Am I transgender?", an inquiry that comes to the forefront of trans people's mind at some point in their lives or another (or repeatedly). In this iteration of the series, Elle talks about looking at herself in the mirror, disassociation from thoughts and feelings, grieving the childhood and young adulthood I wish I'd had, my willingness to suffer, and so-called gender euphoria. . Carmen talks with renowned author Julia Serano about her 2007 book Whipping Girl that defined trans feminism, and how those concepts hold up today- and maybe even need to be reintroduced to younger generations of queer and trans people. They also discuss her 2019 book Sexed Up and how some of those concepts may explain the current wave of gay and trans people being labeled as "groomers" by the rising Christo-facist movement in the US. Topics include: Trans misogyny and effemimania in the current day, the pros and cons of the greater trans umbrella, the rebirth of the word "Transsexual" and why specific language is important. Elle dips her toes into the conversation about Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists (TERFs) and JK Rowling and her new podcast, The Witch Trials of JK Rowling. She reflects on her internal impulses to condemn and empathize with folks like Rowling -- as well as the strangely validating experience of not being seen, trusted, or heard. Elle refers to Julia Serano's famous Trans Woman Manifesto from her book Whipping Girl as well as the 2022 novel Lessons In Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. She also references the concept of cancel culture, as well as some of the brands that LGBTQ people reject like Chick-fil-A. Welcome to our LGBT podcast This Queer Book Saved My Life! In this episode, we talk with lighting designer, radio host, and teacher Rachael Cady (she/her) about the book that saved her life: Whipping Girl by Julia Serano. It's a collection of personal essays that debunk many of the myths and misconceptions that people have about trans women, femininity, and gender. Rachael shares with us that, "for the first time I saw someone who was like me. It was incredible. It was an epiphany for me. Finally, I was able to give myself permission to be myself."And Julia (she/her) -- the slam poetry champion, spoken word artist, and musician, with a PhD in Biochemistry -- joins us for the conversation. She explains why she wrote Whipping Girl, "The book felt necessary for me to write because I wrote it as I was making sense of the first time in my life I was actually moving through the world as a woman, but then I was also facing the day-to-day sexism and sexualization that many women face."Don't forget to join us on November 10 at Lush Lounge and Theater in NE Minneapolis for our 2nd ever live event! My dad retired this year, and previous to 2019 had NEVER READ A BOOK- like, no joke-not even at school! But this year, he started picking up books (3 to be exact) and asked for “a book” for his birthday. So .. he’s not really sure what he likes in books- he read two memoirs (old rock n roll guys) and one hyper local history about the town he grew up in. He’s probably not a fiction guy, or ready for fiction. It’s such a clean slate I’m overwhelmed by where to go with this! He likes classic cars, late night tv, SNL, Will Ferrell sense of humor, he worked in television for 40 years, local to both/either Cleveland Ohio and Portland Maine. Not into politics. A note: I am planning on getting him Kitchen Confidential because I mentioned it to him & he thought that sounded fun. -Cate 2. Hello! I’m going to try to be as concise as possible with a sensitive ask. My cousin recently confided in me that she has started the transition from male to female. She is in her early 30s, so transition has some unique obstacles, and she has been open about her past struggles with depression and anxiety. So far family has been accepting as she has slowly confided various family members but I’m worried about some of our more religious family. I’ve been looking for books to help me support her as an ally. I have read some intersectional feminist works (Janet Mock and Whipping Girl by Julia Serano) but would like book recommendations more focused on transitioning later in life. I’m hoping for nonfiction but will take fiction as well. I’m a pharmacist so I’m also open to something more academic/scientific too. Thanks for your help! -Dianna 3. Hey! My English teacher said that if we put in a request here we would get some extra credit. We’re an obnoxious class and she loves this podcast so I thought I’d err on the side of caution. (You’ve responded to a request of hers in an episode before, her name is Kirsten. She was the one with the weird book list). I also would like a book recommendation because my bookshelf has been read and re-read numerous times over. Some of my favorite books are The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, the Ender’s Game series, and those weird Star Trek novels William Shatner wrote. Also if you have any strange, out of place books that don’t really have a spot on bookshelves, that’d be awesome too. Thanks! -Sam 4. Happy spoopy season! I’m looking for recommendations for fiction with ghosts as main / significant characters or fiction about ghost hunting. I really enjoyed City of Ghosts by V. E. Schwab and I’m interested in reading other books like it. I’m open to YA and adult fiction, although I tend to prefer YA most of the time. Thanks for your help!
My guest for today is Julia Serano. She’s a trans-bi activist, the author of the books “Whipping Girl” and “Excluded,” a musician, a spoken-word artist, and a biologist. Today I got her on the show to talk about the controversy surrounding Rapid-Onset Gender Dysphoria, and why the science behind it is pretty sketchy.Links:•Julia’s website: http://www.juliaserano.com/ •Julia on Medium: https://medium.com/@juliaserano •Julia on Twitter: http://twitter.com/JuliaSerano •Marissa’s GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/3z5hf2 •The Atheist Nomads: https://www.atheistnomads.com/ •The Trans Podcaster Visibility Initiative: https://www.facebook.com/transvisiblepodcaster/ •Dream Youth: http://dreamyouth.bandcamp.com •Asher Silberman: http://www.ashersilberman.com/ •My Twitter: http://twitter.com/tmamone •Bi Any Means on Twitter: http://twitter.com/bianymeanspod •Bi Any Means on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/bianymeanspodcast •The Bi Any Means/Biskeptical Podcast Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/179617892470906/ •Email: bianymeanspodcast@gmail.com •Listener line: 410-690-3558 •My Patreon page: http://www.patreon.com/tmamone•PayPal link: http://paypal.me/tmamone

Today I’m talking to multi-talented musician Isobel Morris about her artistic career and life as a transgender woman. Isobel began her musical career as a bassist, guitar and writer in a self-described “terrible teenage band”. She is now a composer, songwriter, singer and skilled music producer. As a multi-instrumentalist, she performs psychedelic music both solo and as frontwoman of Whipping Girl and the Analog Birds.
