From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above.  Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here. Rustic gallery glamFood writer Amy Thielen of Park Rapids recommends a gallery space in Detroit Lakes with a show that opens Thursday for the peak summer season. The gallery, run by ceramicist Ellen Moses, is called Art Project 605. Visitors can see the abstract landscape paintings and drawings of Jennie Ward of Lake Park. Entitled “Love Song in the Chaos,” the show will be up through Aug. 2.  Thielen offers this background: Ellen moved back from New York City during the COVID time. I feel like we gained in the North Country — we gained a lot of very cool people who moved back up north, where they are now working remotely. She and her wife Lori O'Dea bought a storefront. In the back, it's Ellen's studio: She makes plates, cups and 3D sculptures. In the front space of the storefront there's a gallery, and [Thursday night] a show opens by Jennie Ward, an artist who lives a little bit further west in Lake Park.Jennie's paintings are really interesting. They're very beautiful. They're abstract expressionist landscapes. The colors are big, swaths of thick paint; she's a great colorist. I'm very excited for this work. I think everybody in town will love it.  It's a beautifully renovated storefront: a beautiful, clean, minimalist working space. It reminds me of a corner in a bigger city, like New York or Chicago.— Amy ThielenGlobal grooves galaPadma Wudali is an amateur musician who plays the veena, a South Indian classical carnatic instrument. She loves the band Maithree, whose work combines Indian and Western classical music styles and instruments.Maithree will be performing this Saturday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hindu Society of Minnesota's campus in Maple Grove. The concert is a fundraiser for a new Cultural, Arts and Heritage Center.Padma says: Maithree is a band of Minnesotans who collaborate with classical music, both Western and Indian. So it to me it's not about them diluting any of their art forms, but rather stepping into each other spaces to create amazing music. The music that we will get to hear is Indian, classical Irish, Turkish melodies all seamlessly blended together and various compositions.Shruthi Rajesekar is the youngest member, and I'm super excited to see her work be represented by this group. She is a Western classical music composer who very much grew up in Plymouth and how her work is just being admired by so many people in the United States and abroad.— Padma WudaliBand blitz bashAmanda H. Malkin runs the PaperLoves Conservation in St. Peter, where she's involved in the local arts scene. She's looking forward to the 2024 Minnesota Original Music Festival, which starts next Wednesday, July 17 and culminates in two days of live, local music on July 20 and 21 at MN Square Park in St. Peter. Amanda describes the events leading up to next weekend: There are workshops and jam sessions. There's also this really awesome event called the 48-Hour Band Challenge. They basically invite musicians who are interested to put their names in a hat. New bands are formed by picking names out of the hat, and then those new bands have 48 hours to write a song together and then perform it. It's a way for musicians to find each other, workshop together, learn, practice, vibe!— Amanda H. Malkin

In this RKO 1946 episode we discuss Crack-Up (directed by Irving Reis), an eerie noir with a couple of great Expressionist set pieces. Pat O'Brien oozes vulnerability as a WWII vet and populist art critic who has to find out who's trying to make him look, or go, insane; Claire Trevor plays the love interest who's trying to help him (or is she?). Oh yeah, and we also watched Step By Step (directed by Phil Rosen), a goofy spy drama in which Lawrence Tierney gets to play a nice guy for once. Richard Serra, one of the greatest artists of the past 50 years, a linchpin of the post-minimalist scene in late 1960s and early 1970s New York and later the creator of vast steel ellipses and spirals, died on Tuesday 26 March. We mark the passing of this titan of sculpture with Donna De Salvo, the senior adjunct curator of special projects at the Dia Foundation, whose Dia Beacon space has several major works by Serra on permanent view. There are a host of exhibitions focusing on expressionist art in the US and Europe in 2024 and in this episode we focus on two of them. The first ever Käthe Kollwitz retrospective in New York is taking place at the Museum of Modern Art or MoMA, while other shows dedicated to her are taking place in Frankfurt and Stockholm. We speak to Starr Figura, the curator of MoMA's show, which opens this weekend, about Kollwitz's extraordinary work and life. Then, we talk to Natalia Sidlina, the curator of Expressionists: Kandinsky, Münter and the Blue Rider, a major survey opening at Tate Modern next month of the German Expressionist group, which looks anew at the deep friendships that formed the basis of the group, their international outlook and their multidisciplinary output.Richard Serra's work is on long-term view across five galleries at Dia Beacon, New York, US.Käthe Kollwitz, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 31 March-20 July; Städel Museum, Frankfurt, until 9 June; SMK – National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen, 7 November-25 February 2025.Expressionists: Kandinsky, Münter and the Blue Rider, Tate Modern, London, 25 April-20 October 2024; Gabriele Münter: the Great Expressionist Woman Painter, Thyssen Bornemisza, Madrid, 12 November-9 February 2025.Further expressionist exhibitions in 2024: The Anxious Eye: German Expressionism and Its Legacy, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, until 27 May; Munch to Kirchner: The Heins Collection of Modern and Expressionist Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Texas, US, until 5 January 2025; Munch and Kirchner: Anxiety and Expression, Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut, US, until 23 June; Erich Heckel, Museum of Fine Arts Ghent, Belgium, 12 October-25 January 2025. Retro Grade Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 1, 2023 116:44

“UNTIL THE BREAK OF DAWN..”On this Halloween, we decided to cover one of the first horror films ever made. We cover the famous, German Expressionist film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, directed by Robert Wiene from 1920. If you would like to watch the film before listening to us, the film is available for free on various sites, but we recommend watching the one that has fancy intertitles for the text and a blue tint in the beginning like this version here. The film is a “silent film“ so there is no spoken dialogue which we understand maybe might be a little intimidating for some audiences. However, we encourage you to give it a try so we can go on this adventure together. What does a horror film that is over 100 years old look like? How dated is it really? (Spoilers: It actually isn't) What is Expressionism? To put it simply, it is the artistic depiction of an emotional experience, rather than a realistic one. The set design of Caligari doesn't resemble our own world, but a world that suits the content of the narrative. Caligari seeks to tell an emotional truth, how the characters feel living in this world, than present the world as it is. We talk about why we think this choice works and the film is rightly described as a classic, but also hope that if the film is ever remade, that this Expressionist theme isn't lost in the translation to modern filmmaking sensibilities. The film's strong style in its set design influenced the choices made for the actors, the costumes and even the previously mentioned intertitles. Some of the techniques used to generate audience anxiety in this film can be seen in films today such as Alien, It Follows, and even The Babadook! We talk about how the film was made, and how not everyone agrees on how that went down. The film has a “frame story.” For this film, that means the bulk of the film takes place within a story told by one of the characters. The writers of the film were allegedly very upset about this, and stay they knew nothing about it, but 70 years later when the only surviving script was made available for public viewing, we find out that wasn't 100% true. The writers talk about being on set, but the set designers say they were never there, there are conflicting reports on who actually was the producer for the film, etc etc. The narrative of the production of the film is almost as unreliable as the film's narrator! We also talk about the history of when this film came out. The world was different, and the expectations of what the experience of “going to the movies” was also very different. A close up on a giant screen hit different for those audiences, an authority figure taking advantage of ordinary citizens meant something different for a Germany that just got out on the losing side of a World War. Despite being 100 years removed from the intended audience, we believe the film can still resonate with a modern audience. We hope you enjoy this episode!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

If Paula Modersohn-Becker had lived as long as Picasso, you might know her name as well as you know his. That is the claim of multiple art historians who celebrate her for her use of color and her breaking open of the nude genre. Her work is startling for portraying women as real women, with absolutely no regard for the masculine gaze. Her life was a struggle to find her way between the demands of her career, the demands of her society, and the demands of her own heart. Unfortunately, she died in childbirth at the age of 31, and so we will never know what else she might have done, if she had lived. The poll on the next series topic is still open! Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter and printmaker who lived from 1863-1944. His fascination with the darker aspects of the human experience is evident in many of his works, including "The Scream," which is a masterpiece of emotional expression that captures the intense pain and despair of the human experience. The painting's ability to resonate with viewers on a deeply personal level has ensured that it remains a cultural touchstone over a century after it was created. "The Scream" impacted modern art by influencing the Expressionist movement and inspiring many other artists to explore the depths of human emotion in their work. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/vidalsocial/support

Ryan, Louie & Al plug in our Tascams and reminisce on the plight of love as we discuss White Town's 1997 smash hit, "Your Woman."

Interviews by Brainard Carey

Paco Barragán (Oviedo, Spain) is a curator and culture theorist that believes that the so-called “white cube” is dead. Since 2016 he doesn't do “white cubes.” Between 2015 and 2017 he oversaw the visual arts section of Matucana 100 in Santiago de Chile. As a curator he is interested both in the history of museology and exhibition design and the history of the making of the art market. Why? Because you can´t have a good command of curatorial practices without a profound knowledge of the art market, which had a profound impact on museological and curatorial practices. Most of the known museological displays, from the Period Room to the Impressionist or Expressionist hang respond after all to profound commercial goals. For this reason, Barragán wrote a book about the history of art fairs and biennials since ancient Greece and Rome until today as he understands that we need a longue durée perspective. At this very moment he's finishing a book about the history of collecting since Assyria until today. Museums are the result of all kinds of collecting, so it has sense to dive into that. Barragán thinks that a curator must be a narrator, a museologist, and an exhibition designer. Today curators are only narrators, the so-called Harald Szeemann model, but we need to go back to the practices of Wilhelm Bode, Ludwig Justi, Alexander Dorner and Alfred H. Barr, Jr. to do our job properly. In other words: to be a Gesammtkurator. That is also the reason why we only see “white cubes”, from Tate to MoMA to Mori Museum, because curators these days are only narrators and have no love for the past. But the future of curating lies in creating “contextual museologies”, id est, better and more attractive presentations. Darius Quarles has been fascinated with art since he was five years old. Growing up on his grandparent's farm, he found himself interpreting his visions of the world through sketching. Since childhood, Darius has lived all over the world, started a family, and even found himself in some legal trouble. But no matter the circumstances, Darius has always fallen back on his love for art. Today, Darius is the proud owner of Virginia Henry's, an art gallery, where he shares his life experiences as a black man through modern expressionist art.   Early on in life, Darius's struggle to effectively communicate his feelings caused him to suffer consequences in his relationships with himself and others. After settling down in Durham, NC, Darius dedicated the next 21 years to becoming the ambassador of his own life. Over the years, his passion for art has blessed him with opportunities to evolve into the person he is today: an active member of the community, a devoted artist, and a loving father.  There is nothing in life quite like finding your passion. Tune into this week's episode of Southern Soul Live Stream to hear Darius interpret some of his favorite pieces and learn more about the power of art to bring experience, emotion and culture to life.    Quotes • “If you want it, go get it.” (04:09-04:10) • “If I was going to fail, then I needed to fail on my own. I needed to fail and I needed to fail hard.” (20:51-20:55) • “I've got things I can talk about, I've seen, I've heard, and if I can't really produce it, I'm gonna do my best to give you the idea, then you figure it out.” (24:33-24:42) • “It wasn't until I got to a bigger city that I started to see the cultural influences of African American artists and art in a larger state.” (41:58-42:07) • “If you buy art sincerely, just for yourself, you'll find that it's far more satisfying.” (43:25-43:31) • “When you buy art, you're also telling the artists that I value you, I value you as a person, I value you and your journey that brought you to the canvas, and your expression of whatever it is that you're trying to share with us.” (44:25-44:44) • “When I look at Darius' work I'm seeing this mix of hip, urban, energy, and contemporary.” (48:35-48:42) • “I had to get in where I fit in, and gouache was entry level. Then I just kind of gravitated to acrylics and acrylics are my jam, no doubt.” (49:58-50:09)   Links Connect with Dariues Quarles: • Gallery: https://www.5pointsgallery.com/darius-quarles/ • Website: http://www.virginiahenrys.com • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/darius.quarles.5   Connect with Southern Soul Live Stream: • Want to listen to our next episode live? On this week's show we will explore the development of Modernism in New York - the new architecture based on International and Chicago models that swept up Park Avenue and redefined the New York City skyline. From Lever House to the Seagram Building, to Expressionist landmarks such as the Guggenheim Museum and the TWA Terminal at JFK International Airport, we will discuss the buildings that created a new era of American design. My solo guest will be Rediscovering New York regular and the show's Special Consultant, David Griffin of Landmark Branding, and the special consultant for Rediscovering New York.Tune in for this fascinating conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by clicking here.Show NotesSegment 1Today's guest is David Griffin who is a regular of the show. He is the founder and CEO of Landmark Branding and the special consultant of Rediscovering New York. Landmark Branding provides creative sales-enhancing services. He first got interested in this industry when he was young and one of the first employees of the Park's department in Long Island. Sometimes he got the opportunity to stay overnight in one of the old structured buildings which he loved. His mother also made it a point of concern to educate him on history. Today's main topic is modernism which is a branch or art that symbolized revival or a new era.Segment 2In 1939, the Museum of Modern Art was designed by Edward Darrell Stone. He had the assistance of the trustee Phillip Godwin. It eventually moved from its former location on 5th avenue to a custom built home on W 53 Street where it still remains today. The garden was designed by the Architectural Curator named John McAndrew. All together it is found to be one of the most beautiful small scale environments in New York City. Public housing is also discussed, including the Williamsburg houses in Brooklyn. They were built during 1936-1938.Segment 3David founded Landmark Branding in 2013 and ever since he has offered marketing support for real estate brokers, developers, designers and architects. He also writes articles, has a blog and offers VIP tours. Next, the Lever House is brought up. It is the first building in the city to be entirely glass. Its construction took about a decade and stood as a renowned milestone for American architecture. In 1982, it was designated an official landmark. The Seagram building is also discussed. It is made of bronze and stained glass which are expensive materials. The place was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and completed in 1958.Segment 4To end the show, the two banter about famous American architects. Frank Lloyd Wright was the first. He had no formal training but was still one of the best. He did not call himself a modernist architect because he did not want to put himself into a certain category. When Wright was collaborating with Solomon R. Guggenheim, Wright did not love the location being in New York at first but they settled on 5th Avenue and loved it because of its close proximity to the famous Central Park. This ended up being one of Wright's most famous buildings.
