Billie Anne is back—and she's not holding back. In this fiery episode of The CrossYaas Podcast, she's joined by Sarah (beaming in from Scotland) for a raw, no-BS conversation about the global rise in anti-trans hate, political scapegoating, and the terrifying echoes of history we're living through. Together, they name names, spill truths, and share what it means to survive—and thrive—as trans women in a world that wants to erase them. It's angry. It's honest. It's radical. It's necessary. We dive into trans joy, rebellion as authenticity, and the power of showing up for each other.

Welcome to Series 2 of Discourse: The Grabbing Back Podcast! We are so excited to be starting this season with such a fantastic episode with guests Julia Serano and Talia Mae Bettcher. We discuss, amongst many ideas, the perceptions and readings of our bodies, the cultural specificity of boundaries and how they tend to affect women more than men and how femininity is considered quote-unquote artificial in a similar way to transness, and how dangerous that can be. Trigger warnings: transphobia and sexual assault. Talia is an expert on feminist philosophy, transgender studies and philosphy of personhood. She's a professor at California State University and her upcoming book is Intimacy and Illusion: An Essay in Trans Philosophy. Julia is a writer, performer, activist, musician and biologist, she is best known for her book Whipping Girl and her upcoming book is titled Sexed Up: How Society Sexualises us and how we can Fight Back. Texts mentioned and discussed: Full‐Frontal Morality: The Naked Truth about Gender by Talia Mae Bettcher (2012) Playfulness, World-Travelling and Loving Perception by Maria Lugones (1987) What Does it Cost to Tell the Truth by Riki Anne Wilchins (1997) Homogenizing Versus Holistic Views of Gender and Sexuality by Julia Serano - Chapter 13 of Excluded (2013) The Difference Sameness Makes: Objectification, Sex Work, and Queerness by Ann J. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Autogynephilia discourse is so absurdly bad on all sides, published by tailcalled on July 23, 2023 on LessWrong. In Blanchard's Dangerous Idea and the Plight of the Lucid Crossdreamer, Zack criticizes the rationalist community and the trans community for various things, including denial of autogynephilia as a cause of transness: I could go on ... but do I need to? After having seen enough of these laughable denials of autogynephilia, the main question in my mind has become less, "Is the two-type androphilic/autogynephilic taxonomy of MtF transsexuality approximately true?" (answer: yes, obviously) and more, "How dumb do you (proponents of gender-identity theories) think we (the general public) are?" (answer: very, but correctly). In some ways this is not a completely unreasonable critique, but I think it has a lot less bite once one realizes just how dysfunctional the discourse on this subject is, even among the ideology that Zack endorses as a replacement. A microcosm of the dysfunction can be seen in Michael Bailey and Kevin Hsu's study, How Autogynephilic Are Natal Females? (pdf). They are responding to a debate where Charles Moser, Scott Alexander, Julia Serano, and Jaimie Veale argue that cis women are often autogynephilic too, and that this suggests that autogynephilia in trans women is not so significant. In response, Michael Bailey (the effective leader of autogynephilia theory) and Kevin Hsu recruit samples of highly active members of online erotic AGP communities, and find that these samples are on average much more AGP than cis women, and therefore conclude that AGP in cis women is dubious. Substituting a sample of highly active members of online erotic AGP communities for trans women is an insanely biased methodology! And when called out on it (pdf), Michael Bailey essentially goes "well the debate isn't about trans women, it's about AGPs, so it's totally appropriate" (pdf), which again is just an insane response when very obviously the debate is about trans women! All the people Bailey is responding to were clearly talking about trans women in their texts! One would think that people would point out these problems so the study would be appropriately rejected. I have tried to do so, and some trans activists have tried to do so, but people on the Blanchardian side have generally rejected it. Now here's a thought experiment for you: If people cannot converge to the truth on objectively observable facts about who has said what that can be seen by reading the debates, how can they ever be expected to converge to the truth about complex psychological causal and distributional inference questions? Especially when the objectively observable facts concern what psychological causal and distributional inference questions are under dispute? Even if the specific point of AGP in cis women doesn't move you much (I don't think it should), this dysfunctional discourse might make you tempted to infer that Blanchardians do a lot of other shenanigans to make their theories look better than they really are. And I think you would be right to make that inference, because I have a lot of points of critique on my gender blog that go unaddressed. But my critiques aren't the core point I'm raising here, rather I'm pointing out that people have good reasons to be exhausted with autogynephilia theorists. Today I interview Julia Serano about her new book, Sexed Up: How Society Sexualizes Us and How We Can Fight Back (Seal, 2022). Serano is an activist, performer, and acclaimed author of Whipping Girl, Excluded, and other books. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, the Guardian, TIME, Salon, and Ms. In Sexed Up, Serano argues that sexualization is a far more pervasive problem that we might recognize. She explores such questions as: Why do we perceive men as sexual predators and women as sexual objects? Why are LGBTQ+ people stereotyped as being sexually indiscriminate and deceptive? Why are people of color still being hyper-sexualized? Serano offers not only a clear-eyed understanding of how sexualization occurs and the harms it creates, but she also offers ways of leading us out of these dynamics toward a more kind, humane, and sex-positive future. Elle continues the series asking the question, "Am I transgender?", an inquiry that comes to the forefront of trans people's mind at some point in their lives or another (or repeatedly). Feminists have long challenged the ways in which men tend to sexualize women.  But pioneering activist, biologist, and trans woman Julia Serano argues that sexualization is a far more pervasive problem—it's something that we all do to other people, often without being aware of it.  In her latest book, Sexed Up: How Society Sexualizes Us, and How We Can Fight Back, Julia examines how the stereotypes of sexualization push minorities farther into the margins, and how even the privileged are policed from transgressing, or they also become targets. In this episode, Julia is joined in a conversation with writer and editor Abeni Jones that exposes the harmful ways we are all sexualized and shares ways of seeking a bold path for resistance. In this episode, we talk with lighting designer, radio host, and teacher Rachael Cady (she/her) about the book that saved her life: Whipping Girl by Julia Serano. It's a collection of personal essays that debunk many of the myths and misconceptions that people have about trans women, femininity, and gender. Rachael shares with us that, "for the first time I saw someone who was like me. It was incredible. It was an epiphany for me. Finally, I was able to give myself permission to be myself."And Julia (she/her) -- the slam poetry champion,  spoken word artist, and musician, with a PhD in Biochemistry -- joins us for the conversation. She explains why she wrote Whipping Girl, "The book felt necessary for me to write because I wrote it as I was making sense of the first time in my life I was actually moving through the world as a woman, but then I was also facing the day-to-day sexism and sexualization that many women face."Don't forget to join us on November 10 at Lush Lounge and Theater in NE Minneapolis for our 2nd ever live event! Julia Serano is a PhD molecular biologist, writer, and musician whose books include Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity, Outspoken: A Decade of Transgender Activism and Trans Feminism, and the surrealist novel 99 Erics. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, TIME, The Guardian, The Daily Beast, Salon, and elsewhere.Dr. Serano is a patient debunker of anti-trans talking points, and has written a number of articles patiently taking apart common misconceptions. Her "transgender glossary of sorts" is also an essential resource for those who find gender and sexuality terms confusing or imprecise. Dr. Serano joined to go through some of the most common arguments made about trans people in the popular press and show why they are pernicious, factually incorrect nonsense. Having previously spent two decades as a professional biologist, she corrects the laughably ignorant claims that transgender people misunderstand or ignore "biology." In fact, it is the critics who are unacquainted with the basics of science. In this episode, we look at claims made by J.K. Rowling, Helen Joyce, Deborah Soh, Abigail Shrier, and Ben Shapiro. Julia applies the same kind of patient and informed explanatory approach that characterizes her prolific writing on the subject. We didn't get to all of the major talking points but you can check out Julia's writings on some of the common ones here:- Bathrooms and Sexual Predators - examining the claim that allowing people to use the bathroom of their choice will increase instances of sexual victimization. In fact, the opposite is the case. - Extinction of Lesbians - examining the claim that increased trans identification is a threat to the existence of lesbians - Social Contagion - examining the claim that young girls are experiencing "rapid onset gender dysphoria" and becoming trans because of peer influence - Autogynephilia - examining the claim that trans identities are built around sexual desire - Desistance and Detransition - examining the claim that trans children will grow out of it or are being pressured to - "Trans Women Aren't Women" - examining the claim that trans people are delusional about their biology- "Biological sex" - examining faulty claims made about biologyIn Current Affairs you can read Nathan's own articles on J.K. Rowling, Abigail Shrier's Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters, and the debate about trans women in sports. Natalie Wynn's video about Ben Shapiro is here. My dad retired this year, and previous to 2019 had NEVER READ A BOOK- like, no joke-not even at school! But this year, he started picking up books (3 to be exact) and asked for “a book” for his birthday. So .. he’s not really sure what he likes in books- he read two memoirs (old rock n roll guys) and one hyper local history about the town he grew up in. He’s probably not a fiction guy, or ready for fiction. It’s such a clean slate I’m overwhelmed by where to go with this! He likes classic cars, late night tv, SNL, Will Ferrell sense of humor, he worked in television for 40 years, local to both/either Cleveland Ohio and Portland Maine. Not into politics. A note: I am planning on getting him Kitchen Confidential because I mentioned it to him & he thought that sounded fun. -Cate 2. Hello! I’m going to try to be as concise as possible with a sensitive ask. My cousin recently confided in me that she has started the transition from male to female. She is in her early 30s, so transition has some unique obstacles, and she has been open about her past struggles with depression and anxiety. So far family has been accepting as she has slowly confided various family members but I’m worried about some of our more religious family. I’ve been looking for books to help me support her as an ally. I have read some intersectional feminist works (Janet Mock and Whipping Girl by Julia Serano) but would like book recommendations more focused on transitioning later in life. I’m hoping for nonfiction but will take fiction as well. I’m a pharmacist so I’m also open to something more academic/scientific too. Thanks for your help! -Dianna 3. Hey! My English teacher said that if we put in a request here we would get some extra credit. We’re an obnoxious class and she loves this podcast so I thought I’d err on the side of caution. (You’ve responded to a request of hers in an episode before, her name is Kirsten. She was the one with the weird book list). I also would like a book recommendation because my bookshelf has been read and re-read numerous times over. Some of my favorite books are The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, the Ender’s Game series, and those weird Star Trek novels William Shatner wrote. Also if you have any strange, out of place books that don’t really have a spot on bookshelves, that’d be awesome too. Thanks! -Sam 4. Happy spoopy season! I’m looking for recommendations for fiction with ghosts as main / significant characters or fiction about ghost hunting. I really enjoyed City of Ghosts by V. E. Schwab and I’m interested in reading other books like it. I’m open to YA and adult fiction, although I tend to prefer YA most of the time. Thanks for your help!

Blake’s crushing. Hard. On his new best friend and favorite person: Korry. They spend every day together. They sleep in the same bed together. They plan their futures together. But there are signs that show that Korry might not be feeling the same way about Blake. Blake begins to suspect it has something to do with the fact that Korry’s attracted to straight-acting, masculine-looking, manly men.   And Korry’s not alone. In this episode, we continue our conversation on gender and femininity and look at what happens when we move out of the heterosexual dating world and into the queer one. Kaitlin assumed that gay and queer life is one big femme-loving genderfuck. But flipping through gay hook-up apps, it’s easy to spot a “no fats, no femmes” trend. So what’s the deal? Ep 2 of “Pansy”: A season about where masculinity and femininity meet. Credits:   Produced with Julia Alsop. Editorial support by Cassie Wagler.
