Deep in the desert of Djibouti, the French Foreign Legion trains their bodies to become living weapons. This tight-knit squad of highly specialized individuals are prepping for a conflict that never finds them, where individuality is ground down into dust, and all that's left is the collective militaristic identity. The salted flats and arid landscape make for an operatic backdrop of Claire Denis' 1999 feature, Beau Travail, where bodies become the only means for outward expression, and creeping thoughts tear at the soul. An adaption of Herman Melville's novella, Billy Budd, this film follows Adjudant-Chef Galoup as he reflects on his life during his time in Africa leading a group of soldiers, and his inner tension towards a new gifted recruit, Sentain, up to where he ends up back at his home in Marseilles. This film excels in creating space for what is left unsaid, and holding onto moments that exist in-between action and reaction. Like a rocket primed for launch, all we can do is hold our breath and see what comes next. As always, thank you for listening, and we hope you enjoy our discussion. These classic propaganda films draw fascinating parallels to current events, and it's worth examining how MAGA forces are attempting to erase and rewrite history through modern tactics. From book banning at military bases to corporate attempts to appease Trump, this episode analyzes how resistance to fascism remains relevant today. The episode includes discussions of historic films while tying them to contemporary threats to democracy, media manipulation, and the importance of preserving historical truth. On this inspection flight, the clipper traveled to the Azores, Lisbon, Marseilles, Southampton, and Foynes and back. On June 17, 1939, Pan American arranged for a special flight for 16 members of the press departing from Port Washington on the Atlantic Clipper; a brilliant marketing and public relations strategy for the airline. This press flight is historically and culturally significant because the radio reporters on board reported live at an altitude of 10,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean to listeners all over the country tuned into their radio sets with great interest. The cost for a one-way ticket to Europe was $375 (that's about $8,500 in 2024 money adjusted for inflation) or $675 roundtrip (which is over $15,000 today). There are no original Boeing 314 flying boats in existence today. The Synaxarion calls him "Our Father Cassian, chosen by God to bring the illumination of Eastern monasticism to the West". He was born in Scythia of noble parents, and was well educated in secular things. But, thirsting for perfection, he left all behind and travelled with his friend Germanus to the Holy Land, where he became a monk in Bethlehem. After becoming established in the monastic life for several years, St John felt a desire for greater perfection, and sought out the Fathers of the Egyptian Desert. He spent seven years in the Desert, learning from such Fathers as Moses, Serapion, Theonas, Isaac and Paphnutius. Through long struggles in his cell, St John developed from personal experience a divinely-inspired doctrine of spiritual combat. Many say that it was he who first listed the eight basic passions: gluttony, fornication, avarice, anger, sadness, acedia, vainglory and pride.   In time, struggles in the Alexandrian Church made life so difficult for the Egyptian monks that St John (still accompanied by his friend Germanus), sought refuge in Constantinople, where they came under the care and protection of St John Chrysostom. When the holy Archbishop was exiled, St John once again fled, this time to Rome, where he came under the protection of Pope Innocent I. This proved to be providential for the Western Church, for it was St John who brought the treasures of Desert spirituality to the monasteries of the West. He founded the monastery of St Victor in Marseilles, then, at the request of his bishop, wrote the Cenobitic Institutions, in which he adapted the austere practices of the Egyptian Fathers to the conditions of life in Gaul. He went on to write his famous Conferences, which became the main channel by which the wisdom of the desert East was passed to the monastics of the West. Saint Benedict developed much of his Rule (which at one time governed most monasteries in the Latin world) from St John's Institutions,, and ordered that the Conferences be read in all monasteries.   Saint John reposed in peace in 435, and has been venerated by the monks of the West as their Father and one of their wisest teachers. His relics are still venerated at the Abbey of St Victor in Marseilles.   St John's writings were soon attacked by extreme Augustinians and, as Augustinianism became the official doctrine of the Latin Church, his veneration fell out of favor in the West. Outside the Orthodox Church, his commemoration is now limited to the diocese of Marseilles.

These bonus episodes are special, unique, and – we hope – round out a fuller, more multifaceted picture of what we think about. Today, I'm introducing you to a business and economics correspondent from Moscow who I'm honored to call a close friend. Her name is Andrea Palasciano. She's covered business stories from Paris, Marseilles, Rome and Moscow. She's fluent in Italian, German, Spanish, French, English and Russian. She's covered stories ranging from diamond mining in Siberia to sleep deprivation. She's close friends with Evan Gershkovich, the 31-year-old Wall Street Journal reporter who's currently in a Russian prison. Today is his 100th day behind bars. Andrea and I were both Knight-Bagehot Fellows and bonded during our year of immersing ourselves into deeply understanding how to tell better stories about business and economics.
