The workers at World Central Kitchen, including an Australian woman named Zomi Frankcom, were providing critical relief to Palestinians in the form of food.  Their deaths now risk entrenching starvation further, as aid organisations begin to doubt whether they're receiving the protections and safety they should be offered in a war zone.  Today, world editor for The Saturday Paper, Jonathan Pearlman, on Australia's response to the Israeli attack and whether this is a turning point in the Middle East. Today we are joined by Mark, a Chin from the Zomi tribe. For Mark and his fellow Chin Christians, the military coup represents not only a loss of basic political freedoms, but also a loss of religious freedom. Before the recent democratic reforms, freedom of worship was by no means guaranteed; the Burmese military would routinely visit Chin communities to destroy crosses and churches. For the Chins, a return to military rule represents a return to days when their faith could not be practiced openly. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the first known act of armed resistance since the February 1st coup was launched by Chins in Kalay. Mark describes the Chins' independent spirit: they fought with the Allies against the Japanese in World War II, and against the British before that during the Colonial period. As a result, they enjoyed an usual degree of autonomy during that period. Even today, every Chin household has home-made flintlock “Tumee” rifle. That weapon was used to ward off the British and is also a mainstay for hunting. That same hunter spirit has motivated many Chin to resist the Burmese military, although Mark has his concerns: the tumee is only able to fire off a single bullet once every few minutes, rendering it ineffective against a Burmese force with military-grade automatic weapons. The Tatmadaw has exerted particularly brutal pressure on the Chin people, most notably in Mindat, where their city-wide assault resulted in 90% of the residents fleeing into the jungle. Mark shares a call he received from a contact there who said, “I don't know who these soldiers are! They are like crazy, or high with something. They are not like humans, they are very cruel.” Support this podcast

"We are blessed to work in a clinic that has a very large immigrant population. Over the years, we have cared for those who speak over 80+ languages with an even higher number of unique countries and regions represented. Arabic and Spanish are our two most commonly spoken non-English languages. We also have patients who speak unique languages such as Kurdish, Zomi, and Uyghur who do not have a corresponding recognized country affiliated with them. Several of our staff and residents are foreign-born. Many of them are first-generation or come from ethnic homes, and nearly all have a deep appreciation for world cultures. Despite this, there is no way we can know about every unique culture and every corresponding custom. Yet studies have shown that immigrant families are strongly impacted by clinic members’ demeanor towards them and their perceived acceptance of them. Maybe it is the language struggles that make our unspoken actions so important, but it is a factor that needs to be accounted for, especially in COVID times, where even basic facial gestures of greeting are not seen. Families may decide if they want to come back to our clinic based on something that we did or didn’t do, such as simply making them feel welcomed." Gabriella Gonzales is a pediatric resident. She shares her story and discusses her KevinMD article, "A simple act to help families struggling to find their way in a foreign culture." We get to see the results of some of Jia's meddling and inciting rebellion here, and it's still not clear to me what her objective is. Is she just trying to give the warlike factions something to focus on, so that he efforts regarding getting civil laws in place will go less noticed? Meanwhile, there's an interesting dynamic between her and Zomi, as well as between Zomi and Thera, that I find really compelling. I hope that Zomi learns to trust a little less easily in the future, and that Jia isn't sending her into danger. Thank you all so much for listening, and I will see you again soon in a new episode!

Thank you for this commission, Kyle!I'm really eating my words about the way this story is set up. Initially I was so eager to hear what Zomi's thesis was that every time we went back to her childhood I was getting impatient and frustrated. But now that I'm seeing how all of this is tying together, I'm realizing how important all the setup was and how carefully thought out the whole premise is.I'm really here for Liu's anti-capitalist perspective and his disdain for inherited wealth and the classist privileges of higher education. I can't wait to see what Kuni's response to this all will be, because he's in a unique position to understand what Zomi is trying to say. She really makes a big show of letting everyone know that she's only here because she fed the judges' opinions back to them, and it's pretty incredible. And oh yeah, there's a riot happening. Then there's the flashback to the moment when Luan makes Zomi her first brace, and when they discover the lava flowers.
