For this week’s episode, Kari (back from hiatus) and Chuks take on the idea of “Asian Privilege.” Why do so many people, from white people to People of Color, believe and propagate this idea? But first: Michael Brown’s parents are to stand at the U.N. and the circus surrounding Rasmea Odeh’s trial. Listener questions this week come from rosieisrising with regards to why someone would chose to partake in the imperialist machine that is the U.S. armed forces and givingyoutheflick about Australia.

How important is mentorship for students of color from teachers of their respective backgrounds? For this episode (Kari is gone for the week), Chuks talks with Shirley, an Asian American public school teacher, to explore these questions and more.

There’s this pervasive cultural narrative that deliberately and consciously aims to depoliticize love (e.g. the cries of "Love is love!" and "But love is pure!")—it could even be called a national project in this age of "color blindness". The implications of this are far and disturbing. Love is not just love, and who we choose to love is tied into systems of domination like white supremacy and patriarchy. Love, whether we like it or not, is incredibly political, especially when we (as POC) date white people. In this episode we dive in to discuss these messy racial dating politics of dating white people as a POC. We are joined for this discussion by Chuk's friend Shirley (onetoc on tumblr), and we also discuss for short news: #FergusonOctober, Vonderrit Myers, Gay Marriage and "How To Get Away With Murder"

SPOILER ALERT. In this week’s discussion, we discuss Catching Fire. The movie gets a lot right, from the portrayal of (white) women to how oppression is carried out. However, when it comes to race, the movie gets a lot wrong. We have input from ideologyofaminor, saotome-michi, and panaghiotis223 about where the movie could’ve been different. Despite the movie portraying race in an artificial suspension, a lot of fans are still uncomfortable with casting choices for the opposite reasons we are.

The movie contains a lot of progressive ideas and portrayals of People of Color, yet it still relies on some problematic tropes. Related topics: Black-Asian solidarity, the portrayal of Asian women and men in Western media, and the tensions that rise between Women of Color and Men of Color due to (lack of) media representation.
