Very few beauty entrepreneurs have had more success than Carolyn Aronson. In 2006, the longtime hairstylist and salon owner launched professional hair-care brand It's a 10 with one hero product: Miracle Leave-In spray. The $21 formula was an immediate success for its ability to hydrate, smooth, condition, defrizz and protect hair with one formula. The brand had immediate success by seeding the product to professional hairstylists before entering Ulta Beauty, Target, Sally's Beauty, Cosmoprof, SalonCentric and Amazon, and selling DTC. Using Miracle Leave-In as the anchor for expansion, the company added formulations through the years for various hair types and preferences. This includes new Miracle Leave-Ins for coily, blonde and men's hair; keratin- or color-treated hair; and lite, fragrance-free and dye-free variations. Each new collection includes shampoo, conditioner, masks and a variety of other offerings. The brand also sells body care. In 2017, Aronson bought out her co-founder to become the sole owner of It's a 10. She's taken on no investors. The brand currently brings in around $500 million in gross annual sales and is distributed in more than 125 countries. On a personal level, Aronson has also provided inspiration for women in the beauty industry. She entered the foster care system at age 2, began working in salons as a teenager and is currently one of the beauty industry's few self-made billionaires. She's also known for her philanthropy. For example, It's a 10 donated $250,000 worth of products to the Los Angeles Dream Center in January to help victims of the Los Angeles wildfires. This year, Aronson is expanding her empire with Cloud Haircare, a new, Gen Z-focused line of shampoo, conditioner and styling products sold in two collections: nourishing and volumizing. Each SKU sells for $11.99 in CVS, Walmart and DTC. The line features colorful, flat lay-friendly packaging and Gen Z-focused values: vegan, Leaping Bunny-approved formulas free of parabens and SLS, and sold in bottles made from post-consumer plastic resins. Aronson's expansion into mass comes at a time when the sector has experienced a renaissance, of sorts. New, fresh brands are currently flooding the market, many of which are priced at $11.99 — like Odele, Saltair, Being Frenshe, Laura Polko and Function of Beauty — while bargain formulas like Suave are back with new branding. Beyond Cloud Haircare, Aronson entered the home hair-color space in 2023 with Rewind it 10, a line of men's home hair and beard dyes. She partnered with friend and rapper Fat Joe on the collection, as well as her husband Jeff Aronson. It sells for $15 per box DTC and through Sally's Beauty, CVS, Walmart, Amazon and more retailers. To entice shoppers, each shade of hair dye is modeled by an influential figure like model Tyson Beckford, football star Trace Kelsie, DJ Khaled and celebrity face Brody Jenner, among many others. On this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast, Aronson provides Glossy listeners an inside view of her move into mass hair care with Cloud and insights into navigating the men's marketplace with Rewind it 10. She also gives listeners a teaser on her entry into women's hair color and her hopes for Cloud Haircare.

Bethann Hardison is the fashion icon behind so many fashion icons: she worked as a modeling agent in the era of the supermodel – brokering the careers of stars like Kimora Lee Simmons and Tyson Beckford. And when models of color all but vanished from view at the turn of the millennium – she forced designers to bring them back. Host Brittany Luse sits down with Bethann to discuss the new documentary about Bethann's life, Invisible Beauty, and why fashion imagery, while fraught, is still powerful in our culture.
Naomi Campbell, Kimora Lee Simmons, Tyra Banks, Tyson Beckford were dazzling, barrier-breaking supermodels of color in the '90s. But two decades earlier, Bethann Hardison burst onto French and American runways with a defiant strut and sui generis personality. In this intimate and insightful documentary, INVISIBLE BEAUTY, fashion revolutionary and co-director Bethann Hardison looks back on her journey as a pioneering Black model, modeling agent, and activist, shining a light on an untold chapter in the fight for racial diversity. Catalyzing change requires continuous championing, and as the next generation takes the reins, Hardison reflects on her personal journey and the cost of being a pioneer, as well as the satisfaction of being the first Black woman to own a racially diverse modeling agency, Hardison called out fashion houses around the world (including Prada and Calvin Klein) for the lack of models of color in their shows and the exclusionary casting calls that had become rampant in the industry (“No Blacks, no ethnics”), while profiting from Black consumers. In tandem with Frédéric Tcheng (Halston, Dior and I), Bethann Hardison and her co-director trace her impact on fashion from runway shows in New York and Paris in the '70s to roundtables about lack of racial diversity in the early 2000s. Interviews with industry players speak to the state of fashion, while friends and family attest to Hardison's rebellious and ambitious spirit. INVISIBLE BEAUTY is an absorbing record of Hardison's accomplishments and a rare contemplation on the life of a radical thinker. The co-directors Bethann Hardison and Frederic Tcheng join us for a conversation on the cinematic and personal journey that the film has taken them on. Nostalgia, it's like it never left for Gossip Girl. I mean, New York's mayor at the time, Bloomberg, even gave the show its own day in the city - January 26th.Tune into this week's episode as I bring you back to familiar people, music, and an interview with model, actress, and now mom, plus wellness guru, Nicole Fiscella, behind the original hit series Gossip Girl.It was an era that over-popularized the upper echelon kids of the #UES and sensationalized the glitz and glamor of New York City to many, which is maybe why many of us loved it. Alum Nicole, who was also known as Isabel Coates on #GossipGirl was #teamblairwaldorf all the way on the show, and so it's no surprise her and Leighton Meester are real life bffs. But, Nicole's journey in New York City leading up to getting booked for the show wasn't always so glamorous as she too hit the pavement in the city (like many of us) to work towards her career in the industry. She lived all over Manhattan, and one thing is for sure, she can officially call herself a New Yorker having lived in the city for 10+ years. Yes, she even lived on the infamous #UpperEastSide, which her show made so popular indefinitely. Oh, and you won't believe the chance encounter with Tyson Beckford she shared with me that may have catapulted her career as a model in the city. There's also a mic drop moment when she shares the favorite pastime of the #GossipGirl cast in New York City. Please subscribe, rate, and review Gossipnista wherever you listen to your podcasts. Linara Washington was born in the little town of Beaufort, SC to a beautiful Brazilian woman and an American son of a preacher man. Her mother spoke no English at the time, which has given Linara the added benefit of being fluent in Portuguese. She attended the prestigious University of Chicago where she started her courses as a Pre-med Biology major. But, as with all things that are meant to be, she soon found herself participating in the campus's theater productions and eventually took her MCAT money and purchased headshots, and did not tell her parents until graduation day that she was going to pursue acting. Linara's gutsy move proved to be the right one; she has had the pleasure of working at a number of Chicago's most acclaimed theaters including The Steppenwolf, Lookingglass, Northlight, and the Tony Award winning Victory Gardens. She has appeared in over 50 commercials nationally and internationally. A supporting role as Keisha, the cute and sassy receptionist in Barbershop 2 motivated her move to Los Angeles where she immediately landed recurring roles on American Dreams and E.R. Linara has since guest starred on hit shows including Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Madame Secretary, NCIS, Station 19, Code Black, CSI, The Defenders, Touch, Ghost Whisperer, and many others. Feature film credits include working with Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and acclaimed director Marc Forster on Stranger Than Fiction, and performing opposite Brad Pitt and James Gandolfini in Killing Them Softly. She also starred in the award winning, Kings of the Evening with Lynn Whitfield, Glynn Turman, and Tyson Beckford. Linara is currently working on Casting The Net, an original series for a new streaming service due to debut in November.
