EPISODE 136 | Incel-ation Some say there's a crisis of masculinity, or maybe it's just that there's still a lot of misogyny in our culture. Whatever the causes, one thing is clear – there are some young men out there who have difficulty interacting with women while also buying into the narrative that sex and female attention is somehow their right. Nadine Sparks and I have been gigging together since Yes All Women's in 2014 at Station 59. With multiple Comedy Festival shows under her belt, years of gigging and working behind the scenes at the Comedy Festival, Nadine is a Melbourne Comedy veteran. She's been killing it! She crushed in Geelong a few weeks ago, crushed hard! We talk about her comedy journey, varying her material from raunchy to teacher material, how she chooses what material where, the fickle nature of the comedy industry, and how to carve yourself a piece of the pie even if you aren't noticed and supported by the “comedy powers that be”. Her experience and expertise makes this conversation a must for anyone wanting to create a career in comedy in Melbourne. We discuss the shallow side of inclusion, when diversity trumps funny, and how middle-aged women can be so easily dismissed, in comedy as well as the rest of life. We get right into it, we get passionate – you'll love it!! Nadine Sparks Instagram | Facebook Pradeepa Timmermans Instagram | Facebook | pradeepa.com.au | pradeepa.deep@gmail.com

Marilyn Leder is a Melbourne comedian and University lecturer who teaches film & television, particularly comedy. We first met at Yes All Women's around 2015, and gigged there together for 2 years. After not seeing her for a number of years, she has burst back onto the scene with more passion and vibrancy than ever! She has a show in the upcoming Melbourne International Comedy Festival – The MILF Next Door. Cheeky what! I've seen a little snippet of her show, and it looks awesome! Here's the link to her show: https://www.comedyfestival.com.au/2022/shows/the-milf-next-door We discuss online dating, and what it's been like for her since her recent divorce, which is what her show is all about. It's fascinating to hear what it's like going back to dating in your 50s, particularly online dating. Marilyn also runs a comedy night, leading up to the Comedy Festival, every Tuesday at The Kind of Tonga in Elwood. It's a Tiki Bar and it's gorgeous! She's featuring local comedians who have a show in the Comedy Festival. Well worth checking out. Marilyn captured me with her story from the moment we started. I had no idea that she had studied film and television in the US, and that she worked on Seinfeld! Amazing! She also toured with Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story as performer/actor. All of this, while being a good Jewish girl! I had no idea of Marilyn's rich writing and performing background back when we gigged together at Yes! All Women's. I'm so glad we did this podcast so I could find out! Don't forget to go and see her show The MILF Next Door. Akemi Kawabata, Melbourne comedian, is originally from Osaka, Japan. Her style is cheeky & “naughty”. She's lots of fun to watch and hang out with. We discuss how she first came here 26 years ago on a working holiday visa, and knew very quickly that she wanted to stay here. She hardly spoke a word of English when she first arrived and studied hard to become an interpreter and work in Tourism. We talk about the Japanese drumming group she played with in Melbourne, connecting with people here, cultural differences between Japan and Australia, family violence and finding her voice in comedy after being silenced all her life in Japan. Akemi has overcome many obstacles to be where she is today. She rejected the only narrative given to her in Japan, made the break, took the risks and now lives the life that she wants to live here in Melbourne. Inspired by a friend here in Melbourne, who did open mic comedy, Akemi completed a stand up comedy course at the end of 2019. Not a great time to start comedy, in retrospect. Nonetheless, Akemi has been gigging regularly (when the venues have been open) and we met at Yes All Women's at The Highlander Bar in 2020. Off stage Akemi can be a bit introverted, so this podcast is a great opportunity to get to know her better. There sure are some Uncomfortable Truths in Akemi's story! I feel very privileged that Akemi was so honest with me. That's one thing about becoming a comedian – you become more comfortable talking about some brutal truths about yourself, especially if you can make them funny. I find 2 things happen for me when hearing about other people's challenges and difficulties from the past. Firstly, I have great respect for that person, because I see what they have had to overcome to be who they are. Secondly, I feel gratitude. Whether it's being able bodied, or not having suffered through family violence, I feel gratitude for things that I just always took for granted. I play you out with a song called Sleepy Seas because it's been hot lately and I just feel like calm, chilled track is the way to go at the moment. If you've enjoyed this episode, please give me a good rating at Apple or Spotify – really helps with the algorithms. Thanks folks. Enjoy the podcast.

Aarti Vincent, local Melbourne comedian. Aarti's catch phrase - "Yo yo bitch tits!" I first met Aarti on the open mic. comedy scene at the Yes All Women's comedy in early 2020. Aarti is originally from Delhi, India and has lived in Australia for about 15 years now. She tells us about her life back in Delhi, her transition to living here in Australia and how she got into comedy here in Melbourne. It's very interesting to hear her talk about her observations of Australia and Australians, from the point of view of someone who did not grow up here. She's already her MICF show “I Didn't Grow Up Doing Yoga”. That's amazing for someone who started performing comedy in 2018! We talk about being a Mum and a comedian, and what that entails. We also discuss how important it is to be at the start of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Guide! I love hearing about other people's lives in other countries. I like finding out in what ways we are the same, and in what ways we are different. I love hearing something that surprises me because we do it differently and I always took for granted that everyone in the world does it the same. I love how Aarti took an unconventional comedy path because she didn't know any different, and it has worked in her favour! It just shows that there is no “right” way to do anything! We all have our own path. Aarti will be performing in the 2022 MICF in a sketchy show by The Amazing Cannonball Flower. Aarti and I may well do a show in the 2022 MICF, so watch out for us. I play you out with the music you hear under my talking! It's called Groove Smoothie, by Cosmic Egg. Aarti mentioned that she likes this tune, so I thought I'd let you all hear the whole song. Enjoy! Welcome to Uncomfortable Truths Episode 5 with Kieran Butler. Kieran and I have been friends since 2013, when I started comedy. He ran an open mic. comedy room back then, under the banner of Free Comedy at Station 59 in Richmond, and I gigged there all the time. It was a safe place to start doing stand up comedy because even if you really died on stage, you knew that he would still give you more gigs. This is because if you signed up online, he would give you a gig, easy as that. He also put on Yes All Women's Comedy Night once a month at Station 59, and that was my favourite place to gig ever. He would do the admin, and introduce the MC at the start of the night, and then the night was ours. Yes All Women's was had a huge impact on me as a comedian just starting out, and I feel very fortunate that I was around to experience those years of Yes All Women's at Station 59. Freecomedy.com.au is Kieran's website and Kieran ran his comedy room under the free comedy model from Edinburgh. When Station 59 closed down, and after a short break, Kieran took free comedy to the Highlander Bar in the CBD in Melbourne. We've been gigging at the Highlander since 2017. Kieran is also an excellent musician, music producer and video clip producer. He recorded my song The Slut Song, and also shot and produced the video clip for the Slut Song. If you haven't seen the video clip for the Slut Song yet, please check it out on YouTube. We talked for over 3 hours, so I have split the podcast into 2 parts. In this first part we talk about how he started in comedy and music, the challenges he encountered, where we both were when we heard about 9/11, Pauline Hanson and how Australian politicians started playing the race card, and some very convincing John Howard impersonations. I hope you enjoy this podcast with Kieran Butler. Instagram | Facebook | www.pradeepa.com.au | pradeepa.deep@gmail.com

We’re breaking down the ways we fall into the time suck of domestic labor and how we can value and divide it differently.   Find out how much your domestic labor is worth! https://qz.com/work/1083411/this-calculator-makes-the-unpaid-work-women-do-visible/

By any measurement you wish to use, Feminism and its causes have never been more prominent than they are today. Over the past few years with the utilization of social media, attention on spousal abuse, sexual assault of all kinds, open misogyny, institutional bias, consent, behavioural norms and more have been broken open with the advent of the "hashtag". #WhyIStayed highlighting spousal abuse, #YesAllWomen and #EverydaySexism revealing misogyny, #TimesUp calling for real change now, #ImWithHer expanding to victims and their stories, #MeToo showing the proclivity of the issues and many more have forever changed the discourse around cultural standards. 2015 was a watershed year for Canada and its institutions in the global feminist awakening. The Jian Ghomeshi case. Sexual assault in Parliament. The demented behaviour directed at female politicians such as Catherine McKenna, Kathleen Wynne, Sandra Jansen and Rachel Notley to name a few. The discussion is here and it isn't going away, nor should it. But like all things, the conditions around the issues continue to change for many reasons. Controlling the message has never been more prominent than it is today, by all sides. To amend a famous quote, First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then they CO-OPT you when the tide has completely turned. There is nobody in public life these days that will not declare themselves a feminist. Not doing so is uncool, an invitation to be left outside of advancement with a likely high cost. But declaration is not action. Support is not change. The hypocrisy is becoming more nuanced. Julie Lalonde is an internationally recognized expert educator on violence against women, institutional gender-based bias, womens rights and activism. A winner of the Governor General's Award for her efforts, Julie returns to The View Up Here to discuss the progress, changes and co-option of Feminism in 2018 Canada.

Interview with Melbourne Comedian Mimi Shaheen, who first performed comedy on Valentine’s Day this year, and is off to an impressive start so far.  She performed her second gig in front of a large crowd at the Comic’s Lounge (which was a milestone as she'd frequented the venue as a punter from the age of 15).  Mimi has always loved comedy: she received various comedic theatre roles in high school (which earned her a spot at the Victorian College of the Arts), and has a very dark sense of humour.  Mimi had TWO gigs at the Comic’s Lounge this week, and will be performing at Yes All Women on 6 July, and Funny At The Brunny on 18 July. We discuss: The adventure of comedy speed dating in December 2015 which in a roundabout way led Mimi to attend the Comic’s Lounge workshop group, putting in lots of open-mic hours, the past pains which brought about her dark taste in comedy, comedy goals and wanting to “eat it alive”, Mimi’s experiences as a Social Worker/Family Worker, immigrating from Syria as a child and the challenges of fitting in, how bullying and other traumas have shaped her work so that she is a strong advocate for children, inter-generational problems and other issues in her work, Mimi’s techniques to maintain a healthy work-life balance, managing temper, Mimi’s super power, and her message of finding a way to laugh as it will assist with coping.

We have to take responsibility for ourselves and also recognize what we tolerate- our friends inappropriate jokes or behavior, the song lyrics we listen to, the movies we love, the people we idolize. And it's not just men, women need to recognize how they contribute  - gossiping, judging, and disrespecting other women can add to the overall problem. Todd gets on his soap box. There are numerous youtube clips, blogs, books articles helping and supporting the girls, but he is seeking more support for the boys. If we are going to make change, it can't be one sided.  Girl empowerment is essential, but so is supporting boys in expressing their emotion. If we focused on both simultaneously, real change could occur. They also discuss The Fault in our Stars and Malificient, two great summer movies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=642lKXC97c4 Other Resources: Click here to find Cathy's books The Self-Aware Parent 1 & 2, click here to find her blog, and click here to find her Chicago Parent column. Matt Abma from the Outer Leaf is recording with us. This episode is sponsored by Abma's laptop. Joe talks about listening to a boring morning radio about fishing. This gets Keith and Joe angry because they aren't on FM but Fishermen Fred is. Keith and Joe then talk about the #YesAllWomen hashtag from Memorial Day. They read some shooter's manifesto and realize he was a whiny dork who shouldn't have gotten laid. Keith and Joe then defend the hot men and women of Jones Beach who are too busy having sex to know who we fought in the Revolutionary War.

WARNING:  This may be a compilation of the absolute worst audio you’ve ever heard on this show.  Aside from the echo chamber that is the Animazement panel, my headset mic bumped my glasses for the ENTIRETY of the show, and all I can do is apologize and remind you that this is why podcasts are free :)  I promise to get new equipment soon. We did it again!  With the help of Sean Ryan and William Bloodworth, we rocked the stage late into the wee hours of Animazement 2014.  There were questions, buttons, a mic-hijacking, and sandwiches mentioned during our hour-long Mating Habits of the Modern Otaku: 2nd Date fan panel. As always, I forget that I’m technically the host and I leave Sean hanging and checking my phone (just to keep track of the time -  swear!), William is dressed as Kiruto and gets engaged to a small plushie Bulbasaur, and a rave happens elsewhere in the convention center that is so thunderous, the stage shakes the whole time.  Oh, and we answered questions about dating. Also in this show, I come up with some half-baked schemes for making money (patent pending) and Sean suggests we free all the caged autistic children from their neighborhood internment camps, only to make them available for cock-fighting style Yugio Tournaments - what a jerk!   At time marker 1:47, we come back after the panel audio to have a serious discussion regarding the recent tragic shootings and deaths in California.  The tables are less flipped, and more firmly pounded as I discuss why the hashtag #YesAllWomen is a great thing, if fully understood, and how misogyny is hurting everyone...most of all men who aren’t misogynists.   Links! http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/2014/05/_yesallwomen_in_the_wake_of_elliot_rodger_why_it_s_so_hard_for_men_to_recognize.html http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/05/27/your-princess-is-in-another-castle-misogyny-entitlement-and-nerds.html Mating Habits of the Modern Geek: Love and Dating within Your own Species - your comedy  source for relationship advice for geeks and nerds!
