This month's patreon episode is about: Raw milk, Instagram Face, and Manufactured Consent:  The relationship between the rise in homogeny, purity culture, and conservatism; and how we can reclaim our agency. The culture of “anti-cringe”, leads to a fear of standing out, which pushes us towards not just one type of look, but one type of ideology as well. This pipeline, which mass-produces conformity, is exactly what authoritarian systems crave. Purity politics and rising conservatism aren't just eroding individuality—they're manufacturing consent for control. When we dress, look, crave, and think the same, we become self-policing agents of the authoritarian state. They don't need to enforce rules; we do it for them. And when we do the work for them, we become much easier to control. “THE MASS MEDIA SERVE AS A SYSTEM FOR COMMUNICATING messages and symbols to the general populace. It is their function to amuse, entertain, and inform, and to inculcate individuals with the values, beliefs, and codes of behavior that will integrate them into the institutional structures of the larger society. In a world of concentrated wealth and major conflicts of class interest, to fulfil this role requires systematic propaganda.”These 5 filters (ownership, revenue, sourcing, flak, and fear) ensure that the media marginalizes alternative viewpoints and reinforces the status quo and though they were talking about television media, news, advertisements, and movies, much of the same implications can be applied to the media we consume on the internet. In a lot of ways, the internet didn't just continue the propaganda model—it optimized it.Edward S. Sometimes called "the father of modern linguistics", Chomsky is also a major figure in analytic philosophy and one of the founders of the field of cognitive science. He is a laureate professor of linguistics at the University of Arizona and an institute professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Among the most cited living authors, Chomsky has written more than 150 books on topics such as linguistics, war, and politics. Ideologically, he aligns with anarcho-syndicalism and libertarian socialism. Born to Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants in Philadelphia, Chomsky developed an early interest in anarchism from alternative bookstores in New York City. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania. During his postgraduate work in the Harvard Society of Fellows, Chomsky developed the theory of transformational grammar for which he earned his doctorate in 1955. That year he began teaching at MIT, and in 1957 emerged as a significant figure in linguistics with his landmark work Syntactic Structures, which played a major role in remodeling the study of language. From 1958 to 1959 Chomsky was a National Science Foundation fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study. He created or co-created the universal grammar theory, the generative grammar theory, the Chomsky hierarchy, and the minimalist program. Chomsky also played a pivotal role in the decline of linguistic behaviorism, and was particularly critical of the work of B. F. Skinner. An outspoken opponent of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, which he saw as an act of American imperialism, in 1967 Chomsky rose to national attention for his anti-war essay "The Responsibility of Intellectuals". Becoming associated with the New Left, he was arrested multiple times for his activism and placed on President Richard Nixon's list of political opponents. While expanding his work in linguistics over subsequent decades, he also became involved in the linguistics wars. In collaboration with Edward S. Herman, Chomsky later articulated the propaganda model of media criticism in Manufacturing Consent, and worked to expose the Indonesian occupation of East Timor. His defense of unconditional freedom of speech, including that of Holocaust denial, generated significant controversy in the Faurisson affair of the 1980s. Chomsky's commentary on the Cambodian genocide also generated controversy. Since retiring from active teaching at MIT, he has continued his vocal political activism, including opposing the 2003 invasion of Iraq and supporting the Occupy movement. An anti-Zionist, Chomsky considers Israel's treatment of Palestinians to be worse than South African-style apartheid, and criticizes U.S. support for Israel. Chomsky is widely recognized as having helped to spark the cognitive revolution in the human sciences, contributing to the development of a new cognitivistic framework for the study of language and the mind. Chomsky remains a leading critic of U.S. foreign policy, contemporary capitalism, U.S. involvement and Israel's role in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, and mass media. __________________________________________________ Buy me a coffee Audio source Noam Chomsky - Wikipedia Internet Archive --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theunadulteratedintellect/support

Politics, violence & propaganda; what an awful mix.'Manufacturing Consent' by Edward S. Herman & Noam Chomsky explains the propaganda model of communications, which explains why mass media shows an overall biased view. They describe the 5 mechanisms that lead to heavy filtering of information before going over examples from the Vietnam War to Latin America politics. It's a book that made me super angry, distressed, disgusted and depressed. Has really reinforced my philosophy against violence/coercion and also my detestation of politics/mass media.Huge props to Deezlaughs for supporting the show, I really appreciate it!Timeline:(0:00) - Intro(1:37) - Initial Impression(3:58) - Plot/Style(6:44) - Quote 1(9:36) - Themes/Questions(16:09) - Quote 2(19:40) - Authors & Extras(22:20) - Quote 3(26:47) - Summary(31:41) - Boostagram Lounge(34:08) - Value 4 ValueValue 4 Value Support:Boostagram: https://www.meremortalspodcast.com/supportPaypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/meremortalspodcastConnect with Mere Mortals:Website: https://www.meremortalspodcast.com/Discord: https://discord.gg/jjfq9eGReUTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/meremortalspodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/meremortalspodcast/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@meremortalspodcastConnect With Cole McCormick (Voice Actor):Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/colemccormick1Podcast: https://fountain.fm/show/6705669

Spirituality has profoundly influenced some of the greatest minds. We delve into Steve Jobs and his profound connection to Eastern Philosophy and mysticism. Drawing from Walter Isaacson's biography "Steve Jobs" (2011), we discuss Jobs' transformative journey to India and his encounters with figures like Neem Karoli Baba, revered by Ram Dass (formerly Dr. Richard Alpert) in his 1971 book "Be Here Now". Speaking of luminaries, we explore the philosophical messages shared by Alan Watts, Ram Dass, and Yogananda. Each of these spiritual figures has left an indelible mark, and their teachings, especially Yogananda's "Autobiography of a Yogi" (1946), have been instrumental in the West's understanding of Eastern spiritual practices. Switching gears to mass media, we discuss its potential manipulative nature. Inspired by Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman's "Manufacturing Consent" (1988), Caley and Gabriella share a real-life anecdote from their media days that reinforces the theory of media as a tool of elite control. Carl Zha brings us his knowledge of China, the US, and global political economic relations. He also brings his exquisite sense of the absurd.Exactly one year ago, Carl and Steve recorded their marathon discussion of Chinese history, resulting in three episodes about Mao. This time, they have Taiwan in their sights. Just like Joe Biden.Official US policy on Taiwan is just ambiguous enough to allow plenty of shenanigans, despite recognizing “one China” since the 1970s.“We know how the Cold War 1.0 played out. We isolated the Soviet Union and Soviet bloc. We cut off all the trade and then eventually the Soviet Union collapsed. This is how we won the Cold War 1.0. So we'll just play the same playbook to win Cold War 2.0 against China. But this is crazy talk because China is nothing like Soviet Union of the yester years; China is the world's largest trading economy. It has trade not just with United States and Europe but also has a huge trade with the global south. So, what the US is doing in its attempted decoupling from China, actually it's cutting US off from the rest of the world.”The United States has gone from being a major industrial power to being a service economy with a neglected, crumbling infrastructure. China is building economic relationships around the world “without tanks and nuclear arms and planes,” says Steve. “China has been working in a much more cooperative way and people are lining up to say, ‘sign me up. I don't want the US having its hands on me.'”The conversation covers the economic and political implications of this reversal of fortune. With their massive exports to the US, China has accumulated vast amounts of US dollars. The 2008 financial crisis supplied impetus for China to seek new uses for their dollars reserves. In this episode of his "Thinking Out Loud" series, Double D uses a memorandum from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, coupled with other sources, to examine the nature and breadth of U.S. technological and cultural hegemony and how this hegemony relates to the American Empire as a whole.Jumping in to the video, Double D recaps some of the discussion from the previous two episodes, before starting an analysis of the Plaza Accords and the Fairchild Agreement. Citing an article from Los Angeles Times, printed in 1987, he outlines how Japan was outcompeting the United States semi-conductor and microchip companies. A realization that lead U.S. corporations, in conjunction with the Defense Department and the Intelligence Community, to hobble Japanese financial markets as well as their high-tech industries; forcing them to open up their markets to U.S. industrial competition as well as financial speculation.Double D also outlines the various other ways the United States engages in protectionism. He insists that the "free-market" is an egregious lie, and shows how increasingly U.S. tech firms amount to nothing more than financialized conglomerates. Using Apple as an example, he explains how Apple does not manufacture products, provide research and development, or ship their own products; rather third party corporations do all the productive work, while Apple Corporation receives "rent" on their intellectual property.Double D goes on to explain how the same scheme used to hobble Japanese competition is being weaponized once again in the ongoing trade war with China. He highlights the recent barring or condemnation of Chinese firms such as Huawei or TikTok. He scoffs at rhetoric around this trade war, where the U.S. claims "the protection of democracy" or ensuring "national security" around these bans, noting that the situation really constitutes protectionism for American corporations which are increasingly no longer innovative or competitive on the global stage. He points out that this "high-tech economic war" has higher stakes for the U.S. Empire beyond controlling global markets, acknowledging that much of the recent "Chip War" rests on the fact that U.S. military hegemony is rooted in having access to cheap microchips as well as other tech commodities which are essential for military hardware and AI.Moving on, Double D attempts to provide some analysis which shows the conjunction between U.S. technological hegemony and its global surveillance state; noting the ties between the Intelligence Community and Tech Giants such as Twitter, Facebook, and Google. He goes on to outline the history of the U.S. surveillance state, noting the revelations brought about by Edward Snowden, as well as recent leaks which show that the United States has been spying on its European Allies, including French Presidents and Chancellor Angela Merkel.Ending the discussion on technological hegemony, Double D begins to analyze cultural hegemony. He begins by describing the "culture industrial complex." That is the relationships between Hollywood, Mass Media, the Intelligence Community, and the political class; and how this industrial complex is used to instill "cultural hegemony." Next he plays a brief video outlining Antonio Gramsci's theory of cultural hegemony, which explains how the dominant ideology of the ruling class is trickled through stories and images to become a "common-sense", that the majority of people will never question. Double D relates this to U.S. political culture as well, explaining how the same process, the same "spectacle" is played out via mass media. He ends the video by playing a brief explainer-visualizer that outline the principles of Noam Chomsky's "Manufacturing Consent", which shows on the mass media corporations act as a filter through which all political discourse must be sieved.Don't forget to like, subscribe, and comment; together we can beat the algorithm

How does the media really work? They want us to think they are fearlessly challenging power. In reality, they are subservient to power. They want us to think that the media is a "self-correcting" system. In reality, they perpetuate whatever errors are useful to their masters. In this episode, I look at the "Propaganda Model" as set forth by Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky in their classic media analysis, "Manufacturing Consent". In that model, five filters govern the quality, quantity, extent and frequency of coverage given to any particular issue. Those filters are: 1) the ownership of the media 2) the sponsors of the media 3) allegiance to powerful sources 4) something called "flack" and 5) the religion of anti-communism, and other powerful ideologies that control the public discourse. If we are to solve the problem of climate change and other important environmental problems, we must understand who shapes news coverage and how it all works.

Raha Jorjani is an Immigration Defense Attorney at California's first public defender Immigration Representation Unit. Because our immigration law is founded on the principle that deportation is a civil issue and not a criminal proceeding which, there are few immigration specific public defender units. This denies millions of people the basic right of public defense.    This episode covers the ideals of America and how our government is willfully disregarding its responsibility to help the people fleeing the countries we have destabilized. Raha shares her personal experience working with clients who may appear like criminals on paper but are often victims of wider circumstances enacted by our own government. To tell their story without those crucial details is not just dishonest but dehumanizing.     Raha hopes that by sharing these stories and making Americans aware of the reality of what immigrants go through, just to have the opportunity to plead their case, we can break down these antiquated systems. Her office is the first of its kind and is being replicated across the country, hopefully to one day become the standard. America is founded on the principle that all men are created equal so it is up to us to ensure that includes the right to due process, evidentiary hearings and access to counsel. Without these standards of human treatment we are failing as Americans.      Key Takeaways: [7:27] Raha's journey into the role of removal defense attorney [11:00] Providing seamless representation from one system to the next [12:40] The distinction between criminal versus civil protections [19:00] How the needs of non-citizens differ from citizens within criminal proceedings [25:30] The difficulty comes in conveying the complicated information accurately to the client [30:00] How policies have changed through each administration [39:00] The Department of Homeland Security is using detention as a litigation tool [46:10] The burden to prove why you should be given the opportunity to remain in America [50:00] Offering asylum for our benefit and not on principle [53:50] Walter's case: The consistent failings of our legal system  [60:30] The opportunity we have to make a positive change   Guest: Raha Jorjani, Deputy Public Defender and Supervising Supervising Immigration Defense Attorney, Alameda County Public Defender Office   Resources: Alameda Public Defender Office Immigration Unit https://publicdefender.acgov.org/Immigration.page Patel v Garland https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/596/20-979/ Fong Yue Ting v. They don't have to justify why they imprisoned you. You have to justify why you should be free. So you have to prove why you're not a danger to the community, you have to prove that you're not a flight risk and Hunter, that's people who are eligible for bond.”  [33:40]   “The power of detention is ultimately used as a litigation tool by the Department of Homeland Security. This is one of the only areas where, if you win, you stay in.”[39:30]   “When people end up in the deportation system, it is almost always after they have been dealt with by the criminal legal system. So even to the extent that people believe in the criminal legal system and the need for accountability and punishment; the double irony is that these folks have already been through that system, so they've already served their time.” [43:40]   “Our relationships with countries define how we view people. So, if we don't agree with a certain country's position, we tend to welcome people from those countries because we basically want to further entrench the idea that what's happening there is bad. Whereas other people from other countries could be facing similar types of persecution or violence and we have very many closed door policies.”  [50:24]   Contact Hunter Parnell: hwparnell@publicdefenseless.com Instagram Twitter www.publicdefenseless.com

For this episode we welcome Noam Chomsky and Vijay Prashad back to the podcast. This is our second conversation on The Withdrawal: Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and the Fragility of U.S. Power. As we noted in our previous conversation we weren't able to get to all of our questions in the first discussion, but Noam and Vijay were generous enough to agree to record a part 2. We recorded this conversation on September 2nd, which is interesting because some information on the war in Ukraine had been revealed between our two conversations and we get into that in discussion. We will link the article they reference in the show notes. This conversation, begins with discussion of the Tet Offensive and Noam facing potential trial for his resistance during the US war in Vietnam. Vijay talks about Noam's piece “The Responsibility of Intellectuals.”  From there we get into discussion about “the Pentagon System,” and the military industrial complex.  They both share some thoughts on Manufacturing Consent and the role of the media, and discuss a few examples of how this functions. Talk about imperialism with regards to resources and power. And Noam discusses how NATO and the Pentagon rebranded their purposes after the Cold War. From there we get into the invention of “humanitarian intervention,” and how concepts of human rights and genocide have been manipulated by the US despite US's total lack of accountability within the frameworks of international law.  We close with some discussion on how to recompose and reconstitute movements in the imperial core, against imperialism and toward better horizons. Both this conversation and our previous conversation with Noam and Vijay are based on questions developed on their book The Withdrawal: Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and the Fragility of U.S. Power. Which is on sale now and we definitely recommend it. We will also link the previous discussion the authors had with Guerrilla History that we reference in the episode. If you don't listen to Guerrilla History check them out, we really like the work they do and hopefully you will as well. We're down a few patrons this month. We're working to maintain the sustainability of the podcast in these difficult times. To that end we have a goal of adding 25 patrons this month. You can become one for as little as $1 a month or $10.80 per year. In Part 2 of our series on Ukraine, we pick up with the history of Ukraine starting with the aftermath of the Maidan Coup in 2014. The post-coup government in Ukraine with hand-picked Prime Minister Yatsenyuk cozied up to the EU, IMF, and US and enacted a law targeting the Russian language. These actions led to widescale protests in predominantly Russian speaking areas of Ukraine. We explain how the story we hear in the western media has been mostly propaganda and that Crimea was not invaded by Russia, but voted by general ballot to join Russia. The same is true of the independent republics of Donetsk and Luhansk who held general referendums to breakaway from Ukraine after the coup government launched a bloody civil war targeting these regions in the Donbass. And while Ukrainian neo-Nazi battalions carried out this war in the Donbass, then Vice-President Joe Biden was working closely with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to impose IMF structural adjustment programs on Ukraine. These programs were a direct war on the working class and only served to enrich corporate interests. One of these corporations, oil and gas company Burisma, appointed Hunter Biden to their board after Joe Biden visited Ukraine. The Poroshenko/Biden friendship is one rife with corruption. The current proxy war in Ukraine was set up by the Maidan coup, orchestrated by Jake Sullivan, Victoria Nuland, and Joe Biden under an Obama presidency. The actions of Joe Biden under the Obama administration make it clear that this was set up to be continued under Hillary after 2016, though the strategy changed when Hillary was defeated. Russiagate was created to prepare the public for this war against Russia. The media-military-industrial-complex is complicit in creating this tragedy, which could have been avoided if the US had just left Ukraine alone. Related Materials 2010 Ukrainian presidential election -To give you an idea of the historical political divide in Ukraine, here is an article on the electoral split during the 2010 national election between Yanukovych and Tymoshenko. Yanukovych was democratically elected, even though he was heavily opposed by NATO and the West. This map shows how the Eastern regions of Ukraine, including the Donbass, Crimea, and Odessa (where a majority speak and identify as Russian) went heavily for Yanukovich while the more Western, EU-affiliated regions of Ukraine voted for Tymoshenko.
