Guests featured in this episode: Nadia Urbinati, the Kyriakos Tsakopoulos Professor of Political Theory at Columbia University. She is also a permanent visiting professor at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa (Italy), and has taught at Bocconi University Milan (Italy), Sciences Po Paris (France) and the UNICAMP University (Brazil). Her main fields of expertise are modern and contemporary political thought and the democratic, as well as anti-democratic traditions. GLOSSARYWhat is the People's Party?(13:05 or p.4 in the transcript)The People's Party: (also known as the Populist Party) was an important political party in the United States of America during the late nineteenth century. The People's Party originated in the early 1890s. It was organized in Kansas, but the party quickly spread across the United States. It drew its members from Farmers' Alliances, the Grange, and the Knights of Labor. Originally, the Populists did not form a national organization, preferring to gain political influence within individual states. The Populist Party consisted primarily of farmers unhappy with the Democratic and Republican Parties. The Populists believed that the federal government needed to play a more active role in the American economy by regulating various businesses, especially the railroads. In particular, the Populists supported women's suffrage the direct election of United States Senators. They hoped that the enactment women's suffrage and the direct election of senators would enable them to elect some of their members to political office. Populists also supported a graduated income tax, government ownership of the railroads, improved working conditions in factories, immigration restrictions, an eight-hour workday, the recognition of unions, and easier access to credit. source What is the Reconstruction?(13:10 or p.4 in the transcript)Reconstruction: in U.S. history, the period (1865–77) that followed the American Civil War and during which attempts were made to redress the inequities of slavery and its political, social, and economic legacy and to solve the problems arising from the readmission to the Union of the 11 states that had seceded at or before the outbreak of war. Long portrayed by many historians as a time when vindictiveRadical Republicans fastened Black supremacy upon the defeated Confederacy, Reconstruction has since the late 20th century been viewed more sympathetically as a laudable experiment in interracial democracy. Reconstruction witnessed far-reaching changes in America's political life. At the national level, new laws and constitutionalamendments permanently altered the federal system and the definition of American citizenship. In the South, a politically mobilized Black community joined with white allies to bring the Republican Party to power, and with it a redefinition of the responsibilities of government. source What is austerity?(16:23 or p.4 in the transcript)Austerity: (also called austerity measures) is a set of economic policies, usually consisting of tax increases, spending cuts, or a combination of the two, used by governments to reduce budget deficits. Austerity measures can in principle be used at any time when there is concern about government expenditures exceeding government revenues. Often, however, governments delay resorting to such measures because they are usually politically unpopular. Instead, governments tend to rely on other means—for example, deficit financing, which involves borrowing from financial markets—to mitigate budget deficits in the short run, a decision that usually necessitates the adoption of harsher austerity measures in the long run. source What is universal suffrage?(18:32 or p.5 in the transcript)Universal suffrage: generally understood as the right to vote for political representatives conferred to almost all adult citizens or residents, regardless of their social status, property, knowledge, religion, race, gender, or other similar qualifications. The principle of universal suffrage, together with principles of equal, free, secret, and direct suffrage, present fundamental principles of elections common to all democracies around the world. Universal suffrage is one of two historically developed concepts of the suffrage—consisting of the right to vote and the right to stand for election. The other one, a concept contrary to universal suffrage, can be denominated as so-called limited suffrage. The concept of limited suffrage, preferred until the nineteenth century, was based on the exclusion of a large number of people from the suffrage. It was done based on social status, property, knowledge, religion, race, or gender. source Democracy in Question? is brought to you by:• Central European University: CEU• The Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy in Geneva: AHCD• The Podcast Company: Novel Follow us on social media!• Central European University: @CEU• Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy in Geneva: @AHDCentreSubscribe to the show. I explain the three universal aspects of emotions, the reality of right-brain versus left-brain personalities, and how the roots of adult attachment are also grounded in specific aspects of puberty. I review what factors determine when puberty starts and ends, and the role of oxytocin and other chemicals in controlling how we perceive and remember others. As always, I refer to various practical tools including new tools for understanding and predicting our emotions before they occur, and neurochemicals that shape human connection. After nearly a year of virtual learning for most Henrico students, it may feel like the format is here to stay forever. And it just might be. Henrico Schools Superintendent Amy Cashwell indicated this week that school system officials are evaluating the ways in which they can use virtual learning in a post-pandemic world – perhaps even on a full-time basis for some students. Addressing the Henrico Board of Supervisors and School Board during a joint work session Feb. 23, Cashwell suggested that virtual options could help close learning gaps for some students and reduce travel time for others. Yoga is the union of energies. Ordinarily, our energies are scattered, all over the place. When we achieve yoga, all energies get organized and like a flame point towards one, upwards, waiting to meet the divine. That divine meeting is liberation, moksha, nirvana, enlightenment. In order for yoga to happen, the mind has become silent. All modification in 'Chitta' has to cease. ====== Join me on this transformative journey into Yoga within 30 mins DAILY LIVE meditation sessions on my website: https://www.dhyanse.com/live/ Each session is unique, starts with a 5-10 min discourse, followed by 20 min Guided Meditation. It is not ‘academically sophisticated’ to hold to the inspiration of Scripture. Some people argue that believing a priori that the Bible is true and without error in anything it teaches is an ‘unintellectual’ position. It is true that with a Christological starting point, we give up any appearance of an ‘impartial, academic’ viewpoint. Yet there are very good reasons to hold to the infallibility of Scripture, as we will argue in this article. On this episode @papaviitz joins me to explore the complexity of addictions and the biological, psychological, sociological, spiritual factors that can protect us or put us at risk. . Vito is studying addictions and mental health with me at Centennial College and grew up in the Riverdale community in Toronto, giving him a lot of experience seeing the effects of different socioeconomic levels on addictions and mental health around the city. We also discuss the various recovery goals that individuals may have (harm reduction VS abstinence VS reducing frequency). The “stages of change” are broken down with which strategies work best for supporting someone in each stage of their goals. We also explore the neuroscience of addiction and what risk factors we can and can’t control. . Many topics are covered from how trauma and mental health disorders relate to addiction, various forms of addiction, why certain substances are more addictive than others; even breaking down why substance misuse is often a form of relief from various symptoms of suffering or trauma. . At the end I also add a small bit about the “Bell Let’s Talk” camping summarizing the pros and cons while adding in a few ways they can be less ignorant and more effective at opening the dialogue around the realities and darkness of various mental health struggles. We will be doing another episode diving deeper into these topics soon as one hour is not enough to cover the complexity of addiction! . Instagram @jake_flightofthoughts Facebook The Psychedelic Society of First Responders and Emergency Workers * This podcast is uncensored and covers many topics considered “taboo” or difficult for some individuals. We do not condone any illegal activities, as this is a platform for harm reduction and open-dialogue. Although the ideas are mostly evidence-based and honest, the lines of reality and comedy may be blurred at times...this is your trigger warning!
Crowds, Selves, and Various Forms of Detachment While we can’t know each other completely, we’re obsessed with guessing and modern literature provides numerous examples. Jesse interviews Dr. John Plotz, Professor of Victorian Literature at Brandeis University and author of “The Crowd” (2000), “Portable Property” (2008) and “Semi-Detached” (2017). For Plotz, crowds, keepsakes, politics, and novels represent some of the ways we grapple with how our own inner lives relate to those of others. We can also find ourselves estranged from ourselves during an aesthetic experience. Jesse and John discuss crowds, Baudelaire, the political dimensions of Victorian literature, public and private spaces, mementos, cave paintings, intention, how we give private objects meanings, our relationship with history, the line between reality and fiction, the psychology of the modern novel, and finally, H.G. Wells and why science fiction is so cool. For this week we’re talking about abuse and how its various forms are normalized in society. From the fact that counseling and psychiatry have racist/sexist/ableist views baked in the cake to gaslighting; abusive behavior is normalized and very often marginalized people are the ones who bear the brunt. The challenge was to create a track using at least some of the sounds from sample packs, along with a few additional sounds such as bass, percussion from the artists own collection. Clicking on info will show you the original artist who created the sample pack used. If you want to take a listen to the original samples, you can download the packs from the link below: Sample packs can be downloaded from here: kahvi.micksam7.com/kahvi417_forms_samplepacks.zip'
