From performing at Glastonbury, Kendal Calling and Y Not Festival to recording a brand new EP produced by Joe Cross (Louis Tomlinson, Courteeners, Hurts…), Nadia Sheikh's 2022 has been full of highlights. Now armed with a new set of songs, she's set to continue building on the momentum generated by her live shows in 2022 and her previous EP "Undefined" produced by Brett Shaw (FOALS, Florence and the Machine, Lady Gaga...), which received widespread support from the likes of BBC 6 Music, BBC Introducing, Radio X, Radio 3 (Spain), CLASH, Line of Best Fit and Fresh On The Net. The British / Spanish artist, who writes and records in both English and Spanish, has toured extensively throughout Europe with previous highlights encompassing Isle of Wight Festival, FIB (Benicassim Festival), Spanish national television (Los Conciertos de Radio 3), and supporting Stereophonics across 19 dates of their 2020 European tour, including sold-out Manchester Arena and Cardiff Arena shows. Nadia started the new year releasing "The Shadows" and "Quiet", the first singles of her upcoming EP. We go across the pond to find out what it's like to hit like a girl and we're talking about hitting drums. Our guest is Samantha Lubin a busy Drummer, Percussionist, and Drum Teacher based in North London, UK. Samantha's main gig currently is playing percussion with various artists and bands. She most recently performed at the World Cup in Qatar and performs internationally regularly as a session percussionist. Samantha trained at Paul McCartney's school, LIPA, and graduated with a BA (HONS) Degree in Music. Before her degree, she studied for the Diploma of Popular Music and Sound Technology again at LIPA. Upon Graduating, Samantha was awarded the Zildjian Prize which is presented annually to one drummer every year in recognition of their hard work and dedication to their instrument. Samantha's original band “BABYTEETH” was part of the ISAWITFIRST music campaign and was the main support act for Adam Ant at The Roundhouse in Camden. Festivals they have played at include Kendal Calling, Neighbourhood Festival, and Live at Leeds. In 2022 Samantha was in the final 25 drummers in her age category in the Hit Like A Girl Contest and she came 2nd in the UK Territory. She is currently working on the sister project “Drumming Connects Us” as the talent coordinator. This year she will be acting as a judge for part of the contest. Samantha is currently endorsed by London Drum Stick Company and Primas Custom Drums, specifically for snare drums. Oh, and there’s one more thing we do on Wednesdays... we drop another episode of On Repeat.This week we're speaking to Jodi M Burn (they/them pronouns), who is a UK based musician, educator and event organiser which a keen eye on representation and breaking down barriers.As a musician they have played drums and bass on studio recordings with bands such as Colour Me Wednesday, Personal Best and BYENAR. They've also travelled the world playing internatonal tours in Japan, Indonesia and Europe and at festivals such as Kendal Calling and Madrid Popfest, plus have supported the likes of Propagandhi, Lemuria and Juliana Hatfield. Phew!As an educator they have taught music privately and run group music workshops for beginners for 5 years - in quarantine they were doing zoom drum lessons! They have also volunteered as an LGBTQ+ youth worker, and worked alongside Trans-led charity Gendered Intelligence, and worked with The Proud Trust, the home of LGBT+ youth (plus other identities such as asexual, intersex and questioning).As an organiser they have co-run First Timers Fest, organised DIY shows in London and Brighton and co-ran Synth Punk Fest at DIY Space for London for 3 years. Jodi started with Girls Rock London as a volunteer Drum Tutor and Band Coach in the 2018 and 2019 camps and has since joined the organising team to focus on programme delivery, international collaboration and trans inclusivity.Recent musical releases played on by Jodi include the self titled debut EP by hardcore trans duo Byenary and the single 'Nannas on a Rampage' by glam-drag band Thigh High.In this episode discuss Jodi's portfolio music career with reference to DIY pop punk and some food for thought regarding music lesson privilege. At this years Kendal Calling music festival, as i was walking back to the car on my last day. I took a look around me, walked though stranded tents , blow up air beds, more rubbish and plastic than you can ever imagine and i said to myself " Do we really deserve to have such a beautiful planet" we are animals !! No actually we are not animals, animals would never treat this planet like we do....... I watch grown adults throw empty cans, plastic pint glasses , food cartons , randomly on the floor just because they couldn't be bothered to walk 4 steps to the bin. I watched men and women piss against trees, tents , fences, not caring about anyone else ... IS THIS THE WORLD I WANT TO LIVE IN, BRING MY CHILDREN UP IN? Peace be with you TSP listeners. It's a special Sunday release of the podcast. Last weekend we were at Kendal Calling festival. It was the Friday, before the entire site turned into brown shiny slime. We were set up in Tim Peaks diner along with a couple of hundred tightly packed pals. The extra security was in place and we all awaited the arrival of some real funk royalty. When Nile Rodgers rolled up, I don't think any of us could believe it was happening but we had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with him and being regaled by his stories of Grace Jones, Sesame Street, guitar technique, getting sacked by Shakira and many others.You'll definitely know at least ten songs with Nile's fingerprints on em. He's written and produced for the likes of Madonna, Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Duran Duran, Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams, The B-52s, as well as his own incredible Chic project. The guy is an absolute boss and we're honoured to have him sit down with us. Big thanks to all those that made this happen at Kendal Calling and the illustrious question askers. Hiyer. It's the British summer (apparently) and that means it's festival season. We went up to the beautiful Lowther deer park, got our culturally appropriative head-dresses on and recorded two banging episodes, which means it's double-dose week on the Two Shot Podcast.
