Escuchar audio

Interview with Saint Agnes

We had the pleasure of interviewing Saint Agnes over Zoom video! If there's a single word to define Saint Agnes, it's committed. Two words? Fully committed.Hailing from the UK, this ferocious four-strong outfit are all about honest lyrics, intense vocal performances (from Kitty A. Austen), plus rage-fuelled music intended to give a voice to those closer to the fringe than the centre. As much gang as band, Saint Agnes seek to empower those who've been battered and bruised yet refuse to lie down, and it's a thread that runs deep within ‘Bloodsuckers' – SA's first album for Spinefarm, the follow-up to 2019's ‘Welcome To Silvertown', issued on the band's own label. In addition to ‘… Silvertown', Saint Agnes have released a number of singles, videos and EPs, embarked on headline tours in both the UK and Europe, and appeared at a host of festivals, including Download, 2000 Trees, Isle of Wight and Kendal Calling; but it's now, in 2023, that they've fully hit their stride, confirming a spring / summer European run with Monster Magnet, welcoming new bassist Ryan Brown into the fold (replacing Ben Chernett) and defining precisely what it means to be a fully paid-up member of the Death or Glory Gang. One thing's for sure, it's got nothing to do with rule-books or playing it safe…From the title track (also lead single / video) onwards, ‘Bloodsuckers' is a genre-jumping body of work, taking in elements of metal, punk, industrial and grunge, without being bound by any specific style; the 11 tracks here come straight from the source, largely self-produced and mixed (NIN collaborator Sean Beavan lends his production and mixing skills to future single / video, ‘Follow You'), and this self-contained approach provides an extra emotional weight throughout, with doom trap provocateur andKerrang! cover artist Mimi Barks further fuelling the chaos on the short, sharp shock that is ‘Body Bag'.Created in the months following the unexpected and untimely death of Kitty's mother, ‘Bloodsuckers' explores a number of themes, including mental illness, pent-up rage, undying love and, of course, grief; from the trash-metal howl into the night that is ‘Bloodsuckers' right through to broken ballad, ‘This Is Not The End', a poignant reflection of Kitty's still-raw emotions, this is a call to outsiders everywhere.Concludes Kitty: “Creating this album gave me a reason to get to my feet at a time when I really wasn't sure if I could. I've tried to put everything I've been feeling into it, all the pain, the rage, the grief, even the unexpected moments of beauty and belief. I hope it makes you feel less alone. I hope it makes you feel bigger, badder and stronger. We might be damaged but that doesn't mean we're worthless. This is a record for the defeated, the crushed. We might be broken but that doesn't mean we're not whole. Bloodsuckers forever, Saint Agnes forever.”We want to hear from you! Channeling influences from The Specials to Rage Against the Machine, via Jurassic 5, this band always leaves a lasting impression with their high-octane live show. ‘The BTeam' have performed nationwide as well as abroad and are particularly at home in front of a festival audience. Notable appearances include Soundwave, Boomtown, Kendal Calling and Moovin, giving the band the opportunity to prove themselves alongside the likes of Mr. Scruff, Lee ‘Scratch' Perry and Riot Jazz. After whatever 2020 turned out to be, 2021 will be better, with a new EP in the works, a tour (whenever that can happen), and hopefully loads of festivals! The boys still managed to get a couple of gigs, doing a ‘live' streamed set for NEXUS festival at the height of lockdown, as well as numerous lockdown videos to keep the spirits up. At this years Kendal Calling music festival, as i was walking back to the car on my last day. I took a look around me, walked though stranded tents , blow up air beds, more rubbish and plastic than you can ever imagine and i said to myself " Do we really deserve to have such a beautiful planet" we are animals !! No actually we are not animals, animals would never treat this planet like we do....... I watch grown adults throw empty cans, plastic pint glasses , food cartons , randomly on the floor just because they couldn't be bothered to walk 4 steps to the bin. I watched men and women piss against trees, tents , fences, not caring about anyone else ... IS THIS THE WORLD I WANT TO LIVE IN, BRING MY CHILDREN UP IN? On this episode my friend Jeff Austin comes in to talk about how he is trying to do his own little bit to save our planet. I invite you to pop over to my web page @ www.marcjeffreypodcastshow.simplesite.com and also download the Voxer app on your phone and come find me and have a chat www.voxer.com

Peace be with you TSP listeners. It's a special Sunday release of the podcast. Last weekend we were at Kendal Calling festival. It was the Friday, before the entire site turned into brown shiny slime. We were set up in Tim Peaks diner along with a couple of hundred tightly packed pals. The extra security was in place and we all awaited the arrival of some real funk royalty. When Nile Rodgers rolled up, I don't think any of us could believe it was happening but we had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with him and being regaled by his stories of Grace Jones, Sesame Street, guitar technique, getting sacked by Shakira and many others. You'll definitely know at least ten songs with Nile's fingerprints on em. He's written and produced for the likes of Madonna, Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Duran Duran, Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams, The B-52s, as well as his own incredible Chic project. The guy is an absolute boss and we're honoured to have him sit down with us. Big thanks to all those that made this happen at Kendal Calling and the illustrious question askers. Hiyer. It's the British summer (apparently) and that means it's festival season. We went up to the beautiful Lowther deer park, got our culturally appropriative head-dresses on and recorded two banging episodes, which means it's double-dose week on the Two Shot Podcast. First up, in our usual Thursday morning slot, we have Sheffield's own power couple, John and Laura McClure from Reverend And The Makers. We've spoken to Jon before on #TSP051 but we thought we'd invite him back on with his partner Laura to discuss the ins and outs of being a band wife and husband, Rev-enders, tour decompression techniques, penis reviews and a bunch of other stuff. Reverend and the Makers are always out on tour soon so make sure you go and get a ticket and keep an eye out for the forthcoming 2-disc 'best-of', out soon on Cooking Vinyl records. This is a chat from down at the lakeside bar at Kendal Calling festival (forgive the distant drums). Hope you enjoy and we'll be back on Sunday for a chat with Chic's legendary Nile Rodgers.Get in touch...Facebook- search 'Two Shot Podcast' Twitter- @twoshotpod Instagram- @twoshotpod If you've enjoyed listening then please click through to https://www.patreon.com/twoshotpod to make a donation to the running costs of the show. Yes, Yes, Yes! The Two Shot Pod is back and all up in your podcast feeds. Hope you've all had a lovely summer and are hungry for some more intensive TSP audio content. We're here to provide just that. This week is an episode we recorded in front of a live festival crowd in the magical Tim Peaks Diner at the fabulous Kendal Calling festival. We had the  pleasure of spending an hour with Mr. Andrew Ellis. Andy is a Manchester lad through and through and his self-deprication, humour and humbleness are an absolute winning combination of traits. You'll recognise him as Gadget from Shane Meadows 'This is England' film and subsequent television series as well as loads of other televsion and film appearences. It's a great chat that turned a raucous festival crowd to rapt attentiveness and that's all down to Andy's great storytelling and sincerity. We're out recording around the UK again really soon and after another week's break (sorry) we'll be back to bringing you a fresh helping of TSP goodness every Thursday morning.  Get in touch...
