John Grimshaw has been interested in plants his entire life, as both gardener and botanist. He holds a first class degree in botany and a doctorate in the ecology of the forests of Mt Kilimanjaro from Oxford University. His Tanzanian connections remain important, and he's proud to be an honorary elder of the Maasai community of Lerang'wa, Tanzania. African plants remain an important botanical interest, but he is fascinated by all plants and has grown a huge diversity in his gardens. He has travelled widely to see plants growing in habitat. His first book was The Gardener's Atlas (1998), recounting the journeys plants have made from their source to our gardens. Working in The Netherlands for the seed company K. Sahin, Zaden. B.V., John was responsible for developing perennials and other plants for the seed trade. This gave him invaluable experience of commercial horticulture and management. Following that he joined Colesbourne Park in Gloucestershire as Gardens Manager, where he was responsible for maintaining and developing the historic Elwes family garden, especially the snowdrop collection. He co-authored the monograph Snowdrops (2002) with M Bishop & A Davis, published by Griffin Press. Between 2004-2009 he was lead author of a major book on trees introduced in the past 35 years, entitled New Trees, Recent Introductions to Cultivation, with co-author Ross Bayton. It was sponsored by the International Dendrology Society and was published by RBG Kew, in May 2009. In August 2012 he became Director of The Yorkshire Arboretum, North Yorkshire, with responsibility for the 120-acre arboretum and 20-acre Ray Wood, on the Castle Howard estate. This involves a wide range of management and administrative duties, fundraising and networking as well as active curation of the extensive collection. In 2021 the arboretum opened the country's first dedicated Tree Health Centre, to raise awareness of the problems facing trees from diseases, pests and climate change. He was appointed MBE for ‘services to tree health and plant conservation' in the 2024 New Year Honors List.   John is a member of the Royal Horticultural Society's Nomenclature and Taxonomy Advisory Group, the RHS Woody Plant and Gardens Committees, and in 2012 led the RHS review of the Award of Garden Merit. He speaks and writes widely on horticultural and tree-related subjects. Other interests include the arts, cookery and poultry-keeping. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/plantatrilliontrees/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/plantatrilliontrees/support

Four chapters of Hells Angels meet in a Yorkshire pub in Normanton and start drinking heavily. What could possibly go wrong?  The crime is not a mystery and this is more of a period piece of life in the UK in Yorkshire during 1975.This is  a short podcast, probably an unknown story made in a few hours just to post something in August. I have another podcast to post towards the end of the month. I am working on a couple of longer projects, including a podcast on the Krays, telling of some of the unknown stories and showing what thugs they actually were. I know that there is little need, or interest for another pod on the Krays, but I have some new material that I picked up during other podcasts that I had not known about and and I feel that I have to make a pod on them as I did on Jack the Ripper having lived in that area of London.Just to explain again, this story is low fi and there is a cat and dog disturbance  which I managed to stop recording, but I left an electric fan running for a few minutes after ejecting creatures which I have tried to drown out with background music. The multi instrumentalist from Leipzig (Germany) builds a protective bunker, brick by brick, for protection against depression and demons. Anyone who dares to venture into the bunker underground will be guided through the musical labyrinth by familiar faces. Akela1 has mastered the genre game. He uses synthwave here, progressive rock there and plays with dark but powerful sounds that contrast with melancholic melodies. However, there is a clear direction: forward!

I'm A House Gangster presents The Gangstercast

Gangstercast 52 comes from UK artist Junia. Junia, born & raised in Yorkshire UK has been DJing for 17 Years taking in gigs at some of the most noteworthy clubs in the UK such as Hard Times, Back to Basics & The Ministry of Sound. As Junia moved into production more International gigs & residencies followed with dates throughout the USA & Europe furthering Junia’s notoriety on the underground house scene, allowing collaborations and releases with more recognised House Pioneers of the likes of DJ Pierre, K Alexi, & Victor Simonelli.   More recently Junia has released his latest music offerings on DJ Sneaks ‘Magnetic Recordings’ with DJ Support from heavyweights Doc Martin, DJ Sneak & Mark Farina to name but few and has also had music used by leading global brand Pioneer as part of their '20 Years of DJing" advertisements.   Also Junia’s remix skills have been requested by Gramaphodzie on his Disko Zoo label and underground house label ‘Doin work Records’ who have also recently released a further Junia EP entitled “The Awaited Ep” out now!   Talking about this mix and how it represents him as an artist, Junia says “This is a live recording in a club so is the real thing as far as experiencing what I do in a set, I am all about texture and contrast while DJing, I don’t like to lose intensity with the music.  I’m definitely not a simple one track after the other type of DJ and this mix demonstrates that.  We've got old & new music but I put it together in my style with edits and incorporate live remixing along the way but using the music as it was made, none of this push button pads stuff that does it for you now, I’m old school like that – it’s like turntablism just with house music, I like to call it "audiolism".   When asked to describe the house gangster sound and what the House Gangster movement means to him, he replied; “Musically it’s a "Come test us" attitude, show us what you've got! I’ve always been about that anyway.”   We asked Junia to tell us about how he choose the tracks and compiled this mix, to which he explains; “This is a club mix so the tracks choose themselves. Mixing them is the easy part but choosing the right tracks to compliment each other in the mix and create energy that could not be sparked otherwise is the thrill for me.   There isn’t enough DJ's that do this - you have to spark something in the music you’re playing that the crowd couldn’t feel just by listening to the originals at home or by twisting the effects knob on the mixer, Guys should be having to come over and peer through into the booth just to see what it is that’s goin on when a DJ spins, not just mundane mixing outro into intro!”

The fields of geographical epidemiology and public health surveillance have benefited from combined advances in hierarchical model building and in geographical information systems. Exploring and characterising a variety of spatial patterns of diseases at a fine geographical resolution has become possible (Banerjee, Carlin and Gelfand 2004). Insight into the sensitivity of the resulting inference to the choice of the structure of the different components of the hierarchical model has been gained through the use of simulation studies (Best, Richardson and Thomson, 2005) and numerous case studies. Baseline results on how to use the posterior distribution of relative risk estimates to detect areas of increased risks have been discussed (Richardson, Thomson, Best and Elliott, 2004) Extending hierarchical disease mapping models to models that simultaneously consider space and time and/or several diseases leads to a number of benefits in terms of interpretation and potential for detection of localised excesses. Such extension is accompanied by an increase of the complexity of the model structures that might be specified. The presentation will first outline classes of hierarchical space time models that can be used to characterise the patterns of chronic diseases. Space-time analysis of related diseases that that tease out common and specific space and time structures will be discussed next and illustrated on an example related to male and female lung cancer (Richardson, Abellan and Best, 2006). Finally, the use of space-time models to better characterise the stability of spatial patterns and to highlight atypical areas with unusual variability in their risk time pattern will be discussed and illustrated in a number of realistic scenarios. In particular, we will show how to model the space-time interactions and exploit their posterior distributions in order to classify the areas' risk pattern over time as 'predictable/ repeatable' or 'atypical/ highly variable'.
