Motivation vs. Discipline - Take Action

League of Wildness, Motivation and Discipline are two very different concepts that I believe often times get confused and/or misused. Motivation is all in your mind and discipline is all in your actions. You are what you did so make sure you are taking action and not just getting excited/motivated to potentially do something. League of Wildness, We're back with a solo-cast from @wilddanvinson.  I saw an article about how consistently diets DO NOT work and it made me consider the importance of longterm repeatability. Specifically, if you are going to pursue something to improve your health and fitness it MUST be consistently repeatable for essentially - the rest of your life. Interestingly - as you get healthier there will come a point where to get even healthier it will take massive effort to continue to improve your health. At this point, the focus can start to shift towards maintenance.  In this episode: The gold standard of any practice is repeatability. Why unprocessed foods can help a ton to reduce caloric load. Have you tried this approach and does it work for you? Do you need a plan going into your workout or do you feel your way through it? In this episode: Are stretching and mobility work the same thing?  Why do you think avoiding your phone/device in the morning makes such a big difference?  We talk often about movement and exercise, and the differences between them. It seems like walking, and its sibling, rucking, can offer the perfect balance of both. Is that accurate? How much could we accomplish for our health goals if we just did those 2 things?  What do you think is the biggest factor that keeps people from spending more time outdoors?  When I was a kid, fitness standards were a part of our physical education curriculum. Do you think adults should be aiming for certain fitness goals? League of Wildness, We're back with a solo-cast from @wilddanvinson.  I've been getting into a really solid system combining Rucking + Running in addition to more classic strength and conditioning workouts. I added it up and on average - I'm doing 3.28 "workouts" every day. Keep in mind - this is the combination of Yoga/Mobility, classic workouts, Rucking, Running, and good old fashioned static-stretching.  Some days I'll "workout" for 2+ hours and other days I'll be at 30-40 minutes. What's important to recognize is that I do something everyday - every rep counts. I also dive into a more nuanced protocol known as "Interval Weight Training". I've been getting into these workouts the past few weeks and they are no joke. They're not something you'd necessarily do year-round, but can be used in 4-6 weeks blocks if you want to crank up the intensity. I encourage you to try the concept out for yourself. League of Wildness, I recorded this episode immediately after an awesome workout I did out here in the wild that I wanted to share with you all. The idea was to accumulate 75 Pullups while hiking about 4.5 miles up a mountain. I did this by stopping at different trees along the way and busting out Pullups off of a branch. Afterward, I did an arm finisher where I did 3 sets of 8 Curls with a rock (tempo 31x1) immediately followed by 5 heavy single-arm curls (each arm) with my backpack. It was legit! As mentioned in the episode, you don't need to hike up a mountain to do this workout. Load up a backpack and head out into your neighborhood or local park with pocket monkii, MB2, OG monkii bars, or whatever else you have. It's easy to quickly set up, bust out a set of Rows and Curls, then continue on your way. You'd be amazed at how much volume you can do without breaking yourself down following this Microworkout protocol.  Try it out and let me know how it goes! League of Wildness, I just finished listening to Nims Purja on Joe Rogan. Nims' film "14 Peaks" is a must-watch for any dedicated LoW member and I'd highly recommend the Rogan podcast as well. Nims completed what everyone else thought was absolutely impossible - climbing the 14 highest peaks in the world in a span of six months. He beat the previous record by several years. He's a wildman. Listening to Nims share his journey made me reflect. Yes - he did something incredible that was thought to be impossible. But haven't we all done things we thought were impossible? To me - the difference is in the magnitude versus the absolute difficulty. If we took the time to really think about times we had to push beyond what we thought was possible, no matter how small or trivial it might seem, we are capable of much much more. It's more about how hard something was for you as the individual instead of trying to quantify difficulty on an absolute level. Thanks for listening! This is fantastic, however, I find that without any specific directive - the idea stays an idea and fails to become manifested through action. So, I created my own. See below: Get outside every single day for 10 minutes at the absolute minimum. 30 minutes is ideal. More outside time is always better. How did you like the All-Wild episode concept? The sound can definitely be improved and if anyone has a headset microphone they recommend please let me know. Thanks for listening! League of Wildness, Today we're talking about Tempo Training and why I've been psyched on including it in my own training of recent. What is Tempo Training? >>Reps performed @ a prescribed cadence. Tempo Training is always written as a four-number prescription. For example: 3111 First number (3): This is the eccentric lowering portion of the exercise. Second number (1): This is how long to pause at the bottom of the exercise. Third Number (1): This is the length of the concentric (muscle shortening) portion of the exercise. Fourth number: (1) How long to pause at the top of the exercise. Why include Tempo Training? Improve movement quality. Reduce the likelihood of injury. Improve connective tissue health. Increase strength. Example workout: 2-3 sets Pushups @ Tempo 3111 8-12 reps. Rest 60-90 seconds. Should we include Tempo Training in future programs? Thanks for listening! League of Wildness, There is an infinite amount of content we can consume. But like food, overconsuming content can cause problems. The challenge is that it feels good to get those 'ah-ha' moments, but if we never actually apply them in the real world I have to ask - what's the point? I've strived to be much more intentional not only in regards to the content I consume but also in how I consume it. Specifically, I've been keeping notes on my phone where I'll just write a sentence or two from a podcast that I know will be valuable in the future. In Kim's email last week, she did a FANTASTIC job outlining how she really took the time to go deep into a book and then apply the lessons into her life. She didn't just read the book and go "That's interesting. Okay, what's next?". She took the time and put in a serious writing effort to distill some of her own source code. I'm super inspired by hearing about her process and we hope to share more with the League. Thanks for listening! League of Wildness, I recorded this episode a few weeks ago and for myriad reasons I'm just getting it uploaded now. I wanted to share my experience as well as some reflections regarding the Marshall Fire that destroyed my entire neighborhood on December 30, 2021. It was a very real example of just how quickly life can change. I was at home with my family, doing some casual holiday work and the next thing I know we are evacuating from our home as a wall of fire pushed by 80+mph winds drove it straight through the middle of of town. It was a surreal experience and I'm still processing the event. We are currently displaced from our home due to smoke damage. In addition, our neighborhood is essentially a hazmat zone from all the burned homes. It's not an optimal place for wildness. On the bright side, the fire has brought the community together like nothing I've seen before. The generosity and selflessness that I've witnessed has been a powerful reminder of how much humans depend on each other. It's also made me extremely empathetic to those that have gone through, as well as those that will go through something like this in the future. It's 100% the case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time - no one did anything wrong and there is no fault. The fire just happened and its consequences must be dealt with.  Thank you to all the members of the League of Wildness who sent words of encouragement as well as care packages. I cannot thank you enough and I'm eternally grateful. It makes me much more confident in the journey ahead having such a wild crew at my back. Thanks for listening! Hey monkiis, I had an idea come to me this morning while considering how much time I waste scrolling mindlessly on my phone seeking a hit of dopamine. The tendency is to categorize things as either good or bad while upon deeper consideration there are many facets of life that lie somewhere in the middle. The idea that 'tech is evil' is definitely an idea I've gravitated towards. But maybe I'm just thinking about it in the wrong way. There are certainly aspects of tech that are evil - literally and figuratively, but there is also unlimited potential and you now have access to essentially all of human knowledge in a device that fits into your pocket.  Here's my thought experiment: how much better can you make your life and how much time can you stop wasting by creating a habit of using technology with intention. You are no longer allowed to use Instagram, Facebook, Strava, YouTube, or the internet in general for mindless entertainment. Instead, before opening an app or search engine, you must have a specific purpose for doing so, and that purpose must be related to doing or learning something useful. monkii 360 Tactical System Alastair Humprey's Website I hope that you find this episode useful. 3 Approaches to Microworkouts (Quicky Episode)

Hey monkiis, The concept of Microworkouts has been on my mind a lot recently. They are such an effective tool to have in your belt and I think have both health and performance applications. I have distilled my thoughts down to three ways that you can utilize Microworkouts to fit your specific needs. Check them out: My favorite monkii Microworkout device at the moment is Isocore X. 1) Workouts that are less than the standard 1-hour gym workout. I wouldn't put a hard upper or lower limit, but I'd say somewhere around 20-minutes max, but ideally something closer to 'a few minutes'. This type of sesh would fall under the header of 'training' - exposing the body to a minimum effective dose that crosses the threshold of adaption eliciting the anti-fragile, super-compensation effect. 2) Take the volume of a 1-hour workout and spread it over multiple sessions throughout the day to accumulate the same (or potentially more) volume than you would in a typical 1-hour workout. However since it is spread throughout the day you accomplish the work in a 'non-exhaustive way'. 3) Microworkouts as a way to incorporate more total movement throughout the day. This is more about interrupting long periods of inactivity versus making gains. You can essentially do anything that isn't just sitting or standing there. I'd argue you'd still be making 'gains' simply by moving more - regardless of whether it is a workout or something more along the lines of non-exercise activity. Hey monkiis, I just finished up a 5-week training program I had written for myself and wanted to share some reflections. I also wanted to share some solid thoughts shared by the NorCal Wildman monkii Craig. He shared a personal anecdote of his experience getting JACKED using bodyweight training only and also had a really solid hierarchy that he developed around the 'why' for his training. monkii Craig's Training hierarchy: 1. Joy (peace, contentment, equanimity, life balance/satisfaction) 2. Healthspan (time on this planet free from disability) 3. Lifespan (total time alive) 4. GPP (be reasonably good at any physical task life throws at me) 5. Vanity (esthetics, body comp, LGN, etc.)   Thanks, monkii Craig!   Overall, I was pretty psyched about my training program for the past 5-weeks. There are definitely some tweaks to be made, but overall I feel like I'm making progress. I'd like to try and really make Microworkouts a priority and sprinkle in focused training sessions on top of these.   Here is a link to the episode I did about building this training plan back in January 2021.   If you have questions, comments, or a potential guest suggestion please send a note to Elders@monkii.co or send us a DM to @monkii.co on Instagram. With monkii, yoga, boxing, running, walking and playing sports. We love having something at home to do our workouts! Thanks again for your great workouts and equipment. My hubby lost 30lbs and I have lost 38lbs and we're still going strong. Just wanted to thank you for helping us start our lifelong journey to health." What struck me about Julie's note was that they were not just doing some crash diet or chasing the latest fad, but instead were making a conscious effort to change their lives and adopt a totally different lifestyle. It also wasn't just about losing the weight, but instead, they were focused on becoming healthier, fitter, and I would also add wilder. I really enjoyed talking with them and getting to know them and I believe that there is a ton to learn from their journey. Maybe you take some ideas as use them as your own. Or, maybe you have a friend that needs some simple steps to just get started.
