Last month, I quit my job and joined The Great Resignation. Now when I first heard about this movement, I honestly had no intention of leaving my job. If you're a high achiever, you are probably really good at getting things done, that's why you got really good grades, got into great universities, and landed good jobs. However, as you embark on new challenges, like advancing your career without a set schedule, taking on additional courses on top of balancing adulthood, or starting a side business alongside a full-time job, planning gets more and more difficult. There is no “perfect” way to do it because everyone's life and goals are different, but this is especially for high achievers because we are so used to excelling in ways that other people can't. It can be so easy to wear “busy” as a badge of honour because especially as a high achiever, you might also have a sense of impostor syndrome and fear you don't live up to the expectations of others or yourself. This combination of being a high achiever, always being busy, and impostor syndrome leads to a lot of planning mistakes which ultimately leads to…. Extreme stress as you try to cope with your overwhelming schedule Beating yourself up because you can't live up to your commitments Irritability as you put your health and relationships on the back burner And ultimately burnout. That's why today, I want to talk to you about the 4 planning mistakes every high achiever makes (including me!) and the solution that has greatly helped me. Press play to get started! Who doesn't love a good hack? Not me. I'm the queen of efficiency so I love finding ways to hack my time, my money, and at one point in my life, my career. While it might be tempting to try to find the next “career hack”, it could actually be holding you back in your career and hurting in the long run. One of the biggest life lessons I've learned in my personal growth is that if you shortcut your way through personal development … it will catch up with you in the long run. It's easy to want to rush your way to career success, but I firmly believe that your career spans a lifetime, and it's a journey filled with obstacles and successes the whole way through. And so while it might be tempting to just rely on resume hacks, or interview hacks your whole career life … eventually they will run dry. In order to be successful in your career in the long run, you will need more than a hack, and at that point, the stakes are much higher. So that's why today I'm going to be talking about how career hacks can actually damage your career and what to focus on instead. Career planning is difficult enough. Career planning with other people's opinions and society expectations…can feel impossible. When it comes to decision-making, it can be easy to crowdsource opinions. As high achievers and perfectionists, this can be additionally difficult because not only are we looking for more information voice; we are looking for validation. A common obstacle for young adults when choosing a career path can be disappointing their parents. And I was very lucky in this department. My parents have always been extremely supportive of all my career choices, even when my choice was to work temporary jobs to travel the world. I, however, have felt a lot of pressure from many other sources including strangers, acquaintances, friends, and society as a whole. Before we start, I want to talk about the underlying current of why criticism is hurtful. Criticism is hurtful because we either have insecurity about it or believe that a part of it is true. When we feel hurt by criticism or our career choices, it's usually because it touches upon an underlying doubt that we have internalized. And having doubt is not shameful. I don't you to read or listen to this and think all you have to do is "ignore what other people think" and "think positively." It is not something we have to be shameful about ourselves but it's important to manage in order to not hinder our careers. That's why in this episode I outline my 5 career changes in the last decade and how to change careers in different situations including: When you love the idea of the career more than the actual job. Having career and business goals are great, but the follow through on the plans it takes to reach those goals can be a struggle. It's easy to feel the excitement of planning, but the motivation can quickly dissipate when you need to execute those plans. And this is part of the human experience. It is also a key difference between people who are successful and unsuccessful people in their careers. Having career goals and dreams is great, but there are so many people who live with unfulfilled potential because we are taught to just “push past” our negative feelings if we don't feel like doing something. And if you don't, if we aren't able to do this, it provides some kind of shameful commentary on our innate abilities. And this whole internal dialogue we as a society have on motivation, planning, and career success is really ingrained in the fixed mindset (which describes talents and abilities as something we are born with instead of something we grow with). A lot of the rhetoric around motivation comes around external factors when we feel it lacking inside. Buy the right planner. Wake up at 5AM. Download all these apps. Drink tons of caffeine and find the next hack. Sure, while these things can be aids; true motivation comes from how we process our thoughts in relation to our circumstances. Because no, we do not all have the same 24 hours as Beyoncé because her circumstances are different (i.e. being able to hire people to help with her everyday routines and needs). So instead of comparing yourself to these types of standards, it's really important to deep dive into how to truly follow through with your career plans. If you are struggling with motivation, you are in the right place – let's get started! SHOWNOTES: How To Follow Through With Your Plans (When You Don't Feel Like It!) Looking for more help? I used to think that because I'm a quiet, shy and soft-spoken person, I couldn't be a leader. I am naturally an introvert - an INFJ - T or "the Advocate type" to be exact. And I thought leadership was reserved for a certain type of people - the extroverts, the charismatic ones, and I would always be a behind-the-scenes person. However, as I've grown in my career, I have not only learned the importance of different types of leadership but specifically why the world needs more introverted, quiet and naturally shy leaders. In this podcast episode, I'm going to talk about: How overthinking can actually be an asset in certain situations, especially when you are introverted and shy; Why the career development and success of quiet, shy and introverted people is vital to the world; And the conflict-resolution style of people who are quiet, shy and introverted leaders and how it's more effective than being the loudest, most aggressive voice in the room. Being an introvert does not mean you have nothing to say. As I grow in my career, I have learned how to listen to my introverted side and utilize that as a strength in providing thought-provoking, inclusive and authentic leadership without having to be the "life of the party." If you are a quiet, shy or introverted person, listen to this episode to remember why the world needs leaders exactly like you. For a long time, I didn't think of myself as a people pleaser; I thought of myself as a rule-follower, a “nice” person, a “hard worker” and “initiative-taker.” Basically, I used to think of myself as synonymous with a “people pleaser” but never thought about it as having negative connotations or consequences. I just saw myself as a hard worker and someone who really “rose through the ranks” because of it. I gave that person's pleasing side of me so much credit for my success without really evaluating the consequences. I never spoke back, but that also meant I never stood up for myself. I always followed the rules, but never questioned them. And anytime that I did something wrong, or disappointed myself, I would beat myself up more than anyone around me because of my own internal standards. This was especially prevalent when I was in my 20s and younger in my career because I didn't really know how to manage this “people-pleasing” side of me. However, as I've grown in my late twenties and really evaluated what success means to me, I see that this has come with a lot of consequences that I've had to learn to manage. Self-Sabotage is the obstacle that we least expect in our careers. Because doesn't it sound so contradictory? Why would we sabotage our own career? When we think about career development, it's really easy to think that it is only influenced by external factors like what the job market looks like, if there are promotional opportunities at work, how supportive your team/manager or work environment is like, but sometimes all of these things can work out and you still don't reach your career goals. When it comes to personal growth, it's important to understand that a part of this behaviour is because your brain and body are trying to serve you, it is trying to keep you safe. Self-sabotage is your career can stem from a lot of reasons, but at its core, it's when your internal narrative regarding career goals and career actions are in conflict. And this conflict creates a tension that causes self-doubt, procrastination, impostor syndrome and a host of other feelings to stop acting in a way that achieves our career goals. So if you are a high achiever, who has always been used to being successful in school but are struggling to apply it in your career, listen to this episode! My career has seen an explosive amount of growth in the past few years. I made more progress from 2019-2021 than I have in 10 years of my career and a lot of the changes I used to accelerate was something school 20+ years of education didn't teach me. Today I want to talk about the mindset that got there. The truth is, there was no “hack” that truly accelerated my career. There were helpful tools along the way that were only helpful. And before I was able to work on my mindset, these tools were usually hit and miss and short-lived if they did work. In this podcast episode I talk about: How I conquered the indecision of choosing a career choice and self-doubt in promoting myself The personal growth tool that saved me hundreds of hours on research that led me in circles The scary truth of what being successful in my career would mean for my personal life How I FINALLY created my dream career and I'm using this method for the rest of my life The biggest career lesson I finally started to embrace that school actually taught me to avoid Looking to make these mindset shifts to accelerate your career too? Today I'm answering one of the most popular questions in the Work Life Money Community! A lot of people in the community work in the public service and non-profit sector that doesn't have the financial resources to pay their employees the way the private sector does. And it can be really difficult to maintain that balance of meaningful career with financial security, wanting to build generational wealth and taking care of yourself and your family. But it doesn't have to be all-or-nothing. This is something I struggled with for a long time. It can be difficult to feel like you can make a living while doing a meaningful career can seem impossible because of the rise of living costs. In this article, I'm going to break down how to balance a meaningful career with financial security and although I'm going to gear to the public/non-profit sector because that's where I came from, this can also apply to start-up companies. These are industries that don't have the large financial resources that big corporations but does that mean you should give up on a meaningful career? Listen to this episode to find out! Is it possible to stay in entry-level jobs forever? Yes. Today I wanted to pull back the curtain on the unglamourous parts of career growth and talk about what happens when you ignore it. It might seem like the success of some people is just a result of hard work, but the truth is, it is intentional. Career growth, personal growth, and career success, in general, takes a lot of work, and no one is going to make you do it if you don’t want to. Last Saturday, I was at an event called “Career Day” hosted by The Financial Diet and one of the attendees mentioned in the chat that they had been in entry-level jobs for 20 years, and the reality is, that’s not so surprising. There are some people that will never get promoted because no one will care about your career more than you do. And there is no one there checking your homework. No one tells you when to quit a job, when to ask for a promotion, when to network, etc. These are all things you can actively choose to do or not and career growth isn’t like growth in school. There is no linear path, e.g. you take a certain course, get a certain mark, and move on to a certain level. You can stay at the same level your entire career. So today I wanted to really talk about the 7 reasons why you might never get promoted and how to avoid these mistakes. Let’s get started! Looking to change careers but afraid because you don’t want to “waste” your education? Changing careers is scary enough, but it’s even harder when you are pulled towards the career path you have all your education in. It can be hard to break away, not only from the financial ties that you have to a certain career path but also the emotional ties because you don’t want to disappoint anyone or feel like you “wasted” your time. You may have spent a lot of money on your education. You may have had financial help from your parents and don’t want to disappoint them. You may have put in a lot of years and effort into this career path and… Now you’ve decided this is not for you. So what do you do? Do you stay on the career path even though you are not happy and try to “make” it work or do you “throw away everything” and start over again? So in today’s episode, I’m going to break down how to change careers without feeling like you’re “wasting” your degree. A few weeks ago, I turned 30. And today I wanted to share with you something, I’ve never shared with anyone else before. When I was 20 years old, I made a goals list called "30 before 30" as I sat in my childhood bedroom watching P.S I love you. I had no idea how I was going to accomplish anything, all I had to do was overcome my self-doubt and try. I’m really glad that’s how I’m entering my 30s. In this podcast episode, I share everything on my 30 before 30 list, something I have NEVER completely shared with my family, partner, or best friends. I hope you enjoy this insightful look into my last decade and hope it’s helpful for you to see that it’s okay to create goals without the perfect plan to achieve them. It’s also okay not to achieve everything. When I created this list, I only told myself that I needed to try, not accomplish everything. Some of the things on my list I failed two or sometimes THREE times. And that’s okay. It’s okay to go for things and fail the task, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Work-life balance is something everyone internally strives for, but very few people actually feel they have. Statistics show that 40% of people say that their organization makes it feel impossible to have a work-life balance and 70% of employees say having poor balance negatively impacts their lives and work. Work-life balance is also especially hard for high-achieving perfectionists because we have such big goals and high standards for our work. Work-life balance is something I love to talk about because it seems so simple, but at the same time, it is so complex to achieve. Feeling like you are struggling to achieve any semblance of balance? Side hustles: it’s been a hot topic in the last few years as a result of the changing careers, and as I mentioned in episode 38, I think side businesses should be considered a part of anyone’s career journey because they can serve so many purposes. It can be a creative outlet, it can be a second form of income if you love your job (but it doesn’t pay enough), or it can just be a way to explore different things and challenge yourself (but don’t want to quit your job cold turkey). I’ve personally been a side hustler for a long time, even before I knew what the world side hustle really meant. Today, I am going to share my journey from side hustles, and in particular, my mistakes. Having a successful career is difficult, but it isn't as complicated as it seems to be, because the secret to a successful career is not about the technical components or salary; there a million different career paths and the definition of a "successful" career is subjective. Side note: these secrets don't just apply to people with a 9-5 career, but also those who have a side business or full-time business. Advice for a high-achieving perfectionist is different from advice for other people because as a high-achieving perfectionist, you already have the skills, capability and work ethic to be successful in your career. You are smart and ambitious and have a proven track record of accolades in school. And so your problem is not "waking up at 4 am" or "work harder in your career," you already know how to find those answers and do those things. However, the biggest thing holding back a high achieving perfectionist from their careers is themself, so these are the career secrets that you need to know and apply! Negotiating is an intimidating task for most people, but it is especially difficult for people who are high achievers and people pleasers. Mostly, because it’s not something most of us have had to do before. If you were a high achiever in school, most of the time, your accolades were earned and presented to you; you didn't have to negotiate to be seen as smart or successful in school. However, in your career, you will need to negotiate. And this can be particularly difficult if you are a person with self-doubt or impostor syndrome because your default will be to a people pleaser. You don’t want to rock the boat because you are grateful to even a job offer, you don’t want to jeopardize your chances. So if you would like to learn how to negotiate confidently when you are shy, non-confrontational, and when you really don't want to.....follow these 5 steps! As an adult, it’s so funny to look back on all the things you learned in school but can’t remember or don’t use on a daily basis. On the other hand, when you are an adult, it seems like you are expected to know all of these skills for your career that school never taught you. When we talk about skills, it’s easy to only think about the tangible skills that school teaches us and limited soft skills like teamwork (throwback to all of those group projects) and communication (i.e. class projects). However, while these skills can help you excel at your job; school doesn’t teach you the essential soft skills to get a job or having a successful career. There’s so much more complexity in developing skills than just being able to do something, there is a layer of developing soft skills that have to come internally. And nurturing that part of yourself and navigating the personal growth behind developing soft skills is something school does not teach. In today’s episode, I am going to be talking about the 3 essential soft skills you need to master for career success. Even if the school didn't teach this to you, that’s what the Money In Integrity Podcast is for! Choosing a career can be hard, but it’s even harder when you are multi-passionate and interested in everything. It can be so difficult to choose only one option, what if it’s the wrong option? I know this dilemma all too well because I have changed career paths too many times to count. I’ve worked in government, travel, academia, non-profit, IT services, security services, retail, food services, intellectual property...I’ve even interviewed to be a Canadian spy (I’m not kidding). So yes, choosing a career path is difficult, but it doesn’t have to be that complicated. In this episode of the Money In Integrity podcast, I walk you through how to choose a career path when you can’t decide what to do.
