Send us Fan MailWhy are other people getting promoted faster than you—even when you're working just as hard?In this episode, **Dr. Jason Wiggins—executive leader, leadership professor, author, and motivational speaker—**breaks down what really drives career growth, promotions, and leadership advancement in today's workplace. If you're a Gen Z or Millennial professional feeling overlooked, this episode will challenge your thinking and give you a clear strategy to take control of your career. Here's the truth: hard work alone doesn't get you promoted—visibility, measurable impact, and leadership thinking do.Too many professionals stay stuck because their effort isn't seen, their impact isn't clearly communicated, and they're operating at the wrong level. Meanwhile, top performers are solving bigger problems, positioning themselves strategically, and building influence before they ever get the title. This episode shows you how to start doing the same—immediately.
Priya Sam is the Host & Founder at Unleash Your Voice, where she helps ambitious women in six-figure corporate roles who struggle with being overlooked, undervalued, or unsure how to communicate their value to step into undeniable executive presence and unlock the promotions, visibility, and compensation they truly deserve. Her signature Power Story Framework is a key part of all of her programs as she helps her clients build powerful personal brands, strategic communication skills, and confidence. In this episode, Priya breaks down the concept of the “visibility gap”—the disconnect between the value you deliver and how clearly others understand and advocate for that value. She shares why high performers often stay stuck despite doing excellent work, and how the real issue isn't capability, but communication and positioning. Through a powerful client case study, Priya reveals how shifting from task-based language to impact-driven storytelling can completely transform how you're perceived, helping you gain recognition, unlock new opportunities, and accelerate your career growth. In this episode, you'll learn:→ What the “visibility gap” is—and why doing great work alone won't get you promoted→ How subtle communication habits (like saying “I helped” or “I supported”) are quietly diminishing your perceived value→ A powerful mindset shift from listing tasks to clearly articulating business impact and outcomes→ How to craft strategic “power stories” that make it easy for leaders to advocate for you in rooms you're not in→ Real-life case study: how one client turned overlooked contributions into a promotion and 12% raise
Have you ever trained the person who got promoted over you? Or held your entire department together behind the scenes while someone else got credit for the results? Here is what no one tells you about getting promoted: it is rarely the hardest worker who moves up. It is the person whose work is visible to the right people. In this episode, Jill Avey and SisterSmart coach Sarah Spencer break down the five types of invisible work that women leaders take on every day -- work that carries enormous strategic value but almost never surfaces in performance reviews or promotion conversations. You will learn how to identify this hidden work, translate it into impact language, and build a visible case for your promotion to VP without changing who you are.You will also hear about Simone, a leader who was passed over for promotion twice before using this exact framework to land her VP promotion in under 10 months.Whether you are currently being overlooked, preparing for your next review, or simply tired of being the person who holds everything together without recognition -- this episode gives you a practical framework you can start using this week.In this episode, you will learn:Why non-promotable tasks are keeping women stuck in the leadership pipelineThe 5 types of invisible work that are secretly your biggest career assetsHow to use impact language to translate behind-the-scenes contributions into a powerful promotion caseThe 4-step Quiet Promotion Framework for making your invisible work visible to decision makersHow Simone went from being passed over twice to landing her VP promotion in under 10 months0:00 -- Introduction: The invisible work problem and why the hardest worker rarely gets promoted4:57 -- Why your results are not speaking for themselves (and Jill's own experience with this trap)5:51 -- Meet the 5 types of invisible work with SisterSmart coach Sarah Spencer16:30 -- Simone's story: passed over twice, promoted to VP in under 10 months using impact language19:15 -- How to use impact language to completely change the story you tell about your work20:45 -- The Quiet Promotion Framework: 4 practical steps to make your invisible work visibleyour careerTopics covered in this episode include: invisible work at work, getting promoted from director to VP, women in leadership, executive presence for women, non-promotable tasks, self-promotion at work, how to ask for a promotion, career advancement for women, leadership development for women, building visibility at work, impact language for leaders, how to get noticed at work, and the quiet promotion strategy.Mentioned in This EpisodeEpisode 40: How to Build a Professional Network (referenced for deeper work on strategic relationships)Emotional Labor Episode 42Malia Mason episode 44 on non-promotable tasks (referenced as the previous episode)The Bates Model of Leadership Presence (referenced by Sarah Spencer in the executive presence discussion)
What does it actually take to get promoted? In this episode of Urban Girl Corporate World, Nicole Dove answers one of the most common questions she receives from professionals at every level: how to move to the next stage in your career.Drawing from her own experience across Wall Street, global operations, and cybersecurity, Nicole breaks down why strong performance alone is not enough and what it really takes to position yourself for advancement. In this episode, she covers:What it takes to move beyond “doing great work”Why clarity, communication, and visibility matterHow to align with your manager on expectations for the next levelHow to identify and close critical skill gapsThe role of stretch assignments and strategic exposureIf you're ready for more but not sure how to get there, this episode offers a practical framework to help you move forward with intention.
Advancing in cardiothoracic surgery requires more than technical excellence in the operating room. In this latest STS Career Development blog, Sahar Saddoughi, MD, shares how surgeons can get promoted by building programs, leading multidisciplinary teams, and aligning their clinical and academic work with institutional priorities. She believes that success comes from demonstrating measurable impact, strategic focus, and leadership that shows you are already contributing at the next level.
Send us Fan MailEver feel like you're doing everything right, but your career just stopped moving? In this episode, we talk through why that happens. We start with the Peter Principle—the idea that people get promoted until they reach a level where they're no longer effective—but we don't stop there. We get into what's really behind stalled careers and why strong performers across every level can lose momentum.Early on, it's easy to stand out. You bring energy, say yes to everything, and pick things up quickly. But over time, that can turn into routine. The reality is, companies don't just reward performance—they reward growth. When that growth slows down, so do the opportunities. We also spend time on the people side of things—mentors, sponsors, and the relationships that actually help you move forward. Not in a forced or transactional way, but by building real trust and showing up consistently. From there, we get practical. We talk about how to identify where you're falling short, how to build new skills, and what it really means to step into a leadership role. As you move up, the job changes. It's less about doing everything yourself and more about leading, delegating, and thinking bigger picture. If you stay too deep in the day-to-day, you can end up holding yourself—and your team—back. If you've been feeling stuck or wondering why your results aren't turning into growth, this episode will help you take a step back, reset, and move forward.Hit play, subscribe, and share it with someone who's ready to take the next step. Send a textWhen someone asks what you're working on, you say "I'm managing the Q1 launch" or "I improved retention by 15%." That's the problem. When you talk about "managing" or "improving," you signal execution ability, not strategic leadership. If you talk like a doer, you'll be kept in a doing role. In this 5-minute episode, Kele Belton gives you the exact promotion-proof statement formula to reframe your work and signal strategic impact at the executive level. What This Episode Is AboutYou're doing VP-level work but not talking about it in VP-level language, and that gap is costing you promotions. Kele breaks down the three-part formula that transforms how you communicate your contributions: Start with "I identified" (proactive problem-solving), state the business result you created (outcomes, not activities), and demonstrate multiple areas you impacted (systems thinking). About Michael Wenderoth:Frustrated that you're not getting ahead at work, or having the impact you seek? The real reason holding you back will surprise you, says Michael Wenderoth, executive coach. His provocative insights, featured in Harvard Business Review, challenge conventional wisdom by confronting an uncomfortable truth: that embracing office politics and influence is essential to advancing your career. The award-winning author of Get Promoted, Michael has helped thousands of professionals re-examine their assumptions about power, politics, and authenticity to accelerate their careers, become more effective at work, and break glass ceilings, many of their own creation. Michael is on a mission to help people get ahead, without having to sell their souls in the process. Prior to becoming an executive coach, Michael served 20 years in senior roles, bringing breakthroughs to market in China, the US, and Europe. He holds an MBA from Stanford Business School and was trained as an executive coach at Columbia University. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Michael Wenderoth discuss:Networking and influence in leadershipThe role of authenticity and vulnerabilitySituational and adaptive leadershipThe intersection of AI and future leadershipCareer advancement and organizational politics Key Takeaways:Many capable leaders are overlooked because they avoid networking and political skills, which are crucial for advancement.Influence and power are neutral tools that can be used ethically, yet many “good people” resist using them due to negative associations.Overemphasizing authenticity and vulnerability without strategic awareness can leave leaders exposed and even derailed.AI has the potential to both reduce bias and amplify existing organizational problems, making hybrid human-AI leadership a necessity. Career setbacks happen to everyone, but how you respond to them determines your professional trajectory and future opportunities. • The "tube top" comment highlights the importance of getting honest feedback after a rejection• One word in an interview (describing a workplace as "hostile") can sink your chances if the interviewer takes issue with it• Remember interviews are two-way conversations - you're also deciding if you want to work there• Always be kind to gatekeepers (receptionists, assistants) as they can significantly influence hiring decisions• Give yourself limited time (maybe 30 minutes) to feel disappointed, then refocus on moving forward• The rearview mirror is small and the windshield is large for a reason - look ahead more than behind• Building internal networks before positions open strengthens your candidacy when opportunities arise• "Emotional resonance" with colleagues often matters more than qualifications when candidates are similar• Congratulate the person who got the job you wanted - it shows maturity and teamwork• Repeated rejections may indicate blind spots you can't see - seek honest feedback from trusted leaders• Everyone successful has faced rejection - persistence and continuous improvement lead to eventual successThank you for listening! What can M&Ms, McDonalds, Harry Potter, Aquafina, Taylor Swift, Jeopardy, and Bed Bath & Beyond teach us about landing a dream job or securing a promotion? Plenty. Imagine you're at a job interview. You've rehearsed your answers, polished your resume, and you're feeling confident. But what if the key to landing that job isn't just about your skills and experience? What if it's about how you make people feel? How you make people feel is your brand, Zane says. That's what Leslie Zane, a Harvard Business School alum and prominent branding expert, talks about in this interview. She says that whether you're trying to get a new job, a promotion, or more customers for your small business, it all comes down to how you build your personal brand. Zane breaks it down into three main ideas: be salient, be relevant, and be distinctive. Being salient means making sure people remember you. It's not just about doing your job well, but about connecting with people all over your company. Zane gives an example of a dental hygienist who calls patients after their appointments to check on them and offer advice. This extra touch helps the hygienist stick in people's minds. Being relevant is about focusing on the good stuff. Zane says if you make a mistake at work, don't dwell on it. Instead, do more good things to push out the bad memory. She talks about how McDonald's dealt with rumors about "pink slime" in their food. Instead of denying it over and over, they started showing how they make their food with fresh ingredients. This helped people forget about the pink slime and think about good things instead. Being distinctive means standing out, but in a way that still feels familiar. Zane tells a story about the game show Jeopardy. When the longtime host Alex Trebek died, the producers tried inviting different celebrities to host the show. But viewers didn't like it. The ratings only rose when they chose Ken Jennings, a former champion contestant, as the new host. He was familiar enough that viewers felt comfortable with him. Zane also talks about how these ideas can help small businesses. She says it's important to reach out to new customers, not just focus on the ones you already have. She suggests finding ways to connect your business to things that people already enjoy. If you run an accounting firm in Kansas City, for example, you might talk about local sports teams or famous barbecue to help people feel a connection to your business. Throughout the interview, Zane emphasizes that building a strong personal brand isn't about bragging or being fake. It's about creating genuine connections with people and consistently showing your best qualities. You're creating buzz about yourself. The more positive connections you make, the stronger your brand becomes. Zane's advice goes against some common ideas about marketing and self-promotion. She says you don't need to stick to just one thing or only target a specific group of people. Instead, she encourages reaching out to as many people as possible and finding ways to connect your skills or business to things they already care about.
