There's a specific kind of stress that doesn't shout. It hums. Unpaid bills you keep thinking about. Appointments you still need to schedule. That return sitting by the door. Emails you flag and forget. None of it is urgent in the moment, but all of it quietly takes up space in your head. For a long time, those small tasks filled our week. We implemented the life admin hour, and wow, it has changed our lives. Listen to learn more!
Being an adult is so hard because of the constant, low-level decisions that never stop - the scheduling, the errands, the emails, the meals, the maintenance, and the mental load that quietly piles up in the background of daily life. In this episode, I'm breaking down the systems and skills that have made my adult life feel calmer, more predictable, and more manageable. Instead of relying on motivation or discipline, these are practical frameworks I use to reduce decision fatigue, lower stress, and support my nervous system through everyday life. We talk about scheduling in a way that actually works, why maintenance prevents burnout, how to manage life admin without overwhelm, why feeding yourself consistently matters more than you think, and how self-regulation ties everything together. This episode is about building a life that feels lighter - not by doing more, but by creating systems that support you when things get busy.Subscribe to Beyond Your Budget:https://breakyourbudget.substack.com/Personal Finance Starter Kit: https://breakyourbudget.substack.com/p/your-personal-finance-starter-kitHow to Be Organized Article: https://annanewton.substack.com/p/how-to-be-organised-in-2026BREAK YOUR BUDGET RESOURCES:

Joe's bored with all the life admin he has to do today - which is mainly just car stuff and paying a parking ticket. So he's in a bit of a mood, which David makes the most of teasing him about. Then David mentions the date mornings that he's started doing with his wife Naomi, which Joe seems a little uncomfortable about. There's also some news they can't talk about on the pod and Joe reveals how frustrated he gets with wasting money. Plus, David gives us his predictions about the future of podcasting - and it's all going to be about virtual reality, apparently? You know those life admin tasks that are a step beyond basics like grocery shopping, paying bills, and taking out the trash? The things that you'd like to be doing more regularly, but when life gets busy they fall to the backburner. Things like checking in on your finances or reviewing your budget, sorting kid artwork, cleaning out your inbox, managing photos on your phone, or adding notes to a keepsake journal or memory book for your kids. All things that aren't necessary for daily life to run, but things that make you feel like you really have it together. I like to call these tasks "next-level adulting". In this episode, I walk you through a monthly wrap-up process that I've been using for the last 5 months as a way to make sure I'm not forgetting about these "next-level" tasks. This wrap-up has also become a fun ritual that helps me review all the progress I've made and also appreciate life and the passage of time. I'm sharing exactly what's on my month-end checklist and tips for how you can create your own. Today's big idea is that there is a balance that you've got to strike in order to improve your relationship to life admin. And that is to make peace with the fact that while the human brain loves to close open loops–and cross things off the to-do list–it's also true that there will always, always be more to do on the adulting front. So you can't let your peace of mind depend on how many things are left on your to-do list. Here's some insight on to how to make peace between doing, and never being done. Frankly, life admin just makes me want to lie down. Which is why I'm excited to be interviewing my friend, Jessica Tudos, a mindful organizer based in Toronto whom I always love talking to about how to get a grip on the many facets of life while still respecting things like creativity and being moved by inspiration and having a lot of things going on because you're genuinely interested in a lot of things–something Jessica calls being multi-passionate. In today's episode, Jessica dishes up how she keeps all the details of life contained, and how you can do it, too, in a way that suits your personality and your life. I learned a ton! This week on the podcast I'm talking about how to take better care of all the details of life–making appointments, paying bills, prepping your taxes, keeping your paperwork up to date, your car maintained, your communication handled, etc., etc., etc. In other words, I'm talking about adulting. And when I went to research this topic I realized it had a very technical sounding name: life admin. Which simultaneously made me feel a mixture of grief and relief--a simultaneous feeling of, no wonder I've been feeling the way that I have, and, dang, I guess this is really a thing that must be reckoned with. Let's do it, together. Contribute your tips and successes to the Life Admin Tipsheet! This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. Life Admin. That phrase probably makes you nervous - I know it does for me. It makes me think about all the stuff I have to keep on top of: I need to remember to pay my car rego, to RSVP to that parent-teacher conference, and to book my next doctor's appointment. But when you think about all the things you have to get done at the office in 2022, you're probably pretty confident, right? There's heaps to do, but you're a professional! You have systems and processes in place to make sure you don't forget anything important, to make sure you're consistently progressing towards your goals for the year. So why don't we take the same approach when it comes to our goals and responsibilities and home? Well, Mia Northrop and Dinah Rowe-Roberts, the authors of Life Admin Hacks, do exactly that! Mia and Dinah mobilise their years of experience in senior strategy, commercial, digital and customer experience to tackle life admins with the skills they've picked up in their professional careers. They teach you everything from how to decide whether something goes on a to-do list or not, to why you should be sending audio messages instead of emails and texts.
