Perfectionism means striving for flawlessness and perfection - accompanied by self-criticism and concern about criticism from others. Many people say that perfectionism is toxic. Yet, many academics are perfectionists - and this was also proven by science. The academic environment may be the perfect breeding ground for perfectionism. However, there are two types of perfectionism: adaptive and maladaptive. So maybe it's not so bad...?The good news is; it is possible to unlearn the perfectionism itself or the parts of it that you don't like. Today's topic is the impostor syndrome: a self-perceived intellectual fraud - coined by Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes, back in 1978.Despite being such a common phenomenon for high-achievers, there are even therapists who had not heard of this "syndrome". There are three core elements of the impostor phenomenon:A belief that he/she has fooled others.A fear of being exposed as an impostor. An inability to attribute own achievement to internal qualities such as ability, intelligence, or skills. So many successful people have impostor syndrome: Albert Einstein, Michelle Obama, Agatha Christie, Meryl Streep, Maya Angelou, Neil Armstrong, Tom Hanks, Robbie Williams, David Tennant… so many quote-unquote “successful, high-achieving” people. Two questions regarding today's topic:Firstly, do you think you are harder on yourself than you are on others when it comes to expectations and mistakes? How do you feel when you look at your achievements more objectively? Secondly, if you are one of the people who experience the impostor phenomenon, how does knowing its name and how wide-spread it is make you feel?References:Clance, P. R. (1985). The last episode was about our individual thoughts, feelings and beliefs that prevent us from talking openly about our mental health problems and keep us silent being mostly fear-based. I believe that the feedback we receive from others is more related to the empathy and/or knowledge of that person. Many of us get some subtle reactions when we disclose our struggles with mental health. The person we talk to may end up:belittling or ignoring our issuegiving unsollicited advicerevealing their colour in relation to the use of medicationLast but not the least, it is time for universities to take action in terms of supporting their employees in the event of a possible mental health crisis; because we don't develop immunity against mental health problems just because we age.Today's thought exercise:Firstly, regardless of whether you have mental health problems or not, do you think you have information about the different types of struggles people may have? Do you realize that you have prejudices?Secondly, how do you think the university could support your mental health as an institution?Next episode: Impostor Syndrome3dfRgrihvW1apkkcWrUT Hosted on Acast. It is 2020 and mental health is still a big taboo in the western societies. We increasingly talk about "mental health awareness" and wellbeing at the workplace; but these mostly stay at the discourse level. We are still very scared of talking about mental health, especially from a personal standpoint. We talk about it in a depersonalised manner, even though, globally, at least 1 in 10 people have mental health conditions. There are two major barriers that prevent us from talking about our mental health struggles: Our own thoughts and beliefs about having mental health issuesFeedback we receive from the other people when we disclose our problemsThis empisode is about the first one. Our individual thoughts, feelings and beliefs that prevent us from talking openly about our mental health problems and keep us silent are mostly FEAR-based. We are still very much afraid of having mental health problems. It is easy to label symptoms of mental health ocnditions as "character defects" or "character flaws".It is difficult and lengthy to get our mental health conditions diagnosed. Mental illnesses may manifest differently for each one of us suffering from them. Another negative effect mental illnesses may have on our lives and careers: the fear of not being accepted, the fear of being judged, the fear of being isolated… Next week:Silence and stigma around mental health in relation to the people around us.Today's thought exercise:If you have had mental health issues yourself, especially if they were somewhat related to your academic work, were you able to talk about it? If you did talk about it, what was the reaction? If you didn't, why was that? If you never had such struggles, have you ever had a colleague who talked about their mental health problems openly in the workplace? What was the reaction they received?
