2026, année charnière en France pour la mémoire de l'esclavage. Le pays célèbre cette année les 25 ans de la loi Taubira reconnaissant l'esclavage comme un crime contre l'humanité. Le début du mois de juin a aussi été marqué par l'abrogation officielle du « Code noir », texte de loi destiné à codifier l'esclavage. C'est dans ce contexte que Marie Binet a publié son ouvrage Une femme qui ment, récit d'une véritable quête identitaire au cours de laquelle l'autrice a découvert ses origines antillaises, et toute une histoire familiale cachée, héritée de l'esclavage. RFI : Vous sortez Un femme qui ment, dans lequel vous racontez comment vous avez découvert, à l'âge adulte, que vous étiez Noire – je résume grossièrement évidemment, mais on va approfondir. Pouvez-vous me raconter comment l'histoire assez extraordinaire qui est la vôtre a commencé ? Marie Binet : Tout a commencé avec la mort de ma mère. C'est à ce moment-là que j'ai découvert que ma mère avait caché toute sa vie, son histoire, son origine, qui elle était. Car en réalité, quand vous êtes enfant, votre mère vous raconte qu'elle est Américaine, que vous avez des ancêtres hongrois… mais lorsque votre mère décède, vous tombez sur des papiers, et là, vous comprenez qu'en réalité, elle était créole.  Je découvre une pochette, oui, dans laquelle il y a des faux papiers, une fausse identité… Elle a plusieurs noms, plusieurs lieux de naissance : tout est faux. Donc, comme dans une enquête policière, je commence à mettre petit à petit, bout à bout, des infimes éléments. C'est là que je fais une première découverte : ma mère a eu un fils, j'ai donc un demi-frère, qui a vingt ans de plus que moi. C'est lui qui va m'apprendre qu'elle venait en fait des Antilles. À ce moment-là, je remonte le fil, jusqu'à découvrir que ma mère, qui se disait seule, sans parents ni rien autour d'elle, a en réalité une famille énorme ! Et notamment un père qui fut un homme politique. Un personnage qui avait pensé raconter l'histoire de l'esclavage. Vous allez donc en Martinique pour y voir plus clair, et ce que vous découvrez là-bas, c'est d'une part que votre grand-père était Noir – ce que vous n'auriez jamais imaginé puisque votre mère était blanche de peau –, et d'autre part que vos ancêtres directs étaient esclaves. Oui, j'ai fait un film pour raconter cette enquête familiale, qui s'appelait Noir comment ? Lorsque le film a été diffusé à la télévision, un spectateur m'a envoyé un courrier me disant qu'il avait fait des recherches et découvert la patente de liberté de mon arrière-grand-père. À ce moment, c'est la première preuve que j'ai, qui est écrite. Ça me fait un choc. Ce grand-père, cet arrière-grand-père, c'était tellement proche de moi ! Ce n'est pas loin du tout ! Et de savoir qu'il était esclave, c'est une bascule dans le temps, dans l'identité… C'est ça qui a été bouleversant. Et vous constatez aussi qu'en Martinique, personne ne s'étonne de votre quête d'identité. Vous pouvez aller voir n'importe qui en disant : « Je cherche un tel », et on s'interrompt ou on vous aide ?  Toutes les personnes que je vais rencontrer au fil de cette enquête vont prendre l'histoire pour leur histoire. C'est pour cela que je me suis rendu compte que ce travail de mémoire était essentiel. Pas seulement pour moi, mais pour beaucoup de gens. Cela correspond à une quête d'identité qui est générale. Cette histoire de l'esclavage a été tue d'une manière tellement forte, tellement violente d'une certaine manière… On recommande d'oublier. Dans cette histoire de l'esclavage, il y a aussi l'histoire de tous ceux qui ont fait des efforts monstrueux, gigantesques pour être de nouveau des hommes, des femmes, des enfants normaux – et même plus que cela : pour pouvoir avoir l'honneur d'eux-mêmes. Est-ce comme cela que vous expliquez le besoin maladif de votre mère de mentir, de reconstruire une part d'identité ? Une façon, comme vous le dites, de se réinventer une vie normale, jusqu'à la fin de ses jours ?   Ah, c'était encore mieux : elle était exceptionnelle ! (rires) Ce secret de famille qui était le sien, elle l'a porté avec elle comme un souhait d'exceller dans tout ce qu'elle faisait. Et donc, je pense qu'elle ne me l'aurait jamais dévoilé. Elle n'aurait pas passé sa vie entière à oublier qui elle était pour être révélée de cette façon. Nos sumergimos en la historia de tres figuras clave que, sin conocerse, compartieron un mismo objetivo: medir lo invisible. Francis Galton, estadístico inglés y primo de Darwin, creó el concepto de "naturaleza y crianza". Pero su obsesión por los datos lo llevó a formular ideas peligrosas: la eugenesia. Una ciencia que pretendía mejorar la raza humana... y que acabó teniendo consecuencias trágicas. Emil Kraepelin, psiquiatra alemán, quiso poner orden en el caos de los diagnósticos mentales. Observando cientos de casos, propuso clasificaciones clínicas que aún usamos hoy. Gracias a él, hablamos de "esquizofrenia", pero su sistema rígido también abrió el debate sobre la reducción del individuo a una etiqueta. Alfred Binet, psicólogo francés, diseñó el primer test de inteligencia con un objetivo noble: ayudar a los niños con dificultades. Pero su invento fue malinterpretado por otros, y su uso dio pie al temido CI, una herramienta que acabaría sirviendo para excluir más que para incluir. Este episodio no solo es una lección de historia. Es un espejo para el presente. Vivimos en una era de big data, donde los algoritmos deciden si obtenemos un crédito, qué anuncios vemos o incluso si conseguimos un empleo. Y todo en nombre de la "medición objetiva". ¿Hasta qué punto estamos repitiendo la misma historia, pero con tecnología más avanzada? ¿No estamos cayendo en la misma trampa de Galton, al creer que los datos son neutros?
