The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Ed Templeton is a professional skateboarder, contemporary artist, and photographer. A teen skate prodigy from Orange County, California, Ed turned pro in 1990, just before graduating high school. He did a lot of touring for skate demos, along the way picking up a camera and documenting the scene around him. He painted and drew, and later incorporated his artwork and graphics for Toy Machine, the skateboard company he founded in 1994, which he continues to own and manage. Templeton's visual artwork first gained recognition in the late 1990s as part of the Beautiful Losers collective loosely gathered around Aaron Rose's Alleged Gallery on Manhattan's Lower East Side. He and his wife Deanna—also a photographer—are the subjects of the 2000 Mike Mills film, Deformer. Templeton's subject matter focuses on the ethos of suburban and street life, which sometimes includes beach culture, surfers, and surfing. He has published over thirty books and zines of his photographs and artwork, including one of his most famous titles, “Teenage Smokers.” His work has been shown in galleries and museums around the world, most recently at the Long Beach Museum of Art, in an exhibition titled: Wires Crossed: The Culture of Skateboarding, 1995-2012. In this episode of Soundings, Templeton and Jamie Brisick talk about crafting a sustainable career as a skateboarder, capitalism, skateboarding's DIY ethos, documenting skate culture, becoming a painter, identity, individualism, and Mark Gonzalez.

American artist & skateboarding hall-of-famer Ed Templeton talks to Dominique Nzeyimana at Tim Van Laere Gallery Antwerp a decade after they first sat down together. As Ed's new show, 'The Sprawl', opens at this esteemed gallery, the pair discuss his unique legacy carved out of skate culture and fine art. In this episode, Ed Templeton discusses the balance between practicality and artistry in building an immersive art show. He explains how honest conversations with Tim Van Laere led to a year of honing his artistic vision for this new expo and what giving people the 'full Templeton experience' means. Ed also opens up about life growing up, the outer/inner wounds that shaped his art, and how founding his brand, Toy Machine, gave him the freedom to pursue his aspirations on his own terms.  Collectors of Ed Templeton's art include names like Demi Moore, John Waters and Judd Apatow. Ed's extensive body of work is known for its candid portrayal of humanity - bloody palm and middle finger up. Themes of adolescence, suburbia, counterculture and personal complexities run through his oeuvre.  His acclaimed 25-plus-deep catalogue of photo books includes the incredible 'Teenage Smokers', the ground-breaking 'Deformer' and the fairly new publication 'Wires Crossed'. Ed Templeton's journey from world champion athlete to esteemed visual artist and tongue-in-cheek 'benevolent overlord' has influenced multiple generations, writing a new blueprint for life after going pro.  Follow Ed Templeton HERE. This re-imagined soundtrack is a spacious and spacey freeish jazz odyssey that is grounded in ECM sonic textures, late 60's Miles Davis reverberations and the very now vibes of experimental hip hop.  Joseph tells us how Welcome To Hell differs from his previous records and how growing up in a rural Canada played a role in the concept.  He shares the negative feedback he's received about the record and how he's spun it into a positive and a new perspective on art in general. We get proof that Ed Templeton is truly a wonderfully rad dude and Joseph tells us the story of Chad Muska at Welcome To Hell video premier. I'm a skater. It's that simple.   In today's episode of ‘Chats & Tatts' Podcast by Aaron Della Vedova, I am joined by Jamie Thomas, a professional skateboarder, and the owner of Zero Skateboards and Garage Days Collection.   Jamie started skateboarding when he was in high school with friends. His journey wasn't an easy rock as he suffered to be an ‘outsider,' slept on the streets, experienced hunger, and fell thousands of times on his skateboard. But these didn't stop him from wanting to belong in the skateboarding community. Then when the opportunity arose from Ed Templeton's Toy Machine, everyone was all over him.   So for over twenty years in the making, Jamis has redefined the culture of skateboarding and being a skater. He showed a great drive, optimistic approach, outstanding work ethic, and remarkable progression that made his skateboarding career an inspiration to aspiring skateboarders across the globe. He earned the respect that once he hadn't.   Today, as the original pioneer of groundbreaking street gnar on the board, Jamie continues to push himself in business and skateboarding, while balancing family and life.   Find out how Jamie faced the challenges to land in the career he's most passionate about, what drives him to do better skateboarding every day, how he fought his inner demons, how faith and Christianity impacted his mindset, and what his future plan is in his career and business.    Also, you don't want to miss this episode because, for the very first time, he'll share the deeper meaning of his tattoos! I love it! I feel like 15!” - Jamie Thomas   “I felt like I needed to prove to myself that I had value and that I was worthy of being a professional skateboarder.” - Jamie Thomas   “The thing that I'd learned the most was that I'd been humbled and I'd been brought to my knees… what I've been doing the last five years in order to be able to dedicate myself, to the relationships that matter most and humble myself to accept the mistakes that I'd made in the past and to try and learn from them. So they're ultimately not things that I regret. They're things that I appreciate.” - Jamie Thomas   “In the late nineties, I became a Christian. I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior because I knew that I had some internal demons that I was suppressing and that I was trying to navigate on my own. I reconnected with my faith...” - Jamie Thomas   “...seeing life through a different lens.” - Jamie Thomas Useful Resources: Shop Zero Skateboards merchandise here: https://zeroskateboards.com/collections/all-products   Get in touch: Follow Jamie on zeroskateboards.com; Facebook; Instagram; and Twitter Connect with Aaron:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chatsandtatts/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/AaronVedova Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aaron.dellavedova/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@chatsandtatts/featured

Georgia Martin is a highly skilled up-and-coming skater from Charlotte, NC. She came on my radar after I witnessed her casually crush the indoor park in Greensboro on a rainy weekend, and I've been a big fan ever since. Despite being a young buck in the game, she holds it down for Armada Skate Shop, Toy Machine, and Nike SB. We talked about her early years getting into skating, flyouts at Grayson skatepark, getting discovered and put on by Mike Sinclair, and much more. She has a great head on her shoulders and it was a blast to nerd out on skateboarding with her. She's working through a minor injury at the moment, but I have no doubt we'll be seeing some greatness from her in the near future. #GMshreds!

TOYMACHINE! NOT PLAYING AROUND WHEN IT COMES TO SUCCESS!If you’ve ever watched the singing competition television series, “THE VOICE,” then at some point you’ve seen the judges (who listen to contestants sing without seeing them) turn their chairs after hearing a performer sing just one note. That was the jolt I felt when I heard the first vocal in the new single “I’m Fine” by the Clifton, NJ rock-rap-punk band - ToyMachine! The tune is a perfect blend of hard rock and rap, with an incredibly catchy chorus sung by a frontman who very honestly admits, “I didn’t like music very much at all growing up.”ToyMachine! is Ray Bentley (Rapper/Singer), Ryan Lamon (Guitar/Vox), Mikey O’Connor (Bass/Guitar), and Greg Alders (Drums). I had the chance to virtually hang out with Ryan and Ray recently to talk about the group’s determination, focus, and vision for success.  Tune in to listen to this very enjoyable podcast and to learn what ToyMachine! does to pack their concerts with  fans!Host - Diane DiMemmoGuests - Ryan Lamon, Ray BentleyPodcast intro music by Readymade Blakeup

Jamie Thomas grew up as a country bumpkin in the backwoods of Alabama, before being recognized at local contests by Vans, and Real Skateboards. He then moved to San Francisco, where he was homeless for a portion of time as he continued to establish himself as a skateboarder. Bouncing between board brands like Experience and Invisible, Jamie is offered a place on the Flip team alongside Rune Glifberg, Geoff Rowley and Tom Penny, but turns this down for the opportunity to rebuild Toy Machine's team with Ed Templeton. Later on, Zero is born from Andy Howell's company Zero Sophisto, and Andy gives Jamie his blessing to take Zero, and run with it, with the help of Tom Swank over at Tum Yeto. Zero quickly becomes a board brand, picking up talented team riders such as Adrian Lopez, Chris Cole, Ryan Smith, Copelman, Marisa Del Santo, Windsor James, and others. Together, the team put out some of the early 2000's most iconic videos, such as Thrill of it all, Dying to Live, Misled Youth, Strange World, No Cash Value, Cold War, and most recently, thrill of it all. Nowadays, they have a stacked team with the likes of Tommy Sandoval, Garette Hill, Jamie, Chris Wimer, and even some Canadians, like JS Lapierre, Colin Lambert and Mikey Ray. “Don’t be repressed in your work, dare to experiment, consider any urge, if in a new direction all the better.” – Edward WestonWelcome to the Outerfocus Podcast!Episode 27. I can’t quite believe we’ve been jabbering away for so long. Are you not sick of us yet? This milestone episode (every episode is a milestone, for like, a metaphorical mile or something) we are joined by World Champion skate boarder, Ed Templeton. Ed is a pro skateboarder, photographer, designer, painter, skateboard company (Toy Machine) owner and all round nice guy. Among many other things. We were delighted that he gave us his time and chatted for a good two hours, and we could have gone way longer. The conversation started going as soon as the record button went down, so I’ve pretty much left this episode uncut. I’ve chopped a couple of bits that I didn’t think were relevant, due to time and file size constraints, but this is how it went down. We also mention Edward Weston. Oh, and Ansel Adams.
