Owning a wedding and event venue can be a rewarding experience - but are you safe when it comes to lawsuits and other potential legal issues?Justin Sutton of Nuptial joined me to talk about venues and how he helps them ensure they are doing things right when it comes to contracts, agreements, and legal entities.I think his elevator speech says it all: "We help wedding and event destinationsovercome hugechallenges."Three Takeaways:1. Prepare for the worst, because anything can happen when an open bar is involved (or not in one case...listen in to hear about a dry wedding gone wrong).2. Legal structures can be complicated and having a team of professionals can help you untangle the web of owning a wedding venue, as Justin says.3. Your contracts might need an update - it's always good to make sure you are protecting yourself and your business properly if you want to be in it for the long haul.Reach out to Justin and his team using this link if you are interested in working with him: https://nuptialrisk.com/

The officiant plays more than just a legal role on the day of your wedding. They can set the mood by offering you a personalized ceremony - as opposed to just following a template found online. The best officiants I know are those that tailor the ceremony to the couple. Curious about when to send out your stationary? There are some things to consider when planning your wedding. Personally, I love getting something hand written in the mail! A stationary designer can ensure that your invites coordinate with your personality and vibe of the wedding.Three Key Takeaways:1. If you are late to send Save the Dates, just skip it and focus on the wedding invitations.2. Choose your wedding vendors based on personality, because that will ensure you work well with them throughout the process.3. Plan ahead - some rural towns may not deliver as soon as you would like. Add a few days for those invitations to arrive!Whitney Poersch is a stationary designer who resides in Knoxville, Tennessee.See her work and get in touch with Whitney by clicking the link below:https://www.instagram.com/invitationsbywhitney/?hl=en
Amanda Greene is the co-founder of Black Orchid Events NC, a planning and staffing company here in Asheville. After being in the wedding industry for years, she decided that she was ready go out on her own!Top 3 Takeaways:1. Staffing is so important when it comes to the guest experience, because it's the staff that interacts with the guests. Your flowers might look beautiful but they can't talk to the guests! (don't get me wrong, I love good florals).2. A good planner will take care of any hiccups without you even realizing it.3. When your guests are coming from all over the country - make sure that they dress for the weather and know how to drive in the mountains. Maybe get a shuttle! She reminds folks to be flexible and open to possibilities regarding the realities of your wedding.Visit them using the link below!https://blackorchideventsnc.com/
We love our flower farmers here in Asheville! Loretta was kind enough to take some time to speak with me about her business and how she got started.Top 3 Takeaways:1. Keep flowers cold! Once they are cut - it's time to get them in the fridge and give em some flower food.2. Sometimes we need to take a break - burnout is real in this industry given the intensity of the work (weddings are mostly on Saturdays between April and November here in WNC)3. They host a u-pick farm, which I love! Hopefully I can make it up there this year to pick some flowers. You can check them out using the link below:https://www.theneverendingflowerfarm.com/

Your photographer is with you during intimate moments - make sure they are a good fit not just in style, but in personality.2. Burnout is real: as wedding vendors we need to take care of ourselves so that we can take care of our clients. Regina is still stoked after every wedding, just ask her husband!3. It's an honor to be the bar service at Jeanne and Zac's wedding reception! Jeanne Davies works for me here at Jack's 47 HQ. Her official title is "assistant to the regional manager" and she does a dang good job. She is also one of our bartenders and sometimes hosts tastings. Key Takeaways:1. When going the DIY route, remember to hire professional vendors when needed. Jeanne and Zac are doing their own catering, but hired a professional photographer and florist.2. Please consider hiring a wedding planner/coordinator. Jeanne is a unique case since it's not wedding season so she has time to handle all of the responsibilities of planning AND she has extensive experience in the wedding industry and event planning.3. You can step outside of the norm when it comes to non-alcoholic beverages: Jeanne batched up a blackberry lemonade that will be served on tap.We will be bringing Jack, our midnight blue truck to her wedding on 2/20/21. Tune in next week to hear the recap on her wedding and if it went down as planned.

Lisa McMillan has been in the wedding industry for a long time, and I always like hearing from pros who have seen trends come and go and witnessed a shift over time.Three Key Takeaways:1. She treats every wedding as if it were her own - 2. Creating individualized weddings by doubling down on the details, even if it means personalizing your DJ's outfit!3. Remember, everything you see on TV is not true. Don't let the mainstream guide your idea about weddings! "You definitely need to be comfortable with your photographer" - Shelby Stewart. It all started with a hobby (obsession?) of disposable cameras. She asked for them as birthday/Christmas presents and before you knew it, they were full and on their way to Costco for printing. As a future bride herself, Shelby understands how important it is to understand how the body is photographed and she knows how to make you look your best.Per usual, we remind our couples that choosing your vendors based on personality is important. And for vendors - get specific and don't afraid to niche down. You'll find the right clients that way, especially if you're in a saturated marketplace.Shelby loves Charleston, her corgi, and obviously - photography. Book her before someone else does:https://www.shelbystewart.co/https://www.instagram.com/shelbystewartweddings/
It's my pleasure to introduce Ryan Ashley The Poet as the first wedding vendor interview of 2021. Ryan adds such a charming touch to your event by writing poems on a typewriter for you and your guests. Couples (or anyone) can approach Ryan during your wedding reception or rehearsal dinner, provide him with a quick backstory about their life/story or a few words that represent them, and VOILA, Ryan creates an individualized poem on the spot.Three Key Takeaways:1. The business started on accident after he wrote a poem for his girlfriend's mother in an airport (listen to the podcast for the whole story)2. I love that he's diversifying his business by partnering with greeting card and flower delivery companies. #innovation3. Forget the coozie - your guests will love an individualized poem to remember your big day.Book him now, and here's a little hint - his set up looks great next to one of our vintage tap trucks.https://www.ryanashleytheartist.com/
Kenzie is the boss lady of Cataloochee Sky Weddings and Events - planning weddings is her jam and it was a pleasure to have her on the mic. Some key takeaways:1. Separate from the pack during your wedding weekend and spend some one-on-one time with your partner.2. HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER! There is so much going on during that day...DIY is great, but not when it comes down to the actual day.3. Be weird - stand out. Emma and Eistir McShane cooperatively run Verbena Events, which includes catering, cakes, and more! Originally meeting while working together, this dynamic duo has figured out how to make things work in the kitchen, and at home. This podcast is not only about working in the Asheville wedding industry, but having a successful relationship at the same time!Top 3 Takeaways:1. There are serious logistics around transportation, keeping things hot, avoiding overcooked chicken (tune in for their trick on tender chicken).2. The truth of why catering is a different skillset than cooking in a commercial kitchen.3. Some clients want a one stop shop - Verbena Events could be a good solution for those wedding clients here in Asheville. https://www.verbenacakesandcatering.com/https://www.facebook.com/verbenaeventsavl/https://www.instagram.com/verbenaeventsavl/

Tracy Masterson is the "property manager" at The Vineyards at Betty's Creek, but her responsibilities on site of this beautiful 600 acre wedding venue reach farther than that. Tracy is on-site for the weddings, and plays a big role in making sure you have the best wedding weekend a couple could ask for. With on site lodging and multiple romantic spots, The Vineyards at Betty's Creek is one of the top venues in WNC for couples who want mountain views and an elevated wedding reception. Although it's located an hour from Asheville, the care to detail of this venue is quite rare - all buildings are air conditioned and/or heated depending on the season. What I like most about this venue is that it has mountain views without the typical trek up a mountain...if you know what I mean. Here are three key takeaways from our interview:1. Don't worry about rain: Their pavilion deck has an overhang that can be used in case of rain - with mountain views and protection at the same time.2. On site lodging is worth it's weight in gold! And they have it, up to 15 guests can stay in the lodge throughout the weekend.3. Tracy agrees - having a tasty yet limited bar is the way to go, and is what we specialize in at Jack's 47.They book up early, so inquire ASAP to see if your date is still available: https://www.thevineyardsatbettyscreek.com/
Kim Reese is the owner and head chef of Fetching Fox. She loves artistic food, charming details and dropping a big, juicy f-bomb. Don't be fooled by her cutesy style and small frame — she's more of a Gordon Ramsay than a Julia Child. Maybe it's her Brooklyn roots, or maybe it's her uncompromising commitment to excellence, but she's always been gritty and direct. Kim loves working with people who have boatloads of personality and want their event to be as unique as they are.https://fetchingfoxsc.com/
Maddy Krupp is relatively new to the photography industry within the past couple years, but is going hard and I am sure she will become one of the most sought after photographers very quickly. We talk about how your personality can set you apart in a crowded marketplace - Maddy has done it with her photography business which is so important in her Charleston market.Work/life balance? Sheila Mraz is one of my favorite wedding photographers in the area! She's warm and welcoming. She inherited her fathers love of photography (and his equipment as well!)Elopements, family, portraits, weddings. For 12 years, Sheila was an educator here in Asheville - she had great teachers and wanted to inspire others as she had been in school.Styled shoots are a great way to not only network, but produce beautiful images that can inspire weddings to come. After leading a mastermind for her sisters, they convinced her to produce a similiar event for folks here in Asheville. This group is called Spark. The importance of mentorship can help ensure that newcomers learn the ropes before diving in for a big day.Her new ambassador program is a great way for parents to capture images of their children throughout the first year.We talk about the importance of gratitude and appreciate in an industry that can be very competitive. Year of 2021 will be a year of survival! It's important as a wedding vendor to maintain profitability so that we can survive and serve our couples for years to come.3. Pricing tiers can help wedding vendors serve different types of clients.Inquire for signage and calligraphy through her website:https://www.joyunscripted.com/
Kai Schmoll started Blue Ridge Event Staffing nearly a decade ago after taking a course at Mountain Biz Works here in Asheville, North Carolina. At first, it was simply called Blue Ridge Bartenders but he quickly realized that he could fill the needs of his clients by offering all types of staff for weddings, corporate events, and private parties.Three Key Takeaways from this podcast?1. Trust your vendors to prescribe a solution for your event - cutting down in key areas like staffing may not bode well for a successful event.2. Staffing may be "unsexy" but people create the experience - if you don't have good staff in place then your guests' experience is up for debate.3. Figure out your priorities and stick to them - is it service staff or food or the DJ or the photography? You can inquire about availability on their site: https://blueridgeeventstaffing.com/

Saint Luna - Charcoal Filtered Moonshine - 100 proof - 50% ABVThis spirit is distilled from molasses and rye, and made in Statesville, North Carolina.Currently, you can find this spirit in Memphis, Chattanooga, and NYC.During our interview, I enjoyed a bartender favorite, the Negroni - made with equal parts of Saint Luna, sweet vermouth, and Campari. Stir with ice, add some bitters, and you're good to go.David suggests another cocktail made with Saint Luna - muddled green bell pepper, fresh lime juice, Saint Luna, and simple syrup. Sounds tasty! Add a jalapeño if you like some spice in your cocktail.Saint Luna is not barrel aged, but simply charcoal filtered which adds a smoky undertone. During the interview, we talk about batching signature cocktails, how David got started in the business, and what kinds of cocktails are good for Saint Luna (Lunar Mule anyone!?!)Not in one of their local markets? You can order Saint Luna and get it shipped right to your door!David has yet to visit Asheville, and I look forward to hosting him and showing him the lay of the land.Three Takeaways:Moonshine can be tasty! This spirit has historically had a bad rap, but Saint Luna is turning that around by creating an elevated spirit. No sugars/syrups are used in this moonshine - in fact, it drinks more like a tequila or white rum.I also learned something new today! Vodka can made of any sugar or grain - it just needs to be four times distilled, which removes any residual character you might get from different sugars (beets, potatoes, cane syrup, honey, etc.)Overproofing is a term used in the industry when you proof the spirit above 80 proof (or 40% ABV). Make sure to adjust your ratios when making a cocktail if you use an overproofed spirit.Visit their website to see where you can find them: https://saintlunaspirits.com/Check out their Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/saintlunaspirits/Also, I mention one of my favorite establishments in Asheville, The Waterbird: https://www.thewaterbirdasheville.com/Pistons & Prosecco is a wedding industry podcast hosted by Bryce Bjornson - the owner of Jack's 47. All inclusive venues can be great if you're all about convenience, but you lose the ability to choose all of your own vendors.2. Finding vendors that can execute your vision is key when planning a wedding.3. Planning a wedding from afar might take 2-3 trips in order to complete all the vendor interviews, samplings, and scouting out venues.Pistons & Prosecco is a wedding industry podcast hosted by Bryce Bjornson - the owner of Jack's 47.
