This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief rolls into Statesville, North Carolina—a city once hailed as the “liquor capital of the world”, where whiskey-making wasn't just a trade, it was the lifeblood of the region. He heads to Southern Distilling Company, where that spirit of craftsmanship and community is alive and well. There, he sits down with founder and owner Pete Barger, a visionary reviving Statesville's legacy sip by sip. With a rocks glass of their rich wheated bourbon in hand, Big Chief listens as Pete shares the deep roots of whiskey in Western Carolina—and how Southern Distilling is carrying that torch into a bold new era. So this episode is the first of our 2024 Spooky Season and we begin with a few haunting tales of phantom trains. We begin in Washington DC for a story about Lincoln's Funeral train and how it would reappear at night years afterwards chugging it's way down the tracks attended by skeletons and sepulcheral figures. Then we go to Maco Station in North Carolina to meet a signalman killed during a crash whose signal light would appear again and again forcing the company to put a signalman with two lanterns at Maco Station to stop trains from stopping for the phantom signalman. Then we go back to North Carolina and examine the Bostian Bridge train wreck, and it's phantom that still appears crossing the old bridge. Finally we go to Frenchtown Road in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and see a ghost train that is still seen to this day. Arthur talks Detroit: Become Human in her corner and packed full of the usual banter and insanity. Click to Subscribe: https://bit.ly/Youtube-Subscribe-SoapDirt Days of our Lives on NBC Peacock sets a thrilling scene this week as Leo Stark (Greg Rikaart) confronts his deceitful mother, Diana Colville (Judith Chapman). A storyline from the late '80s is revived, stirring up questions regarding Leo's paternity. Diana, back then, had claimed John Black (Drake Hogestyn) to be Leo's father. Now, the popular soap opera teases a potential twist in the tale. Previously, Diana had attempted to steal John from Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) and had even poisoned her. Arrested for attempted murder, Diana confessed to tampering with the DNA test that had confirmed John as Leo's father. This revelation devastated Leo and upset John. This week, Leo, currently in therapy with Marlena, decides to confront his mother in Statesville prison. As Leo prepares his speech, it is speculated that Diana may drop another bombshell. Will she confess to lying about lying, confirming that John is indeed Leo's father? Or will she further complicate matters by admitting uncertainty about the truth on DOOL? The storyline could take an interesting turn if John is revealed to be Leo's father, providing Leo with more family and integrating him more fully into the character canvas of Salem. The confrontation with Diana promises to be a dramatic affair, potentially providing Leo with some closure and setting the stage for his new love interest, a character named Dario Hernandez played by Al Calderon. This episode reminds fans of Theresa's past with Xander, a complex history filled with deceit and lies. Back in 2016, Theresa falsely accused Xander of attempted rape, leading to his imprisonment. Mike Evans didn't start off with the dream of running a cookie empire, but that's the goal he's currently building on each and every day. He grew up surrounded by the food world but it wasn't the path he took originally. But a desire for entrepreneurship and a discovery on the internet about the possibility of warm cookies straight from a vending machine launched his company, Alibi Cookies. It started with that unique idea. A vending machine that serves up the perfect cookie for your snacking needs. Then it grew to a brick-and-mortar, the first location in Dogtown. And from there it continues to grow – all within just a few short years. We sat down with Mike to talk about the journey and the advice he has for other young entrepreneurs. Hope you're hungry because there's a lot of cookie chatter in this conversation. Locations in Dogtown, Kirkwood, Edwardsville and Statesville, NC. You can find the vending machine in Dogtown and Rolla, Mo.

Tim Johnson II Meet Tim Johnson II, President of Tim Johnson Landscaping (TJL), from Statesville, North Carolina. Tim's entrepreneurial journey started at just 12 years old when he learned the importance of hard work. Wanting to drive at 16, he began mowing lawns, laying the foundation for TJL. Tim's academic and athletic pursuits led him to NC A&T, where he found a love for turf and horticulture. Armed with a degree in Environmental Horticulture and a certificate in Entrepreneurship, Tim returned from a brief stint in the Colorado Rockies organization in 2009 to join forces with his father. Together, they transformed TJL from a small, part-time venture into a thriving landscaping and horticulture business. Outside of the office, Tim is a devoted family man, with a loving wife, Jenni, and two adorable children, Eleanor and Tim III (TJ). His passions extend beyond the business realm, encompassing family, church, baseball, landscaping, gardening, classic cars, travel, and business. A typical day at TJL for Tim is dynamic, with tasks ranging from overseeing site visits, checking on crews, and visiting customers to collaborating with the operations and admin team. His favorite aspect of Tim Johnson Landscaping? The people—team members, clients, and partners. Tim Johnson Sr. Tim Johnson Sr, Chairman at Tim Johnson Landscaping (TJL), brings over two decades of experience to the company. Raised in the fertilizer business, Tim developed a strong work ethic early on, spending countless hours maintaining his mother's yard. With a successful 19-year career in Corporate America, where he achieved the remarkable feat of being the #1 salesperson among 8,000 employees, Tim transitioned to his true passion over 24 years ago—landscaping. A typical day for Tim involves three distinct phases: a morning kick-off, mid-day focus on sales and business, and a careful close to ensure everyone returns safely. His favorite aspect of TJL is witnessing the growth of the employees. Outside of work, Tim enjoys collecting and spending quality time with his family—his wife Joyce, daughters Angela and Vanessa, and son Tim II, whom he's immensely proud of. His weekends are often dedicated to leisurely rides and the exploration of different types of Bourbon. Tim holds a 2-year college degree and is a licensed landscape contractor, reflecting his commitment to professionalism and expertise in the field. The best advice he ever received was to wait 24 hours before addressing a concern, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful communication. Tim Johnson Sr is not just a leader at TJL but a dedicated family man with a deep appreciation for the simple joys in life.

The hero's journey traces a main character who goes on an adventure, is victorious in a decisive crisis, and comes home changed or transformed. Country artist, philanthropist, veteran, and North Carolina native Rockie Lynne's life story is truly a hero's journey. From his humble beginnings of being left at the door of Barium Springs Home for Children, to touring the world, selling hundreds of thousands of records, and writing songs recorded by superstars, you can say Rockie's narrative is the stuff of American folklore. Rockie grew up in Statesville, North Carolina, and was adopted by a Southern Baptist family of limited means. He grew up on Statesville's dirt roads, and they led him to anthemic success in the entertainment world as a triple threat: a world-class songwriter, a captivating performer, and a diversely accomplished instrumentalist. Where I Belong deftly merges a musician's quest for authentic self-expression with a touching search for familial lineage. There's Rockie's all-consuming love of the guitar which spans picking out licks on a second hand record player to his post-Army dreams of becoming the next Eddie Van Halen. Incidentally, these finely-honed chops remain intact, and they are a staple of Rockie's music, dazzlingly displayed in his live-show duels with his fiddle player, Dirk Dowell. A profound chapter in Where I Belong is Rockie meeting his biological father, Clyde Holloway. The pair share a powerful moment when Clyde gifts Rockie with his prized Martin D35, a guitar that he had owned most of his adult life. “When he gave me that guitar, I felt a closeness to him that didn't exist before,” Rockie says. Clyde's guitar has since become an integral part of Rockie's artistry as a player and a composer because of the significance of its lineage. The newly-penned “My Father's Guitar,” a single from Love, out March 29th, commemorates this moving moment. After hundreds and hundreds of watering-hole one-nighters, Rockie got his big break being signed personally by then Universal Music Group CEO Doug Morris. He issued his self-titled solo debut in 2006, and landed three singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. After Universal South folded, Rockie, an accomplished engineer, producer, and owner of his own recording studio, Tone Studios in Statesville, pushed ahead releasing nine solo albums to date. Rockie has generously harnessed the expanse of his public platform in service of others. He is a veteran, having served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, and this legacy is close to Rockie's heart. He often performs for patriotic and military events, and his original songs are regularly licensed for use in conjunction with veteran and patriotic-themed programming. In 2004, Rockie co-founded the Tribute to the Troops motorcycle ride to raise funds and awareness for America's fallen soldiers and their families. Today, Rockie is back in Statesville where he has a stable and loving family and his own recording studio in which he nurtures local talent, and around town he's mythologized as an Elvis-like figure with his chiseled-face handsomeness, his down-to-earth charms, and his immense artistic gifts. Looking back on his journey, and through the process of making the documentary and connecting with his biological family for the first time, Rockie reflects: “I went from feeling unloved to knowing I'm loved, and that I've always been loved. I found my roots—I am somebody from somewhere.”https://www.rockielynne.com/Support the showThanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/
