In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are joined by Curtis Himstedt, known on trail as Easily Forgotten. Easily Forgotten's backpacking resume is bananas. A partial list of his adventures includes the Annapurna Circuit, Pembrokeshire Coastal Path in Wales, the GR10, Tour du Mont Blanc, Yorkshire Dales High Way, South Downs Way, and Cotswold Way in England, the Triple Crown in the U.S., the Tahoe Rim Trail, and a continuous yo-yo of the Appalachian Trail and Long Trail between 2023-2024. Curtis takes us through these treks, especially the ones we haven't covered on the podcast before, shares how his first divorce inspired him to get into thru-hiking, explains why he feels more like himself on trail than in “the real world,” and gives us a preview of his upcoming adventures as he continues trekking strong into his 60s.  We wrap the show with news of a major gear retailer accused of ties to forced labor, a new navigation app you'll want on your radar for 2025, the triple crown of the worst fashion trends, a debate on how to inform someone of their LNT violation, what we'd replace our hands with if given the choice, and much more. Joining me as my guests for this episode are Elin Heron and Callum James. Elin is returning to Some Other Sphere, having first been interviewed by me in the very early days of the podcast. She is a writer and musician, a talented tarot reader and a speaker of Welsh. Callum is a poet, artist, bookseller and magical practitioner. Both have long been close friends and 2024 saw them each publish new works - Jude by Elin, which is her debut novel and The South Downs: Paths of the Dead by Callum, which details his experience of completing the South Downs Way, an ancient walking route in Southern England. In Jude, Fifteen-year-old Nick has just finished his GSCEs and is stuck at home in the seaside village of Brexenham. What starts as a boring summer quickly transforms, as he meets Jude Fletcher, a wild and otherworldly boy. Nick is pulled into another world, but the disappearance of local girl, Jemma Cox, hangs over the community, and is something that runs farther back than anybody realises. The South Downs is partly a grimoire of the walk Callum undertook, partly a linear topography, and partly a treatise on necromancy. It recognises the folklore, spirits, and the magic of a place and Callum writes as one who does this magic, speaks to these spirits, and follows this lore. In the interview I talk with Elin and Callum about their writing and their friendship, how the ideas for their recent publications came about and how their approach to writing them developed. This leads into a wide-ranging discussion, covering themes such as the role of the imagination and imaginal thinking in otherworldly encounters, the connections between the dead and the landscape, and the nature of otherworldly entities such as The Green Man, a character who features prominently in Jude. I also get to share a couple of my own unusual experiences with them as part of our conversation. Further information about Elin can be found at her website https://www.elinheron.co.uk/ and you can order a copy of Jude from her publisher, Lucent Dreaming. Callum's website is https://www.mercurysbrother.com/ and you can order a copy of The South Downs: Paths of the Dead from Broken Sleep Books.  If you would like to support the upkeep of Some Other Sphere you can make a donation via Ko-fi. In this Bucket List episode, host Aaron Millar recounts the most audacious, tipsiest, and ridiculous hike of his life: a 100-mile pub crawl across the entire length of the South Downs National Park, near his hometown of Brighton England. “Should you ever happen to find yourself walking with only one boot on in the middle of the night,” Aaron writes, “the one thing you don't want to read when you open the guidebook is – ‘the path climbs gently through a field of stingy nettles and large piles of cow dung.' Nonetheless, having undertaken the challenge of walking the entire 100-mile length of the South Downs Way, from Eastbourne to Winchester, this was precisely where I found myself on only my second day on the trail.” The South Downs Way has been walked by traders, drovers, and pilgrims for hundreds of years. Because of that a network of old Coaching Inns has sprung up along the trail where weary travelers could rest for the night, grab some dinner and pint of ale. Centuries later many are still standing, and it's possible to walk the entire trail stopping at them for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a few drinks in between. 100-miles – shoeless or not – is a long way, but it's worth every inch of the effort because this part of the world is overflowing with gentle landscapes, ancient history, and warm welcoming people. Not to mention a good pint or two. DO THIS PUB CRAWL YOURSELF! You can find out more information about the South Downs Way, and South Downs National Park at www.southdowns.gov.uk It's possible to work out the route of the pub crawl yourself, or drop Aaron a line for the insider tips: info@armchair-explorer.com CONNECT WITH US If you enjoy the show, please subscribe on whatever podcast player you're reading this on right now. The Circuit of Success Podcast with Brett Gilliland

35 years ago, Andy Brown paid his way through college by carrying out street interviews for advertising agencies. This taught him not to be shy and got him hooked on advertising. Fast forward, and Andy now has over 30 years of experience as an award-winning adviser and coach for people-based businesses, helping them to grow sustainably and increase their value. He's done this by enabling founders and leaders to ‘make better decisions, more quickly', as one client put it.   He's also the author of ‘The Emotional Overdraft: 10 simple changes for balancing business success and wellbeing' a book that shot straight to Amazon's #1 bestseller spot when it launched earlier in 2024. It also received Amazon's ‘Most Gifted' badge. The book is written for entrepreneurs, leaders, and founders and articulates the often-overlooked mental and physical costs of leadership. Its mission? To eliminate the damage inflicted on individuals, businesses, and communities from the avoidable burden of emotional overdraft.  Outside work, Andy is most likely to be found inside the American Express Stadium, cheering on long-time love, Brighton & Hove Albion, or else rambling the rolling hill of the South Downs Way near his home in Dorset.   The Emotional Overdraft is available on Amazon and more information can be found at www.emotionaloverdraft.com. Andy Brown can be found on Linkedin and Instagram @andybrownauthor   In today's fast-paced and demanding world, finding a balance between professional success and personal well-being can often be elusive. However, in a series of insightful podcast episodes, Brett Gilliland and guest Andy Brown shed light on the importance of maintaining this delicate equilibrium. Andy emphasizes the concept of emotional overdraft, where constantly pushing ourselves without taking time to recharge can lead to burnout. He shares personal anecdotes and valuable insights on habits, decision-making, and the significance of self-care. One key takeaway from the discussions is the need for resilience to prevent burnout. Andy highlights the importance of recognizing when we are emotionally depleted and taking proactive steps to recharge. This could involve engaging in activities that bring us joy, spending quality time with loved ones, or simply taking a break from work. By prioritizing self-care and making time for rejuvenation, entrepreneurs can ensure they have the mental and emotional energy needed to sustain their professional success in the long run. Another crucial aspect discussed is the power of habits and mindset shifts. Andy emphasizes the impact of small, consistent changes in our daily routines that can significantly improve our overall well-being. By consciously choosing positive habits and adopting a growth mindset, entrepreneurs can cultivate a culture of learning and growth within their teams. This not only enhances individual and business performance but also creates an environment where everyone feels supported and motivated to achieve their full potential. In this episode featuring Brett Gilliland and Andy Brown, expect to hear valuable insights into the importance of maintaining a balance between professional success and personal well-being. By understanding the concept of emotional overdraft, practicing resilience, and prioritizing self-care, entrepreneurs can prevent burnout and sustain their success in the long term. Additionally, by focusing on habits, mindset shifts, and strategic hiring decisions, individuals and businesses can foster a culture of growth and learning, leading to increased performance and fulfillment.

Joy is...When You Can't See It.After an early career characterised by hours at a computer, Charlie Harpur turned his back on desk work and embraced the physical elements of gardening. When not working as a Landscape Designer and Gardener, he is an impressive trail and ultra-runner who, in 2019, became the British 100km champion. His other achievements include finishing 3rd Brit at the CCC by UTMB and taking the win at Centurion Running's South Downs Way 100.Charlie epitomises the strength that comes through vulnerability, and I was humbled by how reflective and open he was in sharing about his complex journey with running and mental health, both past and present. We talked about building emotional armouries; the connectivity brought by natural neural networks; comparison culture and seeing the person behind the results; the lure of the great unknown; how plants and running can save your life, and why we would all benefit from stopping to hug the tree.Charlie and I chatted for a while after we finished recording and agreed that ideas around diversity in trail running that we touched on, in terms of life experience and body type, should not in any way detract from the need to continue advocating and addressing the issues that prevail with representation and inclusion in the sport. Charlie also dove further into his experiences with overtraining and underfueling, which led to hormonal imbalances and greatly impacted his physical and mental health, and the need for more conversations around this. We are hopefully going to schedule a follow up episode for him to share his story, as part of the process of starting those conversations. Follow: @charlie.harpur Hosted on Acast. In this episode join me, Anni Townend, as I share the power of a walk and talk conversation. For many years, and for as long as I can remember I have loved walking. I grew up in West Yorkshire and every Saturday walked with my family through fields and woodland close to where my father's mother lived in a rented cottage on a farm with her sister. These afternoons were the highlight of my week and were some of the best times that we had as a family. We walked and talked, as we roamed through fields avoiding cows and climbing over styles. As a teenager some of the easiest and at the same time most difficult conversations that I had with my father were when we were walking the two of us, side by side, often in the rain or fog somewhere on the Pennine Way.Some thirty years ago I moved to a small semi-detached cottage on the South Downs Way, and over the past 10 years have incorporated the walk and talk, side by side conversation into my work as a leadership partner and executive coach to senior teams and senior leaders, whether that is in person or virtually. In person people meet me on the South Downs Way and we walk and talk, side by side; virtually we are both on our phones walking and talking - whether in person or virtually we pause, we stop, we listen, we notice as part of the coaching conversation paying attention to everything that is around us, looking up and looking down, feeling the ground beneath our feet, the air on our skin as part of becoming more conscious and clear on the way forward. If you would like to find out more about the Coaching Walk and Talk as part of team working and, or for yourself please get in touch with me Anni Townend. Episode 37 Simple Truths From The Pilgrim's Way

Michael Crane Live: Business Tips and Inspiration

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2021 39:48

In this episode of the show, Michael and Simon are once more embarking on a long walk. Having completed the South Downs Way, they are now following the Pilgrims Way from Southwark to Canterbury. This is the trail immortalized in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales but was a well-used pilgrimage route before Chaucer and his companions made it famous. HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY This walk is very different to the previous one, and Simon and Michael reflect on the similarities and differences of walking these two well-known paths. The Pilgrims Way offers greater diversity in the environment they walkthrough. For one thing, there are more obvious signs of the history of the route, and of the country. Michael and Simon consider the impact of history on the present day, and how we can draw lessons from the past. They discuss what the route, and the experience of walking it, might have been like for those pilgrims centuries ago. The historical sites and green spaces are broken up by industrial parks, a clear change from that long-ago experience. ROUTES AND MAPS Another big difference is the need for a map. The South Downs way is clearly signposted throughout, and it would be almost impossible to get lost. But the Pilgrim's Way isn't clearly marked, so they needed to refer frequently to the map. This led, of course, to a comparison with business. Many business owners find themselves going off-track, and they may not have a clear map to refer to recover their direction. Simon shares some great insights and pointers for how business owners can create their own map, and how best to use it to their advantage. Each time they veered off the path, they would realise, consult the map, and get themselves back to where they needed to be. But that is not the only lesson to be drawn from this. There is also the fact that they were walking this road together. GROUPS AND GURUS In the early days of setting up and running a business, entrepreneurs can feel lonely. They don't know where to go for advice, or who to trust. They may turn to the so-called business gurus for help, but while many of them offer great information, they're not all as good as each other, and it's not always easy to tell them apart. Michael talks briefly of his own experience. Simon is a great proponent of groups. Not just networking groups, but peer-to-peer support. He refers to a fantastic historical example that included some stars of the business world and then goes on to talk about how people can access this kind of support today. The benefit of a peer support group is that it grows into a tightly knit unit, where each member supports the others, cheers them on, celebrates their success, and offers practical support and advice to help solve problems. There are a number of opportunities available to get involved in this, or similar activities, sponsored by the government. Listen in to hear more details. KINGS SUMMIT Simon also talks about the King's Summit, an annual business event that he runs. This year, they are back to meeting in person, and one of the outcomes planned for the event is that attendees can connect with like-minded business people, and leave with the beginnings of a peer-to-peer support group established. There is much more to the summit though, and to find out what's on offer and how to access it, with a spectacular ticket price, listen in to the show. PILGRIM'S WAY – TO RECAP Michael and Simon walk together and talk together. They discuss aspects of their own businesses and business in general. They share insights and tips that benefit any business owner, whether just starting out, or already well on their way to their destination.

Michael Crane Live: Business Tips and Inspiration

Winning mindsets Liz Taylor joked that it took her 20 years to become an overnight success! Success takes time, commitment, and consistency. But what is it that keeps people motivated, putting in that time and effort consistently? In today's show, Michael and Simon look back over a recently completed challenge and talk about how their experience parallels their experience in the business. Regular listeners to the podcast will already be familiar with this trek and the ups and downs of the experience – both physical and metaphorical. They talk about scientific research into determination and persistence, and about the lessons they have learnt, and how they have applied those lessons to their own, very different businesses—each creating success in their individual ways. Walking and talking Simon and Michael reflect on their recently completed walk along the South Downs Way. A tremendous achievement that took the initiative, planning and stamina. They can identify the different phases of the walk, the beginning and end, which both bring their own energy and momentum and the middle, the “grunt” phase, where you need more determination and self-discipline to keep going. They talk about how this is like starting a business. The initial phase is full of energy and enthusiasm, where everything is new and exciting. And then when that passes, what is it that will keep the business owner, the entrepreneur going? Once you've entered the grunting phase of creating and building a business, what stops the successful person from giving up? This is crucial knowledge for anyone who is considering or is already setting up and running a business. And while the hurdles faced by each person may feel unique, there are enough similarities and points of overlap to learn from each other. They have plenty of information and ideas to share here, alongside their own personal experiences. But, as Simon says, three out of four start-ups fail in the first five years. So what is it that keeps that fourth business going? And how can you give yourself the tools and strategies to be a successful fourth business? Listen in for more tips and motivation. The Rat Race Experiments on rats in the 1930s and 40s give us some insight into working for rewards. Rats in a maze were given rewards, and then their speed and effort were measured as they ran towards the goal. The closer they got, the faster they ran, the harder they worked. We need to be rewarded for our efforts if we are going to continue. It's essential to remember this during the grunting phase. It's easy to set the big goals, the big vision. But what keeps us working towards that, day in and day out? Working harder and faster Simon and Michael provide practical tips that you can apply to help your own business journey. They share some of the tools they personally use to keep their energy and motivation high and keep themselves motivated and running towards their rewards. They discuss the benefits of the right kind of network, of making the best of coaches, following thought-leaders, and how to harness the mundane habits of daily life to get you through the grunt phases of business and life and into the euphoric phases that carry their own momentum. If you are an entrepreneur, you need your own motivational toolkit. You need to build a bank of resources and know-how to keep yourself and your team pulling harder and faster so you can capture those rewards.

Entrepreneurship is not taught in school, how can we improve the pitfall? South Downs Way We started in October 2020 during lockdown walking The South Downs Way and last week, we walked stage 10 out of 12 from Housedean to Alfriston, ending at St Andrew's Church. During the lockdown, walking and talking is truly amazing, we have found that while walking and talking, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and the office is truly amazing. The mind needs a place to settle down, it really needs to dis-connect with the normal and give it the space to come alive with fresh exciting, thought-provoking ideas that have a profound impact, if you spark the creative side of your mind to flow. Since, starting the walk-in Winchester, some 90 miles ago, we have gone through all the challenges you face in business. If you break the walk up into three equal sections, there has clearly been the euphoria of starting the walk, the middle bit we will call the grunt phase, where you just want to get it done, this is the middle part, and now as we enter the last third of the walk we are once again feeling euphoric. If you Financial Independence Entrepreneurship & financial independence is a fascinating subject and one we feel needs to be taught in school, arguably this is why we do business. We feel Secondary Schools have inconsistent standards, with regards to teach in basic financial skills. College students are not taught about how to manage their finance, despite many taken on £1,000s of pounds in student loans and credit card debt to pay for school. The result is a younger generation, facing, financial deficits without a solid foundation for how to save, invest, and grow. Why is entrepreneurship not taught in school? was on the agenda as we walked through some of the most glorious countryside the country has to offer, from the rolling hills to the winding paths, passing through some of the most picturesque little villages imaginable. Not somewhere, I would like to live, but quite simply amazing for the inhabitants that have made the place home. Home is where the heart is. Thanks for listening! Please comment, like, and share. But as the press requests and celebrity party invited poured, Frank chose to step out of the limelight and head home, back to Winchester and the Meon Valley where he spent the first part of his life, to walk the South Downs Way. For this programme Frank returns to the area to find out more about its rich Saxon history and its unique wildlife habitats, and to explore how this area shaped him as a person and as a musician, with songs like 'Take Me Home' and 'Wessex Boy' drawing so strongly from the landscape. Despite entering on the back of a bet with a friend, having won the first ultra he entered, the 2016 Beacons Ultra, his third-place finish was the best result any European had ever achieved in the history of the race. Tom astounded once again in 2018 when he won the 101km CCC race at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB). It was the pinnacle of an incredibly successful racing year, which also saw him take the top spot – and break course records – at the Coastal Challenge Costa Rica and the South Downs Way 50. A British Army Captain, Tom was little known to the ultrarunning world until 2017 but is now one of the world's leading ultra-athletes. At the end of this episode, Tom springs a surprise by announcing his biggest goal for 2021. My guest in this episode is Frit Sarita Tam - she's an adventure filmmaker and photographer, rock climber, hiker, paddle boarder and more! Frit's introduction to the outdoors was by no means gentle - a 50km, 16 hour charity hike on the South Downs Way with no previous hiking experience. But it sparked a fascination with spending time outside and since then, she's consciously taken baby-steps (as she calls them) towards a more outdoorsy career and life. Those small moves forward have led her to taking up micro adventures after work, new outdoor hobbies, filming a documentary about a paddle boarding record and working for the Bear Grylls Survival Academy. Frit is a British Chinese lesbian and she's also passionate about trying to help other people in marginalised groups feel that the outdoors is for them too. I hope you enjoy this episode and Frit's story. Listen out for her tips for an outdoorsy life and don't forget that at the end of the podcast there's the relaxing minute of sounds from nature, recorded by some of you! My answer: “Yes, it absolutely is.” I went through the same process when I worked on my first walking book, Alone on the South Downs Way, which just became available in its second edition. Despite the fact that I enjoy reading books about other people's walking adventures, I wondered if my story was actually worth telling. Thankfully, I did. Breakfast With Boz Presented by Wahoo

Last summer 4 friends took on the South Downs Way - an ancient 100-mile ridgeline that spans the southeast coast of England. Starting in Winchester and finishing in East Bourne the historic chalk path has over 3500m of climbing and not a car in sight, just rolling steep hills as far as the eye can see. The South Downs was the training ground of UK cycling legend Sean Yates, the third UK rider to wear the Yellow Jersey. Now his son Liam Yates carries on the tradition, joined by mates Neil Philips, Sophie Edmondson, and Anna Mcleod. In these strange times of isolation, this short film is a reminder to all of the simple joys of cycling with friends. A joy that for the time being must remain a memory. Please do not travel to the South Downs during this period of lockdown, it is a beautiful ancient land and it isn't going anywhere.

Adam says: I am 53 years of age and I was born and bred in South London. I moved to Sussex 20 years ago and now very much call Sussex my home. I have always been interested in myths and legends and old stories and folklore. I came to paganism through the Folklore of the trees. Whilst trying to learn how to identify the different English trees some 17 years ago, I stumbled across the Ogham language and it fascinated me. This in turn led me to the path of Druidry. A path I still walk today. I love the bardic element to Druidry, and I have as a result studied the various old tales and folklore associated with these blessed Isles. My Druidry led me to start writing short stories and poems again. Many of these poems and tales centred around the wheel of the year and the cycles of nature. Many of them also got their first public performance during the Eistedfodd section of the Open Rituals held by the Anderida Gorsedd. The Gorsedd meets on a hill beneath the feet of the Log man of Wilmington. A chalk figure in East Sussex. That is where the name of My Blog and my You tube channel comes from. I have been honoured to have been awarded the title of Chief Bard of Anderida on three separate occasions. This episode has by far the largest cast of walkers we’ve ever assembled – and the most musicians.  The lead singer of Oysterband John Jones started walking from gig to gig and singing on the way long before our podcast was invented. He’s done it all over the country and he’s usually accompanied by a bunch of fans who call themselves the Reluctant Ramblers. On a scorching hot summer’s day, we joined them for a walk over Old Winchester Hill, along part of the South Downs Way and the Meon Valley to the Wickham Festival. On top of the hill John and his band perform "Waking Through Ithonside". After lunch at the pub they give us “Ferryman” and on arrival at the festival the very appropriate “I Will Never Stop Moving”. Along the way John reflects on creativity and the effect of a recent brush with cancer on his view of life and making music  It is a life-affirming journey through quintessential English countryside with one of folk rock’s leading singers.   Become a patron of Folk on Foot at www.patreon.com/folkonfoot.   Today’s Guest I'm back again, with another solo episode! This week's topic is inspired by my recent walk along the 100-mile South Downs Way. This journey was very, very different from the first time I walked the trail: the first time, I focused on the destination more than the journey; this time, I focused the journey more than the destination. I know people always say that it's important to focus on the journey, and not the destination, but I don't agree with that. It's a delicate balance, because you kind of have to focus on both. In this episode, I discuss how to apply this concept to life.   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn Why you need to focus on both the journey AND the destination How to balance your focus between the journey and the destination Whether or not we always have to know where we're going How to find joy in the journey Why it's important to evaluate the different paths to reach our goals How reviewing our progress along the way can increase the joy in our journey   Things I Discussed 318 Holly Worton ~ How to Be Goal Driven & Still Allow Yourself Flexibility 317 Holly Worton ~ Know Yourself: How to Answer the Question of “Where Am I Going?” 304 Holly Worton ~ How To Prioritize When You Can’t Do It All   Connect With Holly Website Facebook Instagram Twitter Pinterest Google+ LinkedIn   How to Subscribe Click here to subscribe via iTunes Click here to subscribe via RSS Click here to subscribe via Stitcher   Help Spread the Word If you enjoyed this episode, please head on over to iTunes and kindly leave us a rating and a review! Clare Balding walks the The South Downs, from Bo Peep to Alfriston, in the company of writers June Goodfield and Lynne Truss. They've both been involved in a project for local people to write a new version of Eleanor Farjeon's poem, A Sussex Alphabet. Eleanor may be best known for the words to the much loved hymn Morning Has Broken. June and Lynne adore the South Downs although Lynne admits to being something of a timid walker, happier to be in a group and to carry a big stick. The day's walk inspired Clare to add her own contribution to the enterprise, after Amanda Elms of the South Downs National Park, explains the lifecycle of the Damselfly D is for Damselfly Summer's golden glow started to fade With a walk ancient footsteps had made Regular steps along the grassy path To the rythmic beat of a wooden staff. Gentle chat as we looked far beyond When we spotted a stray from the nearby pond A long insect lying on the ground Not making a movement or a sound. Pairs of bright blue spots along its back Like eyes shining on a cloth of black. Wings open, their delicate filigree Paused and framed for all to see. "What is it doing?" I began, Ignorant of their brief lifespan. "It's dying" came the instant reply I swallowed hard and tried not to cry. A beautiful creature swift and fast Living the day that would be its last. Without a whimper, minus a mess A Damselfly in silent distress. Producer: Lucy Lunt.

Why has a new scheme to encourage people onto our national trails upset some people? For the first of two programmes from Sussex, Helen Mark has her running shoes on along the South Downs Way to find out about a project to encourage long-distance runners out into the countryside. The scheme has sparked controversy with a petition launched against the installation of electronic boxes on several of our 15 national trails. Trailblaze is a pilot project which has been launched by events company Endurance Life in partnership with Natural England to allow runners to take up the challenge of a long distance route whenever they want to rather than as part of a large event. The aim is to run as far as they would like to go, whenever they choose, and enter an electronic timing tag into boxes fitted at points along the way which records their progress. The scheme is currently operating on several of our national trails and the organisers say that this has been created by a team of trail runners who feel that the joy of running is increased greatly when it takes place in a stunning landscape. But walkers and outdoor enthusiasts are questioning the need for this scheme. Many people are concerned about the aesthetics of the scheme and what they see as the 'commercialisation' of the countryside. The electronic boxes, which appear at various points along the trails, have caused concern amongst traditionalists who see them as unnecessary and ugly and there is also concern about the pressure on the footpaths and how much the natural environment will be affected and damaged. For this week's Open Country, Helen Mark dons her running shoes and heads out onto the South Down Way where she meets Stuart Mills, a keen runner who has taken up the Trailblaze challenge. Helen also hears from Andrew Barker of Endurance Life and Tess Jackson, from Natural England who are behind the scheme about their reasons for setting it up. Nigel Buxton, whose home is close to the national trail and who moved there specifically to enjoy walking on the chalk of the Downs, tells Helen about his unhappiness with the electronic boxes that are found along the South Downs Way and Helen hears from outdoor writer, Mark Richards, about his concern for the welfare of the paths that we walk.
