Running 44@60 Podcast - plotting Trevor Lee's journey to the 2021 44 mile Cornwall Classic Quarter
In this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast photographer, videographer, trail, fell and ultra runner Toby Lowe shares some great insights and advice into the world of self navigation fell and trail running as well as the film he has made about Allie Bailey and her Arc of Attrition 100 in 2023.The film - entitled ‘Allie' is to be premiered at the The Cornwall Running Show 2024 at 3pm on Sunday January 14th at the Heartlands event centre in Cornwall. In the first part of the episode we talk about the OMM, the Original Mountain Marathon which started in 1968 and in 2023 was held in the Snowdonia area.Toby explains how the event works including self-navigation, self-sufficiency (you have to carry everything you need for two days including camping and cooking gear) and how you have no idea about the course until you are handed a map on the start line. Toby's top tips are to do its of strength work as part of your training, including running in a fully laden pack and during the event don't follow others (they may not be going in the right direction) instead focus on your own navigation skills. OMM is teams of two with certain time allowances between starting and arriving at the overnight campsite.Find out more about the 2024 OM here: https://theomm.com/original-mountain-marathon/events/Toby also talks about the fell running series on Dartmoor, encouraging listeners to take part in some of the 12 race series which in 2024 starts on April 20th.Find out more via the South West Fell Runners website: https://swfellrunners.ukToby's running plans for 2024 include the The FellsMan 100 https://fellsman.org.ukDon't forget The Cornwall Running Show 2024 will be held on Sunday January 14th at the Heartlands event centre – I will be there encouraging visitors to the show to come and do a two minute recording with me about their running plans for 2024This is episode 135 of the Running 44@60 podcast. Fell runner Julie Carter made a running pilgrimage to visit Gateshead in north east England where her ancestor John Nowell setup the Gateshead Harriers running group. We discuss her book "Makin a Mackem" which talks about her journey, mental health, the benefits of running, her family history and how she found out about her ancestors and met Sir Brendan Foster along the way.
Colin Kirk-Potter grew up running on the fells and a career as a Royal Marine meant fitness was always going to be central to his life. Back when he joined the Marines, a day on Dartmoor involved brutal training but these days he loves nothing more than to run around its trails and fells - to the stage where he's even written a book about the best routes. Colin's running has seen him take on extreme races all around the world, including the Bob Graham Round and the Ultra-Trail Du Mont-Blanc, where he even beat ultra running legend Scott Jurek. But perhaps his greatest challenge came when he struggled with PTSD after serving in Afghanistan. Life in 'civvy street' saw him drinking too much and picking fights, but it was running which helped him to rediscover himself and find peace. Running Tales spoke to Colin about why running like a toddler is good for you, opening a running shop and becoming coach, and exactly how he came to beat one of the greatest runners of all time... -------------------------------- You can order Colin's book, Dartmoor Trail and Fell Running: 31 Great Runs, on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dartmoor-Trail-Fell-Running-Great/dp/1906095841

Kia ora e te whānau. Not to gush, but if Eugene and Matt did ever start a DCR book club, the first book in the curriculum would be Feet In The Clouds by Richard Askwith. For years we discussed inviting Richard on, but never had the courage to do so, until by happy chance we were prompted by a DCR listener. As well as being an author, Richard is a runner, journalist, and writer. He's most famous for Feet in the Clouds, a gorgeous book about the fell-running scene in the United Kingdom, but he's published so much brilliant writing on running - Today We Die a Little about Zatopek is one of Eugene's favourite books of all time. His latest book is The Race Against Time, about ageing and running. Eugene and Matt caught up with him at his home where he was quite bemused about the fact a trail running podcast down here would want to chat with him. Boff Whalley is an author and musician (you may remember his old band Chumbawamba and their global hit "Tubthumping"),who put "Fell Runner" as occupation on his daughter's birth certificate. Gary Devine is his mate from the Leeds punk scene of the 1980s, who is a former British champion fell runner. "Faster! Louder!" is Boff's new book, all about Gary, and fell running, and punk rock. It is a damn good book, because Boff is a damn good author.Beaming in from the Yorkshire Dales (Boff) and the Swiss Alps (where Gary now lives) to the base of the Catskill Mountains (where host Tony Fletcher resides), they answer the question on every non fell-runner's lips:What is Fell Running? They also answer the question:Why Is It Punk Rock? And over the course of a fun-filled conversation, they also discussWhy fell running does not follow designated trails. Why the shortest way to the bottom of a hill is not always the quickest. Why the shortest way to the top of a hill is not always the quickest. Why the best way to get to the pub early is to finish the race early. Why Brits join running clubs and whether that is truly punk.Whether to sniff glue or not sniff glue.Whether Gary Devine is a force of nature, was genetically predestined to be a champion, trained as hard as he partied, or whether it was a combination of all three that made him national champion. Why everyone should listen to the One Step Beyond episode with Damian Hall. The importance of women runners in fell running. The importance of protecting the environment. And the importance of getting out in nature so as to relate to that environment.Throughout, Tony resists asking Boff what a fell runner should do if he gets knocked down."Faster! Louder! How a punk rocker from Yorkshire became British Champion Fell Runner" is available through Great Northern Books.Boff Whalley can be found at https://www.facebook.com/boff.whalley if you ask nicelyGary Devine can be found running up the French Alps, if you can catch him.Tony Fletcher will be found running again, if he recovers from his fractured knee. Paddy O'Leary's path from the farm he grew up on in Wexford, Ireland to becoming an elite runner for The North Face is by no means a linear one. Long before he started running, Paddy spent much of his early 20s growing the sport of lacrosse in Ireland. It was only after an opportunity to pursue cancer research led him to San Francisco that he found his knack for racing on trails. So, we sat down with Paddy (and his charming Irish brogue) to talk about all of that and more — including, how he ended up racing on the trails (with and without a horse); the Wicklow Round; community building; and toeing the line at the oldest trail race in North America. Jim Mann is a well established ultra and endurance runner. Jim loves challenging the fells and multi day races and has conquered some of Britains most challenging races. Not content with conquering the fells and mountains across the UK, Jim also has a passion for about then environment and what races, events and the corporate world can do to minimise their impact. As Co-founder of Trees not Tees which is an initiative where events offer the planting of a tree instead of a tee shirt, that may never get used or worn and are often given away. Jim talks us through the process, the impact and scale of the issue and what events are doing and can do to work with Trees Not Tees. This was a conversation that started in 2019 and will be continued long into the future once races return to the UK. As you will hear, there is growing demand for events to become more sustainable and environmentally aware. Enjoy
As promised and highly requested myself and Jonathan have a brief chat about fell running. We literally talk all highs and lows on this one.

In this episode of NomadWolf, we are joined with mountain and ultra runner, John Kelly. Most known for being 1 of the only 15 finishers of the Barkley Marathons, John has been quite busy taking on the Fell Running scene in the UK where he currently resides. We cover the attempts that led to his success at the Barkley as well as the experiences that were necessary for him to pull of his latest accomplishment called the Grand Round. The Grand Round is comprised of 3 famous Fell Running rounds - the Bob Graham in the UK, the Paddy Buckley in Wales, and the Charlie Ramsay in Scotland. This effort was done in one continuous effort where John also cycled to each round and became the first and only person to complete this effort in 130 hours 43 minutes.Aside from just his projects in running, John has a growing family and is also a CTO for a startup he co-founded called Envelop Risk. We chat about some of the things he's focusing on building at his company as well as some lessons he's been able to take from endurance sports and apply to entrepreneurship. John also shares his main secret on how he manages to train while taking care of a family with kids and a growing company. Hint, he doesn't rely on gas. This chat with John was incredibly insightful and you can really tell from John's voice that he has been through it all. Richard Askwith is a desk-bound southern journalist – based in Northamptonshire – whose life was changed by a mid-life encounter with the unforgiving northern sport of fell-running.A decade-and-a-half of running, stumbling, shivering and getting lost in Britain's wildest mountains provided the raw material for his best-selling book, 'Feet in the Clouds: a Tale of Fell-Running and Obsession'.He is now working on a book about how big business and big government have between them squeezed most of the spontaneity out of running – and how ordinary people can reclaim their freedom and rediscover the joy of natural running.—Recorded live at the global event in Cardigan, west Wales in 2012.Watch Richard's full talk here: www.thedolectures.com/talks/richard-askwith-why-going-down-mountains-is-harder-than-going-up

My guest this week is English author Julie Carter. When she's not writing, you'll see her doing something called fell running, which is sort of what it sounds like. She runs through craggy hills, trying not to … fall. But when Julie does it, it's about more than running. It's about finding joy, sorting things out in her head, and dealing with chronic pain. Every week I interview a member of ALLi to talk about their writing and what inspires them, and why they are inspiring to other authors. Od czasu do czasu lubię Wam przybliżyć biegaczy mieszkających i startujących głównie poza Polską. Zawsze to trochę inne doświadczenia i inna perspektywa.
This mid-week, we honour a man who loves to go out on the moors.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/backseatcoaches)

There aren't many runners who have the pedigree in long distance racing as Nicky Spinks. Farmer by day, Nicky is an outstanding fell runner and has completed doubles of the UK's most difficult rounds, including double Bob Graham (England), double Paddy Buckley Round (Wales) and the double Ramsey Round (Scotland). And that's not even mentioning the slew of races including UTMB, Dragon's Back, Grand Raid Pyrenees and Grand Race Reunion. In short, she's an ultrarunning badass... and she's speaking with BBR. Packs and Peaks 3: Fell Running Get lost in the endurance sport of Fell Running by explaining how it works, what gear you need, and where you can go to get lost racing it. What the heck is Fell Running? As endurance sports go, Fell Running is about as easy as it comes. First, you run to the top of a hill. Then, when you reach the top, you run back down. The first one to run up and down the hill wins. See, simple. Or is it? Why do Fell Running? Who doesn’t like hills? It seems like throughout human history, there have been people who ask “who can run up the hill the fastest”. Fell Running is no different than any other kind of running with one very important exception -- elevation. Elevation makes Fell Running what it is because anyone can run on flat, even terrain. It’s when you add a big hill into the mix, that you have the attraction to Fell Running. And not to be left out of this is the changes we Americans make to any popular endurance sport that comes out of Europe. We take it and make it our own. So what has Fell Running become in the United States? That's right -- Mountain Running! Leave to us Americans to make everything bigger. So when you come to America, remember -- We don't Fell, we Mountain! And that is the endurance sport of Fell Running. Time to go find some hills... or... mountains to run! To quote Mr. Warren Pole, "If you fall in Fall running Fell, now you have something!" Nicky Spinks is an accomplished fell runner out of northern England. Nicky and Warren Pole join The Nation to discuss what Fell running is, its origins, and where it fits with trail and ultra running. We discuss one of the famous fell run challenges, the Bob Graham Round. Named after Bob Graham, who in June 1932 broke the Lakeland Fell record by traversing 42 fells within a 24-hour period, at the age of 42. Each summer around 100 of the most highly tuned ultra-distance fell runners will attempt the 66-mile, 27,000 ft of ascent within the allotted 24 hours. Only one in three will succeed. To date approximately 2055 people have completed the single round in 24 hours. Nicky has set records on the Bob Graham Round in previous years. In 2016, on her 10th anniversary of overcoming breast cancer, the 49-year-0ld bested the record for the DOUBLE Bob Graham Round. This covers over 132 miles, 52,000' of ascent over 84 summits. She did this in an amazing 45-1/2 hours! Video about the Bob Graham Round with Salomon Running athlete Ricky Lightfoot Nicky Spinks article re. her Double Bob Graham. Video of Nicky completing the Double Bob Graham. We also added a few words to our glossary: Tussic Moore Heather Jelly Babies Tops Clag Peet And finally, to quote Mr. Warren Pole, "If you fall in Fall running Fell, now you have something!"
