Running 44@60 Podcast - plotting Trevor Lee's journey to the 2021 44 mile Cornwall Classic Quarter
One of the UK's most prominent ultra running events, the Arc of Attrition, is happening in Cornwall on January 27-28th. There are two versions the 100 mile which starts in Coverack and then shares the same last 50 miles with 50 mile version which starts at the Minack Theatre. The sand dunes at Hayle come into play with around 14 miles to go in both events and at the end of the dunes in the final checkpoint at Godrevy. My plan is to run the Arc 50 in 2024 so now is a good time of year to practice running the dunes section in the dark, which it inevitably will be when I get there. So in this episode the Running 44@60 podcast you will hear an edited version of my run in the dark through the dunes with local personal trainer and dunes navigation expert Tracy Waite.I hope it might be useful for those of you taking part this year who may not have had a chance to practice the section through the dunes. This is episode 108 of the Running 44@60 podcast. Welcome to the theatrical podcast in which we ask a special guest the big, BIG question that nobody ever needed to ask. Having won a gold medal in the Bristol, Bath, and Somerset Tourism Awards in February, we were delighted to achieve a Silver Trophy at this year's South-West Tourism Excellence Awards. The south-west is the largest region in the English tourism awards, and the standard is exceptionally high.In this podcast, we bring you a 'top and tailed' live broadcast, courtesy of our friends at 10Radio Wiveliscombe who kindly invited Lucy and David to discuss the award and the two years of work that went in to the application. Here's a little more about the award ceremony and read our blog here! From soil to sparkles – preparing for the South-West Tourism Excellence Awards So, on April 7th, a merry band of 10 made our long and winding way in two minivans from Minehead to Sandy Park, Exeter, to celebrate. Gone were the aprons, Marigold gloves and wellies, and in their place were high heels, sparkles, fur shawls and dinner jackets. The glittering black-tie ceremony brought together the finalists, their guests, and sponsors around the south-west. What a delight it was for everyone to celebrate achievements in person for the first time in two years! We were proud to be amongst more than 90 stand-out businesses, and world-class attractions including:Minack Theatre in PenzanceSlimbridge Wetland Centre in GloucesterStonehenge in WiltshireWorld-class hotels including The Royal Crescent Hotel and Spa in Bath and Carlyon Bay Hotel in Cornwall.Exmoor Character Cottages are excellent for Exmoor!Receiving a silver trophy alongside some of the region's – and country's – biggest names in tourism is an enormous accolade. It is such an honour for us as a small holiday accommodation business. We are so proud to fly the flag for our fantastic region of Exmoor and the businesses that depend on tourism. We all know how important it is to attain and service a level of excellence guests seek and expect…. Especially after the two years we have all experienced.Thank you to our exceptional, experienced teamThere is a large team behind the four luxury cottages that make up this business, some of whom celebrated on the night. Our professional and loyal housekeeping crew are exceptional – working with dedication and commitment through extremely busy and demanding changeovers. Cleaning to COVID-19 protocols added a new layer of complexity, but nothing stops them in their tracks. Sam and Nick have transformed our outdoor spaces into beautiful oases of calm in the garden. Indeed, the gardens really do delight all visitors, from four-legged to two. Dave has hot tubs under control, ably assisted by Gail and Jackie, and the occasional support from Steve, our original hot tub guru. Marketing (including our well-loved podcast), PR, website, SEO and accounts are key to this business. Fundamental to this award were the hours put in by David, Gabrielle, Lynne, Brooke and Jenny.

Kate remembers both music and theatre from her Methodist church and her local amateur dramatic society, where many of her family took roles on the stage – and they had to find a suitable place for Kate. So backstage was where she began, and when their performance of Oliver! went on tour to the Minack Theatre, Kate was surprised to discover that Stage Management was a real profession, and dug out a dusty drama school prospectus on her return, and applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama. From her early roles as a dresser and an ASM, to attempting to get a job as a follow-spot operator under the name of Kate Moss, Kate chats through her journey which saw her join Opera North over 20 years ago having never seen an opera production. The One and Only Ivan is a new Disney film about a 400-pound silverback gorilla called Ivan. He lives in a suburban shopping mall with other animals where they perform in a circus owned by Mack, played by Bryan Cranston. The film is a hybrid of live action and CGI and features the voices of Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, Danny DeVito, Helen Mirren and Chaka Khan. We speak to the film's director Thea Sharrock. 40 years since Willy Russell wrote Educating Rita Stephen Tompkinson stars in an open air production at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall. Novelist Patrick Gale reviews. How dangerous is singing at a time of Covid-19? Declan Costello, Consultant Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon and an accomplished tenor, has been leading UK research to assess the risks. He joins Front Row to share the results. David Mitchell said of his recent novel Utopia Avenue – about a band - that writing about music is impossible. Former concert violinist now poet Fiona Sampson, novelist and one time cellist Patrick Gale and writer and teacher Jeffrey Boakye, whose book Hold Tight explored grime’s cultural impact, reflect on the premise that writing about music is – as the saying goes - like dancing about architecture. What made them take up the challenge in their different writing forms? Presenter: Kirsty Lang Producer: Hannah Robins
As novelist John Connolly publishes a prequel to his hugely successful Charlie Parker thriller series, he and critic Suzi Feay discuss the art of creating a prequel, both in books and on screen, from Endeavour to Hannibal Rising to The Wide Sargasso Sea. From the Minack Theatre, nestled in the cliffs of west Cornwall, to Cirencester’s Barnfest, and Brighton Open Air Theatre, many theatre-goers have turned to the great outdoors as indoor theatres remain shuttered due to Covid-19 restrictions. The Maltings Theatre in St Albans has just kicked off its 6th annual outdoor festival, set in a Roman Theatre built in 140AD, with a programme that includes The Merry Wives of Windsor, Henry V and HMS Pinafore. Its Artistic Director, Adam Nichols, joins John Wilson to discuss the joys, challenges and opportunities of outdoor theatre. Around the UK, the pandemic has caused arts venues, organisations and establishments to have to make dramatic cuts to their output and costs just to stay afloat. With no definite end in sight when they can start generating income again, redundancies seem inevitable. Plus Suzi Feay comments on the publication of 25 books by female authors who will be known, for the first time, by their real names. All of them are women who wrote under male pen-names - including George Eliot, whose Middlemarch will now be republished with the name Mary Anne Evans on the cover. Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Dymphna Flynn Studio Manager: Giles Aspen
In this episode, James is joined by Zoe Curnow, Executive Director of Cornwall's Minack Theatre, and Adam Nichols, Artistic Director of The Maltings Theatre in St Albans. The three of them discuss the decision-making process that went into cancelling their 2020 seasons during the lockdown, the programming they're using to revive outdoor theatre and music, and the unique situation for outdoor theatre during the COVID-19 outbreak. From the Producer's Office is a series of informal podcasts with Opera Holland Park’s Director of Opera, James Clutton. In conversation with creatives and collaborators across the industry, we explore the process of putting opera on stage, and how the artists involved approach their craft.
Having left Oxford University with a degree in English, Anna Kemp went to Madrid, initially to teach. With a huge interest in TV and Film, and an urgent desire to learn Spanish, Anna decided to take a video production course, specialising in continuity - the art of ensuring that scenes follow each other without inaccuracies. Very quickly, this resulted in work within the Spanish TV industry and a very steep learning process, followed by work in film.By chance, whilst working on the film ‘Al Sur de Granada’ based on Gerald Brenan’s book of his time spend living in Las Alpujarras, Anna and her husband discovered to village of Laroles and it was here that the couple bought a home. Teaching theatre to the children of the village provided the inspiration behind Anna’s next project: the creation of an open-air theatre and the inauguration of a theatre festival that would bring top quality drama to this rural corner of Spain.Me Vuelves Lorca, the drama festival, has just completed its third year and through the support of the local ayuntamiento, villagers and volunteers, a beautiful theatre (based on the Cornish clifftop Minack Theatre) has been created using the existing stone threshing circles.Support the show (http://patreon.com/IanRutter)

Felicity Evans visits the Minack Theatre at Porthcurno, in the far west of Cornwall. Built into the rocky cliffs overlooking the sea, the theatre was planned, built and financed by one determined woman - Rowena Cade. Local storyteller Mark Harandon has researched and re-created the character of Billy Rawlings, Cade's gardener, who worked for her for 40 years and helped to build the theatre. Mark, as Billy, leads Felicity around the theatre telling stories collected from the family and people who knew him, and reminiscing about how the theatre was built. Felicity explores the coast further, visiting the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum, an area which was the hub of international cable communications from 1870-1970. In WWII secret tunnels were dug by Cornish miners to house an underground building and the entire telegraph operations. These bomb proof/gas proof tunnels provided 14 secure cables out of the UK to its allies. Going east along the coast path from Porthcurno, near the village of Treen, stands The Logan Rock, a massive boulder perched on the edge of a cliff, and locally known as a rocking stone. Felicity hears how legend has it that it could be rocked with one finger, until it was rocked so much by a rowdy group of naval seamen 1824, that it was dislodged from its perch. This apparently upset local residents for whom the rock was a tourist attraction and source of income, who complained so much that the seamen were forced to restore it - at some effort!
