Martin Butcher, he simply loves running. Martin will have a go at any distance from 5k to 96 miles...and he does. Martin describes himself as a lucky runner who has got to do so many things through running.Martins interest in running started as a result of a venture scouts trip of a lifetime to climb Mount Aconcagua (22,838 ft) in Argentina in the year 2000, and the fitness bug was caught. From Argentina to the Dunfermline half marathon in 2003 and the running journey continued from there to the present day.A massive part of Martins running journey is the connections and friends Martin has made. It's no surprise that Martin is a founding member of #teamlifeWe speak a lot about the West Highland Way during the chat, Martin has a deep love for that specific Scottish trail, but he will also happily run a mile in 4mins 52 10 days after running 53 miles!Supporting others who run is another passion of Martins, and he quite happily drives back and forth between checkpoints making sure his runner (and others) is fuelled and ready to go for the next section of the event.Martin describes his favourite event as the West Highland Way of 2023, and it's an edge of the seat listen as he describes the highs, lows and occasional diva moment along the way!Favourite film and book for Martin...Forrest Gump is the answer to both, maybe Forrest inspired the world famous Butcher Sprint, all is described by the man himself in this episode.A well kent face on the Scottish running scene, Martin is never shy to share a smile, a cuddle and words of encouragement to anyone who might benefit from one or all three.Inspirational too in so many ways for friends, family and people he may never even know. Martin is there for ya!An example...Paul Snelling Martin's cousin caught the bug after seeing what Martin was up to, and Paul is in the middle of running 31 marathons in 31 days raising funds for Zurich Community Trust. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are joined by Curtis Himstedt, known on trail as Easily Forgotten. Easily Forgotten's backpacking resume is bananas. A partial list of his adventures includes the Annapurna Circuit, Pembrokeshire Coastal Path in Wales, the GR10, Tour du Mont Blanc, Yorkshire Dales High Way, South Downs Way, and Cotswold Way in England, the Triple Crown in the U.S., the Tahoe Rim Trail, and a continuous yo-yo of the Appalachian Trail and Long Trail between 2023-2024. Curtis takes us through these treks, especially the ones we haven't covered on the podcast before, shares how his first divorce inspired him to get into thru-hiking, explains why he feels more like himself on trail than in “the real world,” and gives us a preview of his upcoming adventures as he continues trekking strong into his 60s.  We wrap the show with news of a major gear retailer accused of ties to forced labor, a new navigation app you'll want on your radar for 2025, the triple crown of the worst fashion trends, a debate on how to inform someone of their LNT violation, what we'd replace our hands with if given the choice, and much more. “A walk about Paris will provide lessons in history, beauty, and in the point of life.“ – Thomas Jefferson Guest Introduction:  Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life: Travel Edition! I'm Cindy MacMillan, your host and founder of Pangea World Travel Agency. If you're a midlife professional, an empty nester, or a woman with a heart for adventure, you're right where you belong. This isn't just another travel podcast—it's an invitation to look at how travel shapes our lives, inspiring us to grow, to see the world in new ways, and to rediscover ourselves in the process. Together with incredible guests, we'll dive into heartfelt stories of adventure, resilience, and transformation, exploring not only hidden travel gems but those unforgettable, life-changing moments. So, grab your coffee, get comfortable, and let's set off on this journey—together. Now, it's my pleasure to introduce today's guest, Amber Haggerty. Amber Haggerty is the blogger and traveler behind AmberEverywhere.com, where she writes about living abroad and traveling in the US and Europe. Originally from Colorado, she moved to Ireland in 2020 and has been living in Paris, France, since 2023. In this episode, she'll share her journey of moving abroad, the challenges she faced in adapting to new cultures, and how her adventures, including hiking the West Highland Way in Scotland, have shaped her perspective. Here's a glimpse of our conversation:  Welcome to the podcast Amber. ·       There are so many nice things about being in Paris. One of the best parts is how central it is—it's really easy to travel. With three airports, you can catch flights around Europe or even farther without much hassle. That's definitely a big advantage. On the other hand, the language difference has been a challenge.  ·       One thing I love about travel is how it fosters connection. It reminds me that people all over the world, in their own unique ways, are striving to make the world a better place. As a traveler, you occasionally get to witness and experience these efforts, which is both humbling and inspiring.  ·       Just as a side note:  World Kindness Day was celebrated globally on November 13, 2024, and Amber and I recorded this episode two days later, on November 15, 2024.  ·       My number one piece of advice would be to start building a community. In most places with a sizable expat population, you can usually find groups like "Americans in [City]" or "Women in [City]." For example, groups like "Americans in Paris" or "Women in Paris" are great starting points. Depending on the size of the location, you might even find smaller, more niche groups. Connecting with these communities can make a huge difference.  ·       On a different day, my answer might change, but right now, I'm thinking about my trip to Colombia in 2018.  ·       The opportunity to travel together is wonderful because you spend the first few days catching up. After that, you create new experiences, giving you even more to talk about. Travel with your friends. It's really fun.  ·       My 18-year-old self was unstoppable. She was fierce and carved her own path, tooth and nail. I'm so grateful for her courage. I would just say, thank you for brazenly ignoring anyone who told you that you couldn't do something—that was truly fierce.  You can find Amber Haggerty at: Instagram   Thank you for joining me on Exploring the Seasons of Life: Travel Edition! I'm Cindy MacMillan—your host, travel advisor, and transformational coach. It's been an absolute joy to share this adventure with you today. If you enjoyed today's episode, be sure to subscribe, share with your friends, and leave a review—it helps us reach more travelers just like you. Your holiday will be self-guided, so you walk at your own pace on your own timetable, stopping to savor a tea break or grabbing a meal or a pint at the pub.  Your luggage is transported to each evening's charming inn, so all you have to carry is your day pack. Breakfast is included, so either stop for lunch or pack a lunch for your walk, and then enjoy a local restaurant in the historic village that is your home for the night. Meet plenty of locals and fellow international walkers on these famous and historic old trading paths.  Since they were the original route that folks moved from town to town, they naturally chose the easiest route, so most of today's routes are fairly modest - and remember that they don't have many high mountains in the UK regardless!  However, you will need to train so your feet and body are used to walking long distances day after day. ScotWays (Scottish Rights of Way and Access Society) have published the sixth edition of Scottish Hill Tracks in around 100 years. The book launches on Saturday 28th September. Over the last five years hundreds of volunteers have helped to compile the book. Mark meets with ScotWays Director Tim Simons to discuss the book and its importance. The importance of seed saving is increasingly being recognised across the world as a way of establishing resilience in the natural environment. It is also the principle behind the tree nursery at Corrary Farm near Glenelg where there is a big push to expand native woodland cover in the area using trees grown from locally collected seed. Rachel went there recently and met Manager Rowan Doff who explained their approach.Last year, Mark visited Loch Katrine in the Trossachs to hear about an ambitious plan to build a look-out tower to give splendid views over the loch and hills beyond. The build was completed a couple of months ago and has already attracted many visitors to the site which back in the early 1800s was a regular stomping ground for Sir Walter Scott, William and Dorothy Wordsworth and John Keats. The project was co-ordinated by the Sir Walter Scott Steamship Trust and James Fraser from the Trust gave Mark a guided tour. The turntable ferry operating on Kyle Rhea between Glenelg and Skye is the very last of its kind still in operation in Scotland, and maybe even, the world. It's now run as a social enterprise, and Rachel stepped aboard to hear all about it from General Manager, Jo Crawford. In the latest edition of Scotland Outdoors, Helen Needham joins Aberdeenshire based writer Ian Grosz on the walk described in his essay Sacred Mountain; a dawn walk up Bennachie at the time of the Autumn equinox. The national Tegelwippen (tile whipping) contest is underway in Netherlands, as cities compete to remove the most paving slabs to greenify gardens and rewild urban spaces. This year marks the fourth annual contest, and Remco Moen Marcar, co-founder of the creative agency Frank Lee, who is behind the contest, joins Mark and Rachel live to tell us more.In recent years – since their re-introduction – white tailed sea eagles have been on many people's ‘must see' list. One of the finest places to spot them is around Glenelg in the West Highlands. They are regularly seen near Kylerhea which is a real magnet for all sorts of wildlife. Rachel meets Cammy McMurdo, who explains why so many creatures are attracted to the place.A listener got in touch last week about how much they enjoyed an archive piece from Mark's trip along the West Highland Way. We hear a snippet from this special trip.

On this episode we chat to pone very determined lady.I first met Nic when we were over at the European Multisport Champs in Portugal, she had travelled over with former guest Robert Myler, who suggested Nic should come on and share her story. Nic says " Im a full-time working mum with 2 young children. Sport is my hobby and I love it. I have run from a small age, my first run I remember was a 1.5 mile road race when I was about 12 and then the school cross country races on the sand dunes in Irvine with the wind battering me. That didn't put me off and I did my first half marathon at 17 and the London Marathon at 21.  My main achievements to date are completing the triple crown in 2022 – the Highland Fling, West Highland Way ultra and Devil O' the Highlands races, completing Celtman solo extreme triathlon and representing GBR in the European Duathlon Championships. I run because I enjoy it. It's an escape from the real world and I get thinking space. I love the outdoors and this gives me a chance to see some amazing scenery. I always run on holiday (at the request of the family) as I find all the great places we can go adventuring to later. I'm also quite competitive and enjoy the races…the muddier the better! I'm a role model to my children and others showing that us girls / mums can do these things and inspire the next generation. My best and worst run moments: My children being at the end of my ultra races and running with me to cross the finish line, they are my inspiration and love seeing their faces as I near the end. Worst was when I had an undetected stress fracture in my foot which eventually broke, 3 operations over 3 years until it healed and was told at one point I'd never run again. In my spare time I coach, I was a tennis coach for 20 years until injury struck but I have now retrained and qualified as a personal trainer, running and triathlon coach with Glasgow Triathlon Club. I have been leading trail runs for many years."You can follow Nic on Instagram @epicrunningtrails_nicand her website is https://epictrailsrunning.co.ukYou Can Follow us  onInstagram @amp_1967X : agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteor our YouTube Channel AMP GBWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.

Hello my sassy witches and a warm welcome back to another episode of Season of the Witch with Rowan Oaken. This week, we voyage into rites of passage and transformational journeys, shedding light on transitions, trauma and much more. Unseen Transitions: I delve into the unnoticed transitions of life, painting a contrast with celebrated milestones like graduations, and unravel a yearning for rites of passage. Quest for Purpose: We'll explore the allure of quests and primal urge to seek purpose, journeying through diverse cultural practices like the Vision Quest of certain indigenous cultures, while reflecting on modern-day quests in the Western realm. Unveiling the Cauldron of Candor: Before we step onto today's enchanted path, I unveil a new segment, Cauldron of Candor, a sassy, witchy alcove for pondering life's riddles. Send in your musings to have them discussed. You can do that over on Instagram @sotwwithrowan or via email (seasonofthewitchpodcast@gmail.com). Make sure to have Cauldron of Candor (COC) in the subject line. Tales of Transformational Treks: Through a tapestry of personal narrative, I recount a transformative venture on the West Highland Way, intertwining threads of parenthood, personal tribulations, and the elusive quest for answers amidst the tranquil yet voiceless Scottish vistas. Mystique of the Mountains: Diving into my introspective voyage, we'll explore how the mountains may magnify, rather than mollify, personal traumas, and how the quest for transformation often circles back to the mundane realms of daily existence. Illusion of Transformation: I reflect on the glorified perception of trailhead transformations and the realisation that sometimes the journey doesn't morph us; it merely escorts us to the next threshold, urging an appreciation for the small, unnoticed steps amidst the grandiose quest for purpose. Redefining Rites of Passage: We'll unearth alternative avenues to self-discovery and transformation that don't demand grand gestures or epic quests. I encourage a recognition of our daily slog, the unnoticed trails we navigate every day, emphasising that perhaps, the real adventure is the one we embark upon each day amidst the mundane. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sotwwithrowan/message

Tina and Cas discovered that walking is a great way of relieving some of the symptoms and in the six years he has been with them they have already completed several long distance routes including the West Highland Way - twice! They are currently walking the Thames Path - 185 miles of the river from sea to source in preparation for walking the Portuguese Camino this Summer. They discuss the amazing trail community, what it's like to settle in and feel at home in the woods and they answer the question: "Why would you hike the entire Appalachian Trail, twice?!" Steve's Bio: "I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2014, at the age of 62, as a complete hiking novice. Vowing never to hike again, I wrote a couple of books about my journey, and started podcasting, initially as a method of publicizing my books. Yet the podcast grew far beyond my books and kept me engaged with the hiking community. Since then, I have attempted (and failed) three times on the John Muir Trail, completed the Camino de Santiago (Les Francés), the West Highland Way in Scotland, and a second Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Then, in August / September 2022, I was able to successfully complete the TSX Challenge in California, when I summited Mt Whitney, to erase the memories of my unsuccessful JMT attempts. Going forward into my 70s, I have little doubt that new adventures will tempt me once more. I'm still up for a challenge!" "Just before the pandemic, I walked 96 miles (154.5 km) in seven days on the West Highland Way in Scotland, though I was hardly alone in this endeavor. About 250 people start the walk each day, including the amazing group of primary women that I walked with, indicative of both the attraction of the trail and the popularity of this form of physical activity. All types of people were walking. There were young people and old people, some fit and some not so obviously so. The walk was exhilarating and at the same time hard and very long. Much of the great feeling of satisfaction I had at the end of every day was the feeling of achievement at having physically and emotionally pushed my own limits." Paula Rochon is a geriatrician. Natisha Webb wrote to me recently about my West Highland Way trip, telling me she'd already booked to go on the same hike next year. We corresponded, and it turns out that she also thru-hiked the AT in 2021, having been "Covided" off in 2020. Naturally, I wanted her to tell her story, and she agreed to come on the show. As you'll hear, she is a pragmatic woman, making sensible decisions when decisions are required. If you'd like to learn more about Natisha and her hiking, and van, life, check out her Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/calypso_chronicles/. Additionally, you can check out at her YouTube page at https://youtube.com/user/uglybarnicle We caught up with two of our Class of 2022 this week, neither of whom is actually on the trail right now! Katie Westling, who we followed in 2021, is heading back to the Appalachian Trail in early June to complete the last 500 or so miles of her hike. She tells us her plans. This week's show is all about my recent "saunter" on the West Highland Way in Scotland. As many of you know, I'd never hiked before I moved to the US, and I certainly didn't know about this little gem in Scotland. I'd originally intended to couple a quicker hike on the WHW with a similarly fast walk on Hadrian's Wall Path. However, as you'll hear, fate intervened, and I had one of my most satisfying hikes. I've also added a lot more pictures this week (corresponding with the day they were taken), because I didn't share many of them on Facebook or Instagram. For those of you who are interested, my itinerary was as follows: Day 1 - from Milngavie (Mile Zero) to Drymen Camping (Mile 11.0), an 11 mile day Day 2 - from Drymen Camping (Mile 11.0) to Balmaha (Mile 19.2), an 8.2 mile day Day 3 - from Balmaha (Mile 19.2) to Rowardennan (Mile 27.6), an 8.4 mile day Day 4 - from Rowardennan (Mile 27.6) to Inverarnan (Mile 41.5), a 13.9 mile day Day 5 - from Inverarnan (Mile 41.5) to Tyndrum (Mile 53.3), an 11.8 mile day Day 6 - from Tyndrum (Mile 53.3) to The Bridge of Orchy (Mile 60.3), a 7 mile day Day 7 - from The Bridge of Orchy (Mile 60.3) to Glencoe "Pods" (Mile 72.4), a 12.1 mile day Day 8 - from Glencoe "Pods" (Mile 72.4) to Kinlochleven (Mile 81.3), an 8.9 mile day Day 9 - from Kinlochleven (Mile 81.3) to Fort William (Mile 96.8), a 15.5 mile day.
