This is a re published episode but it was pretty epic. Unfortunately I didn't quite nail the sound, so it is not my best work, which is a shame and I apologise for that. I am joined by performance psychologist Jonah Oliver, who works with a number of professional athletes, surgeons, entrepreneurs and business leaders and after this chat I think you will know why.Jonah does a fantastic job of making the complex word of performance psychology easy to digest in a relaxed manner which makes you (or at least has made me) review our relationship with pressure. I hope you enjoy this chat and as always if you have a minute it would be great if you could leave us a review wherever you listen to your podcasts. In this electrifying episode of Healthy Waves, host Sana is joined by Nico Verresen — a 6-time Muay Thai and MMA champion turned elite performance psychologist. Together, they explore how to stay cool, calm, and deeply engaged in high-pressure situations. Drawing from neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and decades of training elite athletes and CEOs, Nico shares powerful mindset shifts and easy-to-apply techniques that anyone can use to turn stress into strength. Whether you're battling boardroom anxiety, juggling family life, or facing internal fears, this episode offers practical tools to transform tension into triumph. About the Guest:Nico Verresen is a former world champion fighter and now a sought-after performance psychologist. He works with Olympians, Fortune 500 CEOs, and high performers across industries to unlock flow states and resilience under pressure. His approach blends science, movement, and mindset to help people transform stress into their superpower. Key Takeaways: Stress isn't the enemy—your mindset is. Nico explains how the belief that stress is harmful actually causes more harm than stress itself. Embrace, don't escape. Rather than fighting stress, Nico suggests seeing it as a biological signal of something important, much like our ancestors did with real threats. Learn to ground yourself. Simple tools like the physiological sigh and progressive muscle relaxation can calm the body without suppressing energy. Mental rehearsal works. Visualizing how you'll respond to stress before it hits prepares the brain to stay steady under pressure. Practical for everyone. From elite athletes to working parents in unfulfilling jobs, these techniques work because they align the body and mind through awareness and self-regulation. Bubble method for thoughts. One of the most creative tools: naming and acknowledging negative thoughts, then releasing them like soap bubbles to reduce their emotional grip. In this episode of The Paul Taylor Podcast, I sit down with Performance Psychologist, author, facilitator, and coach, Graham Winter. We explore the fascinating intersection of athletic and corporate excellence, uncovering why the principles that drive gold medal performances can transform business leadership—and why some approaches that work in sports could actually derail your corporate team. From managing strong personalities and building unshakeable team cohesion to achieving sustainable peak performance without burnout, this conversation delivers practical insights for anyone leading high-stakes teams. Whether you're a corporate leader looking to enhance team dynamics, an athlete seeking to optimise your mental game, or simply someone interested in the psychology of excellence, you'll discover evidence-based strategies for creating environments where both psychological safety and accountability can flourish. Key Topics: Career Path: Moving between sports and business psychology Sport vs Business: The key differences in coaching athletes versus corporate professionals. Managing Egos: How to work with high-achieving individuals who have strong personalities. Team Unity: What it takes to get different people working together effectively as one team. Human Connection: Why relationships and shared purpose are crucial for team success. Safe Communication: How to create an environment where people feel safe to speak up while maintaining high standards. Sustainable Success: Ways to maintain peak performance without burning out over time. Key Takeaways: Build consistent daily habits rather than chasing quick wins to achieve sustained high performance. Create team alignment by establishing a clear mission statement, defining each person's role, and scheduling regular social connection time. Set boundaries around your perfectionist tendencies by scheduling mandatory recovery periods after intense work phases. Foster psychological safety by explicitly rewarding constructive criticism while still holding people accountable to high standards. Protect your energy by tracking your daily energy levels and scheduling high-stakes work during your peak performance hours. When leading high performers, validate their confidence while gently guiding them to develop self-awareness through regular feedback sessions. Start each project by clearly defining both its purpose and how it will strengthen key relationships in your network. Angela is joined by Michael Gervais, an expert in mastery, to explore the profound impact of identity and thoughtfulness in personal and professional growth. They discuss the concept of mastery as a commitment to artistic expression at the edge of one's capabilities, emphasising the importance of being present and aware in everyday life. Michael also shares insights from his extensive interviews with top performers, highlighting the distinction between striving to be the best versus being one's best. Dr. Dana Sinclair is a registered psychologist. She holds doctorates from the University of Cambridge and the University of Ottawa. Dana is a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia, and a member of the American Psychological Association.
