"Don't be afraid to make something." The DJ and composer discusses the vulnerability of the creative process, returning to the piano and touring her latest album. Laurel Halo has been circling around the club music world for a number of years, but she's only recently entered the echelons of jazz and contemporary classical. Originally from Michigan, she went to music school in New York before moving to Berlin, and now Los Angeles, where she composed her 2023 album, Atlas—a release that's been met with widespread critical acclaim. She also played alongside Moritz von Oswald in his jazz outfit the Moritz von Oswald Trio, and released a number of eclectic, UK-tinged dance floor records on underground giants like Hyperdub and Livity Sound. In this RA Exchange, Laurel Halo discusses the new direction of her music and what it's been like to tour it live with cellist Leila Bordreuil. She also talks about her creative inspiration (namely, the Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul and books by surrealist writers like Ursula K. Le Guin and Italo Calvino), the practice of aesthetic minimalism more generally and the methods she uses to create subtle variations in pieces that are slow to evolve. Listen to the episode in full.
Simon Aussel is known for a particularly wild DJing style and leftfield bassy bangers, and it's his curious and playful approach to clubland that's won him loyal fans over the years. Whether photographing drink tokens from gigs or creating an 8-bit version of his debut album on a Game Boy cartridge, he seems to approach every endeavour with childlike joy and wonder—rare qualities in an industry that can leave so many jaded. The Nantes-born, Paris-based artist's love of club culture, digging and world-building has set him on a blazing path in club music. He's released an exceptionally wide range of music, including a Memphis rap tape for Trilogy Tapes, dubstep-trap-jazz hybrids with Egyptian singer Abdullah Miniawy and deadly hard drum for Livity Sound. His mixes, meanwhile, are fast becoming DJ lore thanks to his knack for connecting seemingly opposed genres like new wave and fast techno. Look no further than his now-infamous Dekmantel Selectors set from 2021 or a marathon back-to-back with Skee Mask in 2022. As the French DJ gets more comfortable with story-telling, he's getting more personal and focusing on deeper, slower sounds. That's evident on this RA Podcast—six months in the works—which incorporates woozy downtempo, weighty dub and bleepy beats. Of course, in the chaotic middle section there's plenty of huge basslines, plus old-school electro, acidic techno and even a bouncy edit of the Montell Jordan classic "This Is How We Do It." Showcasing his quirks, influences and growth, this is Simo Cell in prime time. @simocell Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/934

He might hail from France but @simocell has always worn his love for UK music on his sleeve. It is no wonder then that his intricate broken beats, bass heavy grooves and halftime techno has come on vital labels like Livity Sound and The Trilogy Tapes. He is a frequent collaborator too, with everyone from Peter van Hoesen to Hodge, but his own signature sound design always stands out. The TEMƎT Music head's Selectors set from 2021 remains one of the most impressive multi-genre showcases we have heard and this week the Paris-based DJ repeats that trick once more. Over the course of 100 minutes, Simo Cell goes deep into everything he has always been about: heavy rhythms designed to move the body, heady synth designs that are intricate yet powerful, and a masterful control of energy and flow which means he can lock in a dance floor whether firing out high-speed juke or teasing with slow and supple dub. It's a whirlwind ride that will awaken every fibre of your being.
In this episode of INSIGHTS, we have the privilege of being joined by a true stalwart of the UK bass music scene. If you've been paying even the slightest bit of attention over the years to that signature strain of wonky, skewed, bass driven techno, as purveyed by seminal labels such as Hessle Audio, Timedance, Livity Sound, Hemlock and Idle Hands, you will certainly be familiar with Bruce, who boasts a slew of landmark releases on all of the aforementioned imprints. We look back over his incredible career as well as discussing some extremely exciting new projects, most notably his new party TURN '23 which debuts at Strange Brew in Bristol on the Saturday 28th January with an absolutely ludicrous cast of greats from across the electronic music spectrum - DJ Marcelle, Nazar, Shelley Parker, Biped, Sybil, Aura Tekh and of course, Bruce himself.Over the course of this interview, we begin by discussing Larry's early years and formative experiences, meeting Ploy and Batu whilst studying at Bath Uni, moving to Bristol, the city's club culture and how two emails from Ben UFO and Peverelist in 2014 springboard his production career. We then discuss some of his career-highlights, both as a producer and DJ before moving onto his current projects - XRA with fellow Timedance and Hessle Audio heavyweight, Lurka, as well as his new solo live set. We conclude by talking about his Get Loose parties, before previewing his tantalising forthcoming event TURN '23!We are giving away three tickets for TURN '23 to one lucky winner! We're delighted to arrive at our 400th podcast with CARISTA (@iamcarista) at the helm. Since winning a DJ competition a decade ago, the Utrecht native has not stopped. She is now a firm part of the European underground who has platformed plenty of talent on her own United Identities label, regularly plays our own festivals and hosts on NTS while also emerging as a fine producer in her own right. She has a knack for digging far and wide and playing anything from soul to house, garage to electric sounds, and she proves that here. Her mix offers fresh and forthcoming music from United Identities artists Conrad Soundsystem and Sansouni, classics from Louie Vega and Kerri Chandler and cutting-edge grooves from Livity Sound. It's a sensuous deep house selection to start with before smoothly moving through the gears with jazzy inflections, body popping bass rhythms and jacked-up percussive cuts. Across one essential hour, it encapsulates precisely what CARISTA is all about. Here's to the next 400!
eviewing their 2021 EP on Livity Sound, RA's Henry Ivry said that the duo—along with collaborator DJ Polo—represented a "micro-history of jungle, garage, dubstep and, of course, their bread-and-butter, UK funky." Now, you might not be familiar with them, but these two London producers, LR Groove and Razzler Man, have been doing their thing in the UK capital for nearly two decades, both together and apart. They reunited in 2018, inspired by the changing and cyclical tastes of UK dance music fans and, perhaps most importantly, the international rise of South African dance music and its interplay with other genres around the world. The duo have now released two records for Livity Sound, which is among the biggest badges of honour you can get in this sector of electronic music. Effortlessly combining UK funky, dubstep and snatches of gqom and amapiano, the duo's music feels organically adventurous, but hardly trendy—in fact, the space and reverb of their beats still sounds a lot like the music they were associated back in the '00s, in the best way. Their RA Podcast is a journey into the musical borderlines they operate, made up mostly of their group tracks and solo, along with cuts from like-minded artists such as Scratcha DVA, KG and Karizma. It's a whole lot of UK and a little bit South Africa, the sound of Black British dance music in flux and perpetual evolution. Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/844
@monotronique hails from Kharkiv, which is one of the cities affected most by the war in Ukraine. Before the invasion, he had become one of its most definitive DJs thanks to his residency at Zhivot. That was the platform that helped him break out on the European scene with his brand mix of house, techno and bass. Drawing on those genres, his productions pair minimalism with experimentalism and have come on the likes of Livity Sound, Opal Tapes and Banoffee Pies. This week's mix is an epic one spread across two and a half hours which showcases Monotronique's ability to start slow and build a fantastic mood. Nothing is rushed here as the electronics go from deep and dubby to smooth and seductive. House, techno and raved-up breaks all build the pressure then well-placed moments of euphoria break out to release the pressure before things build once again. It's a brilliantly balanced mix from this essential Ukrainian.
Mantis Radio 342 - Razbibriga Serbia's Razbibriga brings to the show a fierce techno throwdown for today's guest mix. Peverelist is one of those artist's whose legacy is already assured. His labels Punch Drunk and Livity Sound have been at the cutting edge of their own unique musical niches for more than a decade. Fusing their native Bristol's history of dub, sound system culture and bass, their output deals in endlessly fascinating genre mutations that continue to push electronic music forward. Peverelist's own captivating rhythms and precise sound designs have always been at the heart of that, bridging the gap between hypnotic techno and heavy bass. And that's the path he heads down on this week's mix. The one hour selection weaves a thread through all the sounds you'd find in his orbit - stripped back beat science and Gqom, UK funky and mesmeric dub techno. Always stripped back but never devoid of character, this is physical yet meditative music that taps into that deep desire we all have inside: to move to the sound of pounding drums.
Since 2016, London based Forest Drive West has been building a rapidly growing catalogue of releases, receiving critical acclaim for records on labels such as Livity Sound, Hidden Hawaii and Rupture London. He's a dope selector too. Enjoy!

Having already released on underground labels such as Livity Sound and Trule, Bakongo has made a serious impact over the past year or two, capturing the ears of dancers and collectors even without the benefit of a sub-heavy dancefloor to showcase his productions, which blend elements of “techno, garage, dub and broken beats’, spun and reinterpreted with understanding and imagination. Better known as Roska, in a recent, wide-ranging interview with Beatport, Goodlitt pondered “What happens to funky the other nine months of the year when there’s no sun shining?”. Just as it begins to appear again, Goodlitt switches to Bakongo and answers this question fair-and-square, generously gifting Phantasy an hour full of upcoming material, collaborations and edits, as well as material from the likes of Chrissy, DJ Gregory and LSDXOXO. Collectively, it amounts to irresistible body music, brightly beaming down but not without a touch of grit and darkness. Accompanying the mix, Bakongo spoke to John Loveless in May 2021, via email. OOPS! So on our last one we said we were done for the year because of the Santa bizness but fuck it, we managed to get another show in before overdosing on the Quality Streets. Starting off on a bit of an ambient tip with Soft Boi and Coil before we turn a corner into some dubbed out works and wonky club numbers from labels like SVBKVLT, Livity Sound and Time Dance. There's ravey breaks from labels like Sneaker Social Club and Hoover Sound too. Watch out for those Ase Manual and E-Unity tunes too, total ear worm. Much of dance music might have been on pause in 2020, but not Roska. The vital underground powerhouse has continued to put out a steady stream of high quality singles both solo and in collaboration with the likes of Syren Rivers, Ruby Wood and Serocee. He collected them all together this summer on Eight Trax, a mini album on his own Roska Kicks & Snares which tells the story of an artist who still finds freshness in UK funky having played a key part in its initial emergence over a decade ago. On top of this, he also assumed his Bakongo alias again recently to serve up his unique take on UK rhythms with the new 3 x 2 EP on Livity Sound, which comes after years of veering into UKG, house and various other mutant strains of bass heavy music on labels like Tectonic, Rinse and Hotflush. This week he digs deep to serve up a podcast filled with a mixture of his key influences and personal favourites. "The whole theme is how genres outside of dancehall have been influenced by dancehall," he says of a sunny selection including material from Sean Paul, Major Lazor, DJ Gregory, Kenny Dope, Karizma and DJ Zinc next to plenty of his now new beats old and new. It's a real history lesson that brings us right up to the present day and beyond.

Some highlights this month include opening up with one by Elll called Flourishing Arts off a recent quarantine themed All City release - before moving on to the bitter sweet pads of Pessimist operating under his Soft Boi alias on the Climate of Fear label. Dying for that release to come out! Some just how we like it rolling dancehall from Kouslin on Livity Sound. That one’s called The Beast of Bolsover - no doubt a nod to the fiercely witty Denis Skinner, a former UK Labour MP and staunch republican known for heckling during the Queen's speech. There’s a track called Horse Mouth by East Man & Walton, making fresh use of that famous speech from the 1980 classic Babylon, and a rake of bangers from the superb Frass FM comps off Astral Black. Things get proper rowdy with Someone 2 (Vocal Mix) by Killjoy off Joyride Sound. Let us know if you locked in and catch ye next time. re:ni's secret weapon is the way she plays with rhythm with such ease. Whether banging 130bpm club tracks or nailing down slick UK techno, keeping it deep with 100bpm rollers freaking you out with acid she is a devilishly dexterous DJ. Because of this she has become an NTS regular, firm favourite at places like De School and Dimensions and counts Timedance boss Batu and the Livity Sound crew as fans. In the mix for us she serves up all sorts of futurist beats that are wired up with electronics or stripped back to more haunting and hypnotic sound worlds. Reni's ability to manipulate rhythm and texture, time and space is utterly thrilling and finds her go from slowed down dub to high octane minimalism and on to jungle with ease over the course of this slick 90 minute selection.
Hi Friends, welcome back and thanks for tuning in. That´s ESOA Podcast, the Episode number 5. This episode comes from stype. His history with electronic music started in the mid-1990s with music television. After having visited the important Berlin clubs like Tresor he began to buy records at stores such as Hardwax and Space Hall to have the tracks in his collection which weren't available on CD. The first steps as a DJ followed in 2001, leading to participate in the Tresor Award in 2004. This was followed by sets at Berghain Kantine and Suicide Circus for the Killekill-nights. Nowadays he's co-organizing fundraising parties and playing music at ://about.blank. This set is reflecting his interests for multiple styles. Techno and House serve as basis for leaving the well-known path of straight kickdrums to the territory of basslines, polyrhythms and experimental sounds. While labels like Warp are a longtime favorite, others like Ilian Tape, Livity Sound and Samurai Music turned into his regular go-to-labels. Forest Drive West is from London, and he's found a home on adventurous, bass-inclined labels like Livity Sound and Hidden Hawaii over the last few years. His music — a half-dozen mutant techno releases so far — speaks for itself. Here he presents an hour long mix ahead of his appearance at The Bunker at Market Hotel on Saturday April 13. “Mixes of club music can be quite fatiguing”, says Ali Wade. While he doesn’t DJ as much as he used to (“it’s a distraction to making music”), he still buys tracks he likes to hear loud at a party: “mostly deep, broken techno such as Donato Dozzy and Livity Sound”. UK DJ and producer Kowton admits that he is obsessed with sound. For the past five years he has been locked away in Bristol with the likes of Peverelist and Asusu working on perfecting the most hi fidelity, highly functional bass and techno that he can. It has lead him to release on influential labels like Hessle Audio, Livity Sound and Idle Hands, and last month his debut album proved his mission has been worth it: "Utility" features nine tracks of crisp, atmospheric techno that brood with urban menace. Physical, broken and punchy, the beats are designed simply to make you move your body, and they sure do that. The podcast he has served up for us (which features a number of unreleased and forthcoming tracks on Ilian Tape, Not So Much and Trilogy Tapes) marries that same sense of stripped back functionalism with clean and abstract sound design, heavy bass and high pressure beats. There is a real sense of late night mischief and subtle rave energy to it that makes the whole thing feel hugely coherent from start to finish. Modern, left of centre and rather UK centric, the Kowton sound sure is serious, but it is also hugely seductive.

Hodge wasted no time getting started. Bulldozing his way through last year with a series of releases on Hotline, Berceuse Heroique, Tempa, Livity Sound sub-label Dnuos Ytivil and more recently releasing a double-pack through Untold’s revered Hemlock imprint, the Bristol-based producer has made quite an entrance, identifying a singular sound through a series of stylistically diverse releases. Following on from the feel-good house project Outboxx, the Hodge moniker has provided an outlet to explore murky, low-end fuelled techno, echoing the percussive, bass-heavy hybrid of Livity Sound and frequent collaborator Peverelist. There’s a similar community spirit evident in his mix for us – focusing exclusively on unreleased and forthcoming material from likeminded producers such as Randomer, Logos, Gramrcy and Rhythmic Theory. Mining the fertile ground between steely, heads-down techno, the twisting rhythmic perversions of the UK’s hardcore lineage and more abstract electronics experiments, it’s a mix that harks back to the heady, dubplate-filled sets of dubstep’s recent past while remaining resolutely forward-facing. Heavy stuff. INTERVIEW + TRACKLIST > www.inverted-audio.com/peverelist Peverelist aka Tom Ford is a bastion of the Bristol music scene. Since relocating to the city in 1997 for the pure love of the music coming out of the city, mainly Jungle and Drum and Bass, Tom has established two notable record labels, 'Punch Drunk' and 'Livity Sound'. Punch Drunk being firmly rooted in Dubstep and bass music, whilst the latter is a response to the demise of Dubstep and a reflection of the UK's underground music culture. Over the past three years the Bristol trio made up of Peverelist, Kowton and Asusu have released various 12"s under the Livity Sound imprint, a vinyl only label focused on house, techno and bass music. Ahead of the release of their self titled debut CD compilation "Livity Sound" a collection of previous 12"s released on the label, we sat down with Peverelist to find out more about the label, compilation and the Bristol scene in general. The "Livity Sound" CD is released on 21st October 2013.
