Keen On Democracy
Episode 2507: Peter Leyden on How Trump is Unintentionally Making America Great Again.

Keen On Democracy

Is America screwed? Not according to the former managing editor of Wired, Peter Leyden. The creator of the Substack newsletter The Great Progression, Leyden believes that U.S. history operates in 80 year cycles and that America, empowered by Northern Californian technology, is gearing up for another remarkable period of innovation. Leyden is no MAGA fanboy, but argues that Trump is enabling the American future by destroying the Republican brand and unintentionally guaranteeing a longterm Democratic majority. It's a provocative thesis which I hope is true. But what about China? And can we really trust Silicon Valley's tech titans to make America great again? 5 Takeaways* Leyden believes America cycles through major reinventions approximately every 80 years, with previous transformations occurring after the Constitutional Convention, Civil War, and World War II.* He argues that post-WWII systems (welfare state, Pax Americana) are outdated and that Trump's presidency is accelerating their necessary dismantling.* Leyden sees an opportunity for progressives to rebuild American systems using AI, clean energy and bioengineering in more efficient, effective ways.* Leyden references economic historian Carlota Perez's theory that technological revolutions move from "Gilded Ages" (concentrated wealth/power) to "Golden Ages" (distributed benefits) through democratic intervention.* Leyden positions the US-China competition, particularly in AI development, as a fundamental contest between democratic and authoritarian approaches to organizing society with new technologies.Peter Leyden is a tech expert and thought leader on artificial intelligence, climate technologies and a more positive future through his keynote speaking, writing and advising. Leyden currently is the creator of The Great Progression: 2025 to 2050, which is a series of keynote talks, Substack essays, and his next book on our new potential to harness AI and other transformative technologies to create a much better world. He also is the founder of Reinvent Futures, advising senior leaders in strategic foresight and the impacts of these new technologies. Since coming to San Francisco to work with the founders of WIRED to start The Digital Age, he has followed the front edge of technological change and built an extraordinary network of pioneering innovators in Silicon Valley. Leyden most recently convened this network of elite tech experts through the first two years of the Generative AI Revolution as host and curator of one of the premier event series at ground zero in San Francisco — The AI Age Begins. Leyden is the former Managing Editor of WIRED, who then became the Founder and CEO of two startups that pioneered the early video mediums of first YouTube and then Zoom. He wrote two influential books on the future that went into multiple languages, including The Long Boom that foretold how the new digital economy would scale over 25 years — and largely did. Leyden began his career as a journalist covering America, then did a stint as a foreign correspondent in Asia for Newsweek, including covering the early rise of China. He has traveled to more than 50 countries around the world. He was raised in the heartland in Minnesota, graduated summa cum laude at Georgetown University, and earned two masters degrees from Columbia University.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting the daily KEEN ON show, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy interview series. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Send us a textIn light of the devastating fires in Los Angeles, I couldn't help but acknowledge this with special episode of the Life With Grief Podcast. As a Northern Californian who's no stranger to fires and other natural disasters, this episode is not only about acknowledging the tragedy that continues unfolding and showing love to the thousands upon thousands of people affected, but to address the overwhelming grief, loss, and trauma that come with such natural disasters. As encouraging as it is to see people coming together to provide relief, I also see a lack of empathy and quick judgments in many cases. It's more than just losing material items. Things that, on paper, could be easily replaced. It's livelihoods, communities, schools, homes, sentimental items, and places of comfort that are gone within a matter of hours.Today is all about the importance of compassion, the need to acknowledge the depth of this tragedy, and understanding how grief like this runs so much deeper than we realize. How to support fire relief efforts:California Fire FoundationDirect ReliefRed Cross Fire ReliefWildfire Recovery FundLos Angeles Fire Department FoundationPasadena HumaneAmerican Red Cross: LA RegionLearn more about my 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Experience: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-griefWork with me: 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Challenge: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-grief Explore the membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membership Work with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara Connect with me further: Leave a voice note through Speakpipe! https://www.speakpipe.com/LifeWithGrief Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifewithgriefpodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gains Website: https://lossesbecomegains.com/ Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journal By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. In this episode, I am having a conversation with Sally Lee Stewart, who is an amazing Mother, elementary education specialist & author, and also a wonderful oceanographer. Recently she published her first Novel " The Ange of Vanishing Stability" It's about Thea West, a Northern Californian teenager growing up in the late sixties and early seventies, who is one of five daughters trying to stay afloat amid the psychologically catastrophic dynamic between her parents—a covert and commanding mother and an ocean-yachtsman father. A talented sailor and businessman, Mr. West suffers from crippling alcoholism, with frequent rages that mask his fragility. Thea longs to know how to sail, but in her world, traversing the water is a skill that belongs only to men, and she's terrified to ask her larger-than-life father to teach her. Self-love and Self-discovery play an important role in everyone's life because it gives us immense strength to believe in ourselves and overcome any challenges.Sally is also an educator, As a clinician she always learned the background of a given child and then made a point to get to know them, their experience at school, and their likes and dislikes. One of her first questions was, when you feel anger, what do you do? One child answered, "Breathe." I was impressed. After her student surveys, she found the students felt trusting toward her and also respected her because she took the time to get to know them as autonomous beings with feelings, history, experience, and an opinion. Sally also loves to explore Ocean, She lives on a cooperatively grazed ten-acre farm in the coastal hills of Northern California and sails on the San Francisco Bay. For her upcoming expedition, she has already prepared herself and leaving tomorrow for her long water tour. But until recently, I hadn't stopped to consider the issues impacting the kids of the Bay Area in the early 2000s, during the hyphy movement: violence, crime, poverty, sexism, racism, and other forms of discrimination. These are no different from the issues we're facing today. If you look closely enough, you'll see that all these issues are rooted in capitalism and imperialism. In this episode we talk to Congresswoman Barbara Lee, who represents the East Bay, about her history of dealing with these issues while serving this community for the past 25 years; Rich Iyala, a younger San Francisco based musician who wrote a song that inspired multiple aerosol artists to write tags that read, "hyphy children got trauma(s)" and "hyphy kids got trauma,"; and T'Jon, a senior at Oakland's Fremont High school, who was born in 2006 and views the hyphy movement as a groundswell of art, culture and community.

Martha Stoumen Wines was founded in Sonoma County, CA in 2014 with the goal of recapturing a farming and winemaking culture that has all but faded away: a winemaking culture of patience. After 8 years apprenticing with minimal-intervention winegrowers around the world, Martha set out as a self-funded, first-generation winemaker to answer the question, “What does California taste like when we challenge the norm?” Our wines are made from unexpected varietals and offer new takes on Northern Californian classics. 98% of our vineyards are either certified organic or practicing organic or biodynamic farming. Over 70% of our vineyards are dry farmed, meaning we only use the water nature provides (which is tricky but very important in California). We look to serve nature and the people who live there, which for us is what expressing terroir is all about. Martha is part of the 5% of women in the CA wine industry that are owners and lead winemakers. She is proud of her stellar female-led team as well. Of the nearly two dozen wines Martha and her team make every year, blends and flavors change according to what nature dictates, but their desire to share the simple pleasures of hand-crafted Californian wine remains the same.

I can't wait to bring this conversation to you but first I want to say a heartfelt thank you to Red Mint for making today's podcast possible. Nat was born in Peru and raised in Australia by her Indigenous mother and grandmother. After working with street children in São Paulo, Brazil and Aborginal inner-city youth in Redfern, Australia, she began her degree in Social Science and Policy at the University of UNSW. Not long after, she started to work as an actress in film and television in the US, with notable roles in shows like Unreal, Dynasty and most recently as the star of ABC's The Baker and the Beauty. Despite this change she remained inwardly mindful of her privilege and responsibility to her Indigenous heritage and people. After the 2019 fires in the Amazon and Australia, Nathalie experienced a shift in consciousness that led her to drastically change not just her lifestyle, but the way she engaged with social media. She worked to become an advocate for Indigenous peoples, regenerative agriculture, the soil and the undervalued but invaluable role of fungi in our ecosystem. Nathalie is now committed to using her storytelling skills to be a voice for the voiceless — creating narratives of hope around the power of nature to regenerate and heal and the integral part humans have to play in this process. Nathalie is on the board of Kiss the Ground and the Fungi Foundation.. She works in deep devotion and service to the entire web of life, advocating in particular for the health of our soil, water, the fungí and forests. Her mission is the preservation of biodiversity, including cultural and myco-diversity on the planet. This is a beautiful conversation full of lots of insights on indigenous wisdom, the resilience and strength of nature, and ultimately our role in supporting both of these things. In the first we'll learn the history of Oak Ridge Angus, how and why they have over a decade long partnership with the Bear Republic Brewery and about the Range to Table Program where they partner with the Redwood Empire Food Bank to provide beef to Northern Californian's who are food insecure. Lastly, we'll talk about their experience with 2019's Kincade Fire which decimated their ranch. In 2 weeks we'll hear about how their 4 Angus bulls did at the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding sale.

This episode addresses the almost unprecedented precipitation in California and its effect on a Northern Californian rancher. The effects are in no way localized with extensive flooding, road closures, power outages, mudslides, property damage and loss of lives extending the length of the state. The cause has been a barrage of Atmospheric Rivers battering the state. We'd been hearing that many area ranchers were experiencing a multitude of issues in regard to recent weather. We thought we'd reach out to someone local and attempt to get a feel of the magnitude of the effects. We didn't have to go far. Justin Oldfield's ranch is 20 minutes south of Sacramento and less than 2 miles off of highway 99. Daehling Ranch was dealing with a multitude of issues.

Bradley, (author of Screaming for Pleasure: How Horror Makes You Happy and Healthy and host of the Hellbent for Horror podcast) on a fun and energetic riff on one of our oldest and most beautiful storytelling forms: the horror genre. Bradley talks to us about how the genre is tailor-made for allegory and metaphor, and how it allows us to have a safe “handshake” with our shadow-selves. We also chat about our "first-kisses" with horror, how horror can sometimes be a safe space for LGBTQIA+ community and other "cultural outcasts", and why the genre deserves respect.S.A. Bradley is the host of Hellbent For Horror, a popular 4- time Rondo Award-nominated podcast exploring all things horror across books, film, comics, and music that has been described by director Guillermo Del Toro as "well researched, articulate and entirely absorbing." He has lectured at Webster University and The College of Idaho, and alsoperformed his live show “My Horror Manifesto” in NYC and horror conventions like TusCon, FearCon, MileHi Con and more across the USA. Bradley's first book, Screaming for Pleasure: How Horror Makes You Happy and Healthy, is a thrilling ride through the horror genre, its intense effect on every generation, and how you can be enriched by horror. WHOA. Kristian Moreno may simultaneously mix two tracks fine tuning the timing and beat sequence and oddly enough, not even GAF and make something sound amazing. This multidisciplinary artist specializes in an open format style when DJing but brings influence from their more than a decade long exposure to goth, punk, techno, and new wave. Their unique sound was developed in part by exposure of many kinds -experience of multiple cultures, a bit of drugs, a lot of music, and a general anti-status quo foundation. Having residencies across the Northern Californian cities and developing their radio podcast transmissions under the demonic-pseudonym “DJ BoogyFrights,” Moreno is continuing their growth in music and expression. They're also balancing cultivation of the band “Provoker” who just signed to “YEAR0001” from Scandinavia. These original dynamics now known, Moreno's work speaks for itself and it is certainly an entertaining and well mixed hour ride. Thanks a lot Kristian; it is so good to see you develop as an artist and we know the next decade holds true promise to your craft. https://soundcloud.com/valleyghoul -C&C

From little things, big things grow… Inspiring founder & owner of Northern Californian brewery Sierra Nevada Brewing Co, Ken Grossman, is a man of passion, determination and innovation.  From humble roots, as a small West Coast craft brewery with a goal to produce 2,000 hectolitres of beer a year, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co is now a bi-coastal North American business that champions innovation, advanced energy technology & sustainability, business leadership and is now brewing 1.7 million hectolitres of beer a year from their West Coast and East Coast breweries. After learning to brew from the father of a close friend at a young age, Ken Grossman opened a homebrew supply store in downtown Chico, called The Home Brew Shop in 1976, before selling it in 1978, founding Sierra Nevada Brewing Co in 1979 and releasing their first batch of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co beer in 1980, which was an American Stout. At the time, there was no such thing as small-scale or “micro” brewery equipment in the USA and it was way too expensive to import from countries like Germany, so everything required for the brewery had to be repurposed or custom built, with Grossman travelling all over California and Oregon in search of stainless still tanks/equipment and teaching himself refrigeration and welding, so that he could fashion the majority of the new brewery out of recycled dairy equipment. In today’s inspiring chat, brought to you by @craftbeerlovin’ on Instagram and the team at Phoenix Beers, we explore vast-ranging topics including Ken Grossman as an individual, the explosion and evolution of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co, his love of hiking, sailing, fishing and diving and how Sierra Nevada got its name (it’s not as 100% obvious as you think), Sierra Nevada’s partnership with monks in a small Northern California town - brewing a series of Ovila Abbey ales inspired by Belgian Trappist monks that helped raise millions of dollars for the monastery, the brewery’s approach to innovation including the installation of an array over 10,000 solar panels and fuel cells to reduce their environmental impact in 2007 to 2017, where the transition to gas turbines and introduction of Tesla Powerpack batteries now means that Sierra Nevada produce 80-90% of their own electricity onsite!    We chat about Ken’s first trip down to Australia for Good Beer Week 2017, the creation of Sierra Nevada’s Tropical Torpedo IPA, the introduction of their 2nd brewery on the east coast in the mountains of North Carolina to reduce shipping impact and the greenfield site, which enabled Sierra Nevada to minimise the impact in its construction and design, the process that the 5-10 new small batch Sierra Nevada beers brewed every single week have to go through to become part of the core range of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co beers and a teaser of the latest beers that are soon to be joining the Sierra Nevada family including goses, sours & more! A wonderful journey and inspirational tale of a man who has pursued his passions tenaciously and evolution from one of the smallest of businesses in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges to one of the largest, most successful craft beer breweries in America! We all know great connectors in our home turfs. These are the people who, at the drop of a hat, know how to get the right people together, to talk about the right things for all the right reasons. Tsilli Pines, founder and director of (the excellent) Design Week Portland (DWP), is certainly one of Portland’s connection mavens. She possesses the uncanny skill and intuition to draw the lines between people in disparate disciplines to create magic. This gift is likely one of the reasons that DWP is a “must-attend” week, not just for design people, but for anyone who likes to be part of something bigger than themselves. A designer by trade as digital creative director at Fine in Portland, Pines doesn’t just spread the gospel of design but broader creativity as host and organizer of Creative Mornings, the global lecture series darling. Pines, like most who show honest leadership, is a renaissance person by nature and often has her fingers on the pulse of many things at any given time. Multitasking keeps it fresh — and her hometown of Portland inspires a sense of collaboration and balance, where the community comes together. A native Northern Californian, Pines feels strongly that dues are to be paid, one must put skin in the game for the right rewards and that, early in ones career, leaning towards “yes” is the right plan of action. At the heart of it all, though, it’s all about getting out there and legitimately making things happen.
