Producer/Host: R.W. Estela Hi, I'm RW Estela: Since 1991, I've been presenting A Word in Edgewise, WERU's longest-running short feature, a veritable almanac of worldly and heavenly happenings, a confluence of 21st-century life in its myriad manifestations, international and domestic, cosmopolitan and rural, often revealing, as the French say, the more things change, the more they stay the same — though not always! Sometimes in addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives, in this age of vagary and ambiguity, when chronological time is punctuated elliptically, things can quickly turn edgy and controversial, as we search for understanding amid our dialectic. Tune in Monday mornings at 7:30 a.m. for an exciting journey through space and time with a few notable birthdays thrown in for good measure during A Word in Edgewise . . . About the host: RW Estela was raised as a first-generation American in Colorado by a German mother and a Corsican-Basque father who would become a three-war veteran for the US Army, so RW was naturally a military brat and later engaged in various Vietnam-era civil-service adventures before paying his way through college by skiing for the University of Colorado, playing Boulder coffeehouses, and teaching. He has climbed all of Colorado's Fourteeners; found work as an FAA-certificated commercial pilot, a California-licensed building contractor, a publishing editor, a practitioner of Aikido, and a college professor of English; among his many interdisciplinary pursuits are the design and building of Terrell Residence Library (recently renamed the Terrell House Permaculture Living & Learning Center at the University of Maine), writing Building It In Two Languages (a bilingual dictionary of construction terminology), aerial photo documentation of two dam removals (Great Works and Veazie) on the Penobscot River, and once a week since 1991 drafting an installment of A Word In Edgewise, his essay series addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives — and WERU's oldest continuous short feature. When pandemics do not interfere, he does the Triple Crown of Maine open-water ocean swims (Peaks to Portland, Islesboro Crossing, and Nubble Light Challenge) and the Whitewater Downriver Point Series of the Maine Canoe and Kayak Racing Organization. RW is the father of two and the grandfather of three and lives with his partner Kathleen of 37 years and their two Maine Coons in Orono. Good history hoes probably think they know about Carry Nation. She was the woman who busted into saloons with a hatchet and smashed everything to booze-soaked bits! In fact, she liked smashing up bars so much that she did it again. And again! And again!! People called her crazy! And ugly! And tall! …which we all can agree is equally bad!(?)  In this episode, Kristin posits that Carry A. Nation deserves more respect than she has been given. Then again, in this episode, Kristin also tries to sell you a bubble mailer full of pig butter. So… should you really listen to anything she says? Remember, kids, history hos always cite their sources! For this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Carry A. Caroline Amelia Nation, who was often called "Hatchet Granny" or "Carry Nation," was a radical member of the temperance movement, which protested alcohol use leading up to Prohibition. Carry described herself as "a bulldog running along at the feet of Jesus, barking at what He doesn't like", and claimed a divine ordination to promote temperance by destroying bars. In today's episode, we are going to discuss just how much of a bad-ass woman Carry Amelia Nation really was.

March 9, 1901. From a jail cell in Topeka, Kansas, temperance vigilante Carry Nation is hard at work. After her latest arrest for smashing up a bar with her infamous hatchet, Nation decides to spread her message with paper and ink. The first issue of The Smasher’s Mail would be published on this day, with Nation arranging the entire endeavor from behind bars. The newsletter was only a small part of her crusade against “hell-broth,” which included everything from destroying saloons to starring in her own burlesque shows. But when considering how alcohol altered her life’s journey, were her methods really all that extreme? You're listening to a series about the cultural legacies of three very complicated women: Carry Nation, Hattie McDaniel, and Rosie the Riveter. Each made history — and they still exert influence today. Join us as we touch on Black American migration, Ryan Murphy's Hollywood, the 1991 film Daughters of the Dust, and (of course) Gone with the Wind. She may have died almost seventy years ago, but Hattie McDaniel has had a lot going on lately. Of course, she was an icon, and icons enjoy an eventful afterlife right here on earth. For full Show Notes, click on Transcript and scroll to bottom.

In June of 1900 Carry Nation, 54 years old, a preachers wife and devout Christian, arrived in the unassuming town of Kiowa, Kansas.  Filling her hands with rocks and bricks she marched into several drinking establishments and began smashing the bottles behind the bars. After years of dedication to the Temperance Movement, Carry felt that god had called upon her to take this next, drastic step in the battle against the sinful destructions of alcohol. She had been raised in a strict and patriarchal household.  She had spent most of her life trying to be the quiet and submissive woman society expected her to be. But having survived heartbreak, loss, financial ruin, and years on the edge of civilization she would come to represent the strong woman-hood of a new era. Armed with her faith, determination (and eventually a hatchet), Carry Nation would march into the last bastion of male exclusivity: the saloon, and smash with righteous glee.

This week we sit down with Dan O'Mahony. Dan is a musician, writer, and political activist from Orange County, California. He is currently the singer for Shiners Club, and the Host of Dan O Says so, a video interview show featuring guests from the punk community. (which Kevin highly recommends) Link:   https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxpct260T9e11WnmGtBlIA In the 1980s, O'Mahony was the lead singer for hardcore straight edge band No For An Answer (NFAA). The band is credited with being one of the cornerstones of the straight edge movement on the west coast and was the first west coast release by the prominent independent label Revelation Records. Dan has been the lead singer and primary lyricist of bands such as Carry Nation, Voicebox, Speak 714, John Henry Holiday, God Forgot, 411, and Done Dying. Dan has been credited as the lead singer on 16 records not counting assorted compilations and numerous live releases. Currently Dan sings for Shiners Club from Orange County.  Early in his career O'Mahony was known for the heavily activist nature of his lyrics espousing the rejection of homophobia, domestic abuse, the First Gulf War, and many self-destructive behaviors. Dan's writing in recent years has turned much more personal and reflects his life experiences. O'Mahony is the author of two autobiographical books, Three Legged Race and Four Letter World. He worked as a columnist for the seminal punk rock monthly publication Maximum Rocknroll from the mid-1980s until the early 1990s. In 2010 he began accepting assignments as a freelance journalist and writing for various political blogs.  He has been interviewed dozens of times, and his bands, activism and writing still influence many in the punk scene and beyond. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adultingwell/support
