Paula Koski specializes in the space between mental and fast-paced, groovy techno. The Finnish-born, Berlin-based DJ is in her element when performing energetic peak-time or closing sets, such as at Tresor, where she is a regular. Paula is inspired by the queer techno scene, where she finds expressive freedom as a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Integrally connected to her audience, she brings her sets to life through the experiences of like-minded people—on dance floors and across cities that most need her representation. Paula's talent for telling stories through her sets stems from her background as a fashion journalist, during which she began her career as a DJ. It wasn't long until her potential was recognized, and she moved to Berlin to pursue her musical aspirations. For several years, Paula continued her work as a writer for the techno monolith Monument where she was also the head of premieres and resident. Now focusing on her own music, she works closely with On Board management who has seen her profile grow rapidly. With appearances at Berghain, RSO, Hall Tallinn, as well as other key clubs in Europe and beyond, watch for Paula as she unites dance floors alongside the likes of DVS1, Aurora Halal, Stef Mendesidis, and more. What a serious pleasure it is to welcome Aurora Halal and DJ G! Without doubt two of the classiest operators in the NYC dance scene, Aurora and Gareth are some of the people behind parties like Mutual Dreaming, Sustain-Release and Nowadays, and are two of our favourite DJs in the biz. Joining us for their first mix together since the height of the 2020 lockdowns, where their combined palates seemed to gel effortlessly across the downtempo and d'n'b spectrum for the wonderful Juanita's series, their follow up offering remains cosmic at its core, but with dance floors back in full swing we're hit with a high octane amalgamation of souped-up alien techno, mysterious atmospheres and wonky futuristic breaks, ever progressing with blends of the surgical variety. Strap yourself in, this one's a mind trip! Click here for our chat with Aurora and G: melbournedeepcast.net/portfolio/aurora-halal-&-dj-g/ @itsallhalal @dj-ggggg

We’ve been really enjoying getting to know Sharlese over the last few months. We first met her playing in San Francisco with Aurora Halal and have been obsessed ever since. Hailing from Seattle, Sharlese is a co-founder of FALSE PROPHET, a crew focused on post punk, coldwave, industrial, dark wave and minimal. She’s also a resident for the techno crew DEPTH while holding down a day job at the well-respected KEXP. Sharlese is a perfectionist and this mix shows off her impeccable song selection and technical skill. As she put it: “This one goes hard!” Enjoy! https://soundcloud.com/sharlese
Alright alright, here we are with another installment of Live and Direct after a few months off. Our first recording for 2020 comes from a memorable night last November when our resident Aurora Halal invited Pessimist in to share the booth. Aurora provided the opening (and closing) moments, which is a side of the beloved techno we are really enjoying getting to know. Known for her meticulously programmed sets that build with both patience and intensity, this opening stays true to her hypnotic style. Taking us from cinematic dub techno to pitched up club favorites and back again, it's a subterranean and psychedelic ride leading us to the surface just before Pessimist's dnb stylings took over for the night. Aurora is back in our booth on March 28 alongside Wata Igarashi, DJ Python, Juliana Huxtable and more for Nowadays Nonstop. Tickets for that are available on Resident Advisor now.
With tracks from Enya, Middle Sky Boom, Etnik Sentetik, Mynationshit, Photonz, Aurora Halal, Midnight Magic, Blind Vision, Tragic Error, Fantastic Man, Bella Boo, Mr BC, Extrawelt and Axel Boman. Follow Daniel Kelsan here: https://soundcloud.com/danielkelsan
This may be the final measles update for this season: The city Health Department declared the Brooklyn outbreak over as of September 3rd. During the outbreak, 33,805 doses of the MMR vaccine were administered to people younger than 19 years old in Williamsburg and Boro Park, and the 2018 to 2019 outbreak involved 654 confirmed cases. Numerous others who were unvaccinated received vaccinations from other health professionals. Although the increased vaccination rates will help prevent transmission if the disease appears again, it's important to make sure newborn children receive their vaccinations on schedule, which involves two separate doses of the vaccine. Nearly all the infections during the outbreak were in children under 18 years old. For more information on city resources, call 311 or visit the Department of Health at nyc.gov/doh. As a result of the New York outbreak, the World Health Organization may now rescind the measles elimination status of the United States, which has been in place since the year 2000. It's been one year since Emirates flight 203 from Dubai landed at JFK after passengers reported feeling sick. On-board the plane, people were posting to social media, describing a group who seemed to all know each other, and all of who had been sick during the flight, but gotten much worse as the plane approached New York. Ten people were hospitalized and tested positive for the flu. Although the United Arab Emirates, where the flight originated, currently has CDC travel notices for diseases like MERS, which have similar symptoms to the flu, it seems like last year's flight that caused an endless string of Twitter jokes about horror movies was instead just a routine case of the flu, which is also a great reminder to get your flu shot this season, which can eliminate your chance of getting the flu this winter or lessen its impact if you're exposed to it. You can find flu shots at local pharmacies, private hospitals, and city health clinics. Visit nyc.gov/flu for more info. 29 years ago on September 2, 1990 — Brian Watkins is stabbed and killed after confronting a group of teens trying to rob his family 114 years ago on September 11, 1905 — The Ninth Avenue Elevated derails and falls off its track, killing 13 and injuring 48 Just before making a second political appearance on the Fox channel, Bill de Blasio declared this week that he will likely maybe consider thinking about suspending his presidential run if he does not meet the polling and fundraising requirements for the next month's debate, after already not qualifying for the upcoming September debate. The requirements are the same for October as they were for the September debate: Candidates need to achieve 2% in four polls or have 130,000 unique donors. While de Blasio is still polling between 0% and 1%, some more-recognizable fellow candidates throw in the towel, including New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Facing a multitude of problems at home, from NYPD officer suicides, the long-delayed firing of officer Pantaleo, and ever-increasing traffic fatalities, de Blasio took some time to visit the city this week and propose requiring Citi Bike riders to wear helmets and that all bicycles should be licensed, two measures that have previously been proposed, will never be implemented, and have shown to result in less cycling. In a reference to the Iowa state fair where de Blasio had been campaigning, comedians Jason Selvig and Davram Stiefler took the opportunity last week to lay out some corn dogs and ears of fresh corn on a bed of hay outside City Hall, in an effort to lure the Mayor back home. Also 4 years ago, a string of incidents in the subway showed the danger that subway conductors face while trying to keep the city moving. That week started out with five separate assaults on MTA employees, occurring at all hours throughout the day, including three attacks within the span of two hours. By 2018, after an increase in incidents targeting their workers, the MTA proposed a voluntary program for MTA workers to wear body cameras, but it's hard to tell what the status of the program is today. As recently as this year, the transit workers' union has called for greater police enforcement in the subway due incidents where MTA workers were spit upon. In celebration of International Women's Day (March 8), Wild City has been posting mixes compiled by female artists for this entire month. As March nears its end, we have the final mix of the month – this one comes from Mumbai-based DJ Manaalina aka Manaal Oomerbhoy. Though the last of the series, Manaalina's mix may be the most impactful one yet, and one that truly celebrates women in electronic music. Just one look at the tracklist and you'll see why – the mix features tracks solely produced by female artists. If that isn't a true display of rebellion against patriarchal tropes and gender stereotypes about women in electronic music, then we don't know what is. Manaalina's set is an empowering catalogue of some of electronic music's most powerful and experimental female producers. Ranging from radical artists like Deena Abdelwahed, Kaltes & Nene H, and Aisha Devi to Upsammy, Mor Elian, Aurora Halal, Powder and more, the mix includes tracks from artists all over the map, from Europe to America to Asia and beyond. Manaalina claims to experience dance as a “powerful exorciser” and is a strong believer in the transcendental and healing abilities of sound, and it shows in her set, which comprises primarily of experimental, left-field electronic. The mix lays on the heavier side of the sonic spectrum, spanning industrial, abstract electro, techno and house, awash with vocal samples and breaks. All-consuming and bass-heavy, the mix displays her open-minded approach to experimentation and her deep love for the dance-floor, apparent in the hypnotic, trance-like barrage of sounds. “A frenzied mix for fractured minds, envisioned as a soundtrack for witching hour.” - Manaalina Head here for tracklist & further info: http://www.thewildcity.com/mixes/12183-wild-city-169-manaalina
New Music Worldwide is a weekly mix series hosted by Thris Tian. This week’s New Music Worldwide comes from Relaxer. Emerging from New York in 2016, Relaxer is the latest project from Daniel Martin-McCormick. Influenced by two decades of innovative US underground, McCormick uses contagious bassline grooves and psychologically charged atmospheres to form his unique sound. With over five EPs released via the Relaxer alias and his hardware live set being performed at places such as Berghain, De School and many more, McCormick also runs the label Lovers Rock Recordings. He also has a collaborative project with Aurora Halal as Halal & Relaxer and co-directs the NYC based Sustain-Release festival. For his NMW mix, Relaxer explores the ideas and influences from his latest tape “A Family Disease”, with a pick of hazy ambient and techno selections, all combined to form a lagoon of solace.
Since 2015, Bloodymery is Florence's "Tropical Animals" resident DJ and co-founder of Sainte-Cécile Techno Party. Massimiliano Pagliara, Mattia Trani, Aurora Halal, Fango, Vladimir Ivkovic, ADIEL, Dj Red, Borrowed Identity, Aquarius Heaven and Avalon Emerson are just a small part of the artists with whom he has been working recently. Always taking on a tireless musical research on Techno, Ambient, Drone and Downtempo records, he has now become a point person in his city, Florence. She throws parties in New York, co-founded a festival, makes records, djs and plays live. Aurora Halal is certainly a multi talent and we hope you enjoy her live jam recorded at Sustain Release Festival. Check out a short interview with her here: http://www.iliantape.de/ilian-tape-podcast-series-023/
The music Aurora Halal creates is informed by many different disciplines. She is a producer, but also a videographer and visual artist who has worked on films about modular synth godfather Morton Subotnick amongst others. She is also the force behind Brooklyn’s Mutual Dreaming party series as well as the Sustain-Release festival. In just a couple of years she has cooked up an expressive and experimental techno sound—solo and with the likes of Ital—on labels such as Lovers Rock and her own Mutal Dreaming Recordings. Oppressive and foggy, her distorted, imperfect sounds made up of heavy drums and scurrying synths have taken her to plenty of remarkable live gigs all over the world. Now she steps up to our mix series with equal aplomb.
