Anna's co-hosts over at The Barren's Hideout podcast, Big D and Little D, joined us tonight in an assault on Charlie's person for his contemptuous opinion on Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. As always, even though Charlie didn't care for the film, he gave it a fair review and his points were spot on, unlike his revulsion for Cutie Honey and Thirst, of which his opinions are wrong and he should be ashamed about himself. Leslie Vernon is a big thumbs up from everyone who's name isn't Charlie.

Honey Flash! Sully and returning guest Salvatore (@RetroSofa) sit down with VA and dub director David Wald and OG Cutie Honey dub actress Jessica Calvello to discuss their work on the recent English dub for the 2004 OVA Re: Cutie Honey from Discotek! Topics include how Go Nagai chose Jessica for the role of Honey, how dubbing has changed since Jessica first took the role in the 90s for New Cutie Honey, and what makes Honey so special all these years later. An important note: This was recorded a few months ago, prior to David's statement on Crunchyroll opening his fan mail without his knowledge and dispersing the contents to their staff. Upon David's request, we didn't go back and add any additional mention of this in the episode, but we did want to state here in text that we are deeply disappointed in Crunchyroll's behavior and we encourage anyone listening or reading this to support David and call upon Crunchyroll to do better. Time stamps: 00:00:00 - Intro and Jessica's long history with the character 00:12:59 - Bringing back returning cast members from previous Cutie Honey and Go Nagai anime projects 00:15:49 - David's thoughts on directing dubs for "archival anime" as opposed to newly airing anime 00:18:04 - Salvatore on being a Cutie Honey super-fan, archivist, and working with Discotek Media 00:27:07 - Jessica and David on the nuances and differences across the various Cutie Honey series' 00:40:21 - How does Jessica approach the work of acting within the limitations of anime 00:46:04 - Jessica and David on dub script adaptation and directing 00:53:26 - A brief aside about Excel Saga and Jessica's "Excel Saga Journal" 01:03:49 - Knowing that Cutie Honey is a very fanservice heavy show, how do you approach that with pathos? 01:15:45 - David's approach to the lesbian text of Cutie Honey 01:27:39 - Casting Kayleigh McKee as Black Claw 01:34:46 - What's Cutie Honey's appeal for Salvatore? 01:50:49 - Salvatore asks about the mythical Cutie Honey CGI project that never materialized 02:01:24 - Jessica has a crucial question for Salvatore: Is Cutie Honey an android or a magical girl? 02:07:36 - Would Jessica and David return to dub Cutie Honey Flash if given the chance? 02:10:27 - Outro If you enjoy this or any other episode, leave us a Rating and Review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or elsewhere! Cutie Honey is undoubtedly one of THE most influential and controversial pieces of work since it's publishing over 50 years ago. While it pushed the Magical Girl Genre and it's themes beyond what was thought Magical Girls were thought to be, especially being a Shonen, it did force people to reckon with the question of where is the line when it comes to entertainment aimed at children when it comes to certain themes. Coming of age stories like Horimiya, heck even Naruto are great and should be celebrated for what they are, but when the but when the content/ "substance" of a show is 99.999999% fan service hmmmmmm questions have to be raised. Nagai is a pioneer in the manga industry and has written and illustrated many works. While he knew his works whether that be in Sci-fi, Horror, Magical Girl or historical would push boundaries on censorship, it is also interesting to know that his "portrayals" of certain characters were so OUT there that an entirely new genre was created that centered on $*x jokes within the Shonen category. While Adults write Young adult novels and manga all of the time, and handle coming of age stories of love, self-discovery, deep feelings, heartbreak and so much more, sometimes we do have to sit back and wonder....who is the actual target audience, where is the inspiration for these works coming from, and where do ethics, morality and art intersect? ✨Follow me on Social Media✨ ✨Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/miladyconfetti/ ✨TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@miladyconfetti ✨Twitch https://www.twitch.tv/miladyconfetti ✨Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/miladyconfetti ✨Sources of This Episode✨ Provided on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/miladyconfetti ✨Music✨ Cherry Bomb by MiladyConfetti 2024

Pete. That bastard. He did it again. After picking the marvelous 7th Curse as his first "Month of Pete" movie he goes and picks a movie so utterly awful that Nate and Charlie want to replace his ass as a host as soon as possible. The application process is pending so be on the look out. Pete...ugh...damn you Pete...picked another live action anime film that puts Cutie Honey to shame. I hate you Pete. This week we were subjected to the indescribable and unforgivable dumpster fire called HK: The Forbidden Superhero. Pete is once again on probation and prohibited from selecting movies for the foreseeable future once February is over. The funniest thing is that Pete thought that by asking Troy back on the show that he would help his incorrect decision making us watch this movie. While Troy was lukewarm at best, Pete did find a ringer that legitimately helped out the cause. He had to literally go half way around the world to bring on Reuben from Good Beer Bad Movie Night: Australia. That's right, Australia. We have listeners in Australia. Amazing. While Reuben was a genuine delight to have on, he, like Pete, is dead wrong about this movie. If the next two Pete Picks aren't a vast improvement from HK: The Forgotten Superhero he's gonna get replaced. Probably by Reuben. Probably.

Nate found a way to get back at Pete for the Cutie Honey incident of 2023. (We try our best to not bring up such harsh memories) Cube at first does not seem like a likely choice for us to cover, but you'll be surpised at the history this movie has with each host and special guest Troy of Good Beer Bad Movie Night. Pete thought bringing in back up would help, and he was sadly mistaken!
Join the Anim-A-Holes as we discuss Go Nagai's first female protagonist, Cutie Honey! (1974)
From the director Neon Genesis Evangelion and Shin Godzilla, Hideaki Anno brings a classic anime to life with Cutie Honey. The argument during the show was if this is an action movie or not. Charlie makes a good argument that this is comedy adventure rather than action, but the kill count is just as high Missing in Action, if not more. With guns, sword fights and giant explosions how can this NOT be an action movie regardless of its absurdity. I had to pull in my Good Beer Bad Movie Night co-host Troy to help make my argument, but opinions couldn't be more different and the episode benefits from the dissonance. No matter what side of the fence you're on, this is a banger of an episode.

Time Codes: 00:00:28 - Introduction 00:02:35 - September in October 00:04:17 - Vérité #1 00:49:17 - Cutie Honey: The Classic Collection 01:23:32 - Wrap up 01:24:34 - Contact us Shea and Derek are back for their September manga episode. (Yeah, yeah. We know it's the beginning of October, but the guys were a little late getting last month's show recorded.) This time they discuss two intriguing titles, each quite different one from the other. They begin with the inaugural issue of Vérité, a new anthology series out of India featuring classic alternative manga as well as contributions from contemporary Indian artists that have a gekiga feel to them. The guys were glad to see work from Tadao Tsuge, Susumu Katsumata, and Youji Tsuneyama, but they were also taken by fresh Indian voices such as those of Anpu Varkey, Shaunak Samvatsar, Nandita Basu, and Bharath Murthy, Vérité's editor. After that, Shea and Derek discuss Cutie Honey: The Classic Collection, by Go Nagai. This is another one of Seven Seas Entertainment's nice hardbound collections of classic 1970s manga, other titles including Captain Harlockand Devilman. The guys emphasize Cutie Honeyas a representative kind of shonen manga for its time, but they spend most of the time discussing the, at times discomforting, sexual or erotic nature of Go Nagai's creation. What was written for a particular audience back in the 1970s may come across as gratuitous or even offensive to more contemporary readers. But both Derek and Shea point out that, despite the erotic weirdness apparent at times, the story is engaging and worth revisiting.
Much like one would get turned on to a religious figure, Naz introduces Interdimensional Alex to the glory of Cutie Honey, the live action 2004 film directed by Hideaki Anno, based on the manga and anime character created by Go Nogai. The podcast was recorded in two parts, one part before Alex had any exposure to the beautiful and amazing film known as Cutie Honey. The second part was recorded after he had experienced it's awesome power. Will the film have changed Alex down to a molecular level, hopefully for the positive? Tune in to find out! Honey Flash! It’s dub vs sub this week on CWTA, and what a way to get there. Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: a girl’s dead father created super advanced technology that allows the daughter to change her appearance and save the day when bad guys show up. Throw in The Misfits and you’d have a cartoon from the 80s! Our intro song this week is ‘Girls on Film (Night Version)’ by Duran Duran. The movie song is the opening theme from the Re:Cutie Honey OVA which was also showcased in the film, performed by Kumi Koda. The outro song is ‘Bizarre Dub Triangle’ by New Order.

Petals and Penguins: The Work of Kunihiko Ikuhara (9/28/13 5:00 PM-6:00 PM | CGC – 106): The creator and director of Revolutionary Girl Utena, Kunihiko Ikuhara is a man who loves imagery. And metaphor. And messing with your mind. His works make you think, make you feel, and usually not in the ways you’re probably meant to when you started your day. But yet, we always keep coming back for more. From his start in the anime adaption of Sailor Moon, to Penguindrum and beyond, we look into the twisted body of work that has defined Kunihiko Ikuhara. Getting Your Anime Groove Back (9/29/13 11:00 AM-12:00 PM | CGC – 104): Anime burn out happens all the time. Sometimes life gets in the way and people lose interest in keeping up with the latest shows and news. This panel looks at a few shows that may rekindle that anime fan deep inside that just wants to be free again. The Weird Side of Go Nagai (9/29/13 2:30 PM-3:30 PM | CGC – 106): While Go Nagai is easily one of the most prolific and influential anime and manga creators of our time, not everyone knows his stranger side. Sure, some anime fans may know the popular stuff like Cutie Honey or Mazinger Z, but what about Aztechkaiser; a tokusatsu pro-wrestling live action show where the hero beats his enemies by turning into animation? Now that’s weird! Boy that sure was a whole lot of cues!
It's Communitoid Episode 012 - The Legend of the Scion of the House of Kerfluffer! This week Jo shockingly plays a game that isn't Mass Effect (don't worry, she's also playing through Mass Effect again), Aaron learns not to drink an entire fishbowl margarita before the show, and guest host JohnnyViral explains how he became known as the angriest man in gaming and reveals his current obsession with cream soda. We also discuss setting Necros on fire, the Star Wars and the Star Treks, we name an indie game that someone should make for us, and decide that dating sims are awesome when they're made by insane people. Plus usedtabe hosts the first edition of our new Tales of Werewolf feature with a rundown of the "Evil Dead" game! Keep listening after the closing song for our reactions to Cutie Honey's cblog and ramblings about Transformers. Hope you enjoy!
