Shinichiro Watanabe is a legend amongst anime fans and an auteur who pushes the boundaries of what the anime medium has to offer. Titles such as Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Space Dandy are Adult Swim staples that have defined a generation. Now he's back with an upcoming action series debuting on Cartoon Network midnight 05 April 2025 called Lazarus. A story about a world wracked in chaos due to a “cure-all” opioid becoming lethal and the reluctant rag-tag group of criminals tasked to find the neuroscientist responsible in the hopes of creating a vaccine. It is a race against time on a global stage.Your backdoor anime hangout had the privilege and honor to interview Watanabe-san for his latest title: his inspiration for the title, musical collaborations, and involvement with the John Wick director, Chad Stahelski. Many Thanks To:Interpreter: Takayuki Karahashi of Green Room InternationalInterview Coordination: Jo Ann Faustino of Green Room International Raymond Shipman of Anime Los AngelesOtaku Hourly Crew:Interviewer: Jonathan BeltranVideo: Jonathan Charles GarciaAudio: Matthew AquinoEditor: Christian WisemanResearch: Clifford Sutton“TM & © 2025 Cartoon Network. Do you have a big ego? Do you know someone who has? This Quackcast is about utilising egos for comic characters for comedic purposes, to humanise character, or to make villains more unlikeable and or funny. Big egos are a sign of poor self esteem, people inflate their egos to cope with feelings of inadequacy and inferiority. For examples of that we have a certain prominent politician and also a tech billionaire as perfect representations of every facet of that concept. :) Personally I LOVE a protagonist with a big, inflated ego, especially if it's also illustrated that it's undeserved, and often shown punctured. It's pretty uncommon for protagonists to have big egos though unfortunately because people see that as weakness in their character and status rather than making them more interesting. Big egos are far more common in villains, mostly because it's seen as a negative trait, but also because it's an easy way to show how weak and pathetic they are, they're also a goldmine for easy laughs. The latter is the reason that the characters with the biggest egos in fiction are often not the main villain but the villain's lieutenant. My favourite protagonists with big egos are Tank Girl, George Costanza from Seinfeld, Duckman (played by the same actor as George. Jason Alexander), Flashman from the books by George MacDonald Fraser, Space Dandy, Basil Faulty from Faulty Towers, Hyacinth Bucket from Keeping up Appearances, and Meg from the series Drifters. I'd love to name more but it's not a common trait, though you can point out a million villains with massive egos. In the Quackcast I examine Conan the Barbarian as a story about ego: Conan acquires a massive ego as a reaction to being kidnapped as a child and living as a slave, then being trained as a gladiator and lauded with praise and women. That only increases when he gets his freedom, joins his friends and becomes a successful thief. He's then tasked with rescuing a princess from a cult and returning her to her father. His ego is so big he eschews the help of his friends and tries to do it alone. He's captured by the villain, Thulsa Doom, the same man who killed his mother and enslaved him. Thulsa lectures him on the strength of ego and manipulation before crucifying Conan on a tree. As he dies, Conan's ego dies with him. His friends find his body and take him back, reviving him without ego. In then end Conan defeats Thulsa Doom, Thulsa expects his ego to dominate Conan and save himself but Conan kills him the same way Thulsa killed his mother, and does it totally without ego. As a last gesture he burns down Thulsa's temple and his cult disbands: the last two symbols of Thulsa Doom's over inflated ego. Do you agree with my take on Conan the Barbarian? Do you like characters to have a big ego? If so, what are your fave examples? Many forms of media have been created and consumed in recent decades, and the Gents bring up the fact that there needs to be a return of aliens featured in anime and manga (17:30). This debate brings up a variety of shows from Tenchi Muyou! to Space Dandy, and even popular hits like Sailor Moon that featured species that are from out of this world! The Gents reminisce on where they saw these shows first on Toonami growing up, they bring their attention to the drama the hit channel Cartoon Network is facing (33:45). Warner Brothers' animated department is having a weird break-up with the infamous cartoon hub, and fans of all ages are gravely worried about what is to become of a simple escape where people gathered and watched cartoons. This week the class is going to the movies! I mean, our living rooms, but you get the idea! We cover the 1984 Japanese short story by author Seiko Tanabe, "Josee, the Tiger, and The Fish". This film was previously released back in 2020 and follows the story of Tsuneo, a college student who is working multiple jobs to achieve his dream of diving into other oceans in search of a certain fish, and Josee, a dreamer, who lives her life stuck in a wheelchair. This romantic comedy-drama film was animated by Studio Bones, who have animated other famous works such as "Mob Psycho, My Hero Academia, and Space Dandy". Tune in as we discuss our thoughts on this rom-com movie, and see if we thought it lives up to the hype of other similar Japanese animated movies that have been released in the past few years.

Primeiramente lançado no Toonami! The series is produced by MAPPA, directed by Yamamoto Sayo [_Michiko and Hatchin_, _The Woman Called Fujiko Mine_, some episodes of _Samurai Champloo_ and _Space Dandy_] and written by Kubo Mitsurou. > — [Fanlore - Yuri!!! on Ice](https://fanlore.org/wiki/Yuri!!!_on_Ice) **Search Data / Growth:** _Yuri on Ice_ had a huge spike in interest between [October 2016 and December 2016](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=2016-07-01%202018-07-31&q=%2Fg%2F11cmg5bxns) (which coincides with the release of, at the time, the only season of the anime). This week, we're teaming up to get a high score with Michael Kimball as we blast into the world of... Galaga?! What is it about the classic arcade game that has held its allure for more than thirty years? And where is the fandom heading? Next week, we move from space fighter to space _robots_ to talk about Gunpla with [the Otaku Journalist, Lauren Orsini](https://www.otakujournalist.com/)! ## Where can I learn more about Michael Kimball? You can learn more about Michael by [checking out his website](http://www.michael-kimball.com/) or perhaps even by reading his book, [_Galaga_](https://bossfightbooks.com/collections/books/products/galaga-by-michael-kimball) published by Boss Fight books! ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **History and Origins:** > Galaga is a Japanese arcade game developed and published by Namco Japan and by Midway in North America in 1981. It is the sequel to 1979's Galaxian. The gameplay of Galaga puts the player in control of a spacecraft which is situated at the bottom of the screen, with enemy aliens arriving in formation at the beginning of a stage, either trying to destroy, collide with, or capture the spaceship, with the player progressing every time alien forces are vanquished. > > — [Wikipedia - Galaga](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaga) The game has been re-released and sequeled multiple times, with at least twenty different games existing in its release history including tie-in versions for popular anime _Space Dandy_ and fighting game series _Tekken_. **Size of Fandom:** Estimating the number of fans is always difficult. Using a few data points that we have: - The [Galaga subreddit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaga) has about 140 subscribers - The [Arcade subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/cade/) has over 22 000 subscribers - The [Retrogaming subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/retrogaming/) has almost 63 000 subscribers - Two remixes on [OverClocked Remixes](http://ocremix.org/game/192/galaga-arc) - [300 000 people](http://www.chicagotribune.com/sns-bc-as--new-zealand-galaga-wars-20180504-story.html) tuned in to watch a livestream of a Galaga tournament Given such a wide range of values, the safest estimate probably puts the number of fans _in the thousands_. **Fast Facts:** - Archive Of Our Own and FanFiction.net have about 60 fanfics combined that reference Galaga, the majority of which involve "Galaga Guy" from the first Avengers movie; even DeviantArt returns a scant almost 3000 results - The 2007 ABC series, _Lost_, features a submarine named after the game > Variety reports **Galaga Chronicles is being developed by The Nuttery Entertainment, who reached an agreement with the original creators, Bandai Namco. The firm will be responsible for developing a story and characters for the Galaga series for the first time in its over 30 year history**. No official word yet on where the animated series is set to land if it's completed and greenlit, but it's being reported the series and other Galaga related projects the company is working on will be cut across various platforms. The project is still very early on in development, so no release date has been given as of yet. > > — [Cinemablend - Galaga Might Get A TV Show, And Yes, We Mean That Galaga](https://www.cinemablend.com/television/1683990/galaga-might-get-a-tv-show-and-yes-we-mean-that-galaga) ### [Last Episode's](http://fanthropological.com/e/#-name) Famous Last Words **Justus** Given the age of Galaga and the fact that there haven't been that many remakes over the years... why Galaga? What is it about that game that lends itself to the longevity of the fandom? [// Why are folks still a fan?]: # [// I am also curious about this]: # **T** How does the community stay together, given how small it is? [// I found an official forum, but it was almost dead?]: # **G** Is there an aspect to Galaga fandom that is non-competitive? **Z**
