Ah, Fall. For many, it is the time for crisp, cooler air, pumpkin spice lattes, and bundling up all warm and toasty while you watch the leaves change from the colors of green to the colors of autumn. But if you're us? It's all about families of assassins, yakuza, military complexes, bear cults, and devious pro wrestlers. Or perhaps intrigue, spy craft, and amorous rendezvous aplenty! Honey Flash! Sully and returning guest Salvatore (@RetroSofa) sit down with VA and dub director David Wald and OG Cutie Honey dub actress Jessica Calvello to discuss their work on the recent English dub for the 2004 OVA Re: Cutie Honey from Discotek! Topics include how Go Nagai chose Jessica for the role of Honey, how dubbing has changed since Jessica first took the role in the 90s for New Cutie Honey, and what makes Honey so special all these years later. An important note: This was recorded a few months ago, prior to David's statement on Crunchyroll opening his fan mail without his knowledge and dispersing the contents to their staff. Upon David's request, we didn't go back and add any additional mention of this in the episode, but we did want to state here in text that we are deeply disappointed in Crunchyroll's behavior and we encourage anyone listening or reading this to support David and call upon Crunchyroll to do better. Time stamps: 00:00:00 - Intro and Jessica's long history with the character 00:12:59 - Bringing back returning cast members from previous Cutie Honey and Go Nagai anime projects 00:15:49 - David's thoughts on directing dubs for "archival anime" as opposed to newly airing anime 00:18:04 - Salvatore on being a Cutie Honey super-fan, archivist, and working with Discotek Media 00:27:07 - Jessica and David on the nuances and differences across the various Cutie Honey series' 00:40:21 - How does Jessica approach the work of acting within the limitations of anime 00:46:04 - Jessica and David on dub script adaptation and directing 00:53:26 - A brief aside about Excel Saga and Jessica's "Excel Saga Journal" 01:03:49 - Knowing that Cutie Honey is a very fanservice heavy show, how do you approach that with pathos? 01:15:45 - David's approach to the lesbian text of Cutie Honey 01:27:39 - Casting Kayleigh McKee as Black Claw 01:34:46 - What's Cutie Honey's appeal for Salvatore? 01:50:49 - Salvatore asks about the mythical Cutie Honey CGI project that never materialized 02:01:24 - Jessica has a crucial question for Salvatore: Is Cutie Honey an android or a magical girl? 02:07:36 - Would Jessica and David return to dub Cutie Honey Flash if given the chance? 02:10:27 - Outro If you enjoy this or any other episode, leave us a Rating and Review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or elsewhere! From 1988 to 1989, the anime studio Gainax gave us a six episode OAV(OVA?) series known as Gunbuster. It had it all: Giant robots, space aliens, ladies from an all-girls school training in giant robots to fight the space aliens, the whole nine yards! Then in 2023, Discotek Media gave an outstanding Blu-ray release of that show complete with a brand new English dub handled by Sound Cadence Studios. And then in 2024, the OSMcast! gave the world a podcast about Discotek Media's Blu-ray release of the anime Gunbuster by Gainax. But also joining us to talk about Gunbuster is Melissa Sternenberg, the voice of Kazumi Amano from the Sound Cadence Studios English dub production for the Discotek Media Blu-ray release of the anime Gunbuster by Gainax. 'Lovely Complex' Localizer FIRED by Discotek?! Is This Anime Dub DOA?

Clownfish TV: Audio Edition

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 16, 2024 25:49

The dub for 'Lovely Complex' has come under fire due to one of its localizers, a YouTuber named JelloApocalypse, loudly and proudly saying the series sucked and he was working to "improve" the dub by "fixing" what he thought was political incorrectness. And apparently, Discotek has fired him for it. Then we talk about the infamous dub for 'Ghost Stories.' ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com ➡️ Audio Edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qJc5C6OkQkaZnGCeuVOD1 ➡️ Gaming News: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A7VIqE3r5MQkFgL9nifNc Additional Context: The anime landscape is no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to the dubbing and localization of beloved series for Western audiences. The latest whirlwind to hit the community centers around "Lovely Complex," a rom-com anime that has charmed viewers with its quirky take on the dynamics of love and friendship. However, the series' English dub adaptation has ignited a firestorm, thanks to the involvement and subsequent comments of a localizer known on YouTube as JelloApocalypse. JelloApocalypse, a content creator with a significant following, took to the digital soapbox to express his dissatisfaction with "Lovely Complex," going as far as to claim the series "sucked" and that he was on a mission to "improve" the dub by "fixing" elements he deemed politically incorrect. This bold, if not brazen, approach to localization—where subjective interpretation overshadows faithful adaptation—has sparked a heated debate within the anime community. Fans and critics alike are wrestling with questions about the boundaries of localization, the integrity of original content, and the responsibilities of those tasked with adapting cultural products for new audiences. Discotek Media, the company behind the English dub of "Lovely Complex," found itself in the eye of the storm, leading to the reported firing of JelloApocalypse. This move reflects the delicate balance companies must strike in maintaining the authenticity of source material while navigating the sensitivities of diverse audiences. It also underscores the potential consequences for localizers who prioritize personal agendas over professional integrity. The controversy surrounding "Lovely Complex" inevitably draws parallels to the infamous dub of "Ghost Stories." In the case of "Ghost Stories," the localizers were given carte blanche to alter the script as long as they kept the basic plot intact, resulting in a dub that was wildly different in tone and content, filled with ad-libbed humor, pop culture references, and politically incorrect jokes. While some hailed it as a comedic masterpiece and a cult classic, others criticized it for straying too far from the original. The situation with "Lovely Complex" raises important questions about the role of localization in the global spread of anime. It challenges the industry to find a balance between making content accessible and relatable to international audiences without sacrificing the essence that made these works resonate with their original viewers. As the dust settles on this particular controversy, the conversation it has sparked about cultural respect, artistic integrity, and the evolving nature of localization in the anime industry is likely to continue resonating for some time. From weird and interesting new anime announcements to changes in a few business sectors, upcoming dubs and upcoming sequel seasons, weird ventures into the real world, and the biggest thing of the last few weeks: the latest DISCOTEK DAY that had a little bit of something for everybody. And that also means this show will be VERY jam-packed, aka long. Again. It has been one month since our last main episode, and while some things are changing around here some things will remain the same - namely, the "season" gimmick and the non-sequitur titles and pictures. Those aren't ever going away. The month of July has come and gone, and as we look back on it we can say that it was a pretty strange and wild month across the board. But as the dog days of summer trek onward, so does this show, with plenty of big convention announcements and dub casts for the roll call of the season - and even some extra bits that show that Crunchyroll is just doing way, way, WAY too much for us to keep track of. Are you all ready for a super-deluxe-loaded fall season? We sure aren't, which is why we're all hoping for the summer season to be a bit easier for us so that we can lead into fall with a bit more ease - though that's not going to be easy with several big shows slated for premiere in October. And with the approach of summer comes convention season, with industry panels big and small and, in this case, a bit Discotek-y as well. Let's hope that Anime Expo won't leave us melting in the summer heat next month, too. Also, HUNTER X HUNTER IS COMING BACK... MAYBE... POSSIBLY... PRESUMABLY. And along with all of that discussion, there are more projects announced that have gotten our curiosity perked up, a good small morsel of sportsball integration, even more plans for trips to the movies, and yet another moment of Andrew breaking down into hilarious hysterics over a rather saucy title. Another year has come to a close, and with it so does this season of the show, a season that's seen as many highs and lows as the year itself has. But before we turn the calendar over to the new year, we have a few more strands of business to attend to, namely the fact that Discotek continues to be absolutely mad and we cherish them for it. Discotek Day happened again, as did… well, a certain show on Netflix for about three weeks, and we'll be talking about that as well. The first one to say “ouch” gets thrown in the airlock. Thanks for listening all throughout 2021, we'll be back in January for a new season and there may even be a surprise coming your way on Christmas Day… it might get hot, too, so get the firefighters ready. intro - not-so-live and in living color 8:48 - RIP Keiko Nobumoto 11:04 - Hikaru Kondo found guilty, given suspended 20-month prison sentence 13:29 - Demon Slayer drew some BIG ratings in Japan 18:25 - the 7th MHA popularity poll results 21:56 - The Misfit of Demon King Academy finds new Anos seiyuu 25:35 - Stone Ocean dub cast 38:57 - Sing a Bit of Harmony coming in January, dub cast and crew revealed 41:30 - Belle dub cast revealed 48:33 - Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse (Part One) coming in October 51:51 - Next Gridman Universe movie announced 53:33 - The Devil is a Part-Timer S2 set for summer 56:18 - Golden Kamuy S4 announced 59:38 - Yowamushi Pedal S5 announced for October 1:01:21 - Magia Record S3 delayed to spring 1:03:08 - Toonami December schedule updates 1:12:12 - discussion: what do we want from Toonami in 2022? 1:17:08 - Oban Star Racers Kickstarter campaign coming in February 1:20:44 - Ascendant Animation has two saucy acquisitions 1:24:31 - Child of Kamiari Month film coming to Netflix in February 1:25:36 - Bubble film coming to Netflix in April (with a BIG crew) 1:31:26 - Netflix live-action Cowboy Bebop cancelled after three weeks 1:48:32 - Megazone 23 retail Blu-ray coming in May 1:49:24 - Naruto Blu-ray set 6 coming in March 1:51:11 - Sentai March home video slate (Haikyuu! Welp. It certainly was a busy week, last week. Everything seemed to happen within the span of seven days, from Evangelion hitting Amazon, Stone Ocean confirmed to be for Netflix in December, the Crunchyroll sale being closed and finalized, Discotek at Otakon, a LOT went down in a very small amount of time. And we're here (and Sketch, too, he's back) to run down all of the insane developments in the industry, the drops that have left us scratching our heads, and the surprises that have us rather giddy in anticipation for what's to come. After four years, 100-plus episodes, some gags that have gone away, and plenty of hot-button discussions, we're still just getting started with this dog-and-pony show of ours. Welcome to season 9 of the mothership, where we have reconvened and walked into one heck of a confusing situation regarding Vinland Saga - there are TWO dubs for it. Weird, right? And that's just one discussion we have in store here, as we are also going to ask the most important question regarding Wonder Egg Priority and its polarizing finale (being WHAT THE F HAPPENED???), a look at two upcoming Toonami originals before their premieres, GKIDS acquiring another major holy grail license, and a brief chat about a certain Taco Bell commercial making the rounds. You know the one. Stay tuned for the next show, as well, as we'll be giving an overdue roast with a few more folks joining us, as well as taking our look at the summer anime season and all of the averageness that it will contain. Every now and then, we like to talk about video games, and there’s no better time to talk about video games than during the weekend-plus that was E3 2021, an event that we can definitely say did happen. And Nintendo was there to save the festivities from being a total bomb, as per usual. So please do enjoy the first half of this show, a good hour of video game talk and discussion and running down of upcoming projects and titles that will be released between the next few months to few years, if we’re all lucky. Hello, kaiju lovers! A chapter closes on today's episode as Nate concludes his “mini-sode” series on the Toho classics he missed out on in his previous podcast life. This week he discusses the almost-forgotten hard sci-fi tokusatsu film from 1984, Sayonara Jupiter (aka Bye Bye Jupiter). It was something of a transitional film for Toho since its cast and crew included players from both the Showa and Heisei eras, including Akihiko Hirata (in his final role), Sakyo Komatsu (author of Submersion of Japan), Koichi Kawakita (FX director for the Heisei Godzilla series), and Koji Hashimoto (director of Return of Godzilla/Godzilla 1985). Unfortunately, the Hollywood-caliber special effects can't save it from an overstuffed script that has a Jupiter Solarization Project, an eco-cult/terrorist group, and Nazca lines on Mars, among other things. If the film is known for anything, though, it's the (in)famous zero gravity sex scene (which may or may not be intrepid producer Jimmy From NASA's favorite part). Yep. After Nate gets into all of this, he reads some listener feedback in the form of three new Apple Podcasts reviews and then gets a visit from Monster Island's security chief, Captain Douglas Gordon, who brings along a famous friend he says is upset with Nate. This leads to an important announcement about MIFV's next episode series. After the credits, Nate and Jimmy are visited by Jessica, still fresh off of her exploits as magical girl superheroine Crystal Lady. She's been given some, shall we say, “special” earrings by the nefarious Monster Island Board of Directors. Let's just say Nate and Jess butt heads more than usual because of them. Guest stars: Sarah Marchand as Jessica Shaw Epilogue Parts 1-2 (“Introducing Godzilla Redux” and “Influencers”) written by Nathan Marchand. Additional music: “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo “in case…” by BiSH “Opening the Way” by Pablo Coma Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org, including one by InspectorJ, and the Toho Foley library. Here we thought all we were going to talk about was the happenings and announcements from AnimeJapan. Instead, everything else got announced, including stuff that happened after this show’s recording – yes, we’ll talk about THAT next time. So, with Andrew back from his “training arc” of sorts, we’re back to full strength to talk about a LOT of big stuff, not just AnimeJapan – we have the Viz and Crunchyroll home video deal that’s been a year and a half in the making, a set of new movies coming soon, a major series cancellation that may also lead to the untimely demise of one of our resident punching-bag studios in GoHands, some end-of-season wraps on some big shows that unfortunately stumbled in the end, Funimation getting a pretty big tennis anime and ALL of said tennis anime, and then there’s Jolyne Cujoh summoning the inevitable return of JoJo Fridays. Apologies for this show being about a week late, as we had some issues out of our control that prevented us from meeting up to do our show on schedule. Thanks a lot for everything, Kabletown, we hope you’re enjoying giving WWE those $200 million checks for the next five years. But gripes aside, we’ve got a good bit of stuff to talk about, even if the overall mood is a bit more… subdued, as it’s a three-man affair for this and the next show. We’ve got an interesting new project from MAPPA coming soon, some confirmed dates for some Netflix projects and some lament from the *weebs* (in bold/italics), a potential reason to double (or triple) dip on Your Name from the UK, the return of a long-time fan favorite series coming soon, and a Discotek Day panel stream that had a GIANT discovery that may very well alter the course of human history going forward. Here are some hard realities of life that we all need to accept: Tom Brady is an eldritch god living among the humans, Hunter x Hunter and Berserk both have the same billion-to-one odds of ever coming back full-time, and nothing that any other studio makes could match the avant-garde glory that is Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1995 anthology film MEMORIES. Try as they might, very little can even stand in its league, and we caught the Discotek Media global dub premiere of the film and had some high praise all around for it. Definitely more praise than a more recent film that may be the reason why Hayao Miyazaki will never stay retired – another hard truth for all of us to accept. And we also spend a rather sizable amount of time going over some fresh dub casts for some excellent shows of the winter season (and Hidden Dungeon, also), a small batch of Netflix projects to go over and also dissect one such project’s very questionable name and marketing, and even dive deep into why we can’t find the second Eureka Seven: Hi-Evolution film *anywhere.* Sadly, there is no Metallica in this program. 2020 just couldn’t end without one more major bombshell announcement, now, could it? After weeks and weeks of rumor-milling and speculation, it finally happened: the sale of Crunchyroll to Sony and Funimation, in an effort to start curbing off the massive debt building up within the big blue Death Star known as AT&T, will cause a seismic shift in the anime industry across the globe, but what will that exactly entail? Nobody really knows right now. It will be a long process from transaction to finalization, and all we can do it sit back and keep tabs of the transition, as it happens, as we head into the new year with – hopefully – a better year in sight. But it’s not all doom and gloom here, as we have some rather *interesting* Netflix shows coming down the pipeline, some big moves coming in for the new hotness that is Chainsaw Man, and a pretty meaty Discotek Day event to recap – complete with why a certain show’s lost English dub MUST be found and preserved. Alas, it keeps happening, hence why another episode is coming out so soon. Such a cause of an explosion? Several, actually – a GODZILLA anime, Log Horizon seemingly finding a new home over here, the first look at the latest installment in the Gridman universe, and the long-awaited return of… THE BEAST. You would think that we’d install some kind of fire-retardant materials of some kind to make sure our newsroom doesn’t explode when something big happens. 2020 sure has been all over the place, and nowhere is that more evident than with the shift to “virtual” anime conventions. Such was the case with VCRX, or the Virtual Crunchyroll Expo, an event that certainly did happen and that people watched from the comfort and safety of their own homes. There were some pretty significant announcements made throughout that weekend, as well, from the surprising to the REALLY surprising, and an old relationship seems to have been rekindled once again… while the other relationships are still tagging along for the time being. And in other news, prepare yourselves for the return of GOD – that being Haruhi Suzumiya – along with the continuing assimilation of Aniplex’s catalogue, a look at some upcoming shows for 2021, the latest transatlantic home video release happening, and one heck of a cliffhanger for next time, courtesy of the awesome folks at Discotek. Don’t worry, this won’t happen again for the spring (we hope), so do enjoy our long-belated thoughts on the offerings that winter has to offer, along with a rather lengthy discussion over a certain show that’s been the center of a LOT of polarizing controversies. #59 - Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro Review feat. Daryl Surat (Anime World Order, Otaku USA)

Since our previous Lupin the Third episodes (on The Mystery of Mamo and The Fuma Conspiracy) have done extremely well and everyone seems to like them, we decided we definitely needed to do another one before 2018 was over. So, we did! and we made it extra special by having on Daryl Surat! You may know Daryl from his long-running anime podcast, Anime World Order, or from his articles in Otaku USA and on Anime News Network. And if you've ever been scarred at convention panels by the names of "Anime's Craziest Deaths" or "Panel of DOOM", you can blame this guy.  (Anime World Order: www.animeworldorder.com) (Otaku USA: http://www.otakuusamagazine.com/) In this episode, we talk about the second Lupin the Third theatrical film, the legendary directorial debut of Hayao Miyazaki before he founded Studio Ghibli, Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro.  During catchup we introduce Daryl, ask him what's been going on with AWO, Otaku USA, and how the First of the North Star game is going. Bill talks Red Dead II, Tobias talks SSSS. Gridman, and Austin talks Dark Souls Remastered (a game franchise that Daryl's 60ish year old father is incredibly good at). We then talk about the movie, the Lupin franchise at large, it's tonal differences, the production staff of Cagliostro, Miyazaki's flair, "asbestos suits", Tobias' experience watching his FIRST LUPIN THING, and how amazing Discotek is.  Want to watch The Castle of Cagliostro for yourself? As of the release of this episode it is on Netflix and available on home video from Right Stuf and Discotek Media. (Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/title/70050576) (Right Stuf: https://www.rightstufanime.com/Lupin-the-3rd-The-Castle-of-Cagliostro-Blu-ray-Hyb-Collectors-Edition) We are happy to remind everyone that Bill has graciously provided a copy of The Rose of Versailles Part 1 as a FREE giveaway to one of you listeners out there! As we stated in the beginning of the episode, you can be entered to WIN by popping over to our iTunes account and leaving us a 5 star rating and review. (Link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/third-impact-anime-podcast/id1313595090?mt=2) We will be announcing the winner on DECEMBER 13th, 2018 (one month from today) in our Facebook community group so make sure to join over there to know if you're the winner!  (Link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/thirdimpactanimecommunity/) And that's it! We hope you enjoyed the show. Please feel free to follow us on social media, and if you could give us a star rating or review on either Facebook or iTunes, that really helps the show and we would really appreciate it.  Twitter: https://twitter.com/TI_Anime Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thirdimpactanime/ PodBean: https://thirdimpactanimepodcast.podbean.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnD4tDaOg7m3A0xatHfAc1g iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/third-impact-anime-podcast/id1313595090?mt=2 Google Play: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Il3e2lqbq2awcml5zuxa64lh7m4 PlayerFM: https://player.fm/series/third-impact-anime-podcast-2361453 Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/third-impact-anime-podcast

iTunes subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode! A short, ReView episode this time around! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it's my highly-clever (ok not really) title for episodes where I go back and watch an older title I haven't seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that time's gone by and I'm a little older. This time of an 80s Sanrio film I rented on VHS probably a million times as a kid, called The Sea Prince & The Fire Child. And since I was already sort of on the topic of well-loved VHS titles, I threw in a mini review of new VHS documentary Rewind This!
