Japanese mecha anime television series
POPULARITY
On January 16th, 2025, the world lost one of the greats; American filmmaker David Lynch passed away at the age of 78, leaving behind a decades-long career of truly unique films and television series' including Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Inland Empire, and many more. Many of us at Third Impact are big fans of Lynch's work, and Sully wanted to take some time to reflect on his life, his art, and his influence on various anime and Japanese video games over the years. Joining us are two returning friends, Drew and Emma of Sideburns and Cigarettes: A Lupin the Third Podcast who are also big Lynch fans. We dedicate this episode of David's life and his work. Remember; one day, the sadness will end. Time Stamps: 00:00:00 - Intro and everyone's history with David Lynch's work 00:10:53 - General chatting about David Lynch's works and their influence (whether explicitly or only speculatively) on many Japanese works including: Paranoia Agent The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Ghost in the Shell Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine Revolutionary Girl Utena Silent Hill Persona Soul Eater P.T. I alone can take humanity to its next natural state of evolution. Together alone, we're inducing a tilt-shift effect, defining PS2 ladder controls, going to the mall, curing women's diseases with herbs, softening the hardness of mother, running a doomed op, hallucinating wife and child wife, meeting Hamburger Hook, suffering the ultimate sense of peer rejection, getting anime crucified, going Gargoyle Mode, living with contradictions, embracing the arts, lusting after the great reset, failing to develop any hobbies, feeling left behind, and finding the greatest solace in slowly fading away. It makes my heart soar like an eagle to see your face again. Hear our voices again as we're debating pregnancy, switching Greenhill's music, loving a lady like a sister, locating some lost clay, reuniting the musical trio, recruiting another cave-dwelling misanthrope, reuniting the two best dandy fops ever made, saving Pesmerga for last, living by the way of a level 14 sword, containing truth inside of lies, marching the troops outta here, listening to Jowy's idiot plea to run away, cleansing the stain of defeat, telling girls what they look like, letting some of our guys get eaten by magic wolves, and seeking the Third Impact. For anyone who thought he was going to have a better run this movie, you're not totally wrong. There are some nice moments, and even some hopeful ones. All Shinji needed was a little love in his life, but instead got the death of both of his friends. But in the end who had the last laugh after he ascended to godhood. The Third Impact is beginning. The world is ending. Our Links:Ian Wolffe
LET'S TALK: Melanie and Melvin are joined by Kathryn, Melvin's wife, to discuss the much celebrated psychological-mecha anime Neon Genesis Evangelion and its sequel film Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion. The first half of the episode is a comprehensive non-spoiler discussion on what makes the show and film so enjoyable, provocative, challenging, and rewarding. The second half gets into more spoiler-specific discussions regarding the final two episodes of the show, the iconography of the film, interpretations of the ending, and most importantly: who is best girl? (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 1 hour of Melvin talking about the Director's Cut of the last three episodes of the show, and Melanie asking Melvin and Kathryn about other Neon Genesis Evangelion material such as what makes the manga different from the show, whether or not the “Rebuild” films from 2009 to 2021 are worthwhile, and a particular cross-over experience Melvin learned about while investigating extra material. Hey film buds,Quite the long title, isn't it? Well it fits because we have quite the episode for y'all. This week we continue to highlight the achievements of Women in Film by traveling across the Pacific to review and discuss Women in Anime. The popularity of Anime has grown significantly over the last decade or so, inspiring generations of fans from every background. Behind the camera, much like here in America, there is still somewhat of a limited range of women in above the line roles like Director and Producer. In this episode we're joined by Anime experts, Tori and Austin, from Third Impact Anime Podcast, to discuss two directors: Naoko Yamada and Mari Okada. Our first film is Naoko Yamada's A Silent Voice, based on a manga of the same name. The film tells the story of teenagers struggling with their feelings about themselves, each other, and the passage of time. It's an intimate, slice of life story that tries to condense a sprawling anime into a concise story. We talk about how well it works as an adaptation, the art style, and Yamada's work overall.Second, we're looking at Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms by Mari Okada. In a reversal from the grounded reality of A Silent Voice, Maquia tells a decades long story in a land of myth and magic, with a different Art Direction. We'll look at some of the similar themes in both stories, and whether original narratives or adaptations are more common in the Anime world.Beyond our reviews we also have a special announcement from Paul, What We're Watching, and more. You can find Austin on Twitter and Letterboxd, and you can also find Tori on Twitter and Letterboxd. If you haven't already, be sure to check out last week's episode as well as Madelaine Davis's "The Women on Screen, the Woman in the Mirror".Thanks y'all,The BudsEpisode GuideIntro - 00:00A History of Women in Anime - 04:08 A Silent Voice Clip - 15:43A Silent Voice Review - 16:18Maquia Clip - 50:21Maquia Review - 50:57Paul's Announcement, What We're Watching, and More - 01:26:24Total Runtime - 01:41:09Be a Friend to the Film Buds:thefilmbuds.comthefilmbudspodcast@gmail.compatreon.com/thebudsthefilmbuds.bandcamp.com@filmbuds on Twitter@thefilmbudspodcast on InstagramPaul's Letterboxd

**NOTE: During this episode I, Nick, made the mistake of saying that Misato and Kaji were alive during the Third Impact, I meant to say Second Impact. Please excuse my dreadful mistake and I hope it doesn't cause any confusion!!With the growing tensions surrounding our characters' world, the students seek some relief from the stress through a school trip to a luxurious set of tropical islands; but are their duties to NERV too important for such things? Can kids be kids or will our heroes have to take one for the team for the sake of the world? Find out on this week's episode of Full Impact! And don't forget to like, review, and subscribe! P.S. Enjoy all the PenPen screen you can!

The Evas are ready for battle on MONSTER ISLAND COMMENTARIES as Travis & Luana dive into Neon Genesis Evangelion with 1997’s THE END OF EVANGELION! They talk about the controversial ending of the TV series, the various messages creator Hideaki Anno might be conveying in the movie, if Al Pacino did the voiceovers for the English dubbing, what rap song should accompany the Third Impact, and more! Happy Labor Day! This is the holiday where we celebrate the good, hard-working folks over at NERV. Their tireless efforts to protect us from those dastardly Angels and their constant attempts at creating the Third Impact. And who is the hardest working person there? Well, it would be none other than the wonderful, talented, and won't hurt us at all ever, Asuka Langley Soryu! What we are getting at here is that this is an interview at Hamacon with renowned voice over artist Tiffany Grant, known best for her role as said Asuka Langley Soryu from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
So, kids. When two podcasts like each other very much, they have a crossover episode. And when the OSMcast! and Third Impact Anime both like the works of Masaaki Yuasa and studio Science Saru? They have an episode about the movie The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl, adapted from the novel by Tomihiko Morimi. Protip: This crazy experiment was recorded live at Hamacon 10. This is also the first time we have tried such a thing, so the audio is a little weird here and there. But still pretty listenable!
Third Impact has arrived on our podcast as OK KO: Let's Be Heroes' showrunners/animation experts Ian Jones-Quartey and Toby Jones return for our Evangelion episode! The promised time has come. Em and Jackson have watched Evangelion and they have talked about it into microphones for two whole hours. It's the episode that god himself tried to prevent. Third Impact is finally here.
This is a very special bonus episode that we put little to no effort into creating! At Animazement 2018, Tobias and I attended the "100 Years of Anime" panel hosted by Producer Masuo Ueda, animator Kazushige Yusa, director Akitaro Daichi, and curator of the Tokyo Anime Center, Asaba-san (I couldn't make out his full name). They discuss the most influential anime on their life and work, how anime has changed over the years, their struggles and successes as creators, how anime works in the west, and then took some audience questions at the end. It was incredibly fascinating and the whole panel was just hilarious. Sorry for the audio quality being garbage, this was recorded on my phone afterall. So sorry about that! Here's the video Ueda showed before the panel. It's amazing and beautiful and just WOWIE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4t-GV4XcJak As always, keep up with us over at Third Impact by following us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/TI_Anime and PLEASE give us a and star review over on our Facebook page, we'd really appreciate that. www.facebook.com/thirdimpactanime You can follow me (Austin) on Twitter at www.twitter.com/bebopshock Check out the Tokyo Anime Center here https://animecenter.jp/
Austin got the chance to sit down with Animazement 2018 guest of honor and Director of International Recruitment at the University of Akron, JP Yates! Mr. Yates is an educator, anime fan, cool dude, and professional Japan enthusiast. Austin picked his brain about his work in international education, living and working in Japan, panels, language, embarassing inter-cultural escapades, working for Epcot, celebrating Shinichiro Watanabe's birthday, hanging out with Masuo Ueda, and much, much more! Here's JP Yates' full bio from the Animazement website: "JP Yates has nearly 20 years of experience in international education, with a special focus on Asia. His positions have ranged from coordinator at Epcot, to eikaiwa teacher in Japan, to head of admissions forjTemple University, Japan Campus. When not travelling the world in search of students as Executive Director of International Recruitment for The University of Akron, he leads workshops in Japan on studying in the United States and vice versa. Yates is a graduate of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, and is the father of two dual Japanese/U.S. citizens. He enjoys frequent trips back to Japan for both work and pleasure, and feels strongly that Japan is the best option for both studying internationally and as the safest place to be an idiot (which he has proven on many, many occasions)." Thanks so much to JP Yates for coming on the show and thank YOU listeners for listening. Keep up with Mr. Yates on twitter @J_PYates Follow Austin @bebopshock and Third Impact proper @TI_Anime Enjoy the show! Please drop us a rating and a review, we'd really appreciate it.
Third Impact did a good. We went to a con. Unfortunately, the podcast recording did a bad. We didn't lose much other than Tobias' intro (but you guys know him already) and Austin's breakdown of the convention which you can find here, now! Ichibancon is an anime convention in Concord, North Carolina. 2018 is it's 9th year running and it's the second largest anime convention in the state right under Raleigh's Animazement. It features the usual convention content like cosplay, panels, and dealers but also had a fantastic game room and some stand-out guests. The major guests this year were Dante Basco (Hook, Avatar: The Last Airbender), Cassandra Lee Morris (K-On!, Sword Art Online, Madoka Magica), and Vic Mignogna (Fullmetal Alchemist, Star Trek Continues). [We also lost a little bit in the middle so if it rapidly cuts, that's why. Our bad] BUT! More important than all that is what we did, which is what we spend this episode breaking down. We discuss: Dealers, artists, panels, cool cosplays, some lunatic pulling the fire alarm, Godzilla and her inflatable children, butt touching among friends, bootleg video game dealers, other cool panelists, Daicon IV, Ryan wanting to fight Charles Dunbar, Porgs, Pop Team Epic, Edwin, impromptu panels, Jon actually buying something, Chinese food, Bill phoning in kinda, Devilman, and twitter questions!
