A Podcast for Entertainment about Entertainment! Hosted by Ben Jones and Phil Grothaus, this show will do just about everything except for validating your opinions about all things culture and entertainment. Tune in every week to dig in deep to the landscape of movies, TV, streaming, and anything else the guys decide to go on for way too long about. You’ll get anything but traditional reviews here, though. Whether through rankings, countdowns, debates or even a draft of Star Wars characters for a theoretical basketball game (yes, really), you’ll never be bored. Probably...
This week, the guys talk about BS High, an HBO documentary about the bizarre Bishop Sycamore football scandal that feels more like a serial killer interview. Plus, Phil has started One Piece. Find out how close he is to seeing all thousand-plus episodes of the anime series. This week, we're talking Disney princesses. More specifically, which Disney princesses we'd want in a team competition. The mystery is, we have no idea what that competition is. We're just drafting who we would want into teams of 4, then competing against each other in an AI-selected contest! So we're breaking down every possible strength, weakness, ability, character flaw and more. Along the way, there's a lot to talk about with the 8 original princesses. Which ones are our favorites, and which movies are the most classic? And do they hold up today? 5:00-Picking our princesses 27:30-The competition 33:15-Writer's strike ended! It's time for the definitive countdown of the Japanese anime Studio Ghibli movies. And who better to review and rank all 22 of them than someone who just watched them all for the first time, all in a row?! That's right, Ben is tackling this epic task. With 4 decades of tradition and countless childhood memories of generations attached for so many fans, it seems this is the only fair way to analyze them. How disappointed will Phil be at his picks? Which films are more accessible to a first-time viewer, and which ones will tumble down the list? Remember us?!?! After a long layoff due to the Hollywood strike, Phil and Ben are back with a long-awaited episode of WAYWA. And there is so much to talk about. The guys catch up on a few things they've been watching, compare the expansive universes of Star Wars vs. Star Trek and discuss the all-important Barbie movie. Oh, and there are some Would-You-Rathers involved. Guest alert! This week we're joined by bookstagrammer Clarice Reads Stuff for a super interesting conversation on books screen adaptations and everything in between. Clarice talks about everything, from what makes a book adaptation a strong movie or show to the successes and failures of classic novels remade for the screen. We also learn about plenty of more recent movies and shows that we had no idea we're based on books (The 100? Yes! Man on a Ledge? Sadly, no). Finally, the show wouldn't be complete without a roundtable of WAYWA. Beware of princess classics and giant monster blobs. Find Clarice on Instagram @clarice.reads.stuff. Be sure to follow the podcast on Instagram @waywa_podcast for all the latest show news, episode drops and more! 1:30–News 9:15–Books + Movies conversation 40:30–WAYWA (The Death of Stalin, Tangled, Casablanca, The Blob)
This week's discussion centers on Nausicaa of The Valley of the Wind, a 1984 Studio Ghibli creation about a post-apocalyptic earth where giant spore monsters battle against humans who use medieval swords and World War II airplanes. It's epic, unique and serves as inspiration for so much of what we have in film today. Hear why it's one of Phil's classics and, for Ben, the best movie he's seen since…(?) Other WAYWA topics include an aged Harrison Ford actually trying hard in Shrinking, and an aged Dennis Quaid not trying hard in GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Be sure to follow the podcast on Instagram @waywa_podcast for all the latest show news, episode drops and more! 1:00–News 6:15–Nausicaa of The Valley of the Wind 15:45–Rest of WAYWA (That 90s Show, Shrinking, The Amazing Race, GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra)
HBO's newest big series is The Last of Us, a zombie apocalypse creation based on the popular video game. All the pieces are in place, including the star power of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, great visuals and a properly horrifying atmosphere. After the premiere of the series, hear our thoughts on the look and feel of the show and where it could go from here. A jam-packed WAYWA includes Ben's journey into anime movies, a bone crunching Viking film and a particularly strong showing from Amazon Prime. Oh, and Cobra Kai Season 6 will be the final season of the show. Is this good news or bad news? Be sure to follow the podcast on Instagram @waywa_podcast for all the latest show news, episode drops and more! 1:20–News 8:00–The Last of Us 19:45–WAYWA (The Northman, Spirited Away, That 90s Show, The Hatchet Wielding Hitchiker, Emily the Criminal, Vengeance)
One week after Ben somehow didn't know who Ethan Hawke is, he gets a crash course with Training Day. We're here to talk about this 2001 police classic where he has to match wits (and screen presence) with Denzel Washington. This movie rocks, but does it get a little bit too convoluted for a first-time viewer? Also, is Amazon Prime cancelling season 3 of The Wilds??? Hear our reaction to this devastating news. Be sure to follow the podcast on Instagram @waywa_podcast for all the latest show news, episode drops and more! :15–Headlines 8:15–Training Day 27:00–WAYWA (The After Party, Band of Brothers, All American)
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the latest chart-topping Netflix product, and with it comes a fun twist on Rian Johnson's first wildly successful installment of the series. Phil and Ben talk about the tweaks that worked and the performances that stood out. Also, what's more embarrassing: That Ben actually finished his rewatch of The 100 or that he seemingly doesn't know who Ethan Hawke is? 1:00–Headlines 7:40–Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery 27:00–WAYWA (The 100 [LAST TIME!], Divergent, Love & Basketball, 21 Bridges, This Place Rules)
On this episode, we take a deep dive into one show and one movie! Netflix's Last Chance U is in its 7th season, and the second of which focuses on a junior college basketball program. The show has fantastic documentary storytelling of young players' lives, and this season is no different. How does it compare to the previous season, and which players are Phil and Ben's favorites? Then, it's a better-late-than-never review of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The movie had the impossible task of paying tribute to Chadwick Boseman while telling a cohesive story in the MCU. And it does a pretty darn good job of both of those. For WAYWA, we get into a quick wrap-up of Wednesday and discuss Apple TV's Spirited, its new original Christmas movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell that's smashing viewership records on the platform. Be sure to follow the podcast on Instagram @waywa_podcast for all the latest show news, episode drops and more! 2:00–Headlines 6:45–Last Chance U: Basketball (season 2) 23:00–Black Panther: Wakanda Forever 35:50–WAYWA ( Spirited, Wednesday wrap-up)
We're talking about a couple of popular recent Netflix releases this week! First, The Swimmers is a gripping true story film about two Syrian sister swimmers that acts as part sports movie, part immigration story. So much of the movie works well, but are the out-of-place elements scattered throughout enough to hold it back? Then, Tim Burton's Wednesday has topped the Netflix charts as an Addams Family reboot focusing on the family's troubled little sister as she struggles to fit in. Jenna Ortega more than owns the role, and there's a lot to like. But there are some really odd creative choices to talk about too. Be sure to follow the podcast on Instagram @waywa_podcast for all the latest show news, episode drops and more! 1:55–Housekeeping & News 8:30–The Swimmers 18:20–Wednesday 27:45–WAYWA (The Fugitive, The Peripheral, Journey to the West, Emily the Criminal, Bullet Train)
Amazon Prime's The Peripheral is one of the most popular things streaming. But should you actually give this futuristic thriller a look? Ben and Phil share their perspectives having watched the show to different points. What works and what doesn't? Are the super long, intense episodes a problem? And what stupid connection to The 100 did Ben find? Be sure to follow the podcast on Instagram @waywa_podcast for all the latest show news, episode drops and more! 3:15–Housekeeping 7:45–The Peripheral 21:30–WAYWA (The White Lotus, Fahrenheit 451, Andor)
Netflix made a new sitcom about the last Blockbuster on earth. Is that kind of a low blow? And does the show work? Plus, you won't want to miss this week's discussion about the Sam Worthington classic, Man on a Ledge. We also leave plenty of space for an argument about which Star Wars movies are good and what the next generation of fans will remember as their favorite films. Phil and Ben discuss about Tales if the Jedi, an awesome new anthology series that tells amazing stories in just 15 minutes and teaches us things we never knew we needed to know about the Star Wars universe. Then it's on to Black Adam and what our thoughts are on resetting the DC universe, or if it even matters at this point. Plus, hear some thoughts on Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza, the decade-old Cowboys & Aliens and whether Ben agrees that Rosaline is actually enjoyable. It's been an eventful couple of weeks. Ben recounts how the Rings of Power finale got spoiled for him, plus a hard binge of The 100. Phil goes through The Watcher, Rosaline and season 4 of The Sinner, plus gives a glance at Tales of the Jedi. This week we are bringing some movies to the pod that aren't very good. Ben watched a familiar yet flawed favorite double feature, Clash of the Titans and Wrath of the Titans, and Phil was disappointed by Blonde, an oddity project from Ana de Arnas and Andrew Dominik. There's also some good things, as the guys discuss the new Redeem Team documentary on the 2008 Olympic basketball team and share some thoughts on horror movies. Since we finally got around to seeing Thor: Love and Thunder, we are finally going to talk about it. Where does it stack up coming off of Ragnarock? And what works and doesn't work in the film? Plus, Phil's hardcore recommendation of Abbott Elementary pushed Ben into watching. What are his initial thoughts? There's so much good stuff to watch, we're struggling to keep up. So Phil and Ben take some time to catch up on some of the biggest things streaming right now, including what we've seen of House of the Dragon and the first four episodes of Andor, which (sadly for Ben) is actually pretty good so far! Phil also drops some thoughts on Dahmer, plus the new season of Abbott Elementary. Cobra Kai Season 5 is here, and there is so much to talk about! We got what felt like a much different 10-episode run of the show this time around, one that was darker and more serious, but still had so many memorable moments. The guys discuss what they did and didn't like, where this season stacks up with the rest of the show, and whether they think this journey should keep going or if Netflix should quit while it's ahead. It's finally here! The long anticipated Rings of Power spin-off of Lord of the Rings is now streaming on Amazon Prime, and we're pumped to talk about it. This week, the guys discuss Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist, a rising Netflix documentary that gives stunning insight into football player Manti Te'o's fake girlfriend scandal from a decade ago. They also talk about some popular series that are just kicking off, including House of the Dragon and She-Hulk. Plus, hear a dumb Mary Poppins story from Ben. Then, we do a live reaction to the new Rings of Power trailer, where we actually finally get to see things that will be in the show. We're dipping into weird territory on this week's episode. After Ben gives a reaction to Not Okay, one of Phil's choices from last week, the guys discuss Snowflake Mountain, a mildly uncomfortable Netflix reality show that tricks its contestants into not knowing what show they're on, plus the latest trailer drop from Cobra Kai Season 5 and the current season of Hard Knocks. Then, Phil shares a (dare we say) life-changing encounter with the Los Angelis Dodgers in Kansas City from last week. Phil and Ben talk about what they've been watching lately, which includes a Sylvester Stallone movie you've heard of and one you haven't. Plus, Phil took Ben's recommendation and watched Wind River. Get ready for big things on this week's episode of WAYWA! We're finally breaking down season 2 of Amazon Prime's The Wilds and all of the drama that came with adding a group of teenage boys to the castaway crew. Then, Mike Chapin returns to the show to discuss The Rehearsal, the new HBO Max show that's the brainchild of Nathan for You's Nathan Fielder. Except someone decided to give him a way bigger budget, and the results are even more mind blowing and awkward than before. The boys are back. With a brand-new show. Phil and Ben kick off the inaugural episode of the WAYWA podcast, and boy do they have a lot to talk about. They're joined by old friend of the show, Josh (SalvationsElite) to run through the most exciting things they've been watching lately, including the new season of Stranger Things, Kenobi, The Bear, and most importantly, a network TV show that's been off the air for years that no one watches anymore (except for Ben). Where does Stranger Things 4 rank in the series? Was Kenobi a success, or did it do more harm than good in the overall Star Wars canon? Is The Bear the best show of the year? You may not get the answers to all of these questions, but you will hear more undying love for Steve Harrington than you could ever ask for. We are back to our movie swapping ways. This week, it's 2 films that don't seem to have much in common, but have a lot of similarities the deeper you go! There's Sugar, a creative and sad character piece about a young baseball player making his way from the Dominican Republic to America. Then there's Rounders, a fun Matt Damon project about how to beat John Malkovich at poker. And someone is sporting an odd Russian accent... Finally, we give a live reaction to the trailer for the final chapter of Stranger Things. :10—Intro 14:25—Sugar 28:20—Rounders 39:25—Stranger Things 4 trailer LIVE REACTION Be sure to follow the podcast on Twitter @WEDIDNOTWATCHIT for episode drops, show news, and the most unique entertainment takes you've never heard!
Phil and Ben re-live the classic journey of the High School Musical trilogy and discuss how each movie ended up being vastly different from each other. What's most memorable about these films, and do we buy that Ryan was actually a star pitcher? The guys also hit in some other topics, including the latest Marvel show Moon Knight and preview the coming-soon season of The Wilds. Spoiler alert: This appears to be a podcast episode, but it is actually a piece of cake. The guys talk about a recent viewing of Netflix's mindless new reality show Is it Cake? starting Mikey Day. Contestants bake cakes to look like real-life objects. So is it worth watching? We also hit on some other topics, including previewing the upcoming season of Selling Sunset and the film Deep Water starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. The Batman is a big deal. So big that we needed to bring on guest star Caleb Johnson to help break down the movie. What worked so well about this incarnation Batman? Is Robert Pattinson just that good? Or does it have more to do with the overall philosophy and detail behind the film? And the biggest question, can the guys actually convince Ben to go see it? Some Marvel and Star Wars talk finds its way into the conversation, too. We decide once and for all how good of a movie Attack of the Clones is. Some people liked it, but it seems like everybody hated it. What's up with The Book of Boba Fett? Now that the series is done, Phil and Ben discuss the finale and look back on what worked and what didn't. Were people just expecting the wrong type of show? Phil and Ben Floodlight Palm Springs, a Groundhog Day-esque time loop romantic comedy about Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti being stuck at the worst wedding ever. How does it compare to other movies with the same concept? And did the guys have different interpretations of what happened in the film? Ben continues his shameful lagging behind in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in this week's WAYWA as he finally watched WandaVision. Yes, a year late. Today's big question: When does a show know what it is? Phil and Ben break down some of their recent/favorite shows to find out whether they really understand the tone, direction and ambition they are aiming for. What's the result when they do understand? More interestingly, what about when they don't? Phil's discusses How I Met Your Father for WAYWA and how it can be rewarding to stick with something that starts out so hopelessly not good. It's time to talk about possibly the best bad movie ever made. It's time to talk about The VelociPastor. The journey's end is here, and thankfully so is the end of the Karate Kid movies...Phil and Ben wrap up their trip through the franchise with a discussion of the final two installments. There's The Next Karate Kid, starring Hillary Swank. We thought things couldn't get any worst after Part III, but this is the worst movie ever made. Then there's the 2010 reboot of The Karate Kid starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. It's not the worst movie ever made. But first, we kick things off with The Book of Boba Fett and give our takes on the first episode. Do we like the direction it's heading? And do we want to learn about Boba's past adventures, or should we just stick to his new story? Finally, Phil WAYWA's Bo Burnham's Zach Stone is gonna be famous. What's the best way to spread Christmas cheer? Aside from singing loud for all to hear, it's gotta be tuning in for our FLOODLIGHT of the holiday classic, Elf! Elf is among Will Ferrell's earliest work, and it's also some of his best. This movie is packed full of nostalgia and Christmas spirit, but the memorable scenes and jokes land even harder on a re-watch. Ben tackles WAYWA this week with Get Smart, the 1960s spy spoof that shared very little DNA with the 2008 Steve Carell/Anne Hathaway remake. But both are classics in their own way. This WAYWA Catch-Up sees Phil go over everything from Marvel's new Hawkeye show to Lin-Manuel Miranda's directorial debut tick, tick...BOOM! And there's a roast I'd the Jonas Brothers in there somewhere. There's so much to unpack in a season full of character development, memorable moments and dark twists. We hash through it all, highlighting the biggest turning points of the series and predicting what comes next when season 4 drops. Another week, another record-breaking piece of Netflix content! On this episode, the guys react to Red Notice, a Netflix original that's the most-streamed movie on an opening weekend in the platform's history. So why is this action/comedy/heist starring The Rock, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot blowing up? There are plenty of flaws to go around, but everyone is tuning in. Phil and Ben have a review of the film and the answers to all your questions. On WAYWA, Phil discusses Love Life, an HBO original (shocker!) about, well, the love life of some characters. For this week's movie swap, the guys picked films that are about their respective careers. And their choices couldn't be more different than each other... Ben's choice is Spotlight, a hard-hitting Best Picture winner that takes a deep dive into the world of investigative journalism. Phil picks Tommy Boy, a buddy salesman comedy that features Chris Farley & David Spade, a resurrected deer and an appearance by evil Rob Lowe. Then, Ben's WAYWA is the Netflix sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson. Which you shouldn't try unless you're ready to have your brain broken by absurdity.
