Clive hosts Loose Ends with an audience in London this week with a set of guests with a serious work ethic and willingness to try new things in the name of entertainment. The chart topping superstar and award winning actor Michael Ball is now also a best selling novelist. Can life backstage really be as chaotic as this page-turner set in theatreland suggests? Hollie McNish is that rare thing, a best-selling poet who also likes to make people laugh. Fresh from entertaining Swiss school children with her work, she'll be discussing her latest collection Lobster (and other things I'm learning to Love), the follow up to Slug (and other things I've been told to hate). And Dr Who and Ballet Shoes actress Pearl Mackie on her new venture - a true crime podcast called Theatre of Crime, investigating famous murder mysteries with a touch of audio drama. Comedian Pierre Novellie also co-hosts podcasts, alongside names like Frank Skinner and Phil Wang. But he's going it alone in a new show - Must We? - a sell out Edinburgh Festival hit that makes comedy out of Cargo Cults, neurodiversity and quirky obsessions. Plus, music from the English folk star Sam Lee, who is Artist-in-residence for a year of environment-themed events - Earth Unwrapped - at Kings Place in London. Presented by Clive Anderson Produced by Olive Clancy
The “cargo cult” phenomenon refers to movements that emerged primarily in Melanesia during and after World War II. Indigenous groups, witnessing the influx of material goods (“cargo”) brought by Western military forces, believed these supplies were delivered through spiritual or ritual means rather than industrial production and global logistics. After the war, some communities attempted … Continue reading Episode 445: Cargo Cults of Melanesia

The strangeness of these vases cannot be overstated. They're hewn out of some of the hardest stones known to man with micron precision. Mathematical relationships like pi, phi, and the flower of life are encoded in their construction. And they are OLD. Some have been found in tombs that date back to 6000 BC, more than three thousand years before the peak of Egyptian civilization. When they are discovered, it is always among other vases that *look* similar, but lack the precision and fine workmanship, or are made from softer stone. It is as if they are prized heirlooms, passed along through the generations, from a people whose ability to work stone (at the very least) rivals ours - but who are completely missing from the archaeological record. Who were these people? Why did they make these vases? What else were they doing? We sit down with Ben to unravel the story. Howdy folks of the interwebs! Your host Double J is back with another edition of OpGCD Live! show. Today, Double J is joined by his occasional co-host & host of the Occult Rejects show - Nick....and join'n us tonight as a guest is Ryder Lee, the host of Raised Giants & documentary filmmaker. In today's shenanigan infused journey, your host Double J, along with co-host Nick & guest Ryder Lee discuss the topic of Ancient Alien Cargo Cults (AACCs). From the tales of a galaxy far far away, to the AACCs of modern politics/religion we all live in a society ruled by AACCs. Your host, Double J, along with Nick & Ryder Lee share their thoughts on the potential occult connections to these AACCs, and their connections to modern day "Satanism". Lastly, the AACCs invade our politics, religions, and even society....perhaps most notable, if you live in or around the state of NJ - where there has been a recent massive increase in "UFOs" circling the skies above the 50th best state in the Union...New Jersey. Anyhow, folks of the interwebs...thanks for join'n me to get a lil GCD! Enjoy the conversation on Ancient Alien Cargo Cults with Ryder Lee! There was another pop-up scam that rocked the fans of Bridgerton when they showed up for what they thought was a Victorian-era dance, but got flourescent lighting, an exotic dancer, and absolutely nothing Victorian. These are a treat. Sarah demoans a marble art installation that was smashed to bits by a "performance artist" for the hell of it and ancient sketches in the dessert were destroyed by off-roaders. People are the worst. But we learn about an art concept that involves counting rice that Sarah can't quit thinking about, and we decided it is a great metaphor for so many aspects of life. Sarah turns the tables and teaches Susie about a religious phenomenon involving remote islands that experienced WWII soldiers bringing rations and other resources, but mistook them for divine beings. We learn why these groups have built a religious framework around them that still persists today.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Get $10 off your first month's subscription and free shipping when you go to https://nutrafol.com and enter the promo code BRAINCANDYGo to https://www.greenchef.com/braincandy50 and use code braincandy50 for 50% off your first box plus 20% off your next two months! Read Christian's work here: https://catalyst-journal.com/2024/06/the-cargo-cult-of-woke The Cargo Cult of Woke Introduction: Eight years ago, the term "woke" was popularized in mainstream culture through Childish Gambino's hit song, where it signaled an awareness of social injustices, particularly those perpetuated by systemic racism. “Stay woke” meant staying alert to the potential dangers posed by institutional powers. However, in recent years, "woke" has undergone a significant transformation, morphing from a call to consciousness into a shorthand for a new kind of political correctness—one that gives off a radical sheen, but is without true class politics. In his latest article for *Catalyst Magazine*, "The Cargo Cult of Woke," Christian Parenti examines how this shift in meaning reflects broader cultural and political changes. Parenti argues that what we now call "woke" culture is less about genuine social change and more akin to a "cargo cult"—a symbolic performance of radicalism that ultimately serves to reinforce the status quo rather than challenge it. As Parenti writes, “Woke politics is not the politics of emancipation; it is the politics of submission, disguised as resistance.” Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. Stuart and Burning Man's Community Services head honcho Terry “Retro” Schoop riff on the streets of our fair city and the naming thereof, from the controversial to the miraculous to the misunderstood. Black Rock City has elaborate art themes, each with street names, each with curious conditions. Why does our recreational refugee camp even need street names? Were they always alphabetical around an imaginary clock face? And what's a clock anyway? Hear this year's art theme (ANIMALIA) express itself through cryptids (animals that no one can prove are real). Folklore and fandom brought us our new ABC street names: Afanc, Bigfoot, Chupacabra, Dingbat… and NOT the Easter Bunny, thanks to Encantados, which are were-dolphins that shape-shift into dapper dancers in search of a party. This is an episode with literature, lore, and laughter — and a pile of BRC trivia for street cred.Streets of BRC 2023: Cavalcade of Cryptids | Burning Man JournalBurning Man 2023: ANIMALIATerry “Retro” Schoop | Burning Man JournalBurning Man Staff: Terry Schoop

Homesteaders have their share of trials: Garden/Crop failure, predator attacks, sick animals, not enough rain, too much rain, hail that beats your crop to the ground, stuff that worked last year doesn't work this year.Homestead Padre makes a significant amount of his income from selling his produce and baking and selling bread at the farmer's market. His big baking stove broke down. Some (real) homesteaders often live lives of modest means, and these things can be devastating. We talk about dealing with trials and depression.Faith gets us through these times.Sometimes you just have to embrace the suck.Pride is sometimes the reason for depression - "why is this happening to me? This shouldn't happen to me!".Disclaimer - This is not medical advice. It's just two guys talking about our trials. If you are having troubles, talk to someone, and get help. We had the pleasure of interviewing Robot Monster over Zoom video!Rock duo Robot Monster has released their newest single “OUT”, streaming now here. The song comes on the heels of their debut full-length album which was released earlier this year. Both were produced by Grammy award-winning Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, Kaleo, Tom Waits, City and Colour) at King's studio, The LBT, just outside of Nashville, Tennessee. The band's previous single, “Get Somewhere” saw Robot Monster featured on Pittsburgh contemporary station T102; fans flooded the station with calls with over 7k calls following the band's on-air interviews. The song has also been featured on Spotify's Rock Hard and Apple Music's All New Rock & Breaking Rock playlists. Last May Robot Monster played their first show ever, serving as direct support for Stone Temple Pilots at the Palladium in New York City. The band is on tour now with The Bronx and Drug Church, with upcoming stops in Charlotte, Atlanta, and Memphis. For a full list of dates, please see below or visit: www.robotmonstermusic.com.About Robot Monster: In 2020, guitarist Will Brennan and drummer Logan Sidle weaponized Instagram and TikTok with scrappy appearances in backyards and junkyards, quickly earning supportive comments and direct messages from the diverse likes of Skrillex, Fred Durst, and Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers. Since then the band has experienced a meteoric rise – gaining a combined social following of 500k and regularly garnering over 2M views per week on TikTok.The magnetism of their musicianship and creativity quickly drew producer Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, Buddy Guy, Tom Waits). King guided the New Haven, Connecticut duo as they collectively sharpened an identity and vision for what became Robot Monster. The band took shape without sacrificing, limiting, or overly complicating the initial spark, which quickly attracted so many.On their self-titled debut album they summon the enduring strength of stripped-down, bluesy rock n' roll with the feel of indie rock and punkish power. Songs like the riff-oriented and hooky groove monster “Caged,” the moody “Cargo Cult,” the expansively melodious “King of Everything,” and the atmospheric “When We Sang” confirm ROBOT MONSTER is a genuine force of nature. Both guys are in their twenties yet fully cognizant of the timeless appeal of what they've begun. The kids ask the questions this time. These longtime Burners have participated in BRC most of their young lives. 6-year-old Teapot offers sage advice on the radio. Teen brothers Atticus and Colby interview deep-rooted DPW adults: Coyote is the city superintendent of BRC, and author of the book, Built to Burn: Tales of the Desert Carnies of Burning Man. Melissa Waters is an office administrator and a wellness educator for Burning Man Project.Atticus and Colby are their sons. Who better to ask about families at BRC. We also hear from Abby Ehmann, aka StAbby, a longtime DPW Manager and Tamsin Hull, a DPW Volunteer and creative ceramics artist. They talk about interactive art, smart art, playa names, and serendipity. It's cool. The episode ends strong with little kids on the radio at BRC. They share stories of Kidsville, a lemonade stand, and choosing to be an angel, not a dragon. Hear the curiosity and the cuteness, and the occasional awkward transition… like childhood… BRC is for everyone.
